Hey everyone, it’s Contest time again! You know what that means! The Contest Analysis Crew is back once again! Our goal is to go through this entire contest to determine the GameFAQs Game of the Decade. We will analyze and predict each match, and of course, you will read the write-ups and laugh at us when we’re wrong. So without further ado, here’s the Introducti- ... Wait...I’m getting word that...an Introduction isn’t in our budget this contest? What do you mean I used everything up for Character Battle 8 earlier this year?! I can’t have a Crew topic without an introduction! ... Oh, so I can have an introduction, but it has to be short?...Hmm, I think I’ve- ???: Whoa, whoa, whoa, alright Master Moltar, enough is enough. Moltar: Well, if it isn’t Lopen! What’s going on? I’m trying to do the Introduction here. Lopen: Yeah, about that. I know before you were kind of pressed for time, but I think it’s about time you properly introduced the Crew. Moltar: Eh, what’s wrong with the old Introduction? Lopen: I think I’ll let Transience explain. Tran: See, we’re supposed to be a serious group of GameFAQs Contest analysts, and our Introduction has just been...pictures of asses. Moltar: What’s wrong with asses? Everybody loves asses, right Kleenex? Kleenex: That’s right! Lopen: That isn’t the point! We need a legitimate introduction! Moltar: Fine fine, Leonhart, you got something for me? Leon: How about a FF8 Introduction. Moltar: Nah, not a gaming introduction. That wouldn’t make any sense for the context of this contest. Leon: But it’s a Game of the Dec- Kleenex: How about pictures of boobs? Moltar: That....that may work. Lopen: That’s not any better than ass pictures! Applekidjosh, please talk with Moltar here and suggest a reasonable topic for an Introduction. AKJ: .............................Feet pictures? Lopen: Don’t encourage him! Moltar: Listen, we could argue about what kind of pictures we need to use, but we need to get some sort of Introduction done. I mean, the Guests would be angry if there were no intros. Fallout 3 74.27% 26595 Deus Ex 25.73% 9212 TOTAL VOTES 35807 Batman: Arkham Asylum 59.52% 31144 Team Fortress 2 40.48% 21180 TOTAL VOTES 52324 Crew Predictions - 58/66 What Happened: Fallout has a good performance against Deus Ex and Batman does well against TF2. Why it Happened: RB/Deus Ex was weak, and Fallout spanked it because it's not weak. Batman is also pretty legit, as Fable/TF2 are probably decent. Halo 1 vs Halo 3 I've seen some folks attempting to hype up a Halo 3 upset in this intraseries matchup, an idea which frankly never even crossed my mind when filling out my bracket. (Let's forgot for a minute that I eventually talked myself into Sunshine topping both of them.) The situation that presents itself tomorrow is all too familiar to me, as I've been through this same argument roughly 1000 times at the other community I frequent, The Elite. For you see, even though millions of people love Perfect Dark and/or the Timesplitters series, 90% of those fans got their start with Goldeneye. And even though the later games added all kinds of new features and improvements (bots in multi, fun new weapons, increased customization, better graphics, new multiplayer types, more levels, online play through Live), 65% of that shared fanbase is always going to prefer GE over anything that came after it. Now you've got millions upon millions of gamers who have played and enjoyed Halo 2/3/ODST/Reach, but again, don't you think Halo 1 was the groundbreaking, "revolutionary," nostalgia-tinted first experience for 90% of that base? I sure do! And that's why its not going to matter that the later games added online multi and achievements and improved graphics and cool new weapons; like Ocarina and FF7 keep proving, in the end the majority is going to side with their "first love". Especially in a GotD setting like this, where the focus on innovation/trailblazing/industry importance is even tighter than usual! So I'll go ahead and rip off the percentage from a massively overhyped SFF-beatdown that took place back in 2005: Mario > Samus. (But feel free to prove me wrong, Halo 3- my Sunshine loving bracket would sure appreciate it!) North Division: Round 2 - Match 68 – (7) Halo 3 vs. (2) Halo: Combat Evolved Moltar’s Analysis Halo 3 Round 1 - 52.53% on Super Mario Sunshine Poor Sunshine, more hated than Halo. Halo Round 1 - 64.45% on Ninja Gaiden suck it hayabusa Now that the contest is over half-way over, I’ve seen a trend. People love the originals. In pretty much every case, the original game in a series as performed as well as, if not, out-performed the sequel. Why? This is probably because lots of people tried out the original. If they liked it, they most likely moved on to the sequel. If they didn’t, then that was that. The original game usually has a larger crowd to draw from, so it usually ends up looking better. This isn’t always the case, but it happens enough. So let’s transfer that over to Halo. Halo has a broader audience to pull from than Halo 3 and GameFAQs seemed to like the original Halo more that Halo 3 (see: every poll Halo 3 has been in). Simply put, this match is about the Halo fanbase. Do they like 1 more or do they like 3 more? I’m guessing the original since that put the series on the map and gets respeck. Moltar’s Bracket: Sunshine wins (lol) Moltar’s Prediction: Halo - 60% Lopen’s Analysis GAME FUEL BELIEVE INVINCIBLE GAME FUEL INVINCIBLE GAME BELIEVE HALO FUEL COMBAT EVOLVED HALOMANIA RUNNIN WILD BROTHER MASTER CHIEF DAY VOTE MICROSOFT WAR MACHINE I NEED A WEAPON GAME FUEL. FINISH THE FIGHT. Lopen's prediction: Halo: Combat Evolved with 67.56% Transience’s Analysis This match seems really straightforward to me. Consider three points: 1.) Halo 1 is revered for being the first massive 'modern' console shooter. It's the game that started it all. Halo 3 is a game that refined the formula, but didn't have nearly the impact that the original could. It'd be like Ocarina of Time vs. Twilight Princess or something, only on a much lesser scale. 2.) Halo 1 is liked more for its single-player mode and atmosphere while Halo 3 is all about its online multiplayer and game modes. This is a site that is all about single-player campaigns and does not give a crap about online multiplayer. 3.) Master Chief's strongest year was 2007 when Halo 3 was being hyped. Why was it hyped? Halo 1 and 2. What happened immediately after its release? Halo 3 lost bad to Call of Duty 4 and the series has not been relevant since. Halo 3 really flopped on this site. The two games probably aren't far apart strength-wise, but put them together? Halo 1 should romp. transience's prediction: Halo: Combat Evolved with 62.49% Leon’s Analysis This is the first of many toss-up same-series matches in the contest. While I like the fact that Bacon set up a lot of these in the contest because they’re difficult to predict, they’re even harder to analyze. It’s hard to tell which game the fanbase prefers in a situation like this, and previous matches don’t always give us a good idea of how these will play it. Halo 1 put up 65% on Ninja Gaiden last round, but I think that just means NG is weak (which I figured would be the case pre-contest). Halo 3 won a close match that was never really in doubt against Mario Sunshine. I think Sunshine would beat Ninja Gaiden pretty handily, too, so I think their round 1 performances are basically even. In the end, it comes down to which game you think the fanbase prefers. Halo 1 was the original, and I think there’s a lot of nostalgia attached to it as a result. Even though this site was never big on the original Xbox, Halo 1 was one of those games just about everybody played because you probably at least had a friend who had this game, so I don’t really think play rate is an issue here. |
But
still, Halo 3 is one of the biggest games on the 360, which GameFAQs
has embraced more than the original Xbox (As an aside, I love how my
spell checker recognizes Xbox but not Playstation or Gamecube, bias
ahoy!). From a technical standpoint, Halo 3 would be considered the
“best” game in the series, I think. Plus, it’s still huge on Xbox Live,
but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything. Nostalgia is a powerful
thing sometimes, and that’s what I’m siding with here. Leonhart’s Embarrassing Confession of the Match: The only games I’ve ever played online are Brawl and Street Fighter IV. Leonhart’s Vote: Halo 1. Leonhart’s Prediction: Halo 1 with 52.62% Kleenex’s Analysis Halo wins. lololololol Seriously though, I don't see any way for Halo 3 to win this. Kleenex's Prediction: Halo: Combat EVOLVED with 60.01% Applekidjosh’s Analysis It's finally time for the first of many interseries matchups! Unfortunately we can't see one and expect a trend for the others necessarily, since people are taking the "game of the decade" thing seriously enough. But that actually works in our favor here - Halo 3 doesn't have a chance! While nothing's certain and I could still end up surprised, I'm pretty confident Halo 1 will get a comfortable victory here. It's just the more respected game, and that means a lot here. AKJ says Halo 1 > Halo 3 with 61% Guest’s Analysis - PaulG235 And thus begins the series of SFF matches... This was a good bracket this year, but it had one big flaw. Due to "Wanting variety in the final rounds", we ended having divisions of games from the same series, with the result eventually leading to many SFF matches highly likely to happen. Let's count them, shall we? - Halo 3/Halo - Galaxy/TP - KH2/KH - MGS4/MGS2 - Melee/Brawl - FFX/FFIX - MGS3/MGS4 - MM/WW (GSC will likely stop this match from happening, though you can pretty much replace MM with it) That's about 8 of them, most of them happening R3 and later. You could even count the Melee/Brawl winner vs TP, if you want. Only a couple of those matchups should happen in this contest, Melee/Brawl and MGS3/MGS4. The bracket probably would still have a lot of variety come the final rounds if you mixed the rest of the games up since some of those games aren't even that strong. Anyway, Halo 3/Halo is the first of these matches, and this one is pretty obvious. I seriously don't know why Halo 3's getting some support here, the heirachy for the Halo games should be 1 > 3 > 2. With both being Halo games, the anti-vote shouldn't really matter for either games (the real anti-vote is not voting), so a 60-40 win seems like the best call. (Dammit, why did I go with Sunshine in my bracket?) Prediction - Halo: Combat Evolved - 61.40% Crew Consensus: Halo wins........the first one that is. |

Northeast Division: Round 2 - Match 69 – (1) Metroid Prime vs. (9) Devil May Cry 3 Moltar’s Analysis Halo 3 Round 1 - 73.34% on Star Ocean 3 Good stuff from Prime Halo Round 1 - 64.86% on Mother 3 I still can’t believe this. So after Paper Mario tore it up twice, Prime is looking pretty hot right now. It has a good performance in Round 1, and it should be able to smoke a game that couldn’t even double Mother 3. Plus, KOTOR managed to handle DMC, and Prime > KOTOR while...it’s possible that the original DMC is stronger than 3. Still...can’t go too wild after one good showing from Prime. Fact is that Prime still needs to prove itself, and it could do that here or end up looking as bad as we thought it was. I’ll go in the middle. Moltar’s Bracket: Metroid Prime wins Moltar’s Prediction: Metroid Prime - 65% Lopen’s Analysis I was seriously all ready to hype this one as a victory for DMC3 cause MP lost to Vice City, but then DMC3 goes and gets 65% on Mother 3. I mean what the hell. I've tried to rationalize this one... maybe more people know it's Earthbound or related to Smash than we think. Maybe people joke voted it because of that stupid box art combined with that stupid name. But I just can't do it. When you ask me “hey is Metroid Prime gonna get more than 15% more than friggin Mother 3 did” I can't argue with it. Why is Dante so strong good lord. Well at the very least I can be optimistic and lowball the percentage for no reason... c'mon DMC3! Lopen's prediction: Metroid Prime with 55.55% Transience’s Analysis Here's two overrated games. DMC is the posterchild for a series that's way weaker than you'd think while Metroid Prime has some rather famous bombs itself. Neither of these games are strong and their weakness probably balances each other out. Still, Prime would never get 65% on Mother 3. Prime looked pretty good last round too with a nice win over a fairly notable RPG -- sure, it's not Final Fantasy, but decent selling RPGs don't usually get killed that badly. This could go really badly for DMC3. transience's prediction: Metroid Prime with 65.44% Leon’s Analysis Prime had an impressive first round match, getting a little under a tripling against Star Ocean, while DMC3 had one of the most embarrassing results of round one, not even managing 65% against a game that never released in America. While DMC3 is weak and certainly won’t be beating Prime here, I think a lot of what happened there is us underestimating Mother 3. It’s certainly not the Adventure-level game I was expecting it to be. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still weak, but it’s not the bottom of the barrel fodder I thought it would be. I think it could probably have a good match with Star Ocean and maybe even win. Prime’s probably going to win easily, but I’m not expecting an uber-blowout here. Leonhart’s Embarrassing Confession of the Match: I don’t like playing games out of order, so I don’t know if I’ll ever get around to playing DMC3! Leonhart’s Vote: Metroid Prime. Leonhart’s Prediction: Metroid Prime with 62.07% Kleenex’s Analysis This match is actually fairly interesting. The result isn't in doubt or anything, but I'm going to be very curious to see how well DMC3 manages to do against Prime. Calling last round's performance a disappointment would be the understatement of the contest, but everyone seems to be pretty wary of Prime's real strength, and this is with good reason. Hopefully Metroid flops and Okami beasts so we can get the upset train rollin' again woo woo. Kleenex's Prediction: Metroid Prime with 63.65% |
Applekidjosh’s Analysis crap crap crap I forgot uh Metroid > DMC with 62% Guest’s Analysis - The Real Truth So looking at the vote totals for the first match it had, Metroid/Star Ocean actually received a decent amount of attention. I didn't expect Prime to break 70%, and it did. Young Dante had a day match which had about 10,000 more votes, against Mother 3. Actually..I'm half expecting this match to be what DMC3/Mother 3 was, except in reverse. I'm still a believer in DMC1 > DMC3. DMC1 broke 40%, and received some really bad seeding placement. What I'd actually be more interested in seeing now, is Metroid Prime vs. Knights of the Old Republic. Alright anyway, Devil May Cry 3 can't win this match unfortunately. In a contest with low vote totals, seeding means a lot, and I really wish I had stuck (mostly) with my instinct in this contest. People don't like difficult games, but they do enjoy boring ones. - Weaker game + better seeding - less popular + "better than original" + best boss fights in gaming - Capcom sucks now + night match + similar seeds = Samus > Dante with 57.43% So I lied after comparing stats, etc. I want to go lower, like 56%, but I think I'd be shooting too low. Going over 60% sounds too high. I do believe Knights would take Prime 1 on 1. The only thing that actually has me worried about this pick is how Fusion almost beat Pokemon.
