Applekidjosh’s Analysis I love this match. Well let me be clear, I'm between neutral and loathing of all the characters in the match, but I love what this match represents. MEDIOCRITY WOOO Second tier Nintendo and Second tier Square teamed up with their Third tier counterparts? This is just glorious. The only problem is nobody cares about Yuna anymore, and even if every person who actually cares enough about the prequel to FFX-2 to remember who Seymour is shows up to vote it won't be enough to beat the "Oh hey it's Fox I don't hate that guy I guess I'll vote for him" vote! And none of it matters at all cause the winner gets fed to the unstoppable Street Fighter force next round anyway! AKJ predix Fox and (I refuse to admit there's anybody else in this team with 63.33% Hmm, I feel like I've read something similar before. (1) Samus/Ridley vs. (8) The Kid/The Guy A lot of people expect this to be a blowout of truly massive proportions, but I'm not so sure. I think GameFAQs knows its games better than we tend to think - see Mother 3 being able to avoid a doubling against DMC3. It wouldn't surprise me if the playrate for I Wanna Be The Guy was surprisingly decent, especially since it's freeware. In the vote-in poll The Kid/The Guy beat Jim/Queen and came within 3% of Yuna/Seymour. Some have suggested that it got there due to joke votes, but I don't buy that - I don't think the names are funny enough to draw those votes if The Great Mighty Poo and Slug-for-a-Butt weren't able to capitalise on theirs 1v1. No, I think The Kid/The Guy is about as strong as Jim/Queen and Laharl/Mid-Boss. If that's true then they should be worth about as much on Mario/Bowser as Jim/Queen - 14.64%. So far the three entries to have broken 80% are Mario/Bowser, X/Zero and Ryu/Ken, and the two who I think could perhaps have done so with weaker opponents are Sub-Zero/Scorpion and Red/Blue. All of them, I'd suggest, have some serious rivalry factor going on. Samus/Ridley aren't terrible in that department, but I expect them to be nearer to Sonic/Robotnik than X/Zero and Ryu/Ken. If The Kid/The Guy turn out to be complete and utter trash, worse than anything we've seen thus far, Samus/Ridley will go well into the 80s. But I don't think they are. I
just feel that there's simply no way Kid/Guy are near Ratchet/Nefarious
in strength, while I still believe Samus/Ridley should be similar to
Ryu/Ken. Sure the bounty hunter doesn't have as much rivalry factor
going for her, but she's much stronger than Ryu in raw strength. Putting
those together, I think Samus/Ridley should manage a similar percentage
as what Ryu/Ken just got, possibly slightly higher. Samus also has a history of blowing out fodder, so I like her odds for scoring an 80+ blowout. --- http://images.wikia.com/finalfantasy/images/0/0e/Ffx-bahamut.jpg Support Bahamut if we ever get another real contest. |
If Samus can't pull an 85-15 blowout, I'd have to say Ryu/Ken has it in the bag. Well, you know, assuming they get past the trainers (I'm pretty sure they will, but I didn't feel like sparking another 6 pages of Red/Blue arguments). --- PSN - Aevio "I'm on a Goomba." - BlackMageJawa |
I'm
not sure 85% is realistic or even necessary. You can LOL at the
vote-ins all you want, but Kid/Guy did better than EWJ/QSfaB, and
Mario/Bowser only barely managed to get 85% on the weaker pair. If you
think Samus/Ridley needs 85%, you'd better take Ryu/Ken (or the
trainers) over Mario/Bowser as well, as the vote-ins combined with their
first match indicate they would get ~85% on Kid/Guy as well. --- http://images.wikia.com/finalfantasy/images/0/0e/Ffx-bahamut.jpg Support Bahamut if we ever get another real contest. |

But
she's gotta carry Ridley's big ass this time. Ya know what, the rivalry
most like Samus/Ridley is actually Jill/Nemesis. Not rivals so much as
violent enemies, the antagonist chases the player, pops in out of

Jill/Nemmy was disappoint. So take that for what you will. --- Yoblazer: http://i43.tinypic.com/25z1non.jpg Watch and you'll see... someday I'll be... part of your world! |

It'd be like Jill/Nemesis if it was made by another company. but this is a Nintendo game. nothin' to worry about, at least not yet. remember, a vote against Samus is a vote for a freeware indie game that's known for being masochistic. Samus could hit 90% here. (and it wouldn't say a thing about her path) --- add the c and back away iphonesience |
I...
don't know about that. Even Samus isn't invincible. Remember Nidoran?
I'll wait for the match picture, but Kid/Guy already have a huge
contrast with their names, and if they are just these two dweeby looking
sprite guys against SAMUS AND RIDLEY DEATHFIGHTDEATH, then there's even
more contrast. The spread for Samus is like 82%; I'm not sure if she
can reach that. --- Yoblazer: http://i32.tinypic.com/zlf1w7.gif Watch and you'll see... someday I'll be... part of your world! |
The
Kid/The Guy impressed me by actually getting into this contest at all
because they had to go through the vote-ins to do it. Samus/Ridley
probably quadruples, but Kid/Guy could be decently strong. They've got a

Southeast Division: Round 1 - Match 13 – (1) Samus/Ridley vs. (8) The Kid/The Guy Moltar’s Analysis Samus/Ridley Great pairing The Kid/The Guy I’m surprised this team got in Seriously, didn’t think that many people played IWBTG. Unfortunately for Kid/Guy, it has to face a very good and very strong rivalry in Samus/Ridley. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was one of, if not, the biggest blowout of the contest. Moltar’s Bracket: Samus/Ridley Moltar’s Prediction: Samus/Ridley - 85% Lopen’s Analysis I'm not thinkin Samus/Ridley do too great this contest. It's a rivalry that centers around Samus walkin around and a giant dinosaur thing breaking through a wall and being like “yo let's fight” but by “yo let's fight” I mean “KEAYAHGHAGH.” It's possible that Nintendo + repetition + a bit more fleshing out of the rivalry makes them worth something, but I'm not even sure they get out of the division. That being said, the opposition is The Kid vs The Guy. Whatever this is. Well I know what it is sorta but average voter probably doesn't. That being said they got 9% against a bajillion rivalries in the qualifier, and outdid Jim/Butt who got 15% against Mario/Bowser which is no doubt stronger, so they probably won't get destroyed too badly. And joke votes, maybe? Bettin on a Samus/Ridley disappointing. Ridley being TOO BIG just means Samus has to carry a lot of weight. Lopen's prediction: Samus/Ridley with 79.89% Leon’s Analysis This match is about as straightforward as it gets. Samus/Ridley is going to win, and they’re going to win big. The only real issue is how high Samus/Ridley need to go in order to re-establish some wavering confidence in the pair after how impressive the Trainers and the Fighters were in their matches. A lot of people think that Samus/Ridley will suffer due to the rivalry factor, but I don’t think this match will tell us too much about them. The main reason why is that The Kid/The Guy is a total unknown as far as rivalries go. They could easily finish as the weakest duo in the contest just due to sheer obscurity, but they could also overperform due to a funny name and a standout match pic. I’m not really going to take too much from this match one way or the other unless Samus/Ridley do really bad (like, less than a tripling would be really bad, in my opinion). Leonhart’s Prediction: Samus Aran vs. Ridley with 81.18% |
Kleenex’s Analysis I'm busy fiddling with my computer tonight in preparation for SKYRIM, so I don't have much time to write anything today. Not that there's much to write anyway - Samus wins. This could be the blowout of the contest, who knows. SKYRIM. Kleenex's Prediction: Samus vs. Ridley with 86.88% Applekidjosh’s Analysis I'm not even going to do these lamers the dignity of googling their names to see what game they're from. They're trash being fed to kawaii samus-chan. Insert some joke about Ridley being too big. This match literally needs no analysis. AKJ predix Samus vs Ridley with 84.00% Dante’s Analysis ….Yeah, I can’t see many people legitimately voting for The Kid and The Guy. Even people who played the game would only be doing it for joke votes, and don’t even try to tell me they somehow have a better rivalry than Samus and Ridley. Long story short, Samus and Ridley are going to walk straight into round 2, and they might not even notice they had a round 1 match. Winner - Samus/Ridley – 82.46% Guest’s Analysis - Menji76 I still have little idea where The Kid and Guy come from. This game apparently has a decent playrate to get into the vote-ins and beat out the likes of Marcus Fenix. Still no match picture but I can’t imagine anything great to come out of two ugly sprites. There isn’t a chance of an upset here so it’s really a matter of how much Samus/Ridley win by. The biggest surprises to me this contest are how much rivalries actually matter and that just about every match has been lopsided. The Kid and Guy may have a sizeable fanbase as we’ve seen but I still don’t see them getting any more than 20% of the vote. We haven’t seen Slug/Poo receive any boost from joke votes so I don’t see anything different happening here. Samus vs The Kid Three cheers to Ryu/Ken turning even THIS into a matchup worth keeping an eye on! The most synergistic pair in the bracket just hung a jaw-dropping 81.63% on Ratchet, so if Samus wants to maintain her "easy favorite" status in that Elite Eight poll she'll pretty much need to cover today's line, which kao set at 82.50%. She's nostalgic, she's iconic, she's Nintendo, she's maybe the greatest blowout machine left on this website now that Link/Cloud get anti-favorite votes... and yet I'm not entirely convinced she can do it! It's a feeling which has zero to do with Samus and 100% to do with Ridley. You can count on Ridley to be the most awesome boss fight in any Metroid, but it's pretty clear that voters this year are favoring "friendly rivals" antagonists like Scorpion and Zero and Ken over these villains without much character or plot significance. Our bounty hunter's other problem is that she's always been sooooooo far ahead of her Game/Series ever since 2002 that she obviously must pull a good portion of her strength from her cool character design and Smash appearances. That's all well and good in a Character Battle, but voters have different priorities here in the RIVALRY RUMBLE- which is especially bad news since Ridley didn't make it into Brawl, a point which might have assisted the Wolf/Fox team yesterday. The counterargument is clearly "no one has heard of The Kid!', but it looked respectable enough in the vote in and has an eye-catching picture and funny character names. All things considered, I really see Samus pulling a mini-Sonic on us here and having trouble pushing this result out beyond the lower 80s. (PS - Night Vote shouldn't be a real factor. It was a huge deal for Prime in GotD, but Samus is about the most consistent character we've ever seen, and The Kid was also surprisingly level across NA/EU/AS in that vote in poll.) Kefka vs Vyse There's something that just feels SO WRONG about picking Kefka to win easily. Clearly he's still feeling the effects of that pathetic 50% showing versus Pac-Man from way back, but it's hard to blame us considering he also failed to reach 64% on Mithos. Mithos. Terra's pretty much in the same boat: pulls out close wins in debated matches (Darth Revan), but can't lay the wood to terrible opponents (never sniffed 60% vs Kerrigan). So why is everyone and their mother going with percentages of 65 and up in this one? Because Rivalry Matters©, of course! I looked up this "Galcian" fellow just now and it sounds like exactly the kind of pairing that's doomed to fail in this bracket... he's more pulling the strings in the background, at least through the early portion of the game, instead of being an active semi-antagonistic "friendly rival" in the successful Zero/Ken/Magus vein. The other issue is that Vyse is awful these days- as in I looked over his recent showings and couldn't believe we used to consider this chump the Fodder Line! 20% on Cloud is one thing; Tifa dropping 78% on you and getting doubled by Nightmare is quite another. In other words, Kefka's going to take this match without breaking a sweat, but I still say folks are going a little overboard with these high 60 preds. The Arcadia fanbase isn't huge, but it's devoted enough, and I also think it's a win for you anytime you can avoid running into Final Fantasy 6-10 in a Night Match. So I'll stick with a more conservative Kefka - 63.81% --- thengamer.com/guru thengamer.com/xstats board8.wikia.com You should search for The Show, the cool podcast featuring Guru Champ Black Turtle! |

(4) Terra/Kefka vs. (5) Vyse/Galcian The real fodder in this contest is probably in the 4-6 seeds who avoided a vote in. Not all of them are bad, but some of them look to me like they wouldn't have came close to surviving the votes (check out how Sol Badguy did in the vote-in he made for CBVIII to see what I mean). I say this because Vyse/Galcian is most likely terrible. Skies won a match last contest, but still lost 62/38 to Mass Effect at night. In 03 and 04 Vyse was a reasonable pick for the fodder line, but since then his performances have amounted to 22% on Tifa, 15% on Solid Snake, and coming 9th in 12-way vote-in, behind such strong competition as Isaac Clarke and Kerrigan. Galcian doesn't have much to work with, and he doesn't have much to bring. Terra/Kefka might not be the greatest rivalry ever, but they're from FFVI, and with the Dissidia boost in effect last contest they put up probably their best performances ever: 35.5% on Squall and 38.3% on Bowser (and at a time disadvantage in both). They'll win with ease here. But how big? Probably somewhere in the high 60s - if Kefka can put 60% on Arthas, he can put a good deal more than that on Vyse, and Terra adds more to the team than does Galcian. Yet, it's hard to see Vyse/Galcian getting held much below a doubling. Terra/Kefka with 69.5% of the vote. --- Praise the Black Turtle, Game of the Decade Guru Champ. Southeast Division: Round 1 - Match 14 – (4) Terra/Kefka vs. (5) Vyse/Galacian Moltar’s Analysis Terra/Kefka This is a terrable pair Vyse/Galacian Here’s some advyse abou-god this is awful Vyse used to be a fodder line, now he can’t even meet those standards. Not only that, but Vyse is also the strong character of his team...yeah it’s that bad. Terra and Kefka both looked great (well they surpassed the low expectations of them flopping so that’s good enough) last time we saw them, and it’s a decent hero/villain rivalry (I think?), so they should win this match without any problem. For some reason I’m expecting a nasty performance from them. Moltar’s Bracket: Terra/Kefka Moltar’s Prediction: Terra/Kefka - 68% Lopen’s Analysis Vyse vs Galcian should probably win this. … what? I mean, on principle, they probably deserve it more, cause Terra/Kefka isn't a very good rivalry. Anyone/Kefka isn't very good since it's more Kefka vs the party as a whole than anything-- Terra just makes it worse. Vyse may have beat Laharl years ago, and may have even been a fodder line, but now he lies dead buried well beneath the fodder line he built. I don't think Terra/Kefka score a blowout, but they could in theory, just cause Vyse is that bad, but I think among people who know both Vyse/Galcian wins most of the vote, meaning it doesn't go too low. Lopen's prediction: Terra vs Kefka with 64.34% Leon’s Analysis Hey, look, it’s FFVI in a day match. Terra/Kefka could be ripe for an update if not for the fact that they’re facing Vyse/Galcian. I’m just glad Vyse/Galcian made the contest at all, one because I’m a huge Skies of Arcadia fanboy, and two because this was DetroitDJ’s nomination of choice to get into the contest, so it was good that we could get that done for him. There’s not much to say about this one. Skies of Arcadia did surprisingly well (in my opinion) in Game of the Decade against Mass Effect, but Vyse has been really, really bad since 2005. This guy used to be our standard for fodder, but no longer. There’s some rumbling that Terra/Kefka will do poorly because it’s not really considered a good rivalry, but it doesn’t really matter for the purposes of this contest. They have one match they can’t lose, followed by a match they can’t win. Oh well. Applekidjosh’s Analysis This is great. Finally a match between two RPG casts without any gross Nintendofaqs bias. That means it's gonna be a close and exciting match! hahaha I crack myself up. Remember back in the day when we had a Vyse Fodder Line? It's never good for your contest strength when the line between "absolutely awful" and "could possibly do okay against bad people" is you. Meanwhile, Terra has fans for some reason and Kefka, despite being a crappy Sephiroth ripoff, is somehow popular. I don't think they have much of a good "rivalry" going on, but I'd easily take both Terra and Kefka individually over Vyse. That other dude with Vyse is a non-factor since I don't know who he is. Who am I? I'm the guy who, like most gamefaqs voters, never played Skies of Arcadia. So to put a long story short, this isn't going to be a very exciting match. And the winner gets fed to a monster. Long live Nintendofaqs? AKJ predix Terra vs Kefka with 58.88% Dante’s Analysis Okay, I don’t have a huge background with FF6 – I played it for a few hours, then got bored and stopped. That is more than I can say for Skies of Arcadia, which I don’t think I’ve ever even seen a copy of. So basically, I have absolutely no idea how rivalryfear will play into this match, and I also have no idea how close it’ll be. I’ll bet on Terra/Kefka with FFfear, but I wouldn’t be terribly surprised if I were dead wrong. I just know nothing about a single one of these damned characters. Winner - Terra/Kefka – 57.69% Guest’s Analysis - GrapefruitKing Well, we’ve seen old Square twice so far in this contest, and twice it has exceeded expectations. At least MY expectations. Terra/Kefka should easily be the strongest pre-FF7 FF rivalry, even though I expect several people to whine that Terra shouldn’t be in there, not a real rivalry, she’s not the main character, yadda yadda yadda. WELL SHE’S THE BEST WE’VE GOT Anyway, both Terra and Kefka looked realllll good in their last contest, as Terra somehow dodged SFF against Squall and put up a very respectable performance, while Kefka crushed Arthas and looked fine against a pretty impressive Bowser. Vyse, on the other hand.... has never, ever looked good in a contest match. Not even once. The only match he actually won was against Laharl back when he was even more niche than he is today. Vyse almost finished behind Rayman in a fourway match. Ray. Frickin. Man. As for Galacian... Wait, I thought Ramirez was Skies of Arcadia’s villain? He’s the one that was in the Villains bracket, right? Right. In a match against Sephiroth in which... Uh.. Well at least he did better on Seph than Sly Cooper did. I’m guessing Galcian is of equal strength. I dunno. I’ve never played Skies. So Esper Girl/Creepy Clown win easily here, but I’m thinking they’re not getting the doubling. Skies actually looked pretty decent in Game of the Decade, despite its characters constantly sucking. Also people will be scared to death at Kefka’s pic and feel reassured by voting for the other option.
