Hey everyone, it’s Contest time again! That means the Contest Analysis Crew is back once again! Our goal is to analyze and predict each match in this Contest, and of course, you will read the write-ups and laugh at us when we’re wrong. So without further ado, here’s the line-up for this Contest. Division 2: Round 1 - Match 15 – (8) Chester vs. (11) Mewtwo vs. (20) Zero (999) Moltar’s Analysis Chester Congrats Aga Mewtwo So nice they made him twice (or is it thrice now) Zero (999) yessssssssss a 999 rep Well Mewtwo hit the jackpot here. He's got a match with the Board 8 rallied Chester, who hardly anyone knows, and a 999 character, a great game that only like 9 people played. Meanwhile, Mewtwo is a liked Pokemon that everyone is familiar with. He could put up the biggest blowout we've seen yet here. As for second, I'll take the game that 9 people played over the game that Board 8 made. Moltar’s Bracket: Mewtwo > Zero (999) > Chester Moltar’s Prediction: Chester: 5% - Mewtwo: 77% - Zero (999): 18% Lopen’s Analysis Hey guys remember you need to vote CHESTER here or else you're not a real member of the b8 community. HE MUST WIN THOSE OPENING SECONDS, GUYS. DO IT. 0999 vs Chester will be interesting, maybe. If people get a hankering for some cheesy snacks the second guy might actually get some non b8 votes. Mewtwo can learn any TM I wonder if there's a trash compactor move he can use to get this crap off the front page. Hold on this Mewtwo only knows String Shot and Tackle? Eh, he'll manage. Lopen's prediction: Mewtwo - 78.66% 0999 - 17.03% I might vote for this if it was a cheetah - 4.31% Leonhart’s Analysis This match. This match. I can’t believe something like this actually exists. Mewtwo’s probably got a decent shot at the blowout of the contest despite him not really being worth that much because it’s Chester from a Board 8 game and Zero (from 999, not Mega Man X). That being said, I’d refrain from taking Mewtwo to get a ridiculously high percentage here. This one kind of reminds me of DMC3 vs. Mother 3 back in GOTD, where many people (myself included) were taking DMC3 to score a crazy blowout because Mother 3 never came out in America. Despite well over half of this site loving Pokemon more than life itself at this point, I still think there’s a decent amount of people out there who will still anti-vote it enough to keep Mewtwo from doing something crazy like 85% or something. Leonhart’s Vote: Zero Leonhart’s Prediction: Mewtwo – 75.00% Zero – 16.12% Chester – 8.88% Kleenex’s Analysis What a ridiculous match. Mewtwo wins by a longshot, there's really no need for analysis tonight. So instead I'm going to rant about the other two entrants. Chester might be the derpiest motherf***er we've ever seen. Seriously, just look at that picture. And I kinda thought that was the whole point - a mass nomination rally for someone would wouldn't stand a chance in a match a la Jay Solano. Instead, I'm apparently supposed to have some sort of obligation to vote for him because the game was made by aga? I don't understand that at all. Maybe the game's great, I dunno - I haven't played it. If you're voting for Chester because you like Chester, by all means. On
the subject of Zero, the people who decided to rally for Zero instead
of any actual character from the game(s) are stupid. No character from
999 or VLR was ever going to do well, but at least rally behind an
actual character rather than what amounts to an avatar. He's not really
going to do any better because he's "iconic" or whatever - no one has
played the games anyway! And I've seen people say he's got a great
design, which I don't really get either. It's just a dude with a gas
mask. Also Mewtwo sucks because he's a Pokemon. Kleenex's Prediction Chester with 8.18% Mewtwo with 72.66% Zero with 19.14% Transience’s Analysis REALLY? TRANSIENCE'S PREDICTION: MEWTWO WITH 75.46%, ZERO WITH 16.68%, CHESTER WITH 7.86% KP's Analysis There's been a lot of matches in this contest that seemed like they would be blowouts but didn't deliver. Mewtwo has possible the best chance out of anyone at looking like a godslayer here. He's a well-known early Pokemon that no one dislikes, was in that movie, ect. Meanwhile, his competition is Chester and a character that's sorta-kinda a character. I get that Zero is supposed to be representative of the Zero Escape series as a whole, but...for a lot of spoiler reasons, it's a strange pick. 999 is a pretty obscure series so none of its characters are going to have much strength regardless. Chester is a literal B8 creation and has many reasons to be the weakest contest character we've ever had. I think the legitimately best thing he has going for him here is the high seed and being the top option, because he's basically got nothing else to draw from! Looking at Chester's absurdly hilarious match pic, I could see him getting 2nd here just based on that, but I guess some fans>no fans. Mewtwo - 74% Zero - 16% Chester - 10% Guest’s Analysis - Ctes This match annoys me a bit, because there's no way Mewtwo should get percentages better than Noble Nine members, but his opponents are just so terrible. The others will benefit from the Mewtwo anti-voting I suppose, though it shouldn't be much. Chester will likely finish last, with very low percentage. But for all that's right, let's rally him to 8%. We have to be careful not giving him more than that though, assuming we can get him even there. It doesn't feel right to have someone close to Tanner level after all. That should be like impossible. Zero should be happy he is able to get this much here, he could really suck in other matches. I hope we wont have to listen to a lot of people going OMG MEWTWO>VINCENT CONFIRMED when Mewtwo scores high here. In any case, this is a boring match that we just have to get over with. Division 2: Round 1 - Match 16 – (3) Chrom vs. (16) The Boss vs. (25) Heavy Moltar’s Analysis Chrom Tharja made it to R2 and he won't. Looks like we know who's better. The Boss what a boss Heavy something something hats Chrom might have the seeding advantage, but we've already seen that FE:A characters aren't all that strong despite that. Heavy could give him a run for his money actually since TF2 is still a thing and Heavy challenged Roxas a few years ago (and Chrom would be lucky to hang with Roxas). The Boss shouldn't have any trouble here. She's looked solid in her past few contest showings, and you know how attached MGS fans are to its characters. Moltar’s Bracket: The Boss > Chrom > Heavy Moltar’s Prediction: Chrom: 34% - The Boss: 39% - Heavy: 27% Lopen’s Analysis Long story short, I have Chrom here. Unfortunately, the long story isn't really that long, either. I don't have a huge amount of conviction in the Chrom pick. It just feels like Fire Emblem Awakening probably has some strength to it (before contest it was due to the abundance of reps and hype on the site for Awakening-- now it's just because they've been performing relatively well) and Chrom's going to be the best rep. Honestly don't feel like The Boss is some huge mountain to scale, either. Keep in mind back when she beat Drake the PS3 still wasn't quite accepted here, and that Drake two years prior was beaten by CATS. The other win under her belt is over Celes which is whatever. And really, The Boss is only going to get weaker as MGS3 ages, so she could be due for a drop here. I don't consider her character on that "timeless" level her strength needs to hold tough. Heavy is an x-factor, but even with the recent Steam hype I don't want to take a primarily PC franchise character to win in anything resembling a debatable match. Also, and perhaps most importantly, this is a day match. That's going to help Chrom most out of this group. Lopen's prediction: Chrom - 39.45% The Boss - 31.05% Heavy - 29.50% Leonhart’s Analysis This match has the potential to be interesting. I don’t think Tharja winning really makes Chrom’s chances look any better here. The Boss has always been a decent low midcarder, and I don’t think a Fire Emblem character can manage that without Smash Bros. support. I think she’d put up a decent fight against Marth or Ike, so her winning this match seems pretty clear cut to me. I honestly think Heavy gets second place here, actually. Team Fortress 2 seems to get more popular each year, and while I never expect him to be a strong character, I think he’s decent enough to squeak by Chrom for second. Leonhart’s Vote: The Boss Leonhart’s Prediction: The Boss – 37.50% Heavy – 32.00% Chrom – 30.50% Kleenex’s Analysis So Fire Emblem character have kinda not been super impressive so far. Tharja winning by the slimmest of margins and Marth getting beaten pretty soundly by Phoenix do not inspire much faith in Chrom for me, which is good because I took The Boss to win this match! The Boss isn't particular strong either, but she is at least a known quantity and has some wins under her belt. If anything I'm actually kinda worried about Heavy coming from out of nowhere and winning this match. I'm not planning on pulling the trigger on an upset or anything, but if it happens let it be known that it was said here first (or second, third, or fourth, depending on what Moltar, Lopen and Leon write)! Transience’s Analysis I'M NOT SURE WHAT TO DO ABOUT CHROM. HE SHOULD PROBABLY BE THE MOST POPULAR CHARACTER FROM AWAKENING, BETTER THAN LUCINA, AND I WOULD NEVER CONSIDER THE BOSS OVER DRACULA. IT'S ALSO A DAY MATCH, THE FIRST ONE FIRE EMBLEM HAS GOTTEN, WHICH IS A CLEAR EDGE OVER METAL GEAR SOLID. I FEEL LIKE CHROM HAS EVERY REASON TO WIN THIS MATCH -- AND YET, I DON'T FEEL RIGHT PICKING IT BECAUSE IT'S A 3DS RPG THAT'S NOT *THAT* POPULAR AGAINST A PROVEN CHARACTER. I ALSO DON'T FEEL LIKE FIRE EMBLEM IS POPULAR ENOUGH ON ITS OWN. IT NEEDS SMASH TO REALLY HAVE A STRONG CHARACTER. I'D PICK IKE OVER THE BOSS, BUT NOT CHROM. TRANSIENCE'S PREDICTION: THE BOSS WITH 36.45%, CHROM WITH 34.44%, HEAVY WITH 29.11% KP's Analysis This is an interesting matchup. The Boss has some decent wins under her belt, and the MGS fanbase likes her a lot. Chrom is the typical new blood that's overseeded, but The Boss isn't that strong so he has a legitimate chance at winning here. He should be a good bit stronger than Tharja. Heavy doesn't have the best record - he kinda lost to Roxas - but he's never looked outright terrible and with TF2 going free-to-play he's probably had a lot more exposure since 2010. I think I'm going with The Boss here, for several reasons. While Chrom is a good representative of his game, it's still a game with an ensemble cast and Chrom himself doesn't stand out very much in it. TF2 may have gotten more exposure, but I think peak TF2 time was a year or two ago. People are starting to move on from the game. The Boss hasn't really faded from people's minds yet and has enough good showings under her belt for me to feel pretty good in taking her here. Run this match in a year and Chrom probably wins. His SSB4 announcement is inevitable, but it'll come far too late to save him. The Boss - 37% Chrom - 33% Heavy - 30% Guest’s Analysis - SuorGenoveffa As a huge Fire Emblem fan, I couldn't pass up the chance to analyze a match involving a character from the series. So far, FE has performed almost exactly as I expected (Tharja winning marginally, Lucina not getting close to Dracula and Phoenix beating Marth comfortably), so I see no reason not to stick to my gut feeling for this match too. Chrom may be the protagonist from the most successful game in the series, but The Boss is a respected character from one of the biggest franchises in gaming, and while she hasn't performed as a top threat in the past, I think she's good enough to beat a Fire Emblem character that hasn't had a Smash Bros. boost, even a main character. I know some people on the board have Heavy with a higher percentage than this and some above Chrom. Personally, I don't think he will factor much in this match, his past appearances don't bring much to his cause and Chrom should be a good deal stronger than Tharja/Lucina and may benefit from a better Nintendo boost, being the face of Fire Emblem: Awakening and all.
