Character Battle IX Contest Analysis Crew - Part 5

The funny part is League of Legends destroying everyone I wouldn't even mind that much (aside from the rampant obvious cheating). But Draven is so awful.

It does make me feel better that my estimate was that Ryu/X were getting about 30% of the legitimately rallied votes, however. The fanbase isn't completely dronelike, at least.

I don't think League triples OOT or anything (though it could [and probably should]). a lot of this is that it's Draven.

Division 2: Round 2 - Match 86 – (2) Phoenix Wright vs. (23) Vincent Valentine vs. (11) Mewtwo

Moltar’s Analysis

Phoenix
Round 1 - 44.30% vs. Marth and Nightmare

Good job Phoenix you beat okay competition

Vincent
Round 1 - 53.50% vs. KOS-MOS and Dunban

Vincent doesn't look good here...same goes for that match pic

Mewtwo
Round 1 - 81.80% vs. Zero (999) and Chester

Biggest blowout against the weakest competition

Vincent > Mewtwo > Phoenix seems obvious enough with Vincent being a near-elite, Mewtwo being a decent midcarder, and Phoenix being a low midcarder. Still, there has been some talk of Mewtwo upsetting Vincent because FF7 sucks now and Pokemon rocks or something. I'm not buying Mewtwo over Vincent just because Mewtwo killed the weakest entrant in the contest.

Now Vincent disappointing against Mewtwo is something I can see, but he should be fine here now that he's the only RPG character in the match.

Moltar’s Prediction: Phoenix: 24% - Vincent: 41% - Mewtwo: 35%

Lopen’s Analysis

Vincent looks like my barber and Phoenix Wright looks like his barber. I also don't really feel like quotes give much of a boost after seeing Tharja underwhelm after that amazing quote she had, so yeah.

Vincent actually I feel is the worst character for FFVII to get a bad pic, and the type of character that is going to age the worst. He's a guy who runs off purely design and people's love for the game. There isn't much depth or lasting appeal there. Vincent is going to look sad here.

If quotes had more of an effect, I'd take Phoenix Wright, but for now hail Mewtwo

OH MAH GOODNESS DID HE... DID HE JUST?

Lopen's prediction:
Mewtwo - 36.05%
Phoenix Wright - 32.05%
Vincent - 31.90%

Leonhart’s Analysis

Phoenix Wright: Voted Best Debater

Vincent Valentine: Voted Most Optional

Mewtwo: Voted Best Scientific Breakthrough

While there’s been a lot of debate on whether Mewtwo can beat Vincent, I think the real issue is whether or not he can beat Phoenix! We’ve seen Vincent put up lackluster first round performances against not so good competition and then rebound against better competition the next round (See: Falco 2008). I think he’ll be fine here. People have given Mewtwo more credit than he deserves over the years though. He’s never really looked THAT great in a contest. I think people feel like he SHOULD be stronger than he is and they give him the benefit of the doubt even though he hasn’t really earned it. Mewtwo nearly lost to Midna once upon a time. Do I think Phoenix could beat Midna? You better believe it. Plus, it’s a night match, something that works in both Phoenix’s and Vincent’s favor, but not Mewtwo. Get ready for Nick to pull a Turnabout on PokeFAQs here!

Leonhart’s Vote: Phoenix Wright

Leonhart’s Prediction:

Vincent Valentine – 42.50%
Phoenix Wright – 30.00%
Mewtwo – 27.50%

Kleenex’s Analysis

Hey look, here's a potentially interesting match! FF7 looked like crap last round, right! Aeris lost to Shepard! Barret is...well Barret is actually doing a bit better than I expected, but I digress. If you really think Pokemon has blown the roof off (or you are Karma Hunter), this might a saucy upset. I have a hard time pulling the trigger on it, though, just because Vincent and Mewtwo are super far apart in historic strength. Mewtwo almost lost to Midna once! And if Phoenix is going to overlap with anyone, it'll probably be Mewtwo. So yeah.

Kleenex's Prediction
Phoenix with 23.00%
Vincent with 41.00%
Mewtwo with 36.00%

Transience’s Analysis

Who the hell is that?

Despite that awful picture, despite this site's fascination with Pokemon, and despite this site's thoughts on FF7 dying, Vincent should still easily take this. So long as everyone knows who the hell he is, anyway. Good thing it's a night match.

transience's prediction: Vincent with 41%, Mewtwo with 36%, Phoenix with 23%

KP's Analysis

After Draven, who cares

Vincent - 37%
Mewtwo - 36%
Wright - 27%

Guest’s Analysis - pjbasis

FFVII will lose to Mass Effect and beat Pokemon. Best contest ever? Besides the whole Draven thing

Vincent - 41.19%
Mewtwo - 37.54%
Phoenix - 21.27%

Vincent "60% on KOS-MOS" steps up to bat against Mewtwo, who we have very little information on. He killed round one, but I would have expected Shadow to break 75% against those guys so who knows what that means. Phoenix beat Marth comfortably enough, but I think he's out of his league here. Marth was likely heavily overrated because he went against Sephiroth, and I'm not as sold on Smash as many this year anyway. Will be voting for and cheering him on anyway though!

So Vincent vs. Mewtwo. I've been pretty impressed with Pokemon so far, and respect Mewtwo's 41% on Ganon from 2010. Vincent's R1 performance sent alarm bells ringing, and his picture sucks here. He trades on design/image more than other FFVII so I think that'll hurt him. Maybe Vincent can bring the game when it matters, but I'm sceptical.

Bracket: Vincent
Expert: Mewtwo > Vincent > Phoenix
Oracle: Mewtwo - 36.5%; Vincent - 36%; Phoenix - 27.5%

Division 2: Round 2 - Match 87 – (16) The Boss vs. (15) Sub-Zero vs. (7) Bowser

Moltar’s Analysis

The Boss
Round 1 - 45.62% vs. Chrom and Heavy

Decent showing from Boss, though these guys were probably weak

Sub-Zero
Round 1 - 49.02% vs. Garrus and Frank

Better showing against better competition

Bowser
Round 1 - 60.55% vs. Meta Knight and Archer

King Koopa does well in R1

Bowser should take this without a problem and set up that nice Sonic/Vincent/Bowser match for next rou-OH WAIT

Subby beats The Boss for second as one would expect. Don't think we'll get any surprises here, just the natural order of strength.

Moltar’s Prediction: The Boss: 25% - Sub-Zero: 31% - Bowser: 44%

Lopen’s Analysis

Man, Scorpion is so much better for this quote format it ain't even funny, man. What's Sub-Zero gonna say... DDDTTTHHHZZ? ... that's the sound of his freeze ball thing... what? Yes it is! I swear.

Uh anyway I thought Sub-Zero had a chance here when the bracket came out. Not really seeing it now. Nintendo dominance too strong. Bowser should walk away with this and The Boss is probably closer to Sub-Zero than Sub-Zero is to Bowser when this is all said and done. Also Scorpion looking like a bit of a jobber vs Sora doesn't exactly inspire confidence either.

Lopen's prediction:
Bowser - 44.38%
Sub-Zero - 31.58%
The Boss - 24.04%

Leonhart’s Analysis

The Boss: Voted Most Loyal

Sub-Zero: Voted Coolest Kid in School

Bowser: Voted King of Awesome

This is actually a pretty solid group of characters, but the hierarchy should be pretty clear. Bowser wins, Sub-Zero comes in second, The Boss comes in third. For some reason, Board 8 always underestimates Sub-Zero, and I think he’ll surprise people here against Bowser. Wish I had the guts to pull the trigger on an upset here, but I don’t think it’s likely. It’s more likely that Subby loses cleanly but respectably.

Leonhart’s Vote: Sub-Zero

Leonhart’s Prediction:

Bowser – 40.00%
Sub-Zero – 34.00%
The Boss – 26.00%

Kleenex’s Analysis

Bowser is a tier above Sub-Zero. Sub-Zero is a tier above The Boss. Sounds like the perfect recipe for a 44/33/22 match!

Kleenex's Prediction
The Boss with 22.22%
Sub-Zero with 33.33%
Bowser with 44.45%

Transience’s Analysis

Huh. This contest seems super unpredictable suddenly. Too bad Mewtwo winning means Bowser has no chance against Sonic.

Anyway, Bowser wins this, Sub-Zero is clearly second and The Boss is third. I'd like to find a way for Sub-Zero to hang with Bowser, but if Ryu couldn't come close, why would Sub?

transience's prediction: Bowser with 46%, Sub-Zero with 34%, The Boss with 20%

KP's Analysis

yawn

Bowser - 43%
Sub-Zero - 34%
The Boss - 23%

Guest’s Analysis - LOZLTTP

Not only is Bowser, well, Bowser...he's also the only Nintendo character in this battle. There's no way he finishes anything but first.

As for the runner up, Sub-Zero looks really good here. He's historically been very strong in these contests, and his victory over Garrus is a lot more impressive to me than stomping on lightweights like Chrom and Heavy. Wrex's upset from round one only serves to make Garrus (and by extension Sub-Zero) look that much better.

Bowser - 45%
Sub-Zero - 35%
The Boss - 20%

Crew Consensus: Bowser toasts the competition

I think I've figured it out.

Bacon thinks he's finally learned how LFF works, and as per the goal of making this a tribute to the Noble Nine, he wanted a dual Nintendo split helping Sonic out.

Too bad for him that Bowser probably overlaps with Sonic just as much as he does with Mewtwo! Still think Sonic can win this, but it's an uphill battle, and if Link falls to Draven the rally will be on to try to get a Pokémon into a situation to fight Draven off properly (although an icon like Sonic or Bowser might dilute Draven's rally a bit better anyway). Add in the fact that it's almost impossible for Crono and Mega to avoid the screwjob, and we could have almost half the Noble Nine miss the final nine!
