I was probably scared because Ganon has never broken 62% in a summer contest before, lol.

nah, Liquid looked constant all three rounds. he was a beast.

I think we're just going to have to coin a new term: "Pulling an Altair."

Pulling an Altair means that, as an underdog, you impress so much in round 1 that you make everyone change their minds about you and pick you to win round 2, only for you to flop horribly.

Yeah, which is why I stuck with Vivi (though I wish I had gone higher with my Oracle! I chickened out and went low!). Plus, with the whole Liquid being Liquid thing, I was very skeptical about Altair's round 1 performance.

And assuming Altair ends at 45% on Vivi here, you get this:

Altair - 45.00%
Donkey Kong - 43.71%
Liquid Snake - 36.79%

This would basically make Vivi/Alucard a 55/45 match, and it would make Yuna and Vivi equals essentially based on Yuna's round 2 match with Liquid and Alucard. Makes sense to me, really.

Oh, and DK beats Liquid with 57.92%. What in the world happened to DK against Tidus last year?

Dante feels like a different story from the other action game characters we've seen. He's actually shown to be a proven commodity. Ryu's still got a shot because Dante's got to prove he can win the big one though.

Part of me wonders if Yuna isn't stronger than Tidus though. Actually, let me look at something...

Zack beat Altair with 64.91% last year. Assuming Vivi wins with 55%, that would mean that Zack beats Vivi with 61.99%, which would mean Yuna beats Vivi with 54.08%.

If we use Altair's ratio on Duke from the previous round, Zack beats Altair with 60.83%. Assuming Vivi wins with 55%, that would mean Zack beats Vivi with 56.48%, which would mean Vivi beats Yuna with 52.34%, which probably would be more accurate.

All of this is assuming that Altair hasn't boosted at all from last year, which may not be the case though.

how about relating Vivi vs. DK to Tidus vs. DK last year? Tidus has to be the winner based on those numbers.

conclusion: these fourth-tier Square characters are all pretty close and it depends who the fanbase supports.

Yeah, Tidus would beat Vivi based on their performances on DK with 54.12%.

But if you use Tidus's round 2 performance on the Cube as compared to DK's round 1 on the Cube, you end up with Vivi winning with 51.29%, and he beat Tidus with 51.07% in 2007.

Huh, that's surprisingly accurate.

Makes Ryu look pretty bad though, if you do the same thing with L-Block though.

In 2005, Mario defeated Snake. Now, he gets to defeat Snake proxy! Big Boss should do fine here since he doesn’t have an old man picture and it’s a night match, but it’s clear that he is not as strong as Snake. Snake over Mario is iffy, so no way am I going to take BB over Mario. Hoping he can impress!

For some reason, Big Boss terrified me here when I made my bracket. I saw a straight night match and Mario vs "Snake" and it was like "whaaaa."

Now I still picked Mario, and I think it'll be close, but do not deny Big Boss's ability to mistake Mario's super mushrooms for Russian Glowcaps and just wolf them down. Night's gonna help a lot, and arguably the short match as well, and well... The Boss is gonna look really good here I think. If Mario showed any weakness in r1 I so would've taken Boss here, but as it stands Mario should hold him off.

Transience’s Analysis

Oh man, here it is. I've been looking forward to this. This could be a crazy match.

We've seen Big Boss perform as a Solid Snake proxy when he gets the right picture. He's smashed Magus, destroyed Kirby and just recently tripled Edgeworth. Not bad for a guy who once got tripled by Auron, no?

Well, here we go again. Big Boss has a Naked Snake picture and is going against Mario. It's also a night match, which is to his advantage, and on a weekend to boot. Mario's got his kickass morning vote to save him if it's close, but if there was ever a time where a guy that's probably not in the top 20 could beat a top 5 guy like Mario, this is it.

It'd be suicide to actually bet on this happening, but you never know! This would be a much more fun result than a joke character breaking the Noble Nine. Let's do this, Big Boss.

If there's one good thing about this match, it'll be that it lets us figure out where Big Boss really stands. From getting melty pictures and losing in round one, to getting Snake pictures and beating the likes of Kirby, the dude's skyrocketed over the past few years.

Big Boss isn't going to pull off the miracle in this match, but I think he might do a little too well. Hopefully not, though !

Big Boss gets his night match against Mario with a Snake picture. Naturally, people have high hopes for this match, and since I think Mario Deboosted in 2008, I think Big Boss will do pretty well here. But let's not forget that we saw this match in 2007, and Big Boss only got 35%- he's boosted since then with MGS4 too, and this is a night match, but it's a long way from 35% to 45%, which I would love to see but is probably out of reach. A more attainable target is Snake's 2005 percentage of 42.79%- I think he'll probably get close but miss it by a little bit.

Prediction: Mario with 57.79%
Upset Potential: 1% (Yes, not 0%!)
Upper Bound: Mario with 61%
Lower Bound: Mario with 55%

Hmm, what’s this? Mario is facing a character who looks similar to the main character of the series (or should we say, the main character looks similar to him) in a second round match that serves as a prelude before a showdown with a Noble Niner later on (as an aside, why couldn’t we have gotten Mario/Mega Man in 2002-2004, when it would’ve actually been interesting)? And the character Mario’s facing throttled his first round opponent beyond the average board expectation while Mario put up a ho-hum performance on a Nintendo character? This sounds familiar. Where have I seen this before?

Yeah, I get the feeling that the rest of the board doesn't really believe in Big Boss. I saw the spread for the match in Spread Betting, and I was like, "Whoa, that seems too high." This is his chance to prove himself. Even though I know Big Boss has virtually no chance to win this match, I've been looking forward to this one since I saw this match in the bracket.
