Oof, slept in. Kotetsu's Guest Analysis Kaim should be guaranteed a respectable third place showing unless one of the other two turns out to be a gigantic bust, so we can throw him there. How the other two stand against each other isn't clear. Western characters from recent games have looked awful on the whole, while obscure RPG characters have done well, and FF characters with Dissidia pedigree have been one of the few groups to be genuinely impressive so far. But Elizabeth, who I'd expect to be slightly stronger than Booker - if not by as much as people often suggest - did win her poll easily, even if it was against Poison and Thrall. Gilgamesh made the rivals contest with Bartz and didn't manage to double Guybrush. Locke, surely stronger than both Bartz and he, got wrecked by Ness, and his Dissidia presence is relegated to the decidedly less popular sequel. Bioshock Infinite strikes me as a big enough deal that you'd need to nearer to Ness than that to be its leads. While I can absolutely understand the move to abandon the western ship in light of their dire showings, I think I'll be going down with it. Book it, Booker. Division 6: Round 1 - Match 51 – (8) Groose vs. (11) Lu Bu vs. (20) Yoshimitsu Moltar’s Analysis Groose Getting loose all over this Contest Lu Bu Do not pursue Round 2 Yoshimitsu this group is weird This is actually a match we're having in 2013. I don't even know what to make of this group. Anyway, I think Groose wins easily, but the issue is that there shouldn't ever be a case where I can say that Groose easily wins a Contest match. Dynasty Warriors and Tekken/SC aren't worth much on GameFAQs, while Zelda is. That goes for characters from those series too. Skyward Sword might be one of the weaker Zelda games in terms of strength, but it's still head and shoulders above those other series. That alone gives me enough confidence to back Groose here. Plus, if this one is close, you know who is going to get rally support. That's just insurance for me. Moltar’s Prediction: Groose: 45% - Lu Bu: 25% - Yoshimitsu: 30% Lopen’s Analysis When the bracket was released, I thought Yoshimitsu had this for sure. Then Nightmare looked like a complete chump. Strangely enough, however, I... still think he has it. The "smart" pick seems to be Groose here but I just can't pick him. I think that's just getting a little too smart for our own good. Skyward Sword was less appreciated than a lot of Zeldas and Groose is pretty minor. Yoshimitsu just overwhelmingly feels like the "common sense" pick to me in this match, so I'm not going to shy away from it... not this time. Thinking about it, this feels a lot like N/Bayonetta/whoever the third one was to me. There's a mainstream recognizable name and random Nintendo Character C that's from a newer game in a big series, and a more obscure #3. Dynasty Warriors is getting bigger all the time and I think Lu Bu actually has the most legit fans of this bunch (throw Solid Snake in here as a fourth and I have Lu Bu getting #2) so Lu Bu winning wouldn't completely surprise me... but... yeah... I like Yoshimitsu to make a joke of this poll here, Nightmare's result be damned. Lopen's prediction: Yoshimitsu - 45.82% Groose - 30.30% Lu Bu - 23.88% Leonhart’s Analysis The further in this division we go, the more I realize what a mess this thing is. At first, I had Yoshimitsu winning because Skyward Sword is probably one of the weaker mainline Zeldas and Groose isn’t really an important character, from what I’ve been told. But then I remembered how badly Yoshimitsu did in the vote-in in 2010, and I started having second thoughts about the pick. Although the site isn’t big on Tekken or SoulCalibur, but people should at least know who he is, I think. I dunno. This match is dumb. Lu Bu’s got no shot though because not even Board 8 cares about Dynasty Warriors. Oh, and if you think Lu Bu will do well because he’s based on a historical figure and people will recognize the name, you clearly got taught different stuff in your history classes than I did because we never learned about this guy when I was in school! I have Yoshimitsu in my bracket and I kinda regret that now, but honestly I'd regret having any of these three at the moment. Groose is from Zelda and kinda meme-ish, while Lu Bu is just kinda meme-ish. Perhaps if Lu Bu was from Zelda this could be close. Groose vs. Lu Bu vs. Yoshimitsu cracks me up every time I see it. Anyway, Groose probably wins because he's from Zelda and the other two aren't (also Yoshimitsu looked terrible in his one poll), but I wouldn't be surprised if LU BU wins this simply because it's LU BU. I think IT'S LU BU, RUN is popular enough on the internet these days to give him a bit of a boost. Groose - 41% Lu Bu - 33% Yoshimitsu - 26% Guest’s Analysis - Black Turtle Groose Tingle 2.0 Lu Bu Pro-tip: Do not pursue him Yoshimitsu Man, this match both sucks AND blows Analysis Well folks, this is it, easily the most debated and up-in-the-air matchup of the first round. It doesn't help that all 3 of these characters likely qualify as turbofodder. I say likely, because we really don't have any idea how ANY of them would stack up in a normal contest. Groose supporters claim that simply being from a Zelda game would carry him forward, and I'd be inclined to agree with them if he was from any game in the series except Skyward Sword. I'd wager that Skyward Sword has the lowest playrate out of any Zelda game (at least in GameFAQs terms). Lu Bu supporters claim that being in all of the Dynasty Warriors games would help him through, but RotTK games are notorious for their ensemble casts, and I'm not quite sure Lu Bu is recognizable enough for people to remember where he's from. This leaves Yoshimitsu of Tekken fame. His game probably has the highest playrate of the 3, and he's definitely more standout than Groose or Lu Bu. I think the intangibles support him taking the match. Then again, I have no clue how this will really turn out, and I'm basically just guessing at this point, along with everyone else. Yeah,
this match is awful. I had Yoshimitsu > Groose > Lu Bu right up
until the Crono/Kerrigan/Missile match, and then we found out that there
are preplanned rallies for Groose, and these three all look like fodder
so the one with the pre-planned rally gets my Expert Challenge pick. --- RIP GrapefruitKing and Emporer_Kazbar. You will be missed. |
