considered the third most popular Sonic character, only behind Sonic

Knuckles is the 4th most popular. Well, I suppose you're right about Shadow not being able to catch up to Amaterasu here, but Amaterasu is certainly a good few steps ahead of Zidane. I'm not really trying to prove my point here, though. |
Varia Division: Round 1 - Match 34 – (8) Niko Bellic vs. (9) Jill Valentine Moltar’s Analysis Niko This punk…I know better this time around. Jill I’d give her a Jill sandwich if you know what I….wait what This match could have been a good trap match back in 2008. We had the untested, fresh off of GTA4 character, Niko, and the “Hey I lost to Ocelot last year” character, Jill. However, 2008 not only showed that Niko sucks, but also that Jill still has fight left in her. While Niko was out in R1 thanks to Duke, Jill beat Ocelot in the rematch to move on to Round 2. Since then, GTA4 has faded away, and RE is looking really good (at least Wesker did). There should be no question about this match today. Jill’s easily got this. Moltar’s Bracket: Jill > Niko Moltar’s Prediction: Niko: 40% - Jill: 60% Lopen’s Analysis Well Niko looked bad last year, till we saw Kefka, now he looks good. That is, until we saw Duke, now he looks bad... maybe? Who knows. I'm still liking Jill to take this one-- more reasons for Kefka to boost (much better pic, Dissidia 4REAL) from last year, and Duke "got blown out by Charizard" Nukem can only be so strong unless you want Charizard to go beat up NNers. Jill sportin her crack addict picture might hurt her, but I don't think it makes a huge difference. Not enough for Niko to win or even come all that close. Helps that Wesker looked really good and I've heard "certain somethings" as it relates to Jill Valentine and the franchise, as well. Lopen's prediction: Jill with 56.78% Transience’s Analysis Today's match probably deserves more talk than it's gotten. Jill has been stronger historically, but Niko has had two new episodes of DLC this year, has the better picture and is better during the daytime. But am I going to pick Niko? Hell no. Like Kefka, I won't burn myself on something GTA4-related until it gives me a damn good reason to. Niko lost to Duke Nukem and we all saw how that went the other day. He also lost to Marth. I feel pretty good about this match after seeing Wesker give Ken all he could handle. Yeah, Wesker is front and center in RE5 while Jill is.. well, not exactly the Jill of old. Street Fighter is probably going to have a down year, too. Still, that's more than I can say about GTA lately. I don't think Tommy Vercetti even made the bracket (I'd have to check, but I don't recall hearing his name), and GTA sucked it up in the Game Contest. Jill is that group with Ocelot and Kefka - the characters who alter their performances wildly from year to year just to mess with brackets. Normally, this would make me wary her picking her here, but after pondering it a bit, I think she takes this pretty easily. Niko didn't exactly impress last year, no really cares about GTA4 anymore, and Jill's got a fancy new RE5 release coming out in a month. I have a hard time trusting either of these characters, but I just can't help but feel that no one actually cares about Niko Bellic, and I don't think I'm wrong there. Both these guys burned me last year, hence my distrust, but I'm siding with Jill just because she seems to have more fans. She'll probably go and lose by 27 votes or whatever it is, but hey, what can ya do? Bracket: Jill Favorites: Jill Prediction: Jill with 57.31% |
Red Sox’s Analysis Kratos failing against Tails today suddenly made this match a lot more interesting. Jill only did about 1% better on Kratos last year than Tails is doing today. Nonetheless, Niko is pretty weak, barely finishing ahead of Kefka last year. He’s also a character I would expect to be considerably weaker this year than last, when he was fresh off of his game. GTAIV was somewhat big then, now it seems to be mostly forgotten. Stats-wise, this match is projected to be fairly close, but because I’m expecting Niko to be weaker this year, I think Jill will probably take it handily. There’s also a chance that Kratos fell since 2008, and Jill has always had some strength, especially recently as Resident Evil has looked very good the past couple of years. Prediction: Jill with 57.00% Upset Potential: 15% Upper Bound: Jill with 65% Lower Bound: Niko with 52% Guest’s Analysis - Luis_Sera89 Jill is always good value in GameFAQs contests. When she's not losing by identical values in two ridiculously close matches, she's inexplicably usurping Ocelot in a match she lost only 12 months previously for seemingly no reason. And now here she is in 2010, in an 8/9 match-up against an opponent of debateably similar strength. Fun times await? Possibly not. In his one appearance to date, Niko was disapointingly underwhelming. Never really putting up a fight in a first round 4-way he easily lost to Marth and Duke, finishing only marginally ahead of Kefka. The Kefka that sucked like anything in any match prior to this year that is. The fact that GTAIV didn't exactly start any fires in the following games contest shows that he probably just isn't all that popular. Cetainly less so than Vercetti back in his heyday, and comparable with CJ. He could have an interesting match with Ness. Jill is somewhat above that level though, and I see her having her first somewhat comfortable match since... well, Sheena? There are a number of factors against her - it's a day match, which RE characters traditionally aren't thrilled with, and she doesn't have her more recognisable RE1 or 3 artwork (not that I'm complaining, I probably prefer her stuff from the Russia arc of Umbrella Chronicles), but then I just think "Good Lord, Wesker", and can't help but believe that RE as a series is continuing it's little upswing in fortunes on the site as a whole. I'm not expecting Jill to recieve as much of a boost from RE5 as Chris and certainly Wesker have and will get, but it should be enough to at least achieve status quo and pick up a solid win. I just don't have much faith in Niko to pull off much of anything. The winner here gets the right of being fed to Samus, who is slaughtering the Prince as I speak, but assuming Jill wins as expected, it should at least give us a bearing as to her strength after a few dodgy years. Ngamer's Fantastical Writeup Yess, perfect Samus pick! Well, not quite, as I guess I slightly underestimated her despite giving her all the credit in the world, but I do think that was the perfect writeup. As in, there's no way she pushes for 80 against cool looking Sands of Time Prince, but as soon as you move away from his one game that everyone agrees was fun, PoP's support evaporates in a hurry. Ah well... hopefully the movie will be a big hit and he can return to redeem himself next season! Not so long ago I could have seen today's battle drawing "match of the round"-type hype. People new to the site probably wouldn't believe me, but there was a time when Grand Theft Auto was #1 on the FAQ listing for years at a time, could win Game of the Year honors site-wide... heck, it could even be favored to win head to head against Melee! But the long delay between GTA:SA and GTA4 changed all that, and combined with a lukewarm response to 4 despite a solid month of pro review hype, the series is now little more than a punching bag when it comes to site-wide polls. Compare that to Resident Evil, a series that has been on fire from almost the moment GTA began its downswing, thanks to RE4. Now true, there was some talk last month about the slightly disappointing RE5 having perhaps taken the wind out of RE's sails, but I can't imagine anyone still thinking that way after seeing the number Wesker hung on Ken. Personally I think a good bit of the series' newfound respectability ties back to its Wii releases of the last few years; people are always surprised to hear that Umbrella Chronicles sold well over a million copies, but couldn't you see plenty of younger gamers picking that up because they didn't know what else to do with their new Zapper once they beat Link's Crossbow Training? And once they had a taste of RE's crazy backstory in UC, I could easily see them being interested enough to check out older games in the series or read up on the characters, and slowly expanding to new audiences like that is exactly what a series should be trying to do- in GameFAQs terms you could call it a "Kingdom Hearts effect", I suppose. Anyways, long story short: GTA4's not well loved, neither is Niko, Jill's at least up there around Ocelot's level and is probably trending stronger over the last 18 month, and then she goes and looks cute in this match pic as if she needed any more help. This result seemed clear cut to me on the day brackets opened and I still feel that way now: give me Ms. Valentine in an Ulti-blowout. Varia Division: Round 1 - Match 35 – (5) Roxas vs. (12) Heavy Moltar’s Analysis Roxas Hey look it’s Sora version 1398453.5 Heavy Another TF2 character gets his shot. Well, Roxas hasn’t won anything in four-ways. Then again, in 2007 he was stuck with Riku, and in 2008 he had two stronger characters with him. Well, Heavy certainly doesn’t look stronger than Roxas, so maybe he can finally reach R2 this time. Roxas got 32% on Luigi, Heavy got 25% on Kratos. The former looks better, but I’m still unsure. Spy looked really good a week ago, but that could have just been because he was facing Master Chief. Roxas is definitely the safe bet here, but Heavy does have a shot at the upset in a night match. Moltar’s Bracket: Roxas > Heavy Moltar’s Prediction: Roxas: 57% - Heavy: 43% Lopen’s Analysis Well I'm sure most GameFAQs users can get behind Heavy. GET IT GET IT. CAUSE THEY'RE OVERWEIGHT SLOBS. I'm kidding. Man I'm tired. Spy did well against Chief, Chief > Roxas, Spy > Heavy. Night match probably favors Heavy. Will 4CHAN appear again~? This is the part where I put on shades or something. Lopen's prediction: Roxas with whatever Chief got on Spy -6%. Uh let's just go with Roxas with 54.44% Transience’s Analysis I dunno why, but I have a higher opinion of Roxas than others do. This guy gets into every damn contest with seemingly no help. He seems, at least from my outsider perspective, to be getting a lot of face time in the Kingdom Hearts series. He doesn't seem to be the most beloved character, but nor is Sora and he seems to do really well. I think Roxas could outperform Master Chief on Random TF2 Character today en route to giving Tidus or Sub-Zero a nice match. Ngamer Says: Roxas > Heavy, 59.12% Kleenex’s Analysis A little pressed for time tonight, so today's writeups are gonna be shorter than usual. Neither Heavy not Spy looked particularly great last year, and even though Spy impressed a few days ago, he still lost to Chief convincingly. Heavy is likely the weaker of the two, and Roxas is coming off a new game that won the DS Game of the Year on the site. Roxas takes this one fairly easy, Steam rallying or whatever be damned. Bracket: Roxas Favorites: Roxas Prediction: Roxas with 59.21% Red Sox’s Analysis Roxas is from Kingdom Hearts, and has some strength- nothing that will let him beat even a mid-midcarder, but he can handle fodder without problems. Heavy is probably fodder, although he’s apparently from Valve which apparently is supposed to make you think twice about his strength. I don’t want to call this match a lock, but Roxas is the heavy favorite until proven otherwise. There's not too much to say- it's hard to predict percentages with weak characters that we have poor or nonexistent reads on. The winner loses in the next round to the winner of Tidus/Sub-Zero, one of our most interesting first round matches, coming up in a little over 12 hours. Prediction: Roxas with 56.00% Upset Potential: 20% Upper Bound: Roxas with 66% Lower Bound: Heavy with 54% |
Guest’s Analysis - Biolizard28 There is exactly one reason why I picked this match to do a write-up for, and that’s because I believe in Heavy Weapons Guy. If 2008 is any indication, and hell, the games contest, TF2 doesn’t have any strength to speak of in these contests. Spy and Heavy both scored poorly in 2008, and TF2 bombed out of the games contest, albeit against powerful competition and the biggest FPS of the time in the same poll. Meanwhile, Roxas has also sucked it up, and his unhindered 2008 run ended with him getting trashed by Liquid Snake and Luigi. Still, on the whole, Roxas should be able to suck less, right? Enter Spy, who went on to not only embarrass Master Chief, but give the Heavy hope of an upset. Think about it: near 40% on Master Chief is certainly worth more than getting blown away by an SFF’d Ike, which means that Spy must have “found” strength somewhere. Anti-votes, you say? Consider that Roxas represents a turning point in the Kingdom Hearts saga. The point when the games stopped being about visiting Disney worlds, a plot centered around those worlds and their characters, and everything else seemed secondary, and became a convoluted “mess” trying to peddle its needlessly dramatic plot to everyone willing to play. Roxas was the first taste of KH2 players got, and if they left hating the game, and I know that most people at least consider KH1 a few tiers above KH2, they’re going to remember him. Meanwhile, the Heavy not only has an apparent Valve “boost” on his side, but is infinitely more recognizable than the Spy. He is the joke everyone is in on, thanks to being the face of the game and his beloved sandvich, while Spy is more of an in-joke among TF2 players. This should make him considerably stronger, enough to actually win this match. But I’m not delusional, if Heavy pulls this off, it will be very, very close. But for today only, I throw away logic and kick reason to the curb. Today, I believe in Heavy Weapons Guy.
