Snake vs Crono Wow, what a cool matchup of Noble Niners here in Round One! The only place it would have been even more neat to see Crono would have been ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE BRACKET. You hear me Bacon? YOU HEAR ME!? Okay, okay give me a second to compose myself... Horrifyingly poor bracket placement aside, it should still be kind of interesting to see where this percentage ends up. MGS looked great in beating up on Tidus, while Chrono Trigger has already disappointed us once, in a day match, against Metal Gear Solid. Plus Rivalries Matter, and Lavos as the "rival" of anything is quite a stretch. Soooooo Snake in a laugher, right? I'm not so sure about that. I refuse to believe CT has become as weak on this site as that Frog result would lead us to believe; maybe him vs Magus just isn't as fondly remembered as we expected? Also Crono flat out dominates this match pic... I mean it's not even fair! Unfortunately Crono would probably need about 5 more advantages that large to make a real match of this. Ah well, at least Snake's big win will help fuel that Snake > Cloud bandwagon. Alllll aboooooooooard! Ngamer64 | Posted 11/16/2011 4:17:48 AM | message detail | quote Snake - 59.17% Oddly enough, that's the same percentage that Snake got on Squall back in 2010. Snake would normally get about 59% on Crono if you assume that Crono = Squall. But considering this is a different contest format, Snake will get above 59% because Crono's rivalry sucks while Snake has a good rivalry here. Also, Liquid Snake > Lavos. (2) Solid Snake/Liquid Snake vs. (7) Crono/Lavos Weird match here - every so often the vote-ins throw a strong entrant into an elite entrant's path right at the start, and this is one such occasion. Trying to get a proper read on Crono himself isn't really possible - 2010 is obviously a waste, and the previous two contests in '08 and '07 were 4-ways. In both of them he was right around Vincent's level, but I think it's fair to suggest that CT might have continued to decline since then. Bear in mind we've already seen Frog/Magus limp to 56% against Raiden/Vamp. Crono/Lavos did win their vote-in poll, but Sub-Zero/Scorpion crushed Leon/Ada much worse than they did and I wouldn't expect Solid/Liquid to struggle with them. The obvious reason for the under-performance is that Lavos is just about worthless, both as a single entrant and as a rival. If this was Solid Snake vs. Crono straight up, the high 50s would be expected, but with the rivalry disadvantage Crono has here, and with CT having already under-performed in a match against MGS, I think something in the low-mid 60s is achievable. The Snakes probably need to get there if they want to stand any chance against Cloud/Sephiroth. Solid Snake vs. Liquid Snake with 63% of the vote. --- Praise the Black Turtle, Game of the Decade Guru Champ. (Well, I never promised creativity, did I?!) |
West Division: Round 1 - Match 28 – (2) Solid Snake/Liquid Snake vs. (7) Crono/Lavos Moltar’s Analysis Snake/Liquid Dominant and recessive genes, they’ve got this in the bag. Crono/Lavos They’ve got...sprites....oh wait no they don’t they’re screwed So earlier I think I said that Big Boss/The Boss were the strongest 7-seeds. ‘whoops’ Still, they’ll be the only 7 seeds to win a match, because even though this pair of Crono/Lavos is strong, they got stuck with a 2-seed that is strong enough to beat them. Snake > Crono, Liquid > Lavos (they actually had a match before [I just remembered this]), MGS has looked good so far in this contest, while CT has not. Also, on top of all of that, Snake/Liquid is a very loved and very respected rivalry, while Crono vs. Lavos just can’t compare..at all...since it’s not even a real rivalry. A Snake vs. Crono match probably wouldn’t be too close these days, and the MGS pair should look a bit stronger thanks to the format. I don’t think CT fans will just abandon Crono here though, so I can’t see this getting too ugly. Therefore... Moltar’s Bracket: Snake/Liquid Moltar’s Prediction: Snake/Liquid - 61% Lopen’s Analysis Twin Snakes vs Crono and a thousand ton mass of dead weight. Lavos gives TOO BIG a whole new meaning-- Ridley ain't got nothin on this. Seriously. Crono/Lavos isn't a rivalry in any sense of the word, and even forgetting for a second that Frog vs Magus flopped really bad (second tier MGS rivalry vs second tier CT rivalry huh I guess Bacon was being cute) I wouldn't have expected this one to be close. After that match? I don't think anyone will. Beatdown for Snakes here that no doubt (wrongly) has people hyping Snakes > FF7 guys. Lopen's prediction: GENES with 70.02% Leon’s Analysis This one should be interesting, at least in terms of the final margin. Snake probably gets 55-57% on Crono, who would blow out Liquid, who would beat Lavos. It’s a pretty interesting dynamic, seeing two Noble Niners facing off. The stronger character has a legit rival, while the other has a parasitic monster. We might see a flash of “rivalries matter” here if Solid/Liquid just obliterate Crono/Lavos here. We already saw Raiden/Vamp make Frog/Magus look bad, and I feel like Solid/Liquid will do the same here. For as much flack as MGS games received during GOTD, they’ve all looked pretty solid (no pun intended) in this contest. Some people are murmuring at the possibility of Solid/Liquid beating Cloud/Sephiroth. They’d have to go pretty high before I start worrying about that, but we’ll see. This could get pretty ugly though. Leonhart’s Prediction: Solid Snake vs. Liquid Snake with 67.50% Kleenex’s Analysis How the mighty have fallen. Once upon a time, Crono could stand toe-to-toe with Mario and was a top 5 character on this site. Now he loses to glitches and can't even get into the main draw of a bracket. Sure, that may be because he doesn't have any kind of real rival, but whatever. Anyway, I'm hoping that Crono can hold his own in this match. He certainly won't win, but god willing he'll put up a good fight; lest we be forced to listen to weeks worth of Snake > Cloud nonsense again. Kleenex's Prediction: Snake vs. Snake vs. SNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE with 57.98% |
Applekidjosh’s Analysis Solid Snake is the man in these contests. The guy makes waves. Liquid's kind of a nobody but the name synergy will help out a bit, I think. I have Solid Snake going far in this contest. Crono, though? Poor, poor Crono. One advantage Crono has is the lower vote totals, I think. The more hardcore dedicated nerds that will still frequent this site have to be the same ones that have fond memories of Chrono Trigger, right? I mean just look at the FF6 overperformance to see they've got that classic love thing going. However... Crono vs Lavos IS NOT A FREAKING RIVALRY! I mean not at all! It's essentially the same situation as Ness vs Giygas - silent protagonist vs big bad guy that plays a minimal part in the plot aside from the part where you fight him! This is a little different in that at least Ness should've been up against Pokey; I have no idea who Crono should be up against. The guy just isn't an interesting character! and that's a big freaking problem when he's going up against the master of being an interesting character, Solid Snake! I don't often predict things over great Square games, but when I do, I predict Solid Snake vs Liquid Snake with 65.00% Dante’s Analysis If this were just Snake vs Crono, I’d be amazed we got this in the first round. Admittedly, Crono has gotten way weaker over the years and I’d still take Snake to win – but it’d still be “whoa” for a round one matchup. But with the addition of the rivalrys, it turns this from an assured snake victory to a stomp since really, who cares about Lavos? Winner - The Snakes – 71.01% Guest’s Analysis - Black Turtle Solid Snake vs. Liquid Snake This pairing reminds me I need to play Twin Snakes before I dive into the MGS HD Collection Crono vs. Lavos Our first noble nine entrant to ever require vote-ins to make a contest Analysis Some crazy seeding, and a piss-poor rivalry results in a Noble Nine clash in the first round. Unfortunately, there isn't much to talk about here. MGS has been impressing this contest (Big Boss/The Boss dominating their match, Raiden/Vamp beating Yuna/Seymour and making Frog/Magus look like crap) while Crono really has nothing going for him here. The fact that Rivalries Matter™ implies this match could get ugly. Solid/Liquid is a fantastic rivalry, that stretches across multiple games. Lavos is not a good rival for Crono, as he's more or less minding his own business consuming the planet when Crono & company attack him. A lot of people are putting the Snakes at around 60%, but I have a feeling that we might see a doubling, if not more here. I would like to mention that this match is a perfect example of how Sailor Bacon really dropped the ball with the way this bracket is layed out. The Guru cookie is perfect right now, and could potentially finish perfect as we've already passed most of the debated matches (only Frog/Alucard has the potential to screw that up IMO). Think of how much better this bracket would have been even if bacon just switched Crono with Leon/Ada. I'm sure we could put together a mockup of the bracket with way more debatable matches, even without changing the seedings. Oh well, I'm already out of this contest thanks to Phoenix and Alucard. (1) Squall Leonhart/Seifer Almasy vs. (8) Laharl/Mid-Boss Another obvious blowout comes along. The only question is how big it will be. Squall has never tripled anyone apart from pre-UC2 Nathan Drake, and that includes such stalwarts as CATS and Geno. Laharl is poor fodder, but still managed to win a match and hold 32% against Sora in 2010. His rivalry also made it through the vote-in poll, even if it did lose to Banjo/Gruntilda and Yuna/Seymour. Night match and possible some fanbase overlap should help Squall/Seifer into the mid 70s here, at least. Well you know what they say: Even Luster is right twice a day. --- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love! |
From: Lopen | #176 You are referring to the common idiom, "Even a broken clock is right twice a day." This is referring to the fact that while a clock's hands aren't moving, real time will eventually pass through the broken time indicated by the clock. This happens twice per day because we tend to use 12 hour clocks for our 24 hour day. However, a person cannot be right about something in the same manner as a clock. The reason the idiom works is the clock does nothing yet external forces take care of everything - in your example, Luster is actually doing work and is still sometimes correct. That is why your comparison is flawed. --- http://myanimelist.net/profile/applekidjosh <Die the death>! <Sentence to death>! <Great equalizer is the death>!! |
Strange
that Snake's percentage against Squall is nearly identical to what he
has against Crono/Lavos. Even though this is a day match, while
Snake/Squall was a night match. I'd expect Crono to be slightly above
Squall, but still close enough that it could be a toss-up with how Crono
has declined the past few years. transcience | Posted 11/16/2011 7:05:26 PM | message detail | quote the only other person to draw that comparison was Luster. just sayin' I only brought that up after the match had started. I did go a little high on my Oracle prediction, but that was based on the rivalry factor. I assumed Snake was going to benefit from the rivalry factor, and Crono would be hurt by a bad rivalry. But I guess if x-stats project the MK ninjas to beat Snake/Liquid, that does help support the idea of Ryu/Ken > Samus/Ridley since we widely assume that Samus is just below Snake today. --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but not as cool as BlAcK TuRtLe, Guru Champ! |

Squall vs Laharl This might very well be the worst matchup in the whole bracket. There's others that will draw fewer votes or feature weaker characters or where both teams are dead in the water next round so it doesn't matter, but I'm sticking to my guns and calling this awful. I guess I should cut Laharl a little slack, since he's gone from getting 60'd by Vyse to beating Neku easily and being a favorite against Vyse if they had a rematch (probably?). Still though, whatever usefulness he brings to the table is wasted in an SFFfest against a much more popular fellow Playstation RPG hero. Especially since we saw this happen just last year when Sora hung 68% on him. Another reason this is so bad is that there's not a huge range for the final percentage to fall. You take that 68, account for Squall being a little ahead of Sora, factor in Squall having the better rivalry, add a touch of "Final Fantasy vs PS RPG Factor" since we're all still stunned by Kefka's final number, maybe add in just a pinch for Squall getting to use his strong overnight vote, and you're left with Squall - 74.39% --- thengamer.com/guru thengamer.com/xstats board8.wikia.com You should search for The Show, the cool podcast featuring Guru Champ Black Turtle! |

Northwest Division: Round 1 - Match 29 – (1) Squall/Seifer vs. (8) Laharl/Mid-Boss Moltar’s Analysis Squall/Seifer How did these guys get a 1-seed? darn you leon Laharl/Mid-Boss How did these guys even get in the bracket? darn you vote-ins Boring and easy match. Sora killed Laharl last year and Sora sucks at blowing out opponents. Squall should do significantly better as we’ve seen time and time again (and definitely not for the last time) that Squall beats Sora easily. Seifer who cares Mid-Boss who cares rivalry who cares Moltar’s Bracket: Squall/Seifer Moltar’s Prediction: Squall/Seifer - 76% Lopen’s Analysis I dunno where to place this one. I don't think Squall vs Seifer is on the top tier of rivalries given that it's not a big focus of the game, but it is probably on the second tier. But the Disgaea fanbase tends to like Laharl vs Midboss so it probably doesn't fare too poorly either-- might even get a boost. BUT it's a night match which probably favors Laharl. Also don't really think Seifer adds too much to this-- guy couldn't get into a contest with rally help like 5 times so how many people care about him really. So what all this means is I put Squall vs Laharl into lol X-Stats for 2010 (why are these values so high?!) and then arbitrarily remove points from Squall because Laharl's rivalry is better. I mean half of the good stuff in Squall vs Seifer happens after Squall's dead anyway. HEHEH Lopen's prediction: Squall vs Seifer with 68.23% Leon’s Analysis I’ve been waiting for the day that FFVIII gets a second rep for years upon years, and now the day has finally come. We won’t have an exact idea of how good Seifer is here, but if this team does well, it will give some justification to get more reps in 1-on-1 contests, at least. This SHOULD be an easy win, but I’m going to avoid going too high so I don’t ultimately get disappointed when they go lower. The 2010 X-Stats predict a 72% win for Squall vs. Laharl, and this match probably won’t be too far off from that, with FFVIII’s fantastic night vote. FF rivalries haven’t been doing that great so far, but we’ll see. Leonhart’s Prediction: Squall Leonhart vs. Seifer Almasy with 74.15% |
Kleenex’s Analysis How does Laharl keep getting into these things? I guess having your game released 20 times on different platforms gives you some exposure (perhaps this is why Cecil has been doing so well lately?!) and in turn, votes. Regardless, Squall is quite possibly the #10 character - or even higher - and Seifer is a guy who has had a lot of trouble getting into these things despite decent support. Both of which are better than Laharl or Midboss. This one could get pretty ugly, but I guess Laharl has enough of a cult fanbase to avoid a complete embarrassment. Kleenex's Prediction: Squall vs. Seifer with 73.76% Applekidjosh’s Analysis Squall is the man. Great character and a great rival here. I'm so glad he didn't get something ridiculous like "Squall vs Ultimecia" and actually got his REAL RIVALRY THANKS BACON. It's interesting that he's going up against Laharl vs Midboss because their rivalry has really died down lately. It was cool enough in Disgaea 1, but in Laharl's appearances in Disgaea 2, 3, and 4, his rival has always been whoever was trying to be main character at the time. After all is said and done, Adell, Mao, and Valvatorez are a whole lot cooler than Mid-Boss, too! So this match. Obvious Squall win. Honestly this is Squall's division to lose, so I hope he really comes out swinging here and shows why Final Fantasy 8 is a top tier game. (4) Siegfried/Nightmare vs. (5) Ramza/Delita A dodgy mid-seed match, ugh. Siegfried has made one contest and looked about as strong as Ramza in it - compare his % on Riku vs. Ramza's last year. Nightmare looks to be a tier above them, given both his higher % on Riku and holding up decently against against Snake and Samus (both in 4-ways, unfortunately). More importantly, fighting game rivalries have looked strong so far (ignore Dan/Sagat!), while the only FF that's done better than expectations are SNES characters that were in Dissidia. Nightmare vs Ramza Everyone's taking Nightmare in their Battle picks and slotting him in for 56-57% in their Oracles, and honestly I'm not sure where that confidence is coming from. SC1 getting plastered by 12% versus StarCraft? SC2's managing only 37% on Oblivion? The series barely edging Tekken for favorite 3D fighter? I guess you could make an argument that fighting game rivalries have done well this season, but after that Dan/Sagat debacle I'm thinking maybe Ryu and Sub-Zero are the exception rather than the rule... Now granted, I'm one of the 66% of this board who went with the SC duo in my bracket, but I've always looked at this as the most fodderific and coin-flippy matchup of the whole season, one I'd always intended to Bank on if I had a streak going.
