Leon: Wait that's it? That's the entire intro?

Moltar: Yeah! See, I'm trying out this new thing that seems to be all the rage these days, staggered releases!

Lopen: So like, putting out...the intro...in separate parts?

Moltar: Yep, I think it'll be a good way to keep readers hooked and wanting to come back for more.

Tran: Well yes, but generally you would put out a uh...more complete product first and then follow that up with a continuation.

Moltar: Huh? Why would I do that? I mean sure the intro is already complete but I can get the readers to pay more over time if I release it in parts.

Leon: I...don't even know where to begin with all the things that are wrong out that.

Tran: Let's just get to the write-ups already.

Kleenex: Yeah guys! Let's do this!

Division 1: Round 1 - Match 1 – (1) Chrono Trigger vs. (16) Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal

Moltar’s Analysis

alright let's see if i still remember how to do this

First match of a new contest! These usually aren't all that exciting, but that's okay because it doesn't need to be with this new format. Maybe one of the other three matches going on will give us an exciting first day.

This match right here should just be a beatdown for CT. It's got a tough road ahead and a lot of doubters though, so we'll see if the top-seeded game in the bracket can put its foot down and pull off a strong performance early.

Moltar’s Bracket: Chrono Trigger

Moltar’s Prediction: Chrono Trigger - 75%

Transience’s Analysis

OHH YEAH IT'S A CONTEST. TWO TIME ANALYSIS CREW GAME CONTEST CHAMP TRANSIENCE HERE TO COMPLETE THE TRIFECTA. I'm really excited for this contest. Great bracket, 1v1, no division by era, etc. Even the Nintendo games are sectioned off in such a way that we shouldn't see insane domination by one company. We've been waiting for this contest for a damn decade now and finally have it. The only thing getting me down is how each match is going to have some truly pathetic vote totals through the first couple of rounds, More on that to come.

It's not going to matter with Chrono Trigger and Ratchet and Clank 3. If CT was more universally known, this could be the blowout of the contest. I'm not expecting too many games to get 90/10'd this contest, or even 80-20'd. This is about as close as it'll get unless Something Weird happens. R&C probably gets a moderate number of votes by people who have never heard of a Chrono Trigger before, but CT should triple its way to victory pretty clean. Nothing to say here - exactly how it should be on day 1. Oh wait, we have three other matches on the same day. Nevermind!

transience's prediction:
Chrono Trigger - 77%
Ratchet and Clank 3: 23%

Leon’s Analysis

While I’m thrilled to see a Ratchet & Clank game in the bracket (Play Ratchet & Clank), it’s a little sad to see it fed to Chrono Trigger as a 16 seed on the first day of the contest. Not that it really matters too much, because there are few games in this contest UYA could actually beat. While Ratchet has gotten more popular in Character Battles, his games have not, for whatever the reason. UYA only got 31% on Golden Sun in GOTD, after all, and it’s projected to get 22% on Majora’s Mask. I’m not sure we can tell too much about Chrono Trigger from this match considering it’s facing turbo fodder unless it lets R&C get 25%+ or something. Anything other than that is “fine,” I suppose.

Leonhart’s Vote: Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal (Vote Ratchet & Clank)

Leonhart’s Prediction: Chrono Trigger with 80.25%

Kleenex’s Analysis

Can you believe it has been five years since the last contest on this website? Game of the Decade had a lot going for it and it seemed like after the success it had we’d get a lot more contests than this. Oh well, better late than never I suppose. These first few writeups are assuming a reasonable amount of votes - something that might be silly because we still have no idea how four polls a day is going to be set up in terms of homepage layout, etc.

I was a little shocked to find out that Chrono Trigger ended up being the most nominated game in the bracket. Not that isn’t one of the site’s favorite games or anything, but I’m not predicting many great things out of Square this year. That’s a spoiler alert. The result of this match isn’t in question - Chrono Trigger is winning - but how well it does is going to be telling for a lot of games in this contest. Ratchet 3 barely cracked 30% on Golden Sun. Golden Sun. This game is weak (sorry Leon), as is all things Ratchet. Chrono Trigger should theoretically be able to pull big numbers here, but if it doesn’t, it’s going to be a scary prospect for a bunch of other entrants down the road.

Chrono Trigger with 71%

Guest’s Analysis - tkizzle

(1)Chrono Trigger: 80.01%
(16)Ratchet & Clank 3: 19.99%

What an honor and a privilege to kick off this new contest and this iteration of the Crew with its very first guest analysis! I’ve been TOO hyped for this contest to start! Probably nobody on this board actually knows me but I’ve been following these things for quite a few years now, which has gotten me more and more involved with posting here over time and I'm gonna contribute as much as possible this contest!

Anyway, I guess there actually is a match to talk about here, such as it is. Skimming through the Oracle topic I don’t think anyone has taken Chrono Trigger below 70% here; the last time we saw this particular R&C game Golden Sun almost went 70/30 on it, and Chrono is no Golden Sun even if he’s absolutely fallen off a cliff. Which I doubt is even true.

Yeah well I'm probably not gonna have time to do these every match, which is why I'm only on the unofficial crew this time around. Blame mercenaries.

Anyway my general feel for this contest is we're gonna see some really weird results because of the site shrinking, and Chrono Trigger is gonna be a big beneficiary. Remember in 2002 when Crono was all strong and stuff. Yeah, man. I feel like we're gonna get back to those days. It was totally because this site had more indie cred back then... all the cool kids were going to like, cheatcc, you know?

Division 1: Round 1 - Match 2 – (8) Dragon Quest VIII vs. (9) Persona 3

Moltar’s Analysis

Oh hey that was quick, we're already at the first debated match of the contest. It's like no time has passed at all!

We got two non-Final Fantasy JRPGs here so neither is going to be worth much, and the question is which of these are going to be worth slightly more. I'm banking on Persona.

That's more because of the Persona name than Persona 3 itself. The franchise has ballooned in popularity over the years, with Persona 4 looking stronger after every showing it gets, and Persona 5 hype already at high levels.

P3 definitely isn't going to be as strong as P4, but the Persona name alone on the site should take it over a game that Chrono Cross beat without a problem. DQ has also had no reason to get stronger since then either.

let's burn my bread

Moltar’s Bracket: Persona 3

Moltar’s Prediction: Persona 3 - 58%

Transience’s Analysis

This is probably my favourite single matchup this contest. Both of these games sit in or around my top 25.
Dragon Quest 8 feels like it should be popular. But.. it's just not. Despite being a top 3 JRPG series worldwide, DQ has never had a poll result that reflected that. It lost 61/39 to Chrono Cross (which honestly isn't that bad) and there's a best RPG series poll out there where it lost to Suikoden and tied with Phantasy Star. Ouch. DQ8 permeated the mainstream in ways that the original games couldn't, but it still never caught on and we haven't seen a proper sequel to that game in ten years now.

Persona 3 isn't on Persona 4's level -- but the Persona name has really caught on in recent years. I don't think it has the cache that DQ does but the core fan following is big. Let's just say that Persona 5's impending release is a bigger deal than DQ11 will be here. I don't necessarily agree with that, but I also can't come up with a good argument for DQ outside of just respect votes. Persona's big enough at this point to negate that.

transience's prediction:
Persona 3: 57%
Dragon Quest 8: 43%

Leon’s Analysis

I think this might have been more of a toss-up if this match had happened in GOTD. They’re fairly close in the X-Stats, for whatever that’s worth. However, in the 5 years since, Persona has grown quite a bit in popularity. While that’s mostly due to Persona 4, I still think Persona 3 will get some residual benefit from it since the two games have crossed over quite a bit. Dragon Quest has never been a popular series on this site. DQVIII is the closest the series has come to making a dent on this site, and it got beaten pretty easily by Chrono Cross. I feel like P3 should win this one fairly comfortably, but the first 8/9 (or 4/5 depending on the bracket format) match of the contest has had a tendency to surprise us in the past, so I won’t completely discount Dragon Quest’s chances here.

Leonhart’s Vote: Persona 3

Kleenex’s Analysis

This match doesn’t really seem debatable to me either. Dragon Quest VIII got hammered by Chrono Cross back in Game of the Decade. Persona 3 got hammered too, but it was by Final Fantasy IX. Persona has grown in popularity significantly since then while Square seemingly doesn’t really want to you know that Dragon Quest still exists. Granted, Persona 4 is where most of the Persona fandom tends to converge, but surely it will extend to P3 enough to win this match cleanly.

Persona 3 with 56%

Guest’s Analysis - pjbasis

Why is this debated? Chrono Cross 60/40'd the strongest Dragon Quest game and I think P3/CC is kind of a tossup. I would give CC the edge but still.

And I just can't imagine anyone but the most diehard DQ fans prefering it over P3. If you played both games, you're 80% gonna vote the game that saved console RPGs for everyone in the 2000s.

What did I put for my oracle?

Persona 3 with 56.56%

Kinda feel like going higher but the playrate might not be nearly as good as P4.

Lopen's Unofficial Guest Analysis:

Persona 3 I feel really isn't too popular here, despite having some respect for Persona 4's strength. Maybe there's some weird poll that says I'm wrong, but for me it really was kind of a hassle to have played it on the PS2. You could've played it on the PSP I guess (that's how I have it) but that isn't much better. Who owns the PSP I mean really.

Point is I found Persona 4 way more accessible.

Many people probably have gone back to play it after Persona 4 was such a big thing, and Dragon Quest is weak, but you know, it's still a rough match I think. Would not be too surprised to see this result flip. I don't think Persona 3 is gonna be strong by any means.

Division 1: Round 1 - Match 3 – (5) Batman: Arkham City vs. (12) Mega Man X

Moltar’s Analysis

Man Day 1 has it all, a blowout, an obscure RPG debatable match, and now an old vs new debatable match!

One of the big overall questions in this contest is this: How are new games going to perform against old games? Veterans here have thrown around the term OldFAQs because this site loves it some old games, and that was pretty much true in 2009, where older generally beat newer when they went head-to-head. Six years later, the older games have gotten even older, and the site seems to be embracing newer games bit-by-bit. So what does that mean for this match?

MMX is the only MM representation here (good job capcom), so MM fans are going to have to get behind it here. In 2009, it got smacked with FF6 and Zelda right off the bat. It still put up solid numbers, and other polls have shown that when MM is away from Mario and Zelda, it excels.

Batman is no pushover and did decently in the 2011 GotY poll with beasts like Zelda and Skyrim. It certainly has the strength to beat MMX if age plays a big factor. However, until new games prove otherwise, I'm going to side with old and nostalgia here.

Moltar’s Bracket: MMX

Moltar’s Prediction: MMX - 55%

Transience’s Analysis

What's this? A new game vs. an old game? Stupid as it sounds, we've never seen a matchup like this ever. We've got Arkham City, a well-liked modern franchise, and Mega Man X, a relic of days past that is held in high regard. We can dig into the polls pretty deep and come to a conclusion, but what we can't tell is how the site will skew between old and new.

Mega Man X is 22 years old. The series peaked 22 years ago and has never come close to making a comeback. Yeah, there were smaller games like the excellent Mega Man 9 and yeah, MM is in Smash. Mega Man retains his popularity thanks to being a video game icon with the best design around. But do people play his games anymore? I mean, Mega Man X is a 12 seed and Mega Man 2 didn't even make the bracket. MMX's sole appearance was a clear loss to a GB Zelda game.

Arkham City, on the other hand, has some impressive results to its name. It beat Portal 2 handily and came in third in the 2011 GOTY to Skyrim and Skyward Sword. Not bad! Arkham Asylum also 60/40'd TF2 before going down 59/41 to Fallout 3. Fallout 3's a respectable top 20ish game on this website so staying above 40% shows that it's legit.

The limited data we have points to Arkham City, so far as we can see. It's got better performances and more relevance. And yet.. I'm not going to pick it. I think there's a gap on this website between what's liked and what's respected. Mega Man X is a game for all time and Batman will never be seen in that light. There are people who grew up with Mega Man X that will swear by it forever. Does Arkham City have that kind of respect?

This site caters to nostalgia above all else: games from the 90s have the strongest foothold. People think that Majora's Mask is a really popular game for winning the last game contest but that's just because it missed out on all the late 90s killers that we have on this website. MMX is right on the border of being aged out of this contest but I think it'll stand up to Arkham City pretty easily here. I actually don't think it'll be that close.

transience's prediction:
Mega Man X - 56%
Arkham City - 44%

Leon’s Analysis

This is the first tough call of the contest, at least for me. We don’t have much data on either of these games. Arkham Asylum did well in GOTD, but we haven’t seen Arkham City outside of GOTY polls, where it got doubled by Skyrim (which may not be a bad result, honestly). Mega Man X showed up in the 4-way Games Contest in 2009, where it got a rough draw with FFVI and Link’s Awakening but held up fairly well, all things considered. I know some people got upset that no Mega Man Classic games got in, but I feel like MMX1 is easily the strongest representative from the series as a whole. It seemed to show that in the 2009 contest, and I think being on the SNES rather than the NES helps it out. With few exceptions, I feel like anything before the SNES isn’t going to have much strength. It pretty much has to be widespread classic game like Mario 3, and none of the NES Mega Man games fit the bill, at least in my opinion. Mega Man X is a classic platformer. Zero is a popular character on this site, and that popularity has to come from somewhere, you’d think!

Anyway, I can’t really give you a statistically deduced answer on who to pick here (which is honestly a good thing for this contest, in my opinion!), but I’m leaning toward Mega Man X. I think it will be close either way. This is our first real “Old vs. new” toss-up match ever now that we finally got a bracket without divisions by era, so this is essentially brand new territory! What we’ve seen in the past (from X-Stats anyway) is that new games tend to be stronger on the average than old games, but it’s rare to see a new game have elite level strength. What causes that disparity between old and new? Who knows! Could be old games benefiting from nostalgia while newer games are more likely to have been played due to recency (aside from the classic elite level games, most old games probably have fairly low play rates, I’d wager). That’s just my hypothesis, but I’m excited to see how this match plays out regardless of the outcome!

Leonhart’s Vote: Mega Man X

Leonhart’s Prediction: Mega Man X with 52.50%

Kleenex’s Analysis

Match #3, on the other hand, I’m having a tougher time with. Mega Man X is the only Mega Man game in the entire bracket. I’m not entirely sure how many people still care about Mega Man. People love The Batman! Should be easy right? Unfortunately, Arkham city was four years ago, and since then he’s had two game that haven’t really seemed to get people hoppin’ and boppin’ like those first two did. I wonder if that marred experience is going to drag Batman down to the depths of Mega Man. A week or two ago I said I was probably going to side with newer games in close matches, and I originally had Batman winning here, but the process of writing this paragraph has convinced to me HOTSWAP at the last minute. What can go wrong?

Edit: Just kidding, changed my mind again.

Batman: Arkham City with 52%

Guest’s Analysis - tennisboy213

BGE3 is finally here! And I get to do a guest write-up on day 1! Awesome!

Anyway this is a debatable match. Mega Man X is the only representative of its series and probably the strongest game in its series. We've never seen Batman: Arkham City before as it was released after our last games contest. So it is a new(er) game. MMX is an old game. Old > New in debatable matches.

(5) Batman: Arkham City - 44%
(12) Mega Man X - 56%

Crew Consensus: MMX ends up being the favorite and avoids the Crew Curse

Batman was strong in the GotD contest, but I feel like Batman is kind of a phase we've all gotten over at this point. I dunno, at least with me it doesn't seem super like, relevant anymore, even if the games were great. Also think the site shrinking will favor the iconic stuff and RPGs more often than not. Guess time will tell on that. Could see this going either way, but yeah I'll put my money on Mega Man X here.

Crew Curse would be strong for sure. I think if you hold this in 2010 Batman should definitely be the favorite here and by a lot. Only reason I'm picking MMX is speculation on the site-- weird to see it be the favorite since I thought I was somewhat unique with that perspective. Then again I see a lot of NOSTALGIA in these write-ups so maybe not.
