Terra vs. Scorpion who wins

ironic comparison considering Scorpion beat Pac-Man in 2002 precisely because nobody cares about Pac-Man

Moltar’s Analysis

So Kiryu got a very high seed due to Board 8 support, but don’t be fooled and think he’s going to be really strong here. Yakuza has never been worth anything on GameFAQs, while Bomberman is at least something site visitors know, even if they don’t care too much about it. If we’re talking about which character is going to get the apathy vote, it’s gotta be Bomberman.

...Damnit. I could've sworn that Kiryu wasn't a Board 8 creation and that his seed was legit. That's literally the only reason I backed off of the obvious "Bomberman is more recognizable to casuals" logic.

Mac Arrowny posted...
Have we ever seen any indication that Yuna is stronger than Tidus? That feels like it'd be pretty strange to me, unless FFX-2 is way more popular here than I thought (it's not). Have we seen them in any polls together or fairly direct comparisons, other than these two?

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/1445-who-is-your-favorite-all-time-final-fantasy-hero
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/841-who-is-your-favorite-final-fantasy-x-character

Not really, but "polls together" is probably the worst possible way to determine the relative strength of two characters that share a fanbase (although those results seem accurate.) We've seen plenty of examples of characters' comparative strength against other opponents not being predictive of an actual head-to-head result between them, most famously Mario and Samus. (Which is never a thing that stopped happening. Samus will still invariably outperform Mario against any character not directly from the Mario franchise, but she still has yet to beat him head-to-head and probably never will.) And I feel like Square leads in general are anti-vote magnets, probably something about their overall aesthetic. (You know, the spiky-haired pretty-boy thing.)

I'll give you another example. Who do you think is the #3 FFVII character, behind Cloud and Sephiroth? Even after he embarrassed himself in CBIX, most people's instinctive response would be Vincent, because his contest debut involved him absolutely crushing what was supposed to be a debated match and he's beaten some high-end characters and even, albeit in fourways, "broke" the Noble Nine even before L-Block could.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/2920-tournament-quarterfinal-sephiroth-mario-link-vincent
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/3274-division-8-round-1-nana-ratchet-sephiroth-tifa
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/3291-division-8-round-2-sephiroth-tifa-kratos-jill
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/3822-jenova-division-round-2-sephiroth-vs-vincent
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/3849-jenova-division-final-sephiroth-vs-tifa-lockheart

...Right, then. Well, he's certainly not the best at withstanding SFF from Sephiroth, at any rate. Surprisingly few other common opponents to filter results through. Vincent's two 4way results against Samus look better than Tifa's 2013 3way result, but worse than Tifa's 2006 1v1 result; Vincent's 2006 1v1 against Sonic is better than Tifa's in 2005; Vincent got a better percentage on Gordon in a pair of 2008 4way matches than Tifa did in a 1v1 in 2010...and Tifa's 2006 1v1 against The Boss was far better than Vincent's 2008 4way result. But it's tough to compare 1v1s to 4ways. Overall? I'd say it's tough to draw a conclusion on which one has truly been stronger. I'd lean towards Tifa anyway, because she is in fact the only non-Noble Niner to break 49.5% on a Noble Niner in a 24-hour 1v1 (though I'm not sure if 24 hours would've changed anything with Crono-Missingno), and a fairly strong one at that. But I would definitely take Tifa > Vincent in a 1v1.

but then again I don't think that highly of Charizard

he was ridiculously overrated in 2010 (never forget he barely got 55% on Kratos) and 2013 exposed him a bit

He's not as strong as Pikachu.

You're not wrong here. I can't agree with transience calling Charizard a "favorite", if only because Bowser is here. It was kind of a lucky break that Zard caught in 2010, a lot of perfect circumstances.

I've got my duty of unofficial analysis to keep

Lopen's unofficial analysisx4

2B v Cayde-6

Now don't get me wrong, 2B isn't going to be a powerhouse by any means, but I do think Nier (and 2B's Neptune if you know what I mean) has some decent word of mouth coverage so she should be able to pop big numbers on trash fodder. Which this Cayde-6 guy very much is. Most people won't know who he is, and even fewer will care.

2B with 74.12%

Shadow the Hedgehog v Ness

I kinda see this as Tidus v Donkey Kong part 2. Random underwhelming Smash character gets paired against a dude who is kinda hated by significant segments of his own fanbase and had a close match in 2004, and has an easy win. Ness is weaker than DK but Shadow is probably weaker than Tidus too. It'll all about even out in the end.

Ness with 57.49%

Terra Branford v Charizard

Fortunate draw for Terra. I would get no pleasure out of seeing her get a surprise win. This match is notable for being one of the two or three times I will passionately vote Pokemon in a match on this site. I think the Zard is a bit of a FRAUD but he should still be well out of range of even a generous estimate for Terra (who I think will be significantly weaker than Kefka)

Charizard with 65.10%

Bowser v Gordon Freeman

No I don't think Bowser is going to get a Bowsette (ugh) boost (though people may be calling for one after this beatdown). Yes I do think Gordon Freeman is going to be at his weakest point ever, as I don't see him as a character who ages well without releases as he's just not a character with a very appealing design or strong characterization that is going to breed a lot of attachment, and he already looked pretty damn weak last time we saw him.

Bowser with 74.82%

Much like yesterday with Kiryu I bet Terra had BRACKETS despite being a huge underdog with us cause of the higher seed

I kept it to myself this time cause I didn't want to jinx Charizard, though Pokemon failing to deliver the ONE TIME I actually want them to would be too fitting

I think 2005 is my favourite character battle at this point and nothing could replace it just due to the place we were at. 2003 was a big deal too, but 05 had that nintendo boost and the wars over advent children and vincent and the entire devil division. great contest.
