wouldn't have expected Barret to be all that great, anyway. Yeah, he's
from FFVII, but it's probably the worst year to be something from FFVII.

knew I should've left the "except for Lopen" line in the end of my
analysis. Only one who went higher than me, and Reimu's percentage has
only dropped 0.34% over the last hour so I doubt it'll go low enough for
me to get that point. ...wait a minute, I am getting a point for
only expecting Barret to get "roughly a doubling" on Layton, giving me
the lowest percentage which is still far ahead of what he's going to

Division 2: Round 1 - Match 13 – (2) Phoenix Wright vs. (17) Marth vs. (26) Nightmare Moltar’s Analysis Phoenix I object to the fact that Phoenix is stronger than Nightmare Marth Some old and busted Fire Emblem Nightmare something something nightmare that he's going to lose Decent characters here. Phoenix has been getting stronger each year, but he's basically just gone from nothing to low midcarder. Marth is high fodder, as is Nightmare. From that alone you can pretty much guess where I'm going with this. Phoenix has some other intangibles, like seeding, on his side too. A night match is also very beneficial here, as Phoenix is definitely more of a early/night character while Marth does far better during the day since he's (pretty much) purely Smash. Also, if the match is close, a Phoenix rally is much more likely than a Marth rally. Nightmare has an outside shot here if Phoenix and Marth both suck it up, but I wouldn't count on that. He should do alright, but he's a clear step behind in likability and relevance between these two. Moltar’s Bracket: Phoenix > Marth > Nightmare Moltar’s Prediction: Phoenix: 38% - Marth: 34% - Nightmare: 28% Lopen’s Analysis I'll be honest, I have no idea whatsoever how this match goes. I think all three have a chance. Now, if I was disregarding contest history entirely, I think I'd go with Nightmare. Soul Calibur isn't a joke, and he's got the sore thumb factor going for him... but he's disappointed and just hasn't even made the field most of the time. I get the feeling that GameFAQs is apathetic towards this guy, despite Soul Calibur being decent, for whatever reason. On the other hand, just considering contest history, I like Marth. He just has more impressive wins under his belt. But me? I look above to the KOS-MOS and channel the spirits of the Warriors... and I take in all the elements as the power of the universal mind begins to swell, and I think Phoenix Wright is the best guy here. The three way format favors him as he's going to have the most resilient fanbase of the three, and he's just been more relevant lately. Maybe he'll get the EVO boost with all those Phoenix Wright teams you see on the Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 streams... okay, maybe not. But still. In any case, I won't be touching this one in EXPERT MODE with a 10 foot pole. Lopen's prediction: Phoenix Wright - 36.61% Marth - 33.07% Nightmare - 30.32% Leonhart’s Analysis Here’s one of my most anticipated matches of the first round right here. In 2010, these three characters were probably all around the same strength level. Since then, Nightmare has had SoulCalibur V, which nobody liked. Marth hasn’t had anything, but Fire Emblem’s general increase in popularity could help him out a bit. Phoenix Wright has been in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and has a brand new game coming out in the near future, so his stock has probably never been higher than it is right now. Factor in the fact that this is a 12-hour night match, which means we get Phoenix at his best and Marth at his worst, and I’m siding with Wrighto here. In a 24-hour match or a 12-hour day match, I’d probably go with Marth, but things seem to be pointing toward a victory for Phoenix. Plus, you know if it’s close at the end, there’s no way Phoenix will lose. Don’t sleep on Nightmare though (get it). I feel like he’s getting overlooked here because it’s literally the Board 8 mascot and a character from Board 8’s favorite series (Smash Bros., not Fire Emblem, silly) and because nobody here cares about SoulCalibur except for Weaku. He’s proven to be a decent low midcarder in his contest appearances, which means these guys aren’t out of his league. Nightmare winning here wouldn’t totally surprise me. |
Leonhart’s Vote: Phoenix Wright Leonhart’s Prediction: Phoenix Wright – 35.00% Marth – 34.00% Nightmare – 31.00% Kleenex’s Analysis As I started typing out this writeup I felt pretty comfortable that I knew how this match was going to go, but now that I'm thinking about it I'm starting to second-guess myself. All three of these characters are kinda plodding around lower-tier strength, they're all fairly recognizable to the GameFAQs population, and they all have a history of mediocrity. I think what it ultimately comes down to - and what I was probably thinking when I made my bracket - is recency. Phoenix Wright hasn't been heard from since UMvC3 and its been 5 years since the last Ace Attorney game he was in. Soul Calibur V did come out about a year ago, but it did relatively poorly and I don't think it won over any new fans. While Marth hasn't has his own game, he did have cameos in Awakening DLC and you could use him as a unit in battles. Also Smash 4 buzz is starting to kick up, and while he's not CONFIRMED FOR BRAWL...err..SMASH 4 yet, getting people to think about the game might be enough here. Rereading that paragraph back now, and boy is that a weak argument. Whatever, this match is going to be close. Nintendo always wins. Kleenex's Prediction Phoenix with 33.29% Marth with 35.47% Nightmare with 31.24% Transience’s Analysis It's Evo day (not to mention my birthday) so I'm going to get right to it. These matches, especially night matches, are getting like 30,000 votes at most. The last match got 23,000. That means that in a fairly even threeway match, you only need about 8,000 votes to win. As this website gets more and more irrelevant, new users stop coming here. In 2003, 48% of our users were between the ages of 13 and 17. Now? As of the last poll, only 5% were between 13 and 16, and only 19% between 17 and 20. Our biggest age group now are people in their 20s. The end result is that our userbase has changed from people who only know a few games to people who have been playing for a long time. Phoenix Wright is the kind of character that will absolutely benefit from that, and the kind of guy that can easily bring in a set number of votes. He can't get 40000 votes, but he can get 10000. And that's all he's going to need unless Nightmare just lays a total egg, which honestly is a very big possibility. transience's prediction: Phoenix Wright with 41.67%, Marth with 37.34%, Nightmare with 20.99% KP's Analysis This match has been discussed to death, so I'll keep it simple: I've had Wright>Marth>Nightmare since Day 1 and nothing that's happened so far has given me any reason to change that. Nightmare might win this, but he's not nearly as relevant these days. He probably would've lost this even in Soul Calibur's heydey - I'm pretty skeptical of how much people actually care about Nightmare. Not sure he can stand up to a super dedicated fanbase and a Nintendo character. Marth has done decently and is Nintendo, so he's a solid pick, but I think Phoenix still beats him with room to spare. In 2010 they looked about even, and Phoenix has had reason to grow since then. New games, UMVC3, more exposure overall. It's a night match, which is very good for him. And I think his fans just care more. Does Marth even have real fans? I think barely anyone on GameFAQs has ever played his games. Marth could still win this because sole Nintendo rep, middle option, ect., but all in all Phoenix looks like the clear favorite. If he doesn't win, I'll be pretty disappointed. Guest’s Analysis - Ctes This is one of the few round 1 matches, in which all three character has a legitimate chance of winning. All three are low mid-carters, and with how the seeding system works fans of them should be thankful that they got placed in a match where they have a chance. I know Board 8 is all in for Phoenix. All three characters have appeared in the character battles before; Phoenix in the past four, Marth in the past three and Nightmare in the 4-way contests, so we have some matches to look into here. Nightmare is probably the weakest of the three. He managed to get to round 2 in both 07 and 08, but the ones he finished ahead of was fodder, and he didn't stand a chance when he was put against actual competition. Since the last competition, Soul Calibur V has come out, but it probably wont do Nightmare any help, as IV didn't seem to help him much in 2008, and that was released right before the contest began. Nightmare might be able to put a good fight, but he's clearly the third place in this match. The real match comes down to Phoenix against Marth. Let's start out by taking a look at how relevant they currently are. So Marth haven't had a main role for quite a while in Japan, but his games had remakes in recent years for American debut. He has Smash Bros support and even though SSB4 has not announced Marth as of yet, the E3 trailer could give him a small boost too, which might matter in a match like this. Also, a new Fire Emblem was released this year. Marth wasn't among the main cast, but was referred to a lot and I'm pretty sure he's available through downloadable content. As for Phoenix, Apollo Justice is not exactly recent anymore, but he has a new game coming up later this year, which might give him some kin of boost, my Marth wins this one since his game is actually out. Okay, so let's look at their previous contest histories. Phoenix only barely beat Bomberman and Crash and lost to Jecht. Jecht proved himself to be quite weak against Ratchet of all characters in the following round. I'll ignore Jecht's good showing on Zelda because Final Fantasy XIII's release that day played in, so losing to Jecht does make you weak. I think Marth should beat every character I just mentioned, except Zelda, fairly easily. Phoenix has the advantage that it's a night match, which will play a role, but during summer break, not nearly enough. Marth was able to take out Kefka and Duke Nukem with easy, character I wouldn't pick Phoenix above, although with some LFF from Lucario he also lost to Duke. No SFF is involved now. We'll finally get to see a Marth that has his games released in the rest of the world in real action, because that Sephiroth match in 2010 isn't giving us anything. Lastly, Nintendo is a much stronger fanbase. They'll get Marth through. So, keeping this short went terrible. To sum things up, I think Board 8 is being too biased with Phoenix. The facts are clear as the day. Marth should win this without much trouble. Marth: 37,5% Phoenix Wright: 33,1% Nightmare: 29,4% Crew Consensus: Marth has some support, but Phoenix is the favorite |
