Man this match sucks. Not in the 'it's boring and predictable' sense but in the 'none of these characters deserve to move on [except chie because she's awesome]' sense.

I guess Draven is seen as the favorite because he's got the high seed and LoL is pretty big on the Internet. However, http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/4779 shows that GameFAQs doesn't really care for League, so I'm not expecting Draven to be worth much (not that it will take much to win here).

I love P4 and while I want to go with Chie here, I doubt she's going to be worth much either. True, P4 probably is the strongest game here, and P4A is fairly recent, but I don't think it's going to be enough. Like most JRPG characters, she won't be nearly as strong as her game, and plus she's not even the main character of that game.

The final character in this match is Jak, who we actually have data on. Yeah, he got killed against Yoshi, but I can buy that he looked worse than usual because of Yoshi's got everything that Jak has in terms of being recognizable and mainstream, and then some. In his matches against Ness and more recently http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/2878, where he didn't have to face any mainstream characters, he...still lost but at least they were close losses. I'd also take all of those characters to win this match easily.

So yeah, while I hate the thought of relying on freakin' Jak to win, I think he's got the best shot here. Neither Draven or Chie are popular, beloved, mainstream characters, and at least Jak will be recognized by most voters. Draven could get rallied by LoL fans, but it would have to be a long 12-hour rally to keep him in it and I just don't see that happening. I wouldn't be surprised if Chie also gets a Tharja-esque rally if things look bad for her, so if she wins or loses, it won't be by much.

Chie's chances have greatly improved since the contest has started, but I'll stick with Jak being the most known to give him the narrow win.

Lopen’s Analysis

First and most important point on the menu is this, since he seems to be the favorite for whatever reason: Draven is going to suck. He's from a game that only like 20% of GameFAQs has ever played, with less having played it since his creation. What's more is he isn't even particularly liked by the fanbase. A lot of League players, and I would even go so far as to guess the majority, actually dislike Draven.

He got here because the fanbase couldn't agree on a character that's actually liked and compromised on the meme character. For the record said meme is actually anti-Draven in some ways but I digress. Rally potential is there but I honestly don't see supporting Draven rousing a lot of furor from the fanbase. Garen, maybe. Not Draven, though.

Now that that's out of the way, Chie or Jak for first? I went with Chie. While she's a supporting character, Persona 4 isn't a slouch on this website. Jak on the other hand has never been particularly strong and he's only getting less relevant (don't bring up PS All Stars I'm beggin ya). Lloyd Irving beat him a few years ago so yeah it's not a high standard. I don't think Chie is going to be quite Lloyd Irving level (though I think Yu > Lloyd), but she should be in the neighborhood and Jak's only getting weaker. Should be a close one, either way.

Leonhart’s Analysis

At first glance, I had Draven winning this match because I thought with the general popularity of League of Legends, he had the highest ceiling. However, upon further reflection, I think it’s more likely that he bombs hard. He’d probably need a rally to do well, and that’s just not going to materialize in a 12-hour night match (somewhere Missingno is nodding in agreement, if it can indeed nod). For as much flack as we’ve given Jak in the past, he’s been on the higher end of the fodder chain. 45% on Ness isn’t a bad showing. Being relatively equal to HK-47 and Lloyd Irving isn’t that bad. Certainly better than I’d expect from the other two. Plus, Jak is easily the most recognizable of the three. I don’t expect much from Chie here either. I know Board 8 loves Persona 4, but I think its character won’t fare so well. Ensemble cast where there isn’t a clear favorite among the fanbase isn’t a recipe for success, especially when you’re a cult (albeit successful by cult standards) RPG.

Man, this match. I was feeling good about that Tharja match, but this one I have no idea. League of Legends is a total unknown quantity here. It may be the most popular game in the world, but not on GameFAQs. Persona 4 has done "okay" in contests so far and Jak has been a giant turd. I think I feel comfortable putting Jak in last place here.

I really don't have any idea which way to go on LoL, though. According to my INSIDE SOURCES Draven isn't particularly liked among the fanbase, but I kind of wonder if he just acts as an LoL proxy here. But that might not even matter because Persona 4 could just straight up be stronger than LoL on this site.

Argh. I don't really have a ton of faith in either Persona 4 or Jak, so I'm going to take a gamble on the unknown and cross my fingers. I don't feel great about it, or even good, but I don't think I'd be comfortable with anything this match.

IF RANDOM LEAGUE OF LEGENDS DUDE CAN WIN THIS MATCH, IT WILL BE BECAUSE THE GAME IS PRETTY POPULAR. I MEAN, RANDOM FIRE EMBLEM CHARACTER JUST SQUEAKED OUT A WIN, SO ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE. BUT I FEEL LIKE YOU COULD PLAY LEAGUE AND NOT KNOW DRAVEN SINCE THAT'S SUCH A HUGE ENSEMBLE CAST. NOT TOO WORRIED ABOUT HIM EXCEPT THAT HE SOMEHOW GOT A 3 SEED AND THAT LEAGUE IS THE BIGGEST GAME IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW. BY A LOT.

I HAVE ZERO RESPECT FOR JAK, A GUY WHO COULDN'T EVEN BEAT LLOYD IRVING AND HK-47. HE'S CONSISTENTLY BEEN A JOKE. BUT HE'S THE ONLY CASUALLY RECOGNIZABLE CHARACTER IN A PACK OF UNKNOWNS. YOU DON'T PICK JAK BECAUSE YOU BELIEVE IN HIM, YOU PICK HIM BECAUSE YOU THINK THE OTHERS SUCK ASS. UNFORTUNATELY FOR HIM, JAK HASN'T HAD A GAME IN SOMETHING LIKE A DECADE AND WAS NEVER POPULAR TO BEGIN WITH. IF CHIE SUCKS THEN JAK IS GOING TO TAKE THIS.

CHIE IS PROBABLY THE ONLY CHARACTER ANYBODY ACTUALLY CARES ABOUT IN THIS MATCH. I'VE HAD HER IN MY BRACKET SINCE DAY 1. CHIE ONLY NEEDS LIKE 12000 VOTES TO WIN A MATCH AND PERSONA 4'S FANBASE IS CERTAINLY CONCENTRATED HERE. I THINK SHE DESTROYS THE OPENING OF THE MATCH AND GALACTIC PUNTS THE CRAP OUT OF THESE TWO BUMS.

KP's Analysis

Anyone could win this stupid/great match, but there's always been a pecking order in my mind.

I think the majority has Draven here, but I've never agreed with that. People are psychologically scared by that 3 Seed but all it means is that he got a nomination rally on some forum. Draven is a bit of a meme in the LoL fanbase, so he's probably the type to get a bunch of nominations and then crash and burn. League of Legends has 100+ playable characters to choose from, and while Draven is popular he's one of many in an ensemble cast and doesn't have an appealing design to those who don't already know him.

Chie is looking good with random JRPG characters doing well so far, but I wonder how well Persona characters will do. Outside of the main character, it's an ensemble cast and not every cares about Chie. She also has a 'boring' design by GameFAQs standards, I think. Looks a little too normal for its tastes.

Meanwhile, everyone knows who Jak is even if they don't care about him and he has some decent results in the past (he'll be weaker now but his competition isn't the best). That's enough for me to pick him here, I guess.

Guest’s Analysis - Kotetsu534

This is one of the most debated matches in round one, and for good reason, since there's little known about two of the three characters.

Of the three, Jak at least has a contest history, having been tripled by Yoshi in 2010 and failing to keep up with HK-47 and Lloyd Irving in 2007, while being doubled by Zero. If anything, he's likely fallen off in the years since then, but he still has recognisability on his side - people will know Jak as a Sony mascot, which many think is more than can be said for Draven or Chie.

Draven is one of over 100 playable characters in League of Legends, one of the most popular video games in the world. But not one of the most popular games on GameFAQs, with 70% of GameFAQs having never touched it, as of July of last year. League is, however, a bigger deal today than it was then, its board is perennially one of the most popular on the site, and it possesses dangerous rally potential from its forums, streams and Reddit. Yet for all that, I find it hard to believe that it's really penetrated the GameFAQs demographic to a great extent, or even amongst those that do play it, there's a huge amount of love for Draven. To be honest, I'm not sure the average reaction to seeing Draven on the homepage for many LoL players might be similar to seeing Jak - recognition, but not with much affection.

Chie is one of the most popular characters in Persona 4, which, while niche, has shown some success on the site's polls in the past and has seen a re-release, an anime and a fighter sequel, as well as strong word-of-mouth since its 2008 release. While it overperformed in GOTD in reaching the last 32, holding 30% against RE4 shows there's a genuine fanbase for it on GameFAQs. I'd expect amongst those that have extensive familiarity with the game Chie will win handily, as she's a character who's easy to like and the art-style in her picture should be recognisable and distinctive. The problem is of course that amongst those who don't recognise her - a majority of voters - she'll do pretty terribly.

Most are leaning towards Draven and Jak beating Chie quite easily and duking it out between themselves, but I'm not so sure. I think Chie can overcome being part of an ensemble cast to galvanise the Persona fans into backing her, and that might be all it takes for the JRPG character to win here. I'll take the upset.

What Happened: Being a Borderlands character did end up helping Tina and almost gave her the win, but the dedication of FE fans rallied to save Tharja. As for the next match, Hero both acted as a proxy for DQ and took advantage of Aeris/Rinoa to take second place easily (yeah Aeris still dominated as expected)

I don't think I'd call this the worst contest ever. There is some bad stuff about this contest, but there's also some good stuff as well. The bad stuff about the contest:

Vote totals - This contest appears to have nearly identical vote totals to Rivalry Rumble, despite a 20% drop in non-contest vote totals since the end of 2011.

Turbofodder - We've always had turbofodder in every contest, but it's much worse in this contest with the expanded field this year.

LFF - A common complaint for why 4-ways sucks and we'll be seeing LFF again for 3-ways.


The good stuff about the contest so far:

Unpredictability - Tons of newcomers with no previous knowledge of their trends or their strength. While we ultimately expect Link to win it all, it's the newcomers that make the contests exciting to watch.

Close matches and upsets - We've already had one close match in Tharja > Tiny Tina after less than 3 days into the contest. We only had 3 matches in Rivalry Rumble that could qualify as a close match - Sora/Dante, Squall/Sora, and Trainers/Cloud. This contest is almost certainly going to have other close matches and upsets just because we know nothing about a lot of these characters.
