Southeast Division: Round 3 - Match 104 – (6) Kingdom Hearts II vs. (2) Kingdom Hearts Moltar’s Analysis Kingdom Hearts II Round 1 - 63.81% on Halo 2 Round 2 - 56.27% on Bioshock KH2 with an unimpressive showing against Bioshock Kingdom Hearts Round 1 - 76.90% on Castlevania: DoS Round 2 - 66.31% on Modern Warfare 2 The original, on the other hand, does impress. So I have KH2 in my bracket, not really sure why. I feel this is a complete toss-up match, but here was my justification for picking KH2. KH1 came and went here on GameFAQs. We didn’t really care for it. Just look at how Sora did in his early contest appearances. Then, as soon as 2006 hit and KH2 came out, the game exploded onto GameFAQs. Sora was beasting, Riku was beasting, even freakin’ Kairi won a match. KH2 was the game that put the series on the map at GameFAQs. Fast-forward to today. These days, both KH games look very strong in their matches. Indirectly, KH1 and KH2 look pretty much even. Now we have to predict how they end up looking directly and I’m still unsure of who to favor here. Based on what we’ve been seeing, I would say KH is the very, very slight favorite. As we’ve seen several times in this contest, most times the original game is the strongest game in the series. That favors KH1. I also believe that KH1 has looked better than KH2 so far. KH2 beat down Halo 2, but KH1 destroyed Castlevania. KH2 had a bit of trouble with Bioshock, but KH1 wrecked MW2. However, KH did have the advantage of having day matches, so you have to take that into account. Despite KH2 being the game that helped launch the series on GameFAQs, I think that the fanbase slightly prefers the original more. I’d say that’s as safe as you can get when it comes to this match, but honestly I don’t have a clue. Moltar’s Bracket: KH2 wins Moltar’s Prediction: Kingdom Hearts - 51% Lopen’s Analysis LIGHT LIGHT HEARTS LIGHT HEARTS LIGHT LIGHT Well, I have no idea who's going to win this. Matches so far haven't really given much of a hint either way. My logic for this match basically boils down to “if two games in a series are by all other indications equal, the original is going to win” I feel like I'm not giving this match its due, but I just don't know what else to say about it! Let's go Kingdom Hearts 2! Lopen's prediction: Kingdom Hearts with 53.72% Transience’s Analysis I am no Kingdom Hearts fan so I have a hell of a time gauging this match. Here's what I know: - Kingdom Hearts is the first game, which is a major factor. People tend to like the originator more than the sequel that improves things slightly. It sold better, its FAQs get more hits than KH2 and it leans more towards the Disney side of things. - KH2 is a flawed sequel but is more up GameFAQs' alley - it leans to the Square side of things, from the convoluted plot to the darker atmosphere to original Square characters. Sora went from midcarder to near-elite thanks to this game (supposedly, he's actually likable). It's got a flashier battle system and doesn't have the awful Gummi Ship stuff, but Real Fans seem to think its combat is dumbed down thanks to reaction commands or whatever. Who cares. These two games seem almost equal stat-wise. KH1 got 66% on a pathetic MW2 (see: Melee's 69% on COD4 the other day) while KH2 only got 55% on the up-and-coming Bioshock. In fourways, KH1 got 47% on FFX in a match nobody trusts, and then 61.4% on Vice City - RE4 got 65% this year. KH2 had a slightly better performance, getting 49.5% on RE4 in round 1 and 48% on TP in round 2. This probably doesn't matter, I'm just showing that they were equal-ish. |
I'm
gonna pick here KH2 here for two reasons: one, because I trust the
Square side of this site more than the Disney one, and two, because I
think Moltar will pick KH1 and we've had the same picks for like 50
matches in a row. Time to break that tie. KH1 should be the favourite
based on the fact that it came first and sold better, but whatever. transience's prediction: Kingdom Hearts II with 50.42% Leon’s Analysis Man, I’m still not sure what to think about this match. I know people seem to be favoring KH1 pretty much across the board at this point, but…I’m still not sure. KH1 got to face two weak games in favorable situations, and so it’s had the opportunity to look better. KH2 had to face BioShock at night, and really, 57% isn’t all that bad. We saw Big Daddy outperform Gordon Freeman last contest, so I’m a believer in BioShock’s strength. Plus, it did manage 64% on Halo 2, which I think is every bit as good as the 66% KH1 put up on MW2, honestly. So really, I still see this match as a tossup. I don’t think either game has an advantage that I can really see, and I have no idea which way the fanbase leans on this one. KH1 is the “safe” choice, in my opinion (and what I went with in my bracket), but KH2’s chances of winning aren’t really much less than 50/50. Remember, Sora really didn’t become that strong until KH2 hit. That’s not a coincidence (although part of it is that Sora actually becomes LIKEABLE and somewhat cool in KH2, but whatever). So in the end, this match is essentially impossible to analyze. I think there’s a decent chance that this one could actually end up close because I don’t think the fanbase really clearly prefers one over the other. I haven’t seen any indication whatsoever that they do. I don’t know how anyone could feel confident about it. Well, whatever, I expect everyone else on the Crew to side with KH1, so I’ll just throw my support behind KH2 for the heck of it. I’d rather it win anyway! Leonhart’s Embarrassing Confession of the Match: Demyx is totally the best member of Organization XIII. DANCE WATER DANCE Leonhart’s Vote: Kingdom Hearts II. Leonhart’s Prediction: Kingdom Hearts II with 50.50% Kleenex’s Analysis The first of the potential inter-series matches that Bacon had set up in this bracket. This one hasn't really gotten all that much talk, I think, probably because it's almost impossible to tell which way the match is going to go. Indirectly, KH1 and KH2 have always been pretty darn close, and nothing that's happened this year has tilted the favor in one direction or the other. It's just going to come down to which game the fanbase prefers more. I have KH2 in my bracket (over Modern Warfare whoops), but I'm actually feeling the original today. Not for any particular reason. I do think that this match will probably be pretty boring, regardless of who wins. Probably a 53/47 type affair. So yeah, gonna go with the original game, and if I get it wrong I'll tell Moltar that I mistyped and meant to add a 2 after it. Kleenex's Prediction: Kingdom Hearts with 52.88% Applekidjosh’s Analysis this match. This ****in match. There's literally no way to be sure, it's an absolute ball buster. Kingdom Hearts: came first gets less flak for being ridiculous Kingdom Hearts 2: better gameplay more involved story and cameos I've got KH2 in my bracket, and I really hope it wins, but I've been feeling KH for awhile now. South Division: Round 3 - Match 105 – (1) Final Fantasy X vs. (5) Golden Sun Moltar’s Analysis Final Fantasy X Round 1 - 77.46% on Viewtiful Joe Round 2 - 70.83% on Borderlands FFX really doesn’t want to win this contest Golden Sun Round 1 - 68.24% on Ratchet and Clank: UYA Round 2 - 53.69% on Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Golden Sun with a Golden upset Golden Sun looking great, FFX looking not so great, this should be a decent showing for GS. It’s not going to win or anything, but if it can keep FFX in the low 60s, that would be pretty impressive. Breaking 40% would really be something. Moltar’s Bracket: FFX wins Moltar’s Prediction: FFX - 63% Lopen’s Analysis Easy mode. Final Fantasy winz Lopen's prediction: Final Fantasy X with 63.66% Transience’s Analysis We finally get a real chance to gauge FFX here. Borderlands and Viewtiful Joe could be anywhere, but Golden Sun has cemented itself by putting 53% on GTA. We know what GTA is worth for the most part. FFX will be doing awesome if it doubles GS here. I have a hard time giving GS much credit here. I think it's a decently strong Nintendo RPG a la Paper Mario or TOS, but at the same time, I can't see too many people siding with it over the 'real' RPG in FFX. The main thing FFX struggles with is that there's a contingent of this site that will never like RPGs so they vote for the opponent. There's no such option here. Stats probably predict a 62-38 or 63-37 win here. I'm gonna go a little higher. Call it RPG SFF if you want - I think of it more as Golden Sun facing a game people actually like. transience's prediction: Final Fantasy X with 64.64% Leon’s Analysis I’m not really sure what to make of this match. Yeah, Golden Sun proved it has some strength around here by beating San Andreas handily, but it’s an RPG going up against the strongest RPG in the contest. Yeah, I know it’s a Nintendo RPG, but part of me wonders if a high FFX number here would be legit or not. Eh, there probably won’t be much of any SFF in this one. Either way, I’m not sure what a good number for FFX would be here. 70% is out of the realm of “reasonable” sans some weird RPG SFF since I don’t think Golden Sun or San Andreas would lose to Borderlands. That’d be a pretty awesome performance if FFX did manage that though! I guess mid-60s would be about right here. Let’s go with that. Leonhart’s Embarrassing Confession of the Match: Darn it, I actually like the Laughing Scene! And J.A. Taylor did a good job as Tidus’s voice actor! Leonhart’s Prediction: Final Fantasy X with 64.44% Kleenex’s Analysis Golden Sun has done well for itself to get this far - the game's legit, and now that people are going to stop underestimating it, it means that Isaac will probably tank next year or something. Anyway, this could be a fun match if FFX decides to flop all over the place, and it might. You'd think that two jRPGs released in the same year would probably cause some major SFF, but the fanbases are likely about as different as they could be given those facts. So yeah, maybe FFX drops the ball, but Golden Sun can't win this. Might look respectable though. Crew Predictions - 93/104 What Happened: Zelda beats Mario and sequel > original Why it Happened: TP was stronger than Galaxy, and proved that with a Link/Mario-esque beatdown on Galaxy. Then, in a match that started off dead even, the ASV allowed for KH2 to beat the original. KH2 making all the KH characters relevant on GameFAQs was no fluke indeed. What will Happen: TP/KH2 is a match we've seen before, but it should still be a close one. South Division: Round 3 - Match 106 – (3) Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic vs. (2) Final Fantasy IX Moltar’s Analysis Star Wars KOTOR Round 1 - 58.05% on Devil May Cry Round 2 - 60.63% on Fire Emblem KOTOR looking fine Final Fantasy IX Round 1 - 75.19% on Phoenix Wright 3 Round 2 - 68.87% on Persona 3 Will FF9 go 3 for 3? (get it) This should be easy enough. KOTOR is a game with decent strength, but FF9 looks to be one step ahead. This is also a day match, which would help out pretty much any game in the contest against FF9. I expect KOTOR to look alright, but I don’t see it pulling off the upset. Moltar’s Bracket: FFIX wins Moltar’s Prediction: FFIX - 55% Lopen’s Analysis Easy mode. Final Fantasy winz Okay not quite as easy. I think KotoR is gonna look good mostly cause I'm not 100% convinced on FFIX being too legit... thing didn't do all that great against the two fodders it fought earlier in the contest, and everyone not named Vivi from that game is a joke. IX should still win but maybe some people will get scared for a bit. Lopen's prediction: Final Fantasy IX with 53.66% Transience’s Analysis We ***finally*** get to see FF9 in action for real. This game has been screwed so many times and has had crap opponents so far this year. Now it gets something proven in KOTOR, and not only that, it's got a major disadvantage getting a day match vs. an Xbox game. KOTOR has done well for itself - 60% on Fire Emblem, 57% on Devil May Cry. That's pretty good. It's definitely legit. There's some concern here that FF9 is this hoax propped up by the Final Fantasy name. FF9 has never shown the strength of an FF8 or an FF10. It probably doesn't lose here, but I could see KOTOR making a run at it. If FF9 can push 60% here then I'll conclude that it's a strong game obscured by getting the worst possible opponents.
