Game of the Decade Contest Analysis Crew - Part 3
zzz --- xyzzy |
I predicted 81% and some digits. Glad to see I was correct on that one. I saw RE4 as a strong game but that wouldn't score over 80% on an average fodder. Thankfully, Jet Grind Radio is weak fodder IMHO. Which is why I expected low 80s, high 70s. So nice call on that Leon. And Golden Sun has a game coming out on its match day? Holy shit, this will totally screw predictions, mine first. Now I can actually see it having some chance since this will help it. --- "You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life." ~ Winston Churchill |
GTA: Vice City vs Silent Hill 2 Here's one of those "throwaway" matches where I'm nevertheless a little perturbed over the setup. One of the great joys of Contest season is watching GTA flop in new and exciting ways, which is generally easy since it gets anti-voted down to well below a reasonable value against anything... EXCEPT cultish games from the same system. How am I supposed to keep my promise to "bet against GTA wherever possible" if it draws opponents like this, SB? HMMMMM? On the flip side, even though SH2 was a lock to be one of the weakest games of the season, it could have at least come out looking respectable against nearly any Nintendo or Xbox title. A Night Match would have really helped its case as well. With the way things ended up shaking out, guess I've got no choice but to finally predict a semi-respectable showing from a GTA game. I'm thinking VC improves on SA's percentage just slightly, up to let's say Grand Theft Auto: Vice City with 66.64% --- thengamer.com/guru | thengamer.com/xstats | board8.wikia.com If I were you I'd search B8 for The Show, the cool Ng/yoblazer Contest podcast! |

Southwest Division: Round 1 - Match 42 – (8) Grand Theft Auto: Vice City vs. (9) Silent Hill 2 Moltar’s Analysis Vice City The final GTA game appears Silent Hill 2 Nope, not today Along with Mother 3/DMC3, this is the easiest 8/9 match to call. Silent Hill 2 is loved, as you can tell from the 9 seed, but it is also weak on this site. GTA is liked and far more popular. None of the GTA games looked impressive so far, so I’ll say that Vice City will put up only decent numbers here, probably similar to San Andreas/Dead Space. Moltar’s Bracket: Vice City > Silent Hill 2 Moltar’s Prediction: Vice City - 64% Lopen’s Analysis Silent Hill 2 is what you could call a “cult classic.” But we all know we shouldn't take it too seriously. The head of pyramids has sucked it up in the past, as has Silent Hill itself. So yeah, I mean, that GTA anti-vote is going to drag it down enough to make Silent Hill look respectable, but it should never be in any doubt. Though this game I'll actually agree with anti-voting. Excessive lens flare abuse and sickeningly bright colors are much more scary than most things in Silent Hill. Lopen's prediction: Vice City with 60.45% Transience’s Analysis Silent Hill 2 has a wicked high seed for being such a weak game. Vice City is about equal to Prime while SH2... well, we don't have a great picture of its strength but it's definitely not close. It's probably about equal to Dead Space and San Andreas nearly doubled it. GTA won't blow it out because it's GTA, but yeah. Shame the strongest GTA got the most cut-and-dry path. transience's prediction: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City with 66.56% Leon’s Analysis We have a pretty good point of comparison between these two since they both faced Final Fantasy X in the last Games Contest. Vice City got 36.79% and Silent Hill 2 got 16.43%. Yeah. I think Silent Hill 2 was the lowest ranked game in the X-Stats that qualified for this contest, so that should tell you all you need to know about this one. I don’t care what GTA’s reputation is in these contests. It’d be the shocker of the contest if Vice City blew this one. Leonhart’s Embarrassing Confession of the Match: I could never play a Silent Hill game because I’m a big sissy. Leonhart’s Vote: Vice City with the bracket vote. Leonhart’s Prediction: Vice City with 73.16% Kleenex’s Analysis Grand Theft Auto games are always a weird bunch. We saw GTA3 win somewhat impressively against LittleBigPlanet earlier in the contest, and then we saw GTA4 choke in its match against Pokemon, and then we saw San Andreas perform to expectations. Now, Vice City is most assuredly stronger than GTA4, and it might even be the strongest game of the bunch. Silent Hill lost to Fire Emblem in the series contest and got doubled by Morrowind last year. Pretty easy pickings. The more difficult stuff starts tomorrow. Kleenex's Prediction: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City with 63.12% Applekidjosh’s Analysis (take home chinese test johns continued) GTA Vice City vs Silent Hill wait why do I have Silent Hill in my bracket? I don't remember this at all and my gut instinct is GTA so... did I somehow talk myself out of it? Was it a pure accident? Well this is dumb! GTA > Silent Hill with 62% I'm so mad at my bracket right now at least whoever wins gets devoured by RE4 next round |
Guest’s Analysis - LinkMarioSamus Yet another match featuring GTA versus a scary game. At first glance I would expect San Andreas > Vice City and Silent Hill 2 > Dead Space, but on second thought, neither of them is set in stone. So how is the classic GTA generation looking? Well: GTA: San Andreas - 65% on Dead Space Grand Theft Auto III - 62% on LittleBigPlanet This seems to suggest that GTAIII is not all that far from San Andreas in strength, which I suppose is believable. I would first be inclined to believe that Silent Hill 2 will fare better than Dead Space, but then again, maybe not, as not only could Vice City be stronger than San Andreas, but Silent Hill 2 could be weaker than Dead Space. However I suppose it must be noted that GTAIII drew an advantage in its match since the series is night-oriented (and San Andreas therefore didn't), so Vice City will be in that same boat since it is also forced into a day match. So...here goes with a percentage I have zero faith in whatsoever: GTA: Vice City mauls Silent Hill 2 with 66% of the vote. My Vote: Vice City of course. Crew Consensus: GTA with no problem. |

GTA's doing fine. I dunno what you'd expect it to do. Its doing fine if you'd have no issue taking Morrowind over Vice City. I wouldn't take Morrowind to even get 45% on Vice City, though. Let alone beat it. --- http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/9/2010/11/500x_vegasdude.jpg |
72%? are you nuts? --- xyzzy |
GTA: Vice City (2009g) VS Silent Hill 2 (2009g) GTA: Vice City has a strength of 26.97. Silent Hill 2 has a strength of 12.26. GTA: Vice City wins with 77.27% of the vote! A win of 66,217 with 121,405 total votes cast. X-stats can be kinda off sometimes but still, theres really no excuse. I'll
never understand users extrapolating on 4-way polls for a normal 2-way
matchups. There's too many variables involved to accurately use it as a
source. Especially when mixed with strong and different games. All we
can tell from those polls is that Morrowind is somewhat stronger than
Silent Hill and that Vice City did fairly against 3 of the strongest
franchises in this contest. Any more extrapolation is completely stupid
and irrelevant. Use fucking common sense instead. --- "You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life." ~ Winston Churchill |

If you were to use common sense, then we wouldn't consider San Andreas to be in danger in the least bit against Golden Sun for instance, or many other things that go against "common sense". 4way stats is better than just "Common sense" or guesswork, at least. --- http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/9/2010/11/500x_vegasdude.jpg |
Leon is nuts too! --- xyzzy |
What
exactly is nuts about it? SH2 got rolled. You'd have to struggle to
find a single poll SH did well in. I definitely don't think think that
SH2 would be anywhere near LittleBigPlanet or Dead Space. --- DFF |
SH2 = Dead Space seems reasonable to me. --- xyzzy |
Not
really, no. Common sense is often a much better indicator than skewed
and messed up statistics. I'd rather not use any stats than follow
erratic ones. And yes, San Andreas will win. Easy win? Likely not. Still, Dead Space is not exactly fodder, unlike Ratchet & Clank. Aside from Mario, I've never see any platformer not be pathetically weak on GameFAQs. Still, it can hold onto the hope that it's got a game released on its match day. --- "You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life." ~ Winston Churchill |
http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3994 Silent Hill lost to Suikoden And Yu-Gi-Oh Get that through your head. Silent Hill is weak as crap. I hope you would take Vice City to be getting 70% here to any Suikoden or Yu Gi Oh game! --- http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/9/2010/11/500x_vegasdude.jpg |
Dead Space got way
more exposure and was played by a lot more people. SH2's claim to fame
is being one of those games that people talk about when they like to
call games artsy. I love it, but it's playrate is terrible. --- DFF |
And
get through your head that head-to-head matchups are the only reliable
statistics. Look at your poll dammit. Suikoden is the only RPG series in
it. What the hell did you think would happen with MGS in it? Most
people go for it. And die-hard RPG fans vote for Suikoden. Of course
it'll get a better result. I'm surprised it wasn't higher than that
actually. --- "You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life." ~ Winston Churchill |
besides, I can't expect blowouts from GTA. it'd be like expecting Pokemon GSC to slam Advance Wars. won't happen. --- xyzzy |
it'd be like expecting Pokemon GSC to slam Advance Wars. won't happen. huh, why not? I expect an easy 75% at least from that. What makes you think it won't be a blowout? --- http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/9/2010/11/500x_vegasdude.jpg |
because it's Pokemon. same thing happened in the Fusion match. --- xyzzy |
Too
many anti-votes. Some series always have the stigma to carry anti-votes
wherever they go. So sometimes they appear a bit weaker than they
really are because their support doesn't drop as fast. Halo is another
prime example. --- "You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life." ~ Winston Churchill |
If
you say so. I don't see Advance Wars as something that can avoid a
blowout. Even anti voted series can get major blowout if its facing
something weak enough. And Advance Wars should be one of the weaker
games in this contest, especially facing another major handheld title
from the same time period. --- http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/9/2010/11/500x_vegasdude.jpg |
Eh. http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3780 I think Pokemon can get blowouts under the right circumstances. The Fusion match was more Fusion being better than we expected. --- DFF |
Against
Banjo. Banjo!!! Anything would blow "that" out. It's what I'd expect to
get under 10% against actual challengers for the title. --- "You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life." ~ Winston Churchill |
Well what do you expect Advance Wars to do? That could end up being one of the weakest games in the bracket. --- DFF |
Niche genres/games almost always get steady support that prevent embarrassing blowouts. See: Beyond Good and Evil. So I expect something like in the mid-60s. --- "You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life." ~ Winston Churchill |
high-60s
is fine, maaaybe low-70s just because it's a Nintendo game GSC won't
have much of a chance to look bad because it's got two weak Nintendo
games to deal with. a lot of people probably would have expected Prime
to have a tough match with Diamond, so I don't buy Fusion being that
strong. --- xyzzy |
True. There's always the Nintendo SFF factor to consider. Still, in my mind, Fire Emblem and Advance Wars are similar. Fire Emblem is more established but they're the exact same genre. So a swing of say... 5% against the same opponent is what I'd expect. --- "You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life." ~ Winston Churchill |
Welp, San Andreas is boned. What is this mess --- "So cold. I am always by your side." "There ain't no gettin' off of this train we on!" |
