West Division: Round 1 - Match 56 – (2) Shadow of the Colossus vs. (15) The Sims Moltar’s Analysis SotC climbing monsters or something The Sims real life or something A 2 seed for SotC is pretty surprising. It definitely gets a lot of respect and praise in the gaming world, and it sold well too, but on GameFAQs, it’s nothing more than a midcarder at best. Back in 2009, it was put in the same group as RE4 and KH2 right off the bat, so it never had a chance to do anything, but at least it beat Gears! Meanwhile, The Sims is a massive casual franchise, but GameFAQs cares even less for that. I mean it didn’t even do that good in the weakest vote-in poll. If I didn’t see SotC cleanly beat Gears last year, this may have been a bit more debatable. As it stands now, we know SotC has some strength, we know that loved and respected games are doing well, and we know that massive sales =/= massive popularity on GameFAQs. Percentage-wise, I have no clue how this ends up, but I feel safe going with SotC. Moltar’s Bracket: SotC > The Sims Moltar’s Prediction: SotC - 63% Lopen’s Analysis People actually like SotC on GameFAQs. I'm assuming they're mistaking it for OoT because of all the boring horse riding simulation. I mean sure, Wander does terribly but no one in their right mind gives a crap about him. As your evidence, I point to exhibit A: Heroic Mario. As for the the Sims? No one likes it. No one. This game is even going to get anti-votes on this site, making SotC look like a juggernaut fitting of its seed. Should you believe in it? Well, I wouldn't. Lopen's prediction: Shadow of the Colossus with 81.04% Transience’s Analysis This is a funny match. SOTC is often thought of as a cult game, even though it's not. It's got tons of critical acclaim and sold way better than people realize. (cult games don't get 2 seeds.) That said, it's clearly a niche kind of thing and that stuff does well at night. On the flipside you've got The Sims, one of the ten most noteworthy games of the decade. Despite how well-known it is, it's the antithesis of a strong game here. Casual stuff gets murdered on this website, a site that's 95% male and only has 1 in 20 people call the Wii the best system on the market right now. The Sims is going to get killed. It might pull in votes from people who inexplicably hate SOTC or vote based on knowing one of the names, but this is a game that will get Wii Sports'd. SOTC could put up a big number here, bigger than people realize. transience's prediction: Shadow of the Colossus with 65.42% Leon’s Analysis I’ve heard a few people talking about upset potential here because of how pathetic Wander is in these contests, but it’s like people didn’t pay attention to how well SotC did last contest. It beat Gears of War with ease and got 35% on RE4 and KHII, which is pretty good. Gears of War 2 won the vote-in poll that The Sims was in, by the way. Plus, why in the world do people think The Sims would be popular? Has there ever been any indication of this here? I don’t get that. Kleenex’s Analysis The Sims is huge in "real life". Unfortunately it doesn't have much of a fanbase on this site. Shadow of the Colossus always does strangely well whenever it shows up in a poll, and I really doubt many people care about The Sims. This is going to be fairly lopsided in favor of SotC. Kleenex's Prediction: Shadow of the Colossus with 65.33% Applekidjosh’s Analysis This is hilarious because any other website and The Sims would have a legit shot here. It's got an absolutely ridiculously high player base and sales base, but unfortunately a lot of those are not the demographics that vote in the gamefaqs poll! Shadow of the Colossus though? The exact right demographic! (If you're wondering, "basement dwelling antisocial elitist game nerd" is what I'm talking about) Look at this craziness http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3472 nearly 24,000 people voted for SotC even with juggernaughts KH2 and RE4 in the poll?! It blows my mind. AKJ says Shadow of the Colossus > The Sims with 68.00% Guest’s Analysis - Korayashi This match was an interesting one when I set up the bracket. We have a cult hit PS2 game that is well known for its art and a very casual PC game that has sold millions, but floundered in its vote-in. SotC has been in two polls in the history of this site. The first has it losing to Dragon Quest VIII and being almost doubled by God of War. The second has it again, getting doubled by Resident Evil 4 and Kingdom Hearts 2. So, putting these results into this contest, it's about as strong as Left 4 Dead or Halo II. Great. It may very well be art, but none of these results give me any confidence in this game. Wander doesn't help either, as he's placed last in every character poll he's been in. The Sims is in this contest purely because of nostalgia. Past polls show that no one cares too much about the two sequels or any of the spin-offs, just the original. It's vote-in poll isn't doing itself any favors either, losing to Gears of War II is horrendous after seeing what it did in this contest. It still has a dedicated fanbase that got it into the contest and one that keeps voting for it, as seen in the 2009 PC poll. Both games have their extremely loyal fanbases here on GameFAQs, but I will give the nod to the Sims here. Both games are weak (really, how did SotC get a 2 seed?) and theoretically either game could win this. However, this is an upset I have been predicting since the day the bracket came out, and I'll support it until the end. It will definitely be closer than some people think, at least. wanted to raise my Oracle percentage a little bit but the site was
down. Oh well, just have to rely on this MASSIVE Sims ASV I suppose. Shadow of the Colossus vs The Sims Here's a matchup that had me sweating bullets when I finalized my bracket a couple months back, but where every day since then has made me feel better and better about my choice. This site can barely tolerate "casual" or "family friendly" games on their best day- in a Game of the Decade setting that genre takes a shotgun to the face before it can get out of the starting gate. On any other website it would probably matter that The Sims outsold SotC 10 to 1, but this season voters are valuing innovation and importance and critical acclaim over playrate... in other words, an ideal situation for "Mr. Video Games As Arts" aka Shadow of the Colossus! Despite this being the perfect opportunity, however, I still can't see SotC blowing out anything, let alone this game. Enough of the site has at least tried The Sims to keep it from being killed, and it surprised me by having a stronger base of support than I expected in that play-in poll. Plus there's a small but vocal minority who hates SotC and will anti-vote it regardless of opponent. What's that you say? That's "only Ulti"? Whoops! In summary, expect a "not impressive but still never in doubt" win along the lines of WoW/AC. Northwest Division: Round 1 - Match 57 – (1) The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask vs. (16) Wii Sports Moltar’s Analysis Majora’s Mask best Zelda game Wii Sports killed the video game industry Easy match. MM is Zelda. That’s enough to take out some Wii game, no matter how much MM disappointed back in 2009. People, Nintendo fans in particular, are going to vote for a Zelda over some casual Wii game. Speaking of Wii games, damn does GameFAQs hate the non-Smash or Zelda ones. Sales mean nothing too, just look at The Sims. Wii Sports is going to get killed here. Moltar’s Bracket: Zelda: MM > Wii Sports Moltar’s Prediction: Zelda: MM - 80% Lopen’s Analysis Wii should get a good idea of how strong Majora is gonna be from this one. I'm pretty skeptical it's at all worthy of it's #1 seed. In the blue corner, Wii Sports has a great playrate, but who cares about it really. Majora Mask should take virtually every vote from those who have played both, and might take some just because it's Zelda. But I guess anti-votes are a problem too... so let's say the Zelda name factor here is a push. Wii would like to anti-vote. (he really did just do that twice) Let's go Wii Sports! Lopen's prediction: Majora's Mask with 72.38% Transience’s Analysis This match is going to convince people that Majora's Mask is a mammoth. It's going to be misguided though. Just about nobody on this website is going to vote for Wii Sports. It's up against a strong Nintendo title and it's the posterchild for everything that people don't like about the Wii. Majora's Mask might not be a super huge game, but it's got the Zelda name on it and is well-known. It'll have no trouble dispatching Wii Sports. transience's prediction: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask with 84.36% Leon’s Analysis Man, I wish Wii Sports had gotten something that could’ve really SFF’d it into the ground, like Brawl or Twilight Princess. I mean, Majora’s Mask is still gonna whoop it pretty bad, but it could’ve been worse. I’ll actually be kinda interested to see what kind of percentage Wii Sports can get in a 1-on-1 match against a mainline Zelda. Other than that, this match really isn’t interesting to me. It doesn’t matter how high Majora’s Mask goes here because it’s just an SFF match. If it somehow struggles, its chances of beating G/S/C later on will take a hit. Kleenex’s Analysis Wii Sports gonna dominate. Not really. Majora's Mask is a bit of an enigma. It's not the most popular game in the series and generally seems to be love it or hate it. The number of people I've seen who are ambivalent to the game are very few. But it's probably the closest thing to Ocarina of Time in the bracket. I wonder if the OoT fans will cling to it moreso than they normally would. Certainly it's probably going to lay a beatdown on Wii Sports because Wii Sports is Wii Sports. Sadly, this won't be such a great read, but hey, you take what you can get. Kleenex's Prediction: Majora's Mask with 70.34% Applekidjosh’s Analysis Man, coming out of a division where my bracket took three hits I'm glad every match here is pretty much a lock. Today is the obvious slaughtering that Zelda can give to... who honestly nominated Wii Sports? I imagine it was joke nominations combined with a couple people that took "game of the decade" seriously and nominated things that were influential instead of just their favorites? Even though Majora's Mask isn't THAT strong, it's going to look like a contest champ right here. It did pretty badly in its vote-ins, too, but not enough to actually miss the contest. If this match was taking place only Japan, maybe Wii Sports would do decently (why do they like it so much!?), but in the whole wide world, Majora’s Mask is pretty loved. It might not be the most liked Zelda game but it’s up there. However I think it’s going to find a way to disappoint. By ’ disappoint ’ I mean getting less than 80% in this poll. After all, Wii Sports is the BEST SELLING GAME OF ALL TIME.... of ALL TIME. Take that, Taylor Swift. Majora's Mask vs Wii Sports After New Mario's shocking performance a couple days back I heard Carvey hypothesizing that the word "Wii" is now the #1 anti-vote magnet on this site. Between WoW winning a match, Halo/GTA not getting blasted as badly as in the past, and the MvC2 match combined with the last GotY poll, it's hard to argue against him! Meanwhile there's never been a bigger "pro-vote magnet" in GameFAQs history than the word "Zelda", and with TP already having performed respectably and older Nintendo consistently outperforming the company's more recent offerings... well, you may rest assured this one is going to get ugly. Wii Sports' one claim to strength is having sold 70 million copies worldwide (pack ins included) and being the game with (by far) the highest playrate of any in this bracket. But if anyone is putting stock in that mattering at all after seeing what happened to New Mario and The Sims and Rock Band, they're going to need to have their head examined. All that playrate doesn't matter a bit when everyone knows you're a total joke in terms of "Game of the Decade" contender; I can't see any way this title manages 20% of the vote in this one, especially not after its awful showing in the play-in. 2nd biggest blowout of the season, here we come!
