West Division: Round 3 - Match 109 – (1) Metal Gear Solid 3 vs. (5) Paper Mario Moltar’s Analysis Metal Gear Solid 3 Round 1 - 76.85% on Timesplitters 2 Round 2 - 63.85% on Marvel vs. Capcom 2 MvC2 putting up a fight in this match. Paper Mario Round 1 - 72.14% on Katamari Damacy Round 2 - 59.15% on World of Warcraft Catacalysm hype no help here One of the themes of this contest is that MGS isn’t what it was in fourways. MGS hasn’t impressed against decent competition once. And hey, guess what Paper Mario is! So yeah, I’m not expected PM to win here, but it’s not out of the question. Paper Mario has looked good all contest. I’m predicting MGS3 takes this match in an unimpressive fashion. Moltar’s Bracket: MGS3 wins Moltar’s Prediction: MGS3 - 56% Lopen’s Analysis Not convinced Paper Mario is worth anything, and I just think WoW isn't really that strong. Snake Eater should win this one in a walk, especially with that newfangled night match thing in full effect. Also dat match pic-- best MGS match pic ever? Maybe! Lopen's prediction: Snake Eater with 57.35% Transience’s Analysis I'm not entirely sure how popular Paper Mario is. That's what this match is about more than anything else -- just how legit were the PM games that did so well? I'd probably peg them a little bit above Golden Sun, and not too far apart either. PM finally gets a night match here which is super bad news for it, especially considering how strong MGS3 is at night. I wouldn't take PM over Diablo 2 so I don't expect this to be a fight, but at the same time I think I'd take PM over AC2. Granted those two matches went through MGS4 and not 3 but I don't expect the two to be too far apart statistically. transience's prediction: Metal Gear Solid 3 with 58.42% Kleenex’s Analysis Well, Metal Gear wins. Paper Mario's strength has surprised me thus far (either that or the weakness of its opponents, not sure), but Metal Gear should be on a totally different tier. People might be getting a little sick of Metal Gear, though, as MGS2 managed to prove last round. The fact that it's a night match probably negates any other advantage Paper Mario might have, though. Kleenex's Prediction: Metal Gear Solid 3 with 59.99% Applekidjosh’s Analysis This is funny, because I haven't played the MGS series and I did like Paper Mario but the Paper Marios have thrashed my bracket so hard I'm going to delight in MGS3 killing one of them tonight. So it's impossible to get any kind of stats from any WoW matches, and thrashing Katamari only tells us Katamari is super weak. Can we assume Paper Mario = PM:TYD? Metal Gear Solid 3 vs Paper Mario Something like of the Oracles being made for this one in the last 5 hours have been "MGS3 with 55%", which has me going all HUH? I'm the guy who was in anguish for an hour over whether this series could knock off Oblivion, for heaven's sakes- no one is supposed to have more faith in Paper Mario than me, let alone the whole board! So yeah, here's why these super high PM picks are nutzo: * have you seen this match pic? Snake has literally never looked cooler, and that's saying a ton! I do like PM invoking the Mario 3ish look, and being colorful is a plus, but I still don't think it matches up at all * let's not forget that the SotC performance was a Day Match, MGS's poison. Europe and Asia aren't crazy about Paper Mario like they are Diablo; even if it gets off to a bad start, Snake should kill the percentage during the dead hours * MGS is trending down, sure, but I still say that 64% on MvC2 is nothing to scoff at after the way fighting games have continued to do well all season And something else as well that I forget... anyways, holding to under 56% would really wow me here, I don't think Paper Mario is up to it! Crew Predictions - 97/108 What Happened: RE4 and Portal win Why it Happened: RE4 did as expected against P4, a game that escaped a weak four-pack. Then, despite not impressing in Rounds 1 and 2, Mass Effect manages to exit the contest on a high note with a good showing against Portal. Looks like it did have some decent strength after all! Metal Gear Solid 4 vs Shadow of the Colossus Talking about this one during our Show recording this past week, my take was "fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me." And yet... I'm still going to pick against SotC once again, and I'm pretty sure the result isn't going to shame me. I've never been a huge believer in MGS4, as I thought it lucked into perfect situations in both 2009 and its GotY, and although its extreme "uniqueness" makes it one of the decade's toughest outs in a multiway setting it was never going to be a 1v1 superstar. Even so, I've never been able to picture a situation where MGS2 > MGS4 would look like a good idea, and this match is no exception. Now, I DO think that Shadow of the Colossus keeps this one close again- it's got the same North/South American Day Vote advantage, plus I think it does an even better job of dominating this match pic than last round (yo hates these "blurry blob" pics, but I love their sense of scale and epic atmosphere; hard to imagine someone who played the game voting against it! plus this MGS4 pic is just NOT GOOD). But the reason SotC is going to come up short in the second half of this MGS doubleheader is a little thing I like to call SmartVoterFAQs. It had that advantage all to itself against 2, but 4 is a critically acclaimed "masterpiece" and "Game of the Ever" in its own right- sure that train has lost a little steam since its GotY/PS3 Flagship Title early days, but I'm thinking there's still enough of a respect factor to keep it out of any serious danger. West Division: Round 3 - Match 110 – (3) Metal Gear Solid 4 vs. (2) Shadow of the Colossus Moltar’s Analysis Metal Gear Solid 4 Round 1 - 63.49% on Assassin’s Creed Round 2 - 54.88% on Diablo II MGS4 beats a tough competitor in D2. Shadow of the Colossus Round 1 - 69.35% on The Sims Round 2 - 50.04% on Metal Gear Solid 2 Oh man this match. An all day struggle followed by MGS2 blowing it in the end. SotC beating MGS2 threw off one SFF match, but I don’t expect the end result to change here. MGS4 would have beaten MGS2, and I think it’s going to be SotC. It’s clear that GameFAQs likes MGS2 the least out of all the MGS games. 2009 showed that, and this contest shows that. MGS4 is a good amount stronger than MGS2, and I think that will be too much for SotC to handle. Hell, I’d take D2 over SotC. Moltar’s Bracket: MGS4 wins Moltar’s Prediction: MGS4 - 56% Lopen’s Analysis Really tough match for me to call. I've been thinking MGS2 is stronger indirectly than MGS4 in 1v1 matches since the bracket came out. Sure, it had a kinda mixed reaction but it was on a much bigger system which to me makes up for that discrepancy and then some. But MGS2 actually losing to SotC... it's making me doubt that's true. For no other reason than "MGS2 actually lost that!" Thing is, I'm not really sure that counts as an argument... for as much as "burned bracket syndrome" is popular, there's something to be said for "wow you suck syndrome" too. I think the latter is more of a problem for me than the former, in general... I mean, if the discrepancy in guru points vs my Crew points proves anything it's that I'm not afraid to bail on my bracket this year. Well whatever, I'm going with SotC. No real reason to doubt my instinct of MGS2 > MGS4 here that didn't exist before, I don't think. And if nothing else, SotC has momentum in its corner, something I thought was possible for Diablo 2 of all things to capture to sweep this overly Metal Gear'd division cause yeah I did expect people to anti-vote it to some extent given the saturation. To further cement my good feelings SotC showed it's better at being Metal Gear than Metal Gear itself last round... if you get what I mean... nudge nudge... get it get it heh heh... too much? Yeah, SotC gonna win, much to the chagrin of people with taste~ Lopen's prediction: Shadow of the BAD GAME with 50.17% Transience’s Analysis There's something exciting about this match. On paper, it's a clear case - MGS4 beats MGS2 while SOTC needed a last second miracle update to beat MGS2. But we're talking about a series that has underwhelmed in every match it's been in and SOTC being the only game that's stood up to it so far. SOTC probably doesn't win and it shouldn't even compete, but if there's a bandwagon rolling behind it, this could be a fun one. transience's prediction: Metal Gear Solid 4 with 56.35% Kleenex’s Analysis You have no idea how bad I want to pull the trigger on this. I really think MGS4 is a bit too much stronger than MGS2 to make this upset any kinds of viable, but if SotC can pull some crazy bandwagon stuff (lord knows MGS deserves to see how it feels) it could happen. I would love to see SotC go on some crazy StarCraft-esque run, but I don't think it has the fanbase to pull it off. Prove me wrong, SotC fans! West Division Round 3 (1) Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (5) Paper Mario The question here is not who’s going to win this match, obviously. Snake Eater’s going to win it easily. The question is how much is it going to get, and how much does it need to get to look like the favorite going into that epic showdown with MGS4 (barring some weird SOTC “ElitistFAQs” bandwagon, which is a better name for it than the “SmartVoterFAQs” label Ngamer has given it!). I’m not really sure. I’d take Paper Mario over NSMBWii (and thus over MvC2 as well), and MGS3 got nearly 64% on MvC2 last round. I’d say anything over 60% would be good for MGS3 here. Oblivion managed 56-57% on TTYD. We know MGS3 is stronger than Oblivion, and I think PM1 is probably stronger than TTYD, so yeah. If it gets close to that MGS4/Diablo 2 percentage though, that would spell big trouble for it because I don’t think THAT highly of Paper Mario. I suppose we won’t really get a good idea until we see what MGS4 does against SotC, but MGS3’s got a chance to prove itself here and needs to take advantage of it. Leonhart’s Embarrassing Confession of the Match: I actually liked the Cobra Unit. They were certainly better than Dead Cell and the B&B Corps, at any rate! Leonhart’s Vote: Metal Gear Solid 3. Leonhart’s Prediction: Metal Gear Solid 3 with 61.35% West Division Round 3 (3) Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (2) Shadow of the Colossus First of all, I want to say how lucky Sir Chris is that SOTC actually pulled off the upset over MGS2 so he doesn’t owe me his sig for a month! Secondly, that was an impressive win for SOTC against an established franchise, especially one that’s renowned for pulling out last-minute wins in that fashion. However, this is the end of the line. I’ve heard people talk about SOTC getting some sort of bandwagon or something, but it had decent bracket support and was even a slight favorite in the Battle Challenge, so I don’t think the general population was as surprised by the result as we were. While MGS4 didn’t have a great showing against Diablo 2 last round, it can prove that the match said more about D2’s strength than MGS4’s weakness with a solid win over SOTC. While you can certainly say that SOTC won because MGS2’s not a really strong game itself, the game isn’t fodder, so SOTC does have a decent amount of strength. SOTC may be performing over its head if you’re a believer in “SmartVoterFAQs” (or “ElitistFAQs,” as I like to call it) though, but either way, it’s legit. A good win here for MGS4 would get it back on track for that showdown with MGS3. I’d say it needs high-50s here, at least. If it can get anywhere near MGS3’s percentage on Paper Mario, I think that would be really good for it. Maybe I’m underestimating Paper Mario, but I don’t think it’d beat SOTC or MGS2.
