"Competitive Smash players hate Bayonetta" is one thing.

"Smash players in general tend to forget Shulk exist" is another.

the point is that you should take what B8 says about the Smash community with a grain of salt

Shulk is forgotten about in competitive play because he isn't good, but as far as actually liking the character he's probably Top 5 liked in the series. Ike and Captain Falcon aren't used in modern competitive play and they do just fine.

I will say I think these guys are both really overrated and that Auron is going to completely crush whoever wins. Like Lucina vs Magus is probably going to be thought of as a debatable match when all is said and done.

I remember the good old days when I came to this board 2003 and while he wasn't the most realistic winner back then, he still had the loudest hype for someone to beat Link. In fact I wouldn't be here if the Magus love wasn't so huge until Knux beat him when he was supposed to win the divsion, unless Kerrigan OR Vincent could do something.

We all know how that went. Vincent took the division and looked like he could be one of the best 10 characters or so. Then just something went wrong in the last character battle. Some blame the picture but Vincent choked big time. Still I picked him winning this match without a second thought. I always feel like it's stupid to pick my favorite characters, and Magus lost to a bag of sand.

But here's the thing. The gamefaqs users votes are now doubled, and I can't think of any other franchise that should benefit from this more than Chrono Trigger. We are also gettting older and older, and most of us realize that Vincent Valentine is awful in FFVII. Sure he looks badass, but he has without a doubt the worst limit breaks. He can even heal the first boss you fight after you get him. With so many awesome Final Fantasy characters, how did THIS GUY get a spin off?

If you look at the stats then Vincent should win, but you know what Magus taught us? Lol X-stats. And it's time that he actually wins a debatable match again. Long live MAGUS!

well Cait Sith has the worst Limit Breaks but Vincent's are pretty bad simply because you lose control of him afterward

well you can take advantage of a weird trick to abuse Slots but that would require you to keep Cait Sith in your party

I wouldn't say "big" trouble. Square RPG > not Square RPG, but 2000s > 2010s.

Aqua and Quiet are both 2010s characters.

I think Lucina is being underrated here, FEH has been hugely popular across the board, even on Gamefaqs. I'm not saying she'll beat Auron but there's no chance she gets doubled.

I know who Ren Amamiya is. He’s the lead in the Persona 5 anime. How did he make a video game character battle? Beats me. Claire wins this match by being an actual video game character

wait Ren actually kind of looks like someone I’ve seen before. The Persona 5 game protagonist, Joker! Leader of Da Squad (or Phantom Thieves as some call it)! That guy could have some strength on GameFAQs. Persona 5 was the runner-up GotY, and the series as a whole has been trending upwards in recent years.

Two things though, the first is that the Persona games are way way stronger than the cast. Yu got rocked by Vivi earlier, and Joker is going to be weaker than Yu since P4 > P5. I think that looks worse than it should since FF and Persona probably share a high overlap, and Persona ain’t on top in the hierarchy.

The second is that RE has looked alright so far (even though most of its characters have lost). The closest comparison to Claire is Chris Redfield, and he just lost to Phoenix pretty easily. I think Joker can hang around Phoenix’s level.

The division of death finally comes to a merciful end. This match is sneaky fun. Claire's old, a bit dated and not that great. She would fail the Pac-Man test -- the old Pac-Man test, because I don't want to guess what the hell is happening today -- and her most notable match is a somewhat controversial match against a bad KH character. But she's known, she's getting a remake of her main game in a few months, and she's got her own damn name,

Joker has a higher ceiling for sure. Persona 5's legit, and I wouldn't treat that game like I treat Witcher 3 or Assassin's Creed or Mass Effect or whatever. Persona 5's release was a big damn deal. That game is a JRPG-ass JRPG. It probably was a bigger deal with P5 came out than when FFXV did. I expect him to do well.

But he can't get his own damn name, and he doesn't have his mask in that picture. Who the hell is Ren Whatever? I've heard some talk about him having Joker on his picture but I haven't followed that. All I know is that I trust Joker more than I should and I think he can beat a has-been like Claire. Hold this match after RE2Make comes out and I might feel differently, but I think Joker's notable enough to win the majority of the site's votes, even without his damn name.

This is the first round match I’m having the most buyer’s remorse about. I felt like this was a match Joker could take if the circumstances were ideal, and they’re just not. He’s got an unappealing pic, and he’s probably not even going to be listed as “Joker” on the poll. He’ll have the name that’s only appeared in the anime to western audiences thus far. The one thing that gives him a chance is the fact that Claire has never been strong and still hasn’t won a match to date. This has been a good year for weak characters from 2002 to win matches though! At this point, I kinda wish I had Claire in my bracket, but I’ll go down with the ship once again.

Amamiya, here we go again. I’m pretty sure most Persona fans just refer to this dude as Joker, not by his anime name. With Yu, there was enough time for the name to disseminate before he got into a contest, and he didn’t have any other pseudonym people referred to him as. There’s a real chance that the name hurts Joker in this match, and he probably was not going to be very strong in the first place. I don’t have a lot of faith in RE characters that aren’t Leon or Jill, so that works in Joker’s favor, but the odds seem a little stacked against him here. I’m taking the fanboy pick because why not, but I think Claire should probably be favored here.

Kleenex’s Prediction: Joker with 50%

Guest’s Analysis - MZero

SBAllen finally listened to our pleas and changed Ren’s name to “Joker” on the bracket from round 2 on, which means it’s likely that name will show up on the poll. That’s very good for Ren’s chances because Joker actually appears in the game and sounds a lot cooler to the casual fan than “Ren Amamiya”. Now if only Allen would give him a picture in his Phantom Thieves outfit I would feel a lot better about this match.

Based on lol x-stats, Yu Narukami would have put up 48% on Claire in 2013, which is probably Ren’s best comp at the moment. Now, Ren has a few things working in his favor. I feel like P5 is a little more well known than P4 was, and the series as a whole has been gaining traction lately. Persona 5 also had legit GotY consideration as well, so it’s fairly popular. Finally, in a 2-15 match-up he should benefit from the
bracket vote a bit (although we see how well that went for Waluigi!) And hey, people have to vote in all 4-matches. Maybe they’ll see “Joker” and think of Batman’s Joker and vote for him just because they like The Joker. Who knows! (this probably isn’t a real thing)

In a debatable match I’m going with my boy. Ren Amamiya wins with 55%

Well, SBAllen changed it so that his name shows up as "Joker" if you picked him to advance, and the name that's been showing up when you pick characters to advance in your bracket has what's been showing up under the pics on the front page.

Huh. Across the board upset (isn't it?) on this one eh? Well I'll put my official prediction on Claire with 59% then since it's apparently been confirmed (?). Duel 3 let's rock crew.

Pic is still Ren Amamiya though. This is hard to call.

I mean I almost want Persona dude to do well since it confirms that something vaguely new can have some decent strength but I'm really not seeing it with Geralt struggling so much against Rosalina. Guess we'll see though. It's not really something that can be discussed with poll numbers you just gotta go with your gut.

Well, I think Persona is a totally different animal from Witcher, but we'll find out soon. I mean, Joker can be of similar strength to Geralt and still win here anyway.

Even if Ren's listed as Joker, he still has a really generic picture, so it's hard to have much confidence in him.
