doesn't get SFF'd by a whole lot of anything. That doesn't really mean
much to me. Luigi still ended up with nearly 56% by direct comparison,

think Pikachu is wonky as hell. I think he does well against elite comp
and poorly against scrubs. that's why he gets 46% on Crono and 56% on
Ike or whatever it was. he's just bizarre. Snake is elite instead of a bum, so I expect a nice performance. sprite pic doesn't hurt either. --- xyzzy |

Gear Division: Round 3 - Match 110 – (3) Auron vs. (2) Squall Leonhart Moltar’s Analysis Auron Round 1 - 57.64% vs. Aerith Round 2 - 56.69% vs. Zero Another expected Auron performance Squall Round 1 - 68.01% vs. Akuma Round 2 - 64.52% vs. Terra Wait…what This is a cool match. Squall/Auron has been debated for a pretty long time. Time to find out who wins this battle of the Square near-elites! Squall was the big favorite pre-contest because while Auron has looked good over the years, Squall has looked slightly better. 2005? Auron loses to Ganon 55-45 while Squall is pretty much even with Vincent (and Vincent > Ganon one year later) 2006? Auron loses to a weaker Crono with 45% while Squall gets 42% on a beast Snake who beat Sonic who beat Crono. Admittedly, Auron is probably the winner in four-ways seeing as how he’s beaten Sonic, something with Squall failed to do several times. It’s really hard to say anything conclusive about their 2007 and 2008 runs seeing as how both kept getting hit by SFF/LFF. Now we’ve hit this contest, and Terra match aside, both characters have done pretty much as expected. I went into the match thinking that Squall is the favorite, and I’ve seen no reason to change my mind, especially from Auron. Terra can be explained as DISSIDIA BOOST, so I still think Squall will edge out Auron in a close one. Moltar’s Bracket: Squall > Auron Moltar’s Prediction: Auron: 49% - Squall: 51% Lopen’s Analysis The battle of disappointments, but both of their opponents had reason to do well last round so I don't think you can take much from it. I figure Squall's going to get support in a rout here because people are like "Squall > Zero and there wasn't much breathing room" Well I won't go against this, I still like Squall here, but not necessarily because I think Squall's a lock to do 7% better than Zero. More just Squall vs Auron in a SFF match I have a hard time buying more of the vote going Auron's way. "Gut." Ha ha ha... yeah. Should be a close one much like Squall/Vincent was back in the day, but Squall's more proven in SFF situations so yeah let's go with him. Lopen's prediction: Squall with 50.53% Transience’s Analysis Here's a big match. Ever since 2006, we've had an argument going on about Auron, Squall, Tifa and Vincent. All are top 15 characters. All have had new spinoffs and movies and all that good stuff. They all seem to be about the same strength, but who does the fanbase prefer? If you go on pure strength and recognizability, you take Squall in this match. You can make arguments for Auron if you bend the numbers enough, but ultimately Squall has had the better performances. He performed a little better against Aeris than Auron did this year. He's been in more games. He's a main character and has a more central role in the KH series. He's just more relevant than Auron. But Auron's got this fan-favourite thing going on, and this isn't a matchup of strength. This match is all about who the fanbase prefers. Auron's had this argument in his favour for years: - what's more popular, FF8 or FF10? (answer: FF10) - is Auron as liked within the FF10 fanbase as Squall is within the FF8 fanbase? (yes) - now that Auron has KH2 and is apparently pretty awesome in it, what advantage does Squall now have over him? It's a solid argument and I think it has some merit. People on average just seem to like Auron more than Squall. In matches with overlap, Auron has fared better than Squall has. Both get murdered by Cloud, but Auron has stood up better over the years. Auron's also withstood Sephiroth a couple of times and not gotten killed. |

yet I'm backing Squall here -- don't even ask me why. It's an x-stat
thing, it's a matter of him being more relevant, and it's that Auron
has never once looked stronger than him. He might beat him in a
heads-up match but Squall looks to be the stronger character. Auron
will have to prove it to me. Also, this is a day match and Squall's probably better in the day than Auron is. This match probably isn't that close but it's tough to say who wins. Then again, I said the same thing about Squall/Vincent and we all saw how that turned out. transience's prediction: Squall with 52.45% Ngamer’s Analysis Quickie w/ Ng: I like that Squall doesn't get his insane dead hours vote, I like that Auron's sporting the bigger swordzzzz, I like that he gets to face Smilin' Squall, and I like that Auron has looked more impressive through the first two rounds. But what I REALLY like is how I'm 2 for 2 in willing upsets to happen when my bracket's life depends on it. Let's keep a good thing going! Ngamer Says: Auron > Squall, 50.11% Kleenex’s Analysis No time for a big fancy analysis for this match. Squall's been better than Auron forever and I see no reason for that to flip now. Squall should win this fairly easily. Squall with 54.78% Red Sox’s Analysis This is a match that I'm sure some people will provide a lot of analysis and commentary on. I'm not sure who the guest is, but there are multiple people at least who could be guests who will probably provide us with a wall of text. I'm not going to, because the match has never interested me that much. That doesn't mean I'm confident about the result, but Squall has always seemed just a little bit stronger than Auron to me, and therefore a fairly clear, yet not heavy, favorite. That is, I thought there were good reasons Squall deserves to be the favorite, but those reasons do not give him a terribly high probability of winning. After what we've seen this contest, I don't think there's even a great case for Squall being the favorite anymore, though I guess he remains favorite until proven otherwise. Let's compare them through the years: 2006: 42% on Snake vs. 45.5% on Crono- Advantage Squall 2007: 49% on Sonic with Sora, then Snake in the poll vs. 57% on Ryu- Even 2008: 58% on Yoshi vs. 54% on Sonic- Even 2009: 64.5% on Terra vs. 56.5% on Zero, 57.5% on Aeris- Even Actually, I'm just going to base my prediction on Aeris, since Squall faced her in 2007 too, getting about half a percent higher than Auron did. But I guess Auron would have done better in a 24-hour match making it even closer...... Prediction: Squall with 50.24% Upset Potential: 48% Upper Bound: Squall with 55% Lower Bound: Auron with 55% Guest’s Analysis - Leonhart This is the showdown I’ve been waiting all contest to see. Both characters have done just about as expected up to this point (Squall’s performance on Terra looks better in retrospect after Bowser whipped Sora the other way), so this is hopefully going to be an epic duel for the ages, a la Squall/Vincent 2005, only with a better winner! |
Personally,
I think Squall’s always been a little bit ahead of Auron. If you look
at their 2006 matches (which should give us some pretty clean
extrapolation through Snake, Sonic, and Crono), Squall wins with 52.50%
of the vote. That’s not a huge margin of victory, of course, but close
enough that it wouldn’t be in doubt. But then again, that was three years ago. The only problem is that this is basically the only clean read we’ve EVER gotten on Auron other than maybe 2005. In 2003, he faced Cloud. In 2004, he faced Sephiroth. In 2005, he faced Ganondorf (who was on Villains Contest ‘roids) who then faced Samus, maybe a little SFF there. In 2007, he faced Cloud. In 2008, he faced Sephiroth. Auron looked great the last two years though. He smoked Ryu and Bowser in round 2 in 2007 and almost beat Ryu in round 3 in spite of Cloud. He beat Sonic easily in 2008. That one victory over Sonic is probably the best evidence Auron’s got in his corner to win because he beat him and Squall couldn’t do it in two tries in 2007. In Squall’s defense, Sonic got announced for Brawl in the middle of that contest, so I think if the Blue Blur hadn’t gotten that announcement during the contest, he would have beaten him, too, but that’s purely conjecture, obviously. This is a match that could go either way. There’s really no clear favorite in this match, no performance that clearly puts one character above the other. I think that’s one of the things that makes this match so intriguing. Both characters are very strong, and they both have solid arguments for winning. And while I know Dissidia hasn’t really helped New Square noticeably, it might be enough to put or keep Squall over the top here, just a minor X-Factor. Hopefully, it’ll be a good one!
