Donkey Kong vs Ezio Kirby/Jill was a cool idea in theory, but I've always thought that this one would be our first Instant Classic of 2011. Certainly I'm partially biased by DK's rich history in these Contests (Aya, Duck Hunt, Vercetti, Master Chief... has anyone ever provided us with more entertainment at their own expense? well, I guess maybe MC himself!). But also, the stats back my bias all the way: DK/Altair/Ezio finished pretty much dead even last year, which is further validated by coming directly through Vivi. The slightest advantage could tip this result in someone's favor, so let's go through the factors one by one. * Night Vote Factor - shouldn't be much of a difference-maker, as DK starts strong and don't get a huge Smash-driven ASV like some others * Casual Voter Factor - DKC Returns was well-received on this site, and even though Ezio has a big budget release on the way, he got unlucky with the timing... Revelations still won't hit store shelves for 10 more days, potentially costing him thousands of AC fans who will be voting next round * Pic Factor - AC characters always look cool in match pics, but I think DK's got the upper hand here. K. Rool's pirate ship from DKC1 is the perfect place to bring back warm nostalgic feelings for this rivalry. speaking of which, * SmarterVoterFAQs Factor - it's no Mario/Bowser, but I still think this is DK's biggest advantage, given that every AC fan I've spoken to says that Rodrigo is "kind of not a big deal". To summarize, it would take a flat out choke job for DK to lose this match. And what are the chances of THAT happening? Sub-Zero vs Leon Wow, has my opinion on this match ever changed in a hurry! A few days back I'd have talked about how Leon consistently finishing Top 30 in the stats since 2005 is no fluke, how Ada's one of the better #2s in this bracket and at least won't drag him down, how the ninjas being such overwhelming favorites on this board (they have 205 out of 217 Guru brackets behind them) could potentially be one of our biggest blunders. But then? SmartVoterFAQs happened! Or maybe it's NostalgiaFAQs? In any case, Mario and then MMX and now Donkey Kong have shattered my expectations- at this point I don't see how anyone could be betting against Subby/Scorp or Ryu/Ken or any other pairing that screams "iconic" or "90s" or "synergy". Especially not after the way Resident Evil has already dropped the ball big time in that poll against Kirby. Actually, Jill's comeback there after a rough first hour was pretty respectable... but unfortunately they'll be no Europe/Asia fueled Night Vote to bail out Leon's percentage in this one! (2) Sub-Zero/Scorpion vs. (7) Leon Kennedy/Ada Wong This was a match pre-contest where I went with the concensus because my bracket was based around rivalries mattering, but was surprised to see so few taking Leon/Ada. Ada is weak, but not horrible fodder, and Leon is the strongest of the four - even with his horrible picture, he held 43% on Ryu, while Sub-Zero, the stronger of the two ninjas, hovers around 40% on Auron. In the vote in Leon/Ada comfortably came second, not too far from Crono/Lavos. But since then, the contest has actually started, and rivalries that are more established and genuine, have encountered no problems at all (unless you think Sonic/Robotnik's 73% was a bad result, which I expect it's not), while entries like Falcon/Shadow and Ezio/Rodrigo that are dependent on one character have been awful. I also take account of Sub-Zero/Scorpion holding a second seed without (as far as I can remember) a significant board rally, which indicates that this is what the user base thinks of as a rivalry. Therefore I expect Sub-Zero/Scorpion will win quite easily, but Leon will carry his team to a solid percentage all the same. Sub-Zero/Scorpion with 56.5% of the vote. --- Praise the Black Turtle, Game of the Decade Guru Champ. (Well, I never promised creativity, did I?!) |

Northeast Division: Round 1 - Match 8 – (2) Sub-Zero/Scorpion vs. (7) Leon Kennedy/Ada Wong Moltar’s Analysis Sub-Zero/Scorpion An inferior long-running fighting game rivalry steps up to the plate! Leon/Ada You are now manually remembering that Ada took 1st place in a four-way match. Poor Leon, dude would easily beat anything in this match 1v1, but here he’s tied down with Ada Wong, and no one strongly cares about that rivalry. Leon can carry this team to a decent performance, but a win may be too far out of reach. Subby and Scorp are solid performers. They’ll beat fodder but lose to anything with decent strength. However, this format should do a lot for them, as their rivalry is very well-known and respected in the gaming community. We saw that X/Zero boosted from it, and right now DK and K. Rool are benefitting from it. That rivalry boost should put them over Leon and Ada, but if the vote-in polls are any indication, the RE pair isn’t going to do badly. (Now watch this go against the trend just to screw with us) Moltar’s Bracket: Sub-Zero/Scorpion Moltar’s Prediction: Sub-Zero/Scorpion - 58% Lopen’s Analysis Kinda sucks to be Leon/Ada. In a different place in the bracket they could've done some damage. Some might say they can do damage here but I'm not too sure about that. First thing is Sub-Zero vs Leon isn't really a gimme in the first place-- most would take Leon, myself included, but not a gimme. Then you got Scorpion > Ada pretty easily, so even with raw character strengths I'd give Subz/Scorp a slight edge. And then you toss in some RIVALRY FACTOR (RIVALRY FACTOR RIVALRY FACTOR) (second biggest beneficiaries in the bracket behind Ryu/Ken), and suddenly this match isn't very debatable anymore. I think Leon/Ada can keep this respectable as they're at least a legit rivalry too unlike half this bracket, but they won't be winning. Lopen's prediction: MORTAL KOMBATTTTT with 61.29% Leon’s Analysis Here’s where the rubber meets the road (whatever that means) as far as this contest is concerned. If Leon/Ada win this match, we might as well start packing it in for the rest of the contest because that will be a big sign that the rivalries aren’t mattering enough for it to make a difference. On the other hand, if Sub-Zero/Scorpion win this match and win easily, there may be hope for some interesting matches yet. If you think this contest will basically be “The strongest character in the match will win no matter what,” then Leon/Ada should win. Leon is the strongest character in this match, and I doubt very many people (myself included) would debate that. Sub-Zero’s not far behind (I’d wager he could get 45-46% on Leon 1-on-1), but he’s clearly behind. Scorpion’s probably ahead of Ada by about the same margin. But if the rivalries DO matter, then Sub-Zero/Scorpion should win this match. I know MK isn’t as popular as RE by any stretch of the imagination, but Sub-Zero and Scorpion are popular enough on this site that the majority of gamers are familiar with the series and what this rivalry entails. It’s one of the best rivalries in the contest, in my personal opinion, and I’ve seen several of the RE4 fanboys on Board 8 say that they don’t think Leon/Ada is even much of a rivalry. Leon/Ada didn’t do that great in the vote-ins either, so we may have already seen from the vote-ins that the actual matchups matter. I may be totally off base with this one, but I’m banking on Sub-Zero/Scorpion winning this one fairly easily for the sake of a more interesting contest. Here’s hoping! Kleenex’s Analysis I made the snap pick to side with Sub-Zero/Scorpion when I first made my bracket and never bothered to glance over this match again before the deadline. Now that I'm looking back on it, I feel like it's not quite that obvious. I think that Sub-Zero and Leon would probably be a close match 1 one 1. Scorpion would certainly beat Ada without a ton of trouble, but the thing is I don't feel like Subby really gains anything from having Scorpion on his team as I imagine the fanbase there is nearly identical. That's not to say that Ada helps out Leon much either. Regardless, that should equal up to a fairly close match - one that I'm not nearly as confident about as I was when I made my bracket. It's too bad I don't actually care about anyone in this match, otherwise I could be invested in its outcome (aside from BATTLE POINTS obviously)! Kleenex's Prediction: Sub-Zero/Scorpion with 50.78% Applekidjosh’s Analysis I confess I have never understood why Gamefaqs loves it some colored ninjas. I mean Mortal Kombat was cool and all 15 years ago but I've been burned multiple times by random Ninjas in these brackets and I still just don't get it. It's not like the new games come out to any kind of critical acclaim and mass popularity. And I can't imagine the "good times" from the early 90s fighting game scene mean much when fighting game enthusiasts move to the next big thing faster than people who watch celebrity gossip shows. It just blows my mind. Also if any rivalry is actually going to work as a "rivalry" this may be it. I mean these guys just have that look! Meanwhile I had to google this other pair. Sub-Zero surprises me every single damn time he’s in a contest, yet I continue to pick against him. Man, this is a 2-7 match – noms must have been all over the map. Regardless, this is probably just my bias for RE shining through, but I think Leon can take this. If he doesn’t, my entire bracket is shot - pretty sure I have Leon/Ada going far! behind. they may well kill this match but I don't feel good picking
