Division 4: Round 3 - Match 104 – (3) Super Mario 64vs. (2) The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Moltar’s Analysis

Super Mario 64
Round 1 - 80.04% vs Mario Kart 8
Round 2 - 66.23% vs Final Fantasy Tactics

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Round 1 - 72.34% vs Skies of Arcadia
Round 2 - 65.27% vs Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4

Year of 64, right!

We all know the Nintendo hierarchy goes Zelda > Mario, but 64 is either the strongest or second strongest Mario depending on who you ask. TP, like WW, is lower on the Zelda totem pole, but it’s still part of the Zelda Top 5 and that’s still strong enough to do damage here.

WW broke 46% on the second strongest Final Fantasy game, so the question to ask here is how much stronger is SM64. Also, even if it is significantly stronger, could the hierarchy also come into play and give Zelda the win anyway?

I’m going to bank on SM64 winning this in a close one. I have a feeling TP is a half-step behind WW, and Mario is about a half-step stronger than FF6. It's hard to go against the LAW though...

Moltar’s Bracket: Super Mario 64

Moltar’s Prediction: Super Mario 64 – 54%

Transience’s Analysis

Wind Waker put this match into perspective. Look, Mario 64's nice and all but this is a goddamn Zelda game we're talking about here, You do not blow those out unless you're another Zelda game.

There's some precedent here - Mario 1 and Mario 3 beating Zelda 1 - but that's the classics. Mario 64 does not have that aura that Mario 3 or World do. I consider it #3 on the Mario totem pole. Others think it's #1 and I get why - dat CT result - but I just don't feel like it has the same cache. I also don't think Mario's been all that good this year.

I mean, Mario 64's going to win here. Zelda hype will only get it so far. But I don't think it embarrasses TP. Zelda holds up and its drones -- err, fans -- come out to vote for it in waves. And if there's any significant overlap here with the tumblrers then watch out Mario.

Leonhart’s Analysis

I’ve found myself in the odd position of rooting for a Zelda game against a Mario game. Mario 64 is probably mid-tier for me in terms of Mario games and Twilight Princess is one of the few Zelda games I really like, but the fact that people seem to take it for granted that Mario 64 is going to pound TP is making me hope it wins. It’s kind of odd seeing Twilight Princess being the one Zelda game whose strength this site doesn’t seem to have any respect for. We saw a handful of people pushing Wind Waker > FFVI (and Wind Waker nearly put up 47%, to boot), but for some reason, no one seems to believe Twilight Princess has a chance here!

Don’t get me wrong. I still think Mario 64 probably wins, but this is still ZeldaFAQs and TP is still one of the main Zelda games that matter. After Wind Waker, I have a hard time believing Twilight Princess can really get blown out. Could be a different situation since it’s Nintendo/Nintendo, but Mario 3 couldn’t even blow out Zelda 1 with more than 57% back in 2004. I think TP will hold its own here. Of course, I’ve been horribly wrong about nearly everything in this contest for the last several matches, so Mario 64 probably doubles it or something. Whatever.

Leonhart’s Vote: Twilight Princess

Leonhart’s Prediction: Super Mario 64 with 51.50%

Kleenex’s Analysis

This is an interesting one. Mario 64 is assuredly the stronger game, but Zelda does not lose to Mario easily. I’m very curious to see how well Twilight Princess holds up today. The range is pretty wide, this could end up anywhere from a 55/45 match to a SFF doubling. Their respective round 2 results indicate something a bit more in the middle to me. I’m starting to suspect that most of the Game of the Decade results are fraudulent, though, so I wouldn’t be surprised if TP lays an egg and way underperforms.

So, I've mulled over this match more than most people probably have. The obvious decision is Mario 64 -- it went even with Link to the Past, it's a 90s game, it's Mario freakin' 64. It's understandably the easy, safe pick. You could even go further and say GOTD games have done nothing but disappoint, with FF10 getting doubled by CT a perfect example.

But Twilight Princess? It's Zelda.

In a Nintendo match, that matters more than you might think. When was the last time Zelda was on the losing end of a 1v1 Nintendo match? It's not impossible, but it's a rare event. Zelda is just the universal language of Nintendo on the Internet.

And then maybe the most important thing -- round 2. TP and SM64 basically had the same percentage, it was like 66% to 64%. Now who would you take -- Persona 4 or Final Fantasy Tactics? At first glance, FFT seems like a safe bet, but FFT has never been all that here. In fact, it's got a pretty weak contest history. Persona 4 feels like the kind of game that would totally take advantage of that. I can see P4 topping FFT, which puts TP basically even with Mario 64, which then you add in SFF...!

I think Twilight Princess has held up in general. Maybe credit that to Skyward Sword, or people coming back around on it, but TP is still one of the most popular Zelda games. It's second only to Ocarina of Time in sales and playrate, and it just got a fresh take with Twilight Princess HD. I don't think TP is gonna go the way of FF10. I think it can stand up to the 90s and maybe show there is one modern game GameFAQs supports.

BONUS: the tides are shifting with Undertale unleashed on the contest. It may not seem like it now, but the Zelda rally is gonna get started. Brace yourself for the most hyped video game of all-time

Prediction: Twilight Princess - 53.6%

It's telling you that you should like Mario 64 and other Zelda games more.

I kid, even though I had a total blast revisiting Mario 64 last year I did find plenty of frustrating moments. Mostly involving backtracking or the occasional bad gameplay mechanic (hello Wing Cap!). Surprisingly the game's infamous camera problems rarely showed up, and the few times they did I just thought it was funny and it never really messed with my gameplay.

Mario deserves to kick TP's ass. Would you rather have a 3d Zelda that isn't even the best in its series beat the most important 3d game of all time?

Banjo Kazooie and Banjo Tooie both made Mario 64 obsolete, imo.

While nothing has really made TP obsolete.

Only thing OoT does better than TP is being a little harder to beat, imo.

As in "You need 2-3 faries to beat the game instead of 1".

TP does everything else better.
anyway, I'm glad skyrim was at least somewhat legitimized. it's not a monster, but it looks like it's about on par with fallout 3, which is pretty good for a western game. I'll take it.

I feel like you can't have both be true now! TP being a half step behind Wind Waker means Mario 64 and FFVI are probably on the same level, and vice-versa.

Lets ignore the fact that OoT is 7 years older

OoT still has more sidequests, it has magic and far better pacing.

If TP came out in 2000 then it might look better but it came out in 2006. For a 2006 Zelda its average. Majoras Mask is pretty much the best successor to OoT by doing it's own thing and having new fresh ideas, even Wind waker was unique and even to some extent Skyward Sword. TP just tried to copy paste with shitty wolf mechanic and a horrible art stle.

Sorry TP is the most overrated Zelda game. For what it was...it should have been so much better. Good thing Mario is showing who's Boss.

1998 OoT was a groundbreaking masterpiece that introduced so many things to 3D Adventure games. 2006 TP was an overrated Clone that was inferior to even games like SOTC and okami in terms of mechanics and only offered awful waggle controls.

I don't care which one is older. I look at those games in a vacumn and see which one is better. TP doesn't have the obligation of revolutionizing the genre just because it came 8 years later, it just has to keep doing what OoT is doing. And it does that, while improving in a few ways. TP wouldn't be any better or worse had it been released in a different year.

It doesn't have magic, but who cares? It has a bunch of cool items and game mechanics, and better sword fighting, as well as better horseback riding. It has great dungeons too.

It has a bigger world, with more characters, and at least as many sidequests. Don't know what made you think OoT has more sidequests, really. Source?

Seriously, you sound like Vlado. Like you can't accept a game that doesn't try to be completely different than the previous ones. That's BS. Games can and should adhere to proven formulas, and only try to change when it's necessary. When they try too hard, we get stuff like WW's sailing mechanic. When they don't, we get jewels like SMB3 and DKC2, which simply improved from what already worked.
(edited 12/2/2015 12:05:36 PM)report
Well his arguments suck but OoT is still a lot better than TP.

Sword fighting is better? Eh, TP is just more complex. Looks cooler sure.

Cool items and game mechanics? I don't really care about gimmick items and setpiece dungeons much. Like the Temple of Time, while really awesome in lore and atmosphere, is a very straightforward dungeon. I wouldn't even say it's badly designed, but it really moves Zelda away from where I want it to be.

Weell I like it too but it got really boring at some points.

Temple of Time sucked I agree, but Arbiter's Grounds, Snowpeak Ruins and City in the Sky were all amazing. The water dungeon was much better than OoT's Water Temple, and Goron Mines was neat too.

And say what you want about gimmicky items, but the three from those dungeons I called amazing were all incredibly fun to use.
