Character Battle VIII Contest Analysis Crew - Part 4
Also, Lopen's analysis had me cracking up for some reason. --- Currently not on the CBVIII Leaderboard V_V Dante > Cloud: ITS HAPPENING |

I mean, this is definitely one of the biggest days in Contest history. Yoshi tripled Jak! ... ... Oh and Crono lost to Missingno breaking the Noble Nine in 1v1 competition making their record 124-1. Why it Happened: Jak is weaksauce. As for Missingno, just look at those vote totals. Tons of rallying paid off for the glitch and helped him keep the lead the entire match against Crono. What will Happen: Missingno has a Yoshi in his path, and if he can get past that, then the sky is the limit. Ngamer's Fantastical Writeup I'm still struggling to wrap my mind around that Crono result. I'll have to get back to you on that one later. One very exciting match down, leading directly into... another good one tonight? Dang, sure would have been nice to have polls like this more evenly spread throughout the bracket! But yeah, this matchup should be fun just because it's so rare to see such modern, untested opponents go head to head like this. I'm of the opinion that in a poll where recency is going to play such a huge role, timing is everything. As in, set this up for two months ago and I support Soap without hesitation, give it to me a month back when the hype hadn't really started for Bioshock 2 and I don't know what I do. ....but give it to me NOW, with BS2 at the height of its popularity, everyone having fond memories of the first game, and Daddy sporting his memorable look from the BS1 box, and the choice is clear. Which doesn't mean I think he'll have it easy- Cpt Price was almost certainly a much better indicator for the CoD series than Cpt Seaweed, so Soap could easily be strong enough to advance past dozens of the jobbers than snuck into this overstuffed bracket. He could probably have gotten by BD as well, but he got unlucky on two fronts: BS2 getting literally the perfect release date as we talked about, and this falling into the Night Match category. I'm not sure how Bioshock does outside the US and so I don't know if taking this overnight shift actually "helps," but I do think MW2 would easily have trumped it in the American Xbox ASV category, perhaps by enough to pull the upset. As is, I'm don't have a ton of confidence in my choice but will still take Big Daddy to grind out a victory in a fairly close, low-scoring affair. Crap! That's 2 characters in a row that I had going to round 3 that lost in the first round >:( --- "Run, run, or you'll be well done!" ~Kefka, Final Fantasy 6~ |
just sent in my Geno/Ness analysis --- Oracle Challenge 2k10 - Rank: 14th Today's prediction: Soap MacTavish - 50.90% Status: garbage |
Jenova Division: Round 1 - Match 62 – (6) Ness vs. (11) Geno Moltar’s Analysis Ness Ness is always sounded by weak. What is it with this guy? Geno Geyes Wow this is a crappy four-pack (well the jury’s still out on Big Daddy). Ness is weak and has a small dedicated fanbase, but Geno is even weaker with a smaller fanbase. At least Ness has Smash, and that should be all the exposure he needs to win this match. Moltar’s Bracket: Ness > Geno Moltar’s Prediction: Ness: 61% - Geno: 39% Lopen’s Analysis It's 5am in the morning and I forgot about this. BRIEF WRITEUP INCOMING. Ness wins this because he's in Smash Bros, basically. Geno becomes PK Firewood. Think STATZ might have this as more of a push than consensus will indicate though, so there's a decent upset chance here, I think, especially with Geno's fan favorite status from SMRPG. I'll laugh when Geno gets to round 2 and he has the SAME DAMN PICTURE cause that's all he has. Lopen's Prediction: Ness with 50.52% Transience’s Analysis I just broke my laptop so I'll be quick here. I have no idea why Geno made one contest, let alone three or four. Get this thing out of here. It has zero plot relevance, isn't cool and isn't even from that big of a game. It boggles my mind every time I have to talk about this thing. Ness wins by virtue of being well-known. I think he might even win big just because of his opponent. transience's prediction: Ness with 66.49% Ngamer’s Analysis Fantastical writeup coming soon! Ngamer Says: Ness > Geno, 59.51% Kleenex’s Analysis Hey, Ness finally gets to win one. Bracket: Ness Favorites: Geno Prediction: Ness with 59.87% |
Red Sox’s Analysis I'm still in a state of....well, not shock since it wasn't entirely unexpected (I did give it a 5% chance of happening), but something similar to shock. This is a pretty boring match that I'm not really going to pay attention to even in the event that it is close. Frankly, I just want to get to Wednesday so we can see Red vs. MMX, which is suddenly looking interesting again after Charizard, Pikachu, and Missingno all greatly impressing and Soap doing awful today, which makes Price and thus MMX look bad. For this match, Ness should win pretty easily, as he's the historically stronger character and he should pick up any SFF in the match, which may be significant as they are both SNES RPG and Nintendo characters. There's not much in the way of stats to work with thanks to lots of SFF in Geno's past matches, but Ness should be pretty safe. Now then, I am now rooting for the following upsets (some of which look pretty absurd) to happen: Red > MMX (YES) Charizard > Mario (Sora's too low a target now!) Weighted Companion Cube > Luigi Pikachu > Snake (aw yeah sprite round) Missingno > Link (to save this contest) Prediction: Ness with 63% Upset Potential: 20% Upper Bound: Ness with 70% Lower Bound: Geno with 55% Guest’s Analysis - GrapefruitKing Christ, I kinda forgot that I had to write this so I'll make it quick This is a boring match. Geno is high fodder at best. In his last 1v.1 match he got tripled by Squall in 2k5. Stop nominating him. He isn't even a remotely interesting character. He does nothing special in his god damn game. Get over it. He's facing Ness, who's not exactly a strong midcarder, but has enough strength to win this easily and to put up a great fight in R2 against Big Daddy. This should be amongst the most debated R2 matches. For today though, he'll just embarass Geno. GrapefruitKing's surprisingly accurate prediction: Ness with 63.38% Crew Consensus: Ness wins in a ‘who cares’ match |
Geno with 70% incoming --- who needs a dick when you're good at smash brothers - stingers Now this is entertainment! |
I'm
partially interested in this match because this is the first time Geno
has faced someone who isn't ridiculously stronger than he is. I think
he can do pretty well. --- "I couldn't stand a day without a past or future. I need to live each moment to keep fighting here and now." |
Get
this thing out of here. It has zero plot relevance, isn't cool and
isn't even from that big of a game. It boggles my mind every time I
have to talk about this thing. My thoughts exactly, as shown in my write-up *high 5's* --- Oracle Challenge 2k10 - Rank: 14th Today's prediction: Soap MacTavish - 50.90% Status: garbage |
Yeah
I'm not really sure why Geno is a fan favorite either. Maybe because
out of all the original characters in SMRPG, he's the least pointless?
I don't know. --- KrahenProphet lived up to his name. |
he's
the most pointless! Mallow is far more plot-relevant than he is. I
could understand it if Geno was super cool or something, but everyone
uses the Mario characters in Mario RPG. I think Ness could SFF Geno here. --- xyzzy |
From: KamikazePotato | #148 yeah does anyone care about this match I do. Bioshock is awesome and Big Daddies are too. --- Go away meanie! |
Mallow > Geno But yeah, Mario/Toadstool/Bowser is THE Mario RPG party. --- "Hold on a minute! That testimony stinks!" "Witness! You can't just say 'Hello' and expect us to get anywhere! I want you to testify!" |
hey, not bad Geno Ness sucks --- xyzzy |
Ness getting 60% on someone? Get him out of these contests. --- "I couldn't stand a day without a past or future. I need to live each moment to keep fighting here and now." |
awwww yeah Ness --- KrahenProphet lived up to his name. |
alright, that's more like it no more Geno --- xyzzy |
I'm really not sure why anyone considered it possible that Ness would get less than 60% --- Oracle Challenge 2k10 - Rank: 18th Today's prediction: Ness - 63.38% Status: decent |
Because Ness sucks. I love Ness, but he just sucks in these things. --- KrahenProphet lived up to his name. |
Well Geno sucks way more <_< at least Ness got pretty close to Liquid and Alucard in 2k7... and he sucked in 2k8 because Mewtwo was there Geno was closer to Deckard Cain than to Phoenix Wright last year... that's pretty pathetic --- Oracle Challenge 2k10 - Rank: 18th Today's prediction: Ness - 63.38% Status: decent |
Well I did forget about the Deckard Cain thing. That was prety bad. --- KrahenProphet lived up to his name. |
My fault was that I thought Geno got 30% on Squall in 2k5 rather than 25%, so I thought he was a bit stronger than he was. --- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love! |
It's
funny how Ness has the reputation for being sucky now when, back before
2007, he was basically the stock character for low level midcard
character matches. HaRRicH was especially fond of the guy! --- "But you have been given freedom. Freedom to be...outside." "I am lightning...the rain transformed." |
Ness has a reputation for being sucky now because 1. He lost two debatable matches 2. The Stats Topic turned on Earthbound --- KrahenProphet lived up to his name. |

When did the Stats Topic turn on Earthbound anyway? The same people like it and the same people dislike it. --- "The great GF...Bahamut." "...GF? I...? Using my powers...It is you humans...I fear..." |
Most
of the people in the Stats Topic only know Earthbound through Ness'
contest performances. When he started losing them points, they got mad
at him. --- KrahenProphet lived up to his name. |
Man, I hated Ness before it was cool! He was my least favorite character in the original Smash Bros.! --- "The great GF...Bahamut." "...GF? I...? Using my powers...It is you humans...I fear..." |
So most of the people in the stats Topic never heard of Super Smash Bros until Ness' contest performances? --- The Gamer In Me My Signature's broken, just like your front door. |
Anyway I'll be out later, and E-mail is for squares. KP's Guest Analysis: The Awesome Tales Character vs. The Crappy FF7 Character As much as I want Yuri to do well here, he's going to get blown the hell out. I thought for a bit that Yuri could make this semi-respectable, then I looked at past results and say that 2k5 Vyse got 21% on Tifa and 2k6 The Boss got tripled. Stupid Tifa. Yuri doesn't even really get the anti-FF7 stigma that seems to be happening as he's the higher seed and thus not the clear underdog to casuals. Even his fans agree that his design sucks and looks like a girl, and against Tifa, that's not good. He also doesn't even get to dominate the early vote, as Tifa's is good for whatever reason. In fact, as Vesperia is a 360 game, it's probably better in the day than in the night anyway, so Tifa gets her best time against Yuri. In summary, this match sucks. Yuri has absolute no factors going his way to make himself look decent, and he's probably already below Lloyd in strength. He's not going to be the next Luke or Jade, but sadly Vesperia just doesn't have a high-enough playrate on GameFAQs. Well, he does have one thing going for him: he's awesome. Not in a Jade "He's a fan favorite" sort of way, Yuri is both the main character and easily the most popular Tales character ever within the fanbase. If a poll was held and restricted only to people who had played all the games, Yuri would murder everyone else. That gives me a bit of hope here. Also, I am a fanboy. Yuri with 27% I refuse to list Tifa's percent as I refuse to acknowledge her as a character --- KrahenProphet lived up to his name. |
I refuse to list Tifa's percent as I refuse to acknowledge her as a character Silly boy. --- "Why must we always choose between certain death and probable death?" "I'm in an epic battle to the death, FIGURE IT OUT YOURSELF!" |
From: LeonhartFour | #182 The hell is wrong with you? Ness was the **** in the original Smash, he became my favorite character and i'd never played EB. They gimped the hell out of him in the sequels though. --- "Flash runs alongside balefire watching marshmallows stop existing" - War |
I could never use him well, and I always hated playing against it! Kirby for life! --- "The great GF...Bahamut." "...GF? I...? Using my powers...It is you humans...I fear..." |
Yeah if I was being serious Tifa could get 78% here. She really does have a million factors lined up in her favor. But GO YURI --- KrahenProphet lived up to his name. |
Sounds like a problem with the player, not the character! At least your favorite is still a good pick though, Kirby was probably my #2 favorite. --- "The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it." - George Bernard Shaw |
Sounds like a problem with the player, not the character! Well, it's a fighting game, man! What else do you expect me to have problems with? --- "Stay with me until the end. Please." "Not until the end. Always." |
Just sayin', don't hate the character just because you suck at video games! :P --- "The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it." - George Bernard Shaw |
From: Chaotic Mind | #191 I can hate Ness for whatever reason I want! And I will! --- "Stay with me until the end. Please." "Not until the end. Always." |
Well at least you don't deny that you suck at video games :P --- "The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it." - George Bernard Shaw |
I openly admit it! And I'm still better than all my real life friends at Smash Bros. and Street Fighter! --- "Stay with me until the end. Please." "Not until the end. Always." |
Yeah I'm not really sure why Geno is a fan favorite either. As a former Geno fanboy, maybe I can explain. The people who liked SMRPG the most liked it because it was a Square RPG starring Nintendo's characters. That means they liked Square RPGs, which means they liked Final Fantasy. (Yes, these are all broad generalizations. Sue me.) And Geno is about as much Final Fantasy as you can get in a Mario game, give or take a Culex. He's got cool powers, a serious attitude, and an attack that can do 9999 damage with proper timing. In a world full of Nintendo fluff, he was the closest thing to a badass. So why am I a former Geno fanboy? I'm really not sure. At some point a few years ago, I just stopped caring. Maybe I grew up? |
I
think I probably would have been a Geno fanboy, but SMRPG was just a
little before my time. Yes, I admit it: my first console was a Nintendo
64. --- CB8 score: 52 Incorrect picks: Ocelot, Wesker, Fawful, Tidus (2 rounds), Phoenix (2 rounds), Simon, Kratos Aurion, Crono, Soap MacTavish |

Geno's alright. Better than Ness at any rate! --- If you're seeing this sig, I'm not on my computer! |
