Really? I thought Advance Wars was a well-respected game. We really
don't have any past results to fall back on. Obviously GSC is going to
win, but I could see it being as high as 77% or as low as 60%. (The same
could not be said of its characters, who would almost certainly be at
least doubled by almost anything they faced, and would struggle to get

The
other thing that makes this match bothersome: Two handheld games. I
know that the conventional wisdom is that console > handheld, which I
personally think is crap, but... ...yeah, I'm starting to think I really screwed up my prediction percentage on that one. Especially because my theory about handhelds not being as weak as most people think is largely based on the strength that Pokemon has shown in the past, although that awesome result from Link's Awakening in 2009 also helps solidify my case. Southwest Division: Round 1 - Match 43 – (5) The World Ends With You vs. (12) Dead Rising Moltar’s Analysis TWEWY Another JRPG Dead Rising Another casual game Along with the Halo fourpack, this was the thing that gave me the most trouble in bracket-making early on. Yet again, it’s a battle between two weak games. Yet again, it’s a battle between a JRPG that GameFAQs likes and a more casual and well-known game. Based on what we’ve seen happen so far in this contest, I would say that TWEWY is the safe pick here. Even though the matches are close, GameFAQs tends to go with the game that is more geared towards the RPG-slant that the site has over the more ‘popular’ game. It’s hard to say whether or not TWEWY will be as strong as the other games that have won with narrow victories. It’s a hand-held JRPG, and the main character of the game is weaker than Laharl. That alone puts TWEWY in a worse position than most of the other JRPGs we’ve seen. Still, Dead Rising also isn’t as big as the other casual games...and...actually it’s looked fairly okay in older polls. GameFAQs also doesn’t really hate the game either... Actually the more I think about it, the better Dead Rising looks. I feel that if I continue, I would just have to try and justify why TWEWY won’t fail as opposed to why it’s stronger. Dead Rising looks decent enough, but the best thing TWEWY has going for it is prior results, and like I said before, it’s unlikely TWEWY will be as strong as the console RPGs. ... ... ... welp c ya later bracket twewy to round 3 i no longer believe Moltar’s Bracket: TWEWY > Dead Rising Moltar’s Prediction: Dead Rising - 51% Lopen’s Analysis Foddermania. Neku and that guy who covers wars, ya know? They've both looked pretty terrible. Their games haven't looked much better. So in the fodder match I'll go with the RPG that has the higher seed. Worked for Persona, should work here. Night match should help it, too. Lopen's prediction: TWEWY with 52.66% Transience’s Analysis This is a tough match because these games are unknowns both pretty weak. TWEWY has lots of data from GOTY polls but none in a real contest; Dead Rising has Frank West being weak but that's about all. The first question: how much do we like our RPGs? Dead Rising wins this match most everywhere but we're crazy about our RPGs here. We're the only site where Golden Sun has a shot in hell against San Andreas and yet the past two GTA results have people leaning towards Golden Sun being the favourite. TWEWY is no Golden Sun, but Dead Rising is no GTA either. RPGs -- as yoblazer has said recently -- never look bad on this site. They've uniformly performed well, from Deus Ex to Morrowind to KOTOR to FF9 yesterday. TWEWY is a well-liked Square RPG. Sure, it's on the DS, but the DS is massive. The second question: has the Xbox 360 becoming more and more popular over the years helped Dead Rising out? DR2 had very little hype and yet still had more anticipation than DQ9, a similar DS RPG. Dead Rising 2 is recent and sold pretty well. It's also not just dumb casual bait like a lot of 360 games - DR is a game that will appeal to GameFAQs. It's way better known. Still, it's not an RPG and isn't a well-established series. Both of these games suck. |
It
comes down to this: Neku lost to a Disgaea character. TWEWY got slammed
by LittleBigPlanet in a Best New IP poll. P3 snuck past Civ 4 and I'd
take Dead Rising to beat Civ, and for P3 to be equal or better than
TWEWY. TWEWY seems like a flavor-of-the-week game that has faded a bit
in the past couple of years. TWEWY is an original IP on a handheld
system - to this date, only Golden Sun has had any kind of success with
that and that's just because it has a lot of nostalgia for people due to
it being their first RPG. I am not supremely confident in Dead Rising,
but I like TWEWY even less. transience's prediction: Dead Rising with 54.39% Leon’s Analysis I’m not really sure what to think about this one. Overall, I really don’t trust handhelds, and I don’t like picking them to win matches. However, I really like TWEWY. I don’t know much about Dead Rising other than Frank West has covered wars, ya know. It didn’t seem to get a great reception from players or critics, although Dead Rising 2 just came out, which could make a difference. TWEWY actually did pretty decently in its GOTY polls, all things considered. It seems to have a decent following around here. Yeah, the characters haven’t done so great in the Character Battles, but Frank West hasn’t exactly been a world beater himself. Either way, I think this one will be pretty close, but I’m just going to fanboy this one out. Leonhart’s Embarrassing Confession of the Match: I actually set it on Easy Mode to beat the final boss of Another Day just so I could get the final report, but that was the only time I did it! I swear! Leonhart’s Vote: The World Ends With You. Leonhart’s Prediction: The World Ends With You with 51.63% Kleenex’s Analysis I dunno about this match. One one hand, RPGs thus far have shown that they have the chops to beat out moderately weak casual games. On the other hand, I still have a tough time trusting something as weak as TWEWY. I feel like TWEWY (I hate typing out this acronym) isn't that far removed from Persona 3 in strength. Neku managed to lose to Laharl, and I know that games =/= characters, but that's still a tough pill to swallow. Especially after Disgaea went and lost to Valkyria. On the other side of things, I feel like Dead Rising is probably significantly stronger than Civilization 4. All the stats you find or make up for this match probably call it in favor for TWEWY (still hate typing that), but I think Dead Rising is a bit too well known and a has a bit too much exposure to allow the RPG to sneak out a win. Dead Rising 2 recency helps a bit too. Gonna stick with my bracket here and see what happens. Kleenex's Prediction: Dead Rising with 53.11% |
Applekidjosh’s Analysis Alright, this is a match where I really think the seeds are deceptive. I think this because TWEWY has an insanely loyal fanbase the one place it counts - Board 8. Look at any poll it or its characters has been in and it doesn't look good (it looked OKAY in Best New Original Title of 2008) but aside from Board 8 I never see anybody talk about this game. It came and went on a handheld system which isn't good news in this contest. Meanwhile Dead Rising is also not very strong, but I also wouldn't say significantly weaker. In my head it's a toss up. So external factors? We have the HANDHELD FACTOR for TWEWY. We have the RECENT SEQUEL factor for Dead Rising. We have the ZOMBIE factor for Dead Rising. We have the KINGDOM HEARTS WAIT THAT ISN'T KINGDOM HEARTS? factor for TWEWY. Oh and I just checked the Guru and Dead Rising is actually the favorite here, which I didn't realize. Good for Board 8! But honestly I think this'll be really close and could go either way. AKJ is gonna try Dead Rising with 51.00% Guest’s Analysis - Mr3790 Oh look, a debatable match. This one can go either way, but I'll keep things short and give it to Dead Rising.After all, it is just coming off a fairly successful sequel, while TWEWY is a niche RPG that has nothing going for it outside of being an RPG. So DR Should have this one to a tune of... Dead Rising: 54.62% Now, TWEWY, time to impress I suppose. Crew Consensus: Leon and Lopen have TWEWY, but Dead Rising is the favorite here. |

Whoo, in Crew I trust? This morning I was leaning towards picking TWEWY in Battle, then I decided I should bank....lately I've been tempted to go with Dead Rising. Bracket has DR. 19000 at risk, nothing banked so far.... Still going back and forth in my head. One of these games is gonna lose, not win. The World Is Not Enough vs Dead Rising We've finally arrived at my most difficult pick of R1! Originally I went with World here based on Dead Rising suffering from what I call "Gears of War Syndrome." That's where you get all kinds of positive buzz and a huge playrate in your first couple months of existence, but soon people realize you aren't so great after all and by the time your sequel comes out no one cares. Now, I realize DR2 has actually sold pretty decently worldwide, but its GameFAQs impact has been practically nonexistent from what I've been able to tell. And in the red corner you've got a semi-cultish jRPG riding in right behind Persona's success in the last debatable Night Match, plus it kind of resembles the KH series which has been looking solid so far. Easy pick, right? Ehhhhh, not quite sold on it. Even with DR probably doing quite poorly overnight, past results still indicate it being safely ahead of stuff like Civ 4, and you shouldn't need much more than that to sneak out a win in this position. still trying to decide whether to wager 13000 or something points on
Dead Rising. I might bank it just because there's a very small shot of
escaping this division alive. I still have about 10 minutes to decide if I want to bank this match or gamble on Dead Rising, because I have a streak of 13600 points (once this match ends). I might as well bank this so my total banked points increases to 20200 (got 6600 already). If you plan to win the last 30 matches due to observation and adaptation, well... everyone will also be able to do that. Unless you're able to call some excellent late-game upsets that no one else sees coming, you're in trouble if you're like 50K behind the leaders now. there's so many weak tossup matches coming up, getting this one right
won't mean much. I would say that the winner goes perfect from round 3

Banking
is a good idea depending on your goal. I'm a karma entry so I don't

20k is 20k. Your approach is like saying field goals are worthless in football. Keep in mind that if you bank now you don't need a 50k streak to beat the guys at the top of the leaderboard, you only need a 30k. I'd feel a hell of a lot better about my chances of winning the battle challenge if I'd banked back at Morrowind/WC3. I'd have like 25k points instead of 10k. --- No problem! problem is that those people on top of the leaderboard are still
earning points; they may have it a bit easier than the rest of us if
they've already banked some, but they're still going to keep going up;
