Resident Evil 4 82.15% 31896 Jet Grind Radio 17.85% 6929 TOTAL VOTES 38825 Grand Theft Auto: Vice City 63.57% 30560 Silent Hill 2 36.43% 17516 TOTAL VOTES 48076 Crew Predictions - 35/42 What Happened: RE4 puts up big numbers on JGR, and Vice City does decently on SH2 Why it Happened: JGR is fodder, and RE4 showed that. As for the other match, GTA once again shows it's nothing to be feared, as Silent Hill manages to look good against it. Southwest Division: Round 1 - Match 44 – (4) Persona 4 vs. (13) Braid Moltar’s Analysis Persona 4 Reach out to the Truth.....below...in the analysis Braid tie physics time You know before in those matches were it’s between two weak games and neither deserve to win and then one gets beaten easily and it looks bad so then it gets compared to other games like ‘well at least it could beat that game’? Braid is that game. (also I’m not even sure if the above scenario happens) It’s a very small downloadable game that 10 people played and loved. Persona 4 won’t have any problems here considering that game actually hung with SFIV (remember when that used to be a bad thing?) and I know at least 15 people played it. P3 beating Civ shows that the Persona name does have some strength on this site. Moltar’s Bracket: Persona 4 > Braid Moltar’s Prediction: Persona 4 - 65% Lopen’s Analysis Persona 4, weak as it probably is, actually came really really close to beating Street Fighter IV last year, a game I'd easily put ahead of the DLC exclusive Braid. P4 stormed the PS2 GotY some year too, scoring 40% on a bunch of garbage. Granted, it's a bunch of garbage, but I couldn't see Braid scoring 40% on anything. I mean he look like Mario from the future, but I don't think that can save him. Lopen's prediction: Persona 4 with 58.94% Transience’s Analysis I don't care how good of a game Braid is. It's 1.) a downloadable game, 2.) a new IP and 3.) a genre GameFAQs isn't crazy about. Persona may be niche, but Braid might be even niche-er on this site. Persona 3 just showed us it was at least not completely awful by beating Civ 4. P4 is probably about as strong or stronger.. plus it did manage to win that PS2 GOTY poll easily. Was it one of the weakest GOTY polls ever? Yep. But it still showed it had the name recognition to get a majority of the votes. Braid loses polls to pretty much everything. Going multiplatform helps, but not enough. Braid's only advantage here is that this is a day match. And even that is sketchy. transience's prediction: Persona 4 with 61.01% Leon’s Analysis Man, what a match this is. Braid is lucky that Mother 3 is in this contest because that’s probably the only game in this bracket that’ll finish lower in the final stats. Downloadable games just aren’t going to do well here. Braid barely did better than World of Goo in two GOTY polls. World of Goo lost to Shadow Hearts 2 in the vote-ins. That should give you a good idea of how strong Braid is. Persona 4 nearly beat SFIV, which should be more than enough to win this match. I’m interested to see how many votes this match gets, especially with how much lower vote totals have been in this contest. How low can you go?! Leonhart’s Embarrassing Confession of the Match: I have never purchased a downloadable game. Leonhart’s Vote: Braid, because why not? Leonhart’s Prediction: Persona 4 with 64.11% Applekidjosh’s Analysis Oh man this game. Guest’s Analysis - Biolizard P4 will dominate. Let’s get that straight right off. Persona 4 may have sucked in BGE2 (And remains my number 1 reason for supporting that voting in these contests should require prerequisites ), but there are two things you need to ask yourself: Could Braid have beaten Civ 4, and is Persona 3 weaker than Persona 4? Braid is a downloadable game by and indie developer, which is a double whammy of “Who gives a rat’s ass?” That said, Braid also has exposure on its side. It’s one of the first three games brought up in every silly art and gaming debate, alongside “It looks like a painting, so it’s art” Okami and Shadow of the “If it’s boring and brown it must be art” Colossus. Civ IV is an established PC series that actually saw a major release not too long ago, and Civ IV love is more than flavor of the month. But all of this is, frankly, irrelevant, since even if Braid was stronger, P4 still has every reason to kill it. Persona 4 outsold every iteration of Persona 3, and total sales worldwide saw P4 coming up .10m shy of outselling every version of Persona 3 combined. While sales certainly don’t equate to power, it certainly matters more for smaller games with a dedicated fanbase. Critically, it’s almost universally praised as better than Persona 3 and one of the best RPGs in recent memory. For a niche RPG, Persona 4 made out like a bandit in every respect. Persona 3’s performance did a lot in the way of earning the series a bit more respect than it was given, but even more importantly, it gave us a taste of where its strength comes from. P3 dominated in Asia and South America, eeked out victories in Europe and Oceania, and won by an even smaller margin in North America, still losing in the US. Persona 4 is far more popular with the fanbase in North America and had a bigger release in PAL regions. Persona 4’s got nowhere to go but up. Bio’s bracket: Persona 4 Prediction: Persona 4 with 66% Crew Consensus: Persona 4 with the easy win. |
Whoops, forgot to send this last night. Kleenex's Analysis After seeing Persona 3 beat Civ 4 without too much trouble, it seems like a no-brainer that Persona 4 wins this match. Braid is almost assuredly weaker than Civ - we already saw Tim get completely wrecked, and the game itself was more than doubled by Mega Man 9, a game which is probably fairly weak itself. Now, I know a lot of people seem to think that Persona 4 is stronger than 3, but I don't really buy that. 3 has had 3 different releases over the past 3 years, so it almost assuredly has more exposure. The two games probably don't differ that much, but in a head-to-head matchup, I'm pretty sure I'd side with Persona 3. That being said, Braid is just too weak to win this match. Persona 4 vs Braid So yeah, Braid is an awesome game and I was thrilled to see it placed in a semi-winnable position when this bracket was released. I'm also really pleased that we've already seen a download-only game win a matchup on this site, something I thought wasn't going to happen for years. (Wave of the future, people!) Trouble is, we had to swap out the "semi" for "un" after Civilization was unable to keep up with this series a few days back. Not that P3 looked like a world beater or anything, and truth be told I'm not even sure it wins that poll in a Day Match like we're seeing today... but naaaaay, still can't see something as niche as Braid being able to keep up. Should keep it close though, since I'd imagine there's a huge chunk of this site looking to antivote this series.
