We will analyze and predict each match, and of course, you will read the write-ups and laugh at us when we’re wrong. So without further ado, here’s the Introduction! Fortunately for our loyal readers, I'm once again boarding this Crew by force. Enjoy! The "Rivalry Rumble" Well now! Hate the format (would have preferred to see randomized tag teams, a phrase I never thought I'd type), really hated SB's approach to the season (kicking out Mario/Sonic and other B8 rallies because our choices "aren't their real rivals"), and frankly I'm not all that crazy about this bracket either. First 6 divisions are decent, but the last two are essentially a "wasted potential" graveyard... and don't get me started on denying us Cloud vs Mario in favor of setting up the dullest Championship imaginable. But enough negativity! At least we get a Contest in 2011, at least it'll only last 45ish days, and at least there's one potential twist this season, namely SmartVoterFAQs, aka Rivalries Matter. I think we're going to see results that differ quite noticeably from what you'd except in a standard tag team or series versus series scenario. I'm expecting these results to hinge more heavily on iconic status, nostalgia, and the in-game rivalries themselves than your generic x-stat values would dictate. Now, whether those factors are going to be enough to turn sure losses into straight up wins for our underdogs remains to be see, but at the very least it should keep us on our toes in the Oracle! And as for the matches themselves, well, Mario vs Earthworm Jim Hey look it's Mario and Bowser, kicking off the dullest path to a Championship Match since 2006 Zelda! They'll obviously start their long run with a huge blowout, but where this final number ends up could be rather telling. 90% blowouts appear to be a thing of the past; heavy favorites have been consistently anti-voted in the past couple of years. But was that just because voters have been so sure of easy Character Battle wins for Link and Cloud, and will switching to a new format shake their confidence somewhat? Got to imagine Mario's such a guaranteed winner that he's held back at least a little... that combined with the perhaps underrated joke appeal of a heroic worm and something with a slug for a butt ought to keep him and Bowser at least somewhat grounded, I'd say. Last contest I had my own topic for analysis, but if no one minds I'll just post them here this time around. (1) Mario/Bowser vs. (8) Earthworm Jim/Queen Slug-for-a-Butt Mario/Bowser, unfortunately, have no interesting matches lined up (barring some theoretical craziness in the final), so there's no immediate reason to care how they do here. Yet, this match will set the standard for contest blowouts. A lot of oracles have them reaching for the mid to high 80s, but I find that unlikely, for a few reasons. The vote-ins will have, as usual, helped to rid the bracket of the worst of the fodder - let's remember here that this pair did get 8% in a 12-way, which requires a certain degree of pull. Lower votals, joke pull, the match being in the night, and increasing apathy to contests should all help the EJ crew avoid complete humiliation. Mario vs. Bowser with 81.56% of the vote. --- Praise the Black Turtle, Game of the Decade Guru Champ. (Well, I never promised creativity, did I?!) |

North Division: Round 1 - Match 1 – (1) Mario/Bowser vs. (8) Jim/Queen Slug-for-a-Butt Moltar’s Analysis Mario/Bowser Sometimes rivals, sometimes allies, this legendary pair is destined to go far in this contest. Jim/Queen Well somebody has to do be the first match fodder. Another year, another contest. The general feeling for it ranges from ‘meh’ to complete apathy. The bracket doesn’t seem too tough, but maybe things will liven up later and the matches will turn out better than expected. This is your standard match 1 beatdown. Mario/Bowser is one of the strongest teams in this bracket and Jim/Butt is...well it’s butt. What’s more interesting here is the margin by which Mario/Bowser will win. Last contest, we didn’t get too many big blowouts, but this just seems like a massacre waiting to happen. I mean really who doesn’t like the Mario/Bowser rivalry? 80% at least seems like a sure bet here. Moltar’s Bracket: Mario/Bowser Moltar’s Prediction: Mario/Bowser - 84% Lopen’s Analysis I was totally going to quit this this year, I swear, but two things got me back into this: 1. New format. It's dumb, but it should at least be new and exciting to predict! 2. 24 hour matches after round 1. Writing two of these a day is obnoxious, but one should be manageable... once I get through this first round. Anyway, with that out of the way, there's a match here. I have it abbreviated as Mario/Bowser vs Jim/Butt, which says all you need to kw about this match. On that note, next round has Conker/Poo in it. I couldn't think of a better pair of matches to start this contest... er... actually, I could, but a four year old couldn't. That's almost the same thing, right? (you're supposed to say “no” here) I expect something similar to what Jim got on Mega Man in 2004 here, a bit worse cause Bowser kicks butt's butt as back up. I hope. You never know, maybe it'll be a hip joke vote to go with the latin blocks, 3 dimensional shapes, and glitches. Oh and don't forget RIVALRY FACTOR gonna be workin for Mario and Bowser here. Let the slug for an ass beatings commence. Lopen's prediction Mario vs Bowser with 86.47% Leon’s Analysis I’m having a hard time getting up for this contest, so don’t expect super long writeups this year unless it becomes unexpectedly good! Here’s hoping! I’ve already given my thoughts on the contest as a whole when I appeared on the debut episode of The Show this season (</shameless self-promotion), so I won’t repeat any of that here. This should be Mario/Sonic leading off the contest, but instead we’re getting Mario/Bowser, which should be plenty strong on its own, especially against this pair. Earthworm Jim has only one contest appearance all time, and that was back in 2004, when it scored 17% on Mega Man. Chances are good that Jim’s even weaker now than he was then, and Mario’s stronger. The vote-in performance wasn’t too encouraging either, considering Jim lost to Laharl/Midboss and The Kid/The Guy. Yikes. Plus, I have a feeling we may see some massive blowouts in this contest from the top duos. I know we’ve had a lot of Anti-BlowoutFAQs from the last two contests, but I’m sensing this contest will be more akin to the Series Contest, where the most “respected” rivalries will overperform against the not-so-popular competition. We saw Mario Bros. do it in the Series Contest, so it’s not entirely inconceivable that one of the most respected video game icons and his infamous villain could benefit from the format, if there is any benefit to be gained from it. don’t know if I’ll do any running gag this time around like I did with
my “Embarrassing Confessions” from the GOTD Analysis Crew. I thought
about doing a “Favorite Rivalry Moment” from the rivalry that I expected
to lose, but then I realized I’d have nothing to say about a large
number of these rivalries! Oh well. I’m open to suggestions! Leonhart’s Prediction: Mario/Bowser with 90.09% Kleenex’s Analysis Not even going to dignify this match with a write up. Kleenex's Pred- oh, I guess it's probably too early for one of those. It's kinda hard to believe its been almost two years since the last Character Battle. I can't tell if it feels like it just happened or it was ages ago. Anyway, a lot of people have been down on this contest because they don't like the format (spoilers: it's because you just don't care about contests anymore), but I think it has the potential to be somewhat interesting if the paired characters weaken or strengthen their counterparts. Or everyone just defaults to voting for Link because they're all DRONES. If it's the later, things are going to be pretty straightforwards; if it's the former we might have a lot of funky results and it could be kinda fun. Shouldn't take too long to figure out which way things will tilt either. And hey, Gilgamesh finally made a contest with a winnable first round match. How can this not be "best contest ever" material? I'm also looking forward to the return of 24-hour 1v1 (sorta) matches. Haven't seen those in 5 years. That's as many as five ones. And that's terrible. So yeah, we'll see how it goes. I'm currently "cautiously optimistic", but there's plenty of time time for things to become terrible. Also, Mario/Bowser win. A lot. Kleenex's Prediction: Mario vs. Bowser with 82.67% Applekidjosh’s Analysis So this is the part where I take a second to rant about the contest, right? Oh, the board's pretty much beaten the "a good chunk of these aren't even rivalries" and "semantics aside this is basically a tag-team contest" points into the ground? Well fine! Instead I'll talk about how I just found an awesome korean bakery and bought a melonpan, anpan, and a kimchi-beef croquette :3 Anyway Moltar must be really hard up for his crew if he bothered to have me ba-I mean HERE I AM READY TO DOMINATE THIS WILL BE YEAR TWO OF MY REIGN OF TERROR!! I honestly don't even remember how I did in last year's contest (I also don't remember the contest itself - was it so bad it's forgettable?) but I'm sure I won or got 2nd place or something. That seems like something I'd do. Well this probably comes as no surprise to anybody but I don't know who approximately 20% of the people in this contest are. It's almost sad how "out of touch" I am with gaming. I've played approximately a half dozen current-gen games, and those games aren't helping here (ctrl-f Mao, Valvatorez, Jack from Bioshock, sackboy...). But anyway, rather than put a ton of research into this I figured it would be way more fun for everyone involved if I just trudged ahead blindly with no care toward the future like I'm the United States spreading democracy abroad! So without further ado... I think Mario and Bowser will beat... is this "Jim vs Queen Slug-for-a-butt" huh? I'm gonna say this is Jim Raynor and some bad nickname for Kerrigan that I don't get cause I haven't played Starcraft 2 yet! Well Starcraft characters are always garbage, even though I don't want them to be, and Mariowser are top tier, so this is a no brainer. Not even Day9 could rally enough people to win here. Dante’s Analysis The first match we have here is… not very interesting. I mean, “Queen Slug-for-a-Butt” is clearly going to get votes solely for having the word Butt in her name, so I suppose it’ll give a decent view on how big a part jokes will play in this contest. Aside from that, theres nothing interesting to say so I’ll go ahead and give my preliminary thoughts on how the rivalry system will come into play – It won’t. The team with the strongest person in it will almost always win, except in cases that are extremely close, in which case the synergy might actually come into play. I actually hope I’m wrong on this, as it’d make the contest much for interesting. Time will tell if I’m wrong! Winner - Mario/Bowser, 86.27% Guest’s Analysis - PaulG235 After a long period between brackets opening and closing, we finally reach the first match of the new contest. Pretty much every single first match in these contests is a no brainer (even the four-way matches), this match being no different. We all know that the worm and slug duo are going to be stepped on by Mario/Bowser. The only question is how much of a dominance the two will put up here. With one of the two being a noble niner and the other being a high midcarder whereas Jim/Slug are basically bad fodder, it's easy to expect somewhere in the 80's percentage.
