Game of the Decade Contest Analysis Crew - Part 3
Can
I be convinced that Borderlands is going to be winning against Vesperia
soon? It looks like it might be another close one. I've been hurt by
one too many of those -____- |
Well
if it makes you feel better, Borderlands was about equal to RE5 in the
GotY poll last year, and RE5 almost beat Symphonia which should be much
stronger than Vesperia. I actually have Vesperia in my bracket but not feeling good about it anymore. --- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love! |
I'm
surprised people are backing Vesperia here. Analysis spoilers: I took
Borderlands from day 1 and it never even crossed my mind that Vesperia
would have a chance here. Contest spoilers: it doesn't. --- This is the kind of shit that allowed the Bhopal incident to happen. 5,000 dead Indians. Want that on your damn conscience, Square apologists? |
I would be really surprised if Vesperia won. I would consider it a good performance if it broke 40%, really. --- DFF |
I really need to cut back on my use of the word 'here'. --- This is the kind of shit that allowed the Bhopal incident to happen. 5,000 dead Indians. Want that on your damn conscience, Square apologists? |
Its easily breaking 40%. It should be good for about 45%, Borderlands is really weak too. Borderlands should win though --- Epona > any Western character in CB9! http://i.neoseeker.com/ca/fallout_new_vegas_conceptart_7XvFK.jpg |
None
of the polls it was in suggest that Borderlands is 'really weak'.
Claptrap avoided the doubling against Zidane, it got close to RE5 which
got close to Symphonia, and got close to Dragon Age which just blew out
GX. --- DFF |
Low 60s-High 50s is probably where Borderlands will fall, I imagine. --- This is the kind of shit that allowed the Bhopal incident to happen. 5,000 dead Indians. Want that on your damn conscience, Square apologists? |
Go go FFX night vote, you can still reach 80%...! --- "I couldn't stand a day without a past or future. I need to live each moment to keep fighting here and now." |
Tales of Vesperia vs Borderlands Cool little matchup we're heading into this morning! I went with Borderlands in my bracket without much of a second thought, but I haven't felt fantastic about that pick since lockdown, which is why until just a few hours ago this was still set to Bank. So I did a little research- here's what I discovered tonight that convinced me to take the risk with Borderlands: * it's gone over 3 million in sales as of about 6 months ago. better yet, those sales have a pretty good distribution- 2ish mil to the 360 vs 1 to the PS3, nearly 1 mil in Europe vs 2ish in the US, plus a smattering on the PC * in the 400 days since its release, the 360 version of Borderlands has never left the Top 100 FAQs, currently sitting at a healthy 50th * that's probably because they've been keeping it fresh with DLC- 4 new episodes have been released in the past year. plus just last month they put out a "Game of the Year" edition that's a great value as it comes with all 4 DLC updates built in, so it should be well past 3 million players at this point * its reviews have been solid both professionally and with regular gamers, and its ownership stats through My Games are pretty impressive. overall I get the impression that this wasn't one of those flash in the pan games that peaks around GotY time and is then quickly forgotten... feels more along the lines of a BioShock, where people have continued to discover it just in the last 6 months * the Day Match should nullify Vesperia's one huge continental advantage (Asia) So, even though it feels weird betting on an oddball Western FPS/RPG to get past the exact prototype (flashy jRPG available on the current #1 console with anime dudes wielding swords in the match pic) that was this site's bread and butter for something like 10 years, I've got to do it. Here's hoping we don't get Valkyria Chronicle'd once again! Borderlands - 53.89% --- thengamer.com/guru | thengamer.com/xstats | board8.wikia.com If I were you I'd search B8 for The Show, the cool Ng/yoblazer Contest podcast! |
Mmm drop my percentage for this next match by 4% if you could, Moltar. --- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love! |
Crew is overestimated FF.It gets a lot of antivotes from this site because well it isn't Nintendo. --- GameFaqs is NOT the place to go for relationship advice.Nobody here gets any action unless it is their right or left hand.Including me.~Dawn and Dusk~ |
From: Ngamer64 | #210 The fact that Vesperia's one huge continental advantage IS Asia should be an advantage to Borderlands anyway. Asia won't factor into the equation unless this match is 50/50. --- "The great GF...Bahamut." "...GF? I...? Using my powers...It is you humans...I fear..." |
tag. --- Hau hauu, omochi kaeri! |
From: The Mana Sword | #203 I'm legitimately worried about it since to me this seems like two nothing games going against each other. Sure one happens to be Tales but what the hell is Borderlands. |

East Division: Round 1 - Match 34 – (8) Tales of Vesperia vs. (9) Borderlands Moltar’s Analysis Vesperia Best Tales game Borderlands Remember Claptrap performing well? This match has gotten some debate, but I’m just not seeing it. I love Vesperia, but Borderlands should have this match easy. The biggest distinction to make here is that Vesperia is not Symphonia. Vesperia is liked, but it just didn’t have that impact on GameFAQs like Symphonia did. Also, ToS barely got past RE5, and Borderlands is a game that was more appreciated than RE5 (but not necessarily stronger). Throw in Vesperia being weaker than Symphonia, and you’ve got a fairly easy Borderlands win. Moltar’s Bracket: Borderlands > Vesperia Moltar’s Prediction: Borderlands - 58% Lopen’s Analysis This is basically “Tales games that aren't Symphonia don't have strength” vs “Borderlands sucks.” I have Tales in my bracket, but now I realize that's kinda dumb. Because actually a GotY poll has RE5 vs Borderlands in it. Borderlands didn't do so poorly there, almost matching RE5. Now I'm not saying Borderlands = RE5, but it might not be far off... and when RE5 almost beats Symphonia who should be >> Vesperia, well, that's the match. It also came close to Dragon Age Origins in another poll. So yeah, Borderlands should have at least some bite, contrary to what I thought at first. Considering I'm pretty sure Vesperia is the way Namco says “I've had my teeth removed,” there should be no biteback. Yeah, that's a word. Lopen's prediction: Borderlands with 59.22% Transience’s Analysis This is a weird match. Borderlands should probably win it easy but I feel uncomfortable about it. It hung with Dragon Age in a "best new IP" poll of 2009, but then it also got slammed in the multiplatform GOTY, performing about as well as SF4 and RE5. Then again, those games have surpassed expectations this contest. 2009 is a weird year: MW2 and UC2 underwhelm while SF4 and RE5 do pretty well. Whatever. "lol goty polls", I guess. What gives me pause is that this is a new IP, something GameFAQs has never taken to. It doesn't happen often, but Tales is actually a bigger name here. People at least know Symphonia. Vesperia is probably pretty weak but it's a lot stronger than Abyss. It's one of the cornerstone JRPGs on the most popular console on this site. It got a lot of attention because of that. Is it still weak? Yeah. Do I think it's 'turbofodder'? Well, it's no No Mercy or inFamous. Borderlands has everything GameFAQs should like -- RPG elements, loot, WRPG -- but it's also popular for its guns and its online co-op, two things we've never been too big on. I'll pick it but I don't feel great about Borderlands. transience's prediction: Borderlands with 56.61% Leon’s Analysis As a general rule of thumb, you don’t pick Tales games that aren’t Symphonia ever, and you have to be careful when picking Symphonia. Plus, Vesperia is a 360 exclusive RPG. I’m not sure who thought this was a good idea. Borderlands did really well in the Best New Original Title poll, getting decently close to Dragon Age. Vesperia, on the other hand, got tripled by Gears of War 2. Claptrap would probably beat Yuri Lowell, too! How embarrassing. There’s not much more to say about this one. Leonhart’s Embarrassing Confession of the Match: When I saw Claptrap in the bracket last year, I thought it was the generic enemy from Donkey Kong Country. Leonhart’s Vote: Borderlands. Leonhart’s Prediction: Borderlands with 63.67% |
Kleenex’s Analysis I feel like this match should be easy. Tales games not named Symphonia are notoriously weak, and Borderlands was well-received, relatively popular, and more recent. It also has GUNZ, which didn't do so well when I took GTA4 over Pokemon, but you can't win them all I suppose. The fact that it's a day match probably hurts Vesperia even more, as Borderlands seems like it should be more casual-friendly than its opponent. So yeah, Borderlands wins the right to lose to FFX next round. Kleenex's Prediction: Borderlands with 58.56% Applekidjosh’s Analysis Oh man this is not only a match between two games I haven't played, it's between two games I hadn't HEARD OF before this contest. Let's do a little research... http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3356 Tales of Vesperia got thrashed by Fable II? That's gross. http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3722 without doing any of those fancy extrapolations, Borderlands got thrashed by Assassin's Creed II? Equally gross! uh no clue here so I went with the RPG in my bracket and I don't see any reason to change that now AKJ says Tales of Vesperia > Borderlands with 51.11% Guest’s Analysis - Chaotic Mind Tales of Vesperia is one of the best games in the bracket. It's a jrpg with a live action battle system that resembles a 3D fighting game, the best battle system in the genre IMO except possibly the MegaTen series' extremely strategic turn-based system. It also has a decent story as far as jrpg's go. Where it really shines though is its stellar cast of characters, most notably the main character Yuri Lowell, who is a serious contender for best video game character ever, along with the likes of Zack Fair, Kain and Raziel from the LoK series, etc. Like any Tales game, Vesperia is also chock-full of sidequests, and also replay value. It's only major flaw is the lack of an option to skip cutscenes, which can get annoying in a couple places where there's cutscenes right before a boss fight. Were it not for that, Vesperia would be essentially perfect. Unfortunately, none of that matters here. Despite being rpg's, Tales games other than Symphonia are not very popular on gamefaqs, for reasons i cannot fathom. It also doesn't help that it was only released on the 360. While i heard there's a ps3 port, i recently heard the ps3 port isn't going to be released stateside, so no help there. Borderlands, on the other hand, is a well-received, critically-acclaimed multi-platform game. As much as i want to back Vesperia here, i just don't believe it'll have the support necessary to win, especially not after seeing Symphonia struggle with RE5. East Division: Round 1 - Match 35 – (5) Golden Sun vs. (12) Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal Moltar’s Analysis Golden Sun Bacon really likes his GS, putting it in winnable matches and all Up Your Arsenal This ain’t Eddie Riggs we’re dealing with. Two series that we tend to underestimate in Contests are going at it. Isaac/Golden Sun does surprisingly well when it’s not facing something against Nintendo. Meanwhile, Ratchet seems to get more and more decent every year (hey going from crap to slightly less crap is still an improvement). Between these two games though, I gotta go with the Nintendo RPG over the Sony platformer. Golden Sun looks good away from Nintendo, R&C always looks bad. What really bugs me is how this match is going to play out percentage-wise. I can see Golden Sun winning in a close match, and I can also see it killing R&C. I guess I’ll go somewhere in the middle Moltar’s Bracket: Golden Sun > Up Your Arsenal Moltar’s Prediction: Golden Sun - 59% Lopen’s Analysis Man who cares about this match. You've got crap vs crap. But one crap, to be fair, has actually won matches or come close to winning them. Felix almost beat MC in 2002, and Isaac almost beat Lucario in the day. Okay, well, it's a lot of almosts, but it's better than Rat “I lose to Dante badly enough to make him look like NN status” chet. And well, high vs low seed, if nothing else. Nintendo vs Notendo? Lots of shaky reasons to take Golden Sun here, and that's good enough for me! The only hope R&C has is that the Golden Sun scares all the vampires who'll be voting at these hours in the night match. Lopen's Prediction Golden Sun with uhh 52.04% Transience’s Analysis Golden Sun is weirdly popular here. It seems to be a "my first RPG" type, kinda like Super Mario RPG or something. It was the first legit RPG on a handheld and that seems to override the fact that it's a fairly mediocre game. Sometimes being first is everything. I think Isaac would beat Ratchet despite being outnumbered in games like 10 to 1. (Maybe he's in GS2, who knows) It's a pseudo-Nintendo RPG vs. a Sony platformer. Ratchet and Clank has been getting more popular over time, especially since he's one of the starring PS3 exclusives, but this is still Golden Sun's match to lose. Don't listen to Leonhart's lies. transience's prediction: Golden Sun with 61.51% Leon’s Analysis Hello, [Golden Sun], you lucky devil! [Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal] has just sent you: [a galactic contest greeting]! We hope you enjoy your [first round] match! We’re sure that you be dazzled by the sight of weapons such as the [Nitro Launcher], the [Suck Cannon], the [Agents of Doom], and the [Rift Inducer]. Thank you, and enjoy your brief stay in the [2010 Game of the Decade Contest]. (We are not responsible for any cases of [explosive diarrhea] you may contract over the course of your match) Leonhart’s Embarrassing Confession of the Match: I still haven’t played every game in the Ratchet & Clank series. Leonhart’s Vote: Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal. Leonhart’s Prediction: Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal with 50.75% |
Applekidjosh’s Analysis Safer Sephiroth told me to be more serious so I guess I'll take the Safer option and pick the winners for the next couple matches! So Golden Sun was a neat little game. Looking back it was very average and doesn't stand out and isn't memorable but for some reason Gamefaqs eats it up. Never played a Ratchet & Clank game, because I grew out of the furry mascot platformer games about a decade ago, but I'm told it's good fun. http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3119 http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3512 These things show Golden Sun has fans! http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3998 More fans than "Earthbound fans will vote for it over anything else" fans? Crazy, cause I don't think I'd take Golden Sun over Earthbound... But this poll says it all about Ratchet... http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1872 I know it's a lot more loved now than it was then, but still! RPG vs mascot platformer is not a tough one on Gamefaqs! AKJ says Golden Sun over R&C with 62.00% Guest’s Analysis - GrapefruitKing I feel a bit silly now, but I’ve actually picked R&C in my bracket. It was a juicy, tempting upset. However, everything points to Golden Sun winning. Isaac has pretty much never disappointed in character contests (it seems like every year I’m surprised to realise that he’s not fodder) and the GS games have had decent results in polls they were in. The one thing that is making me doubt is Ratchet’s boost last year. He went from fodder to getting 44% on Jecht who isn’t exactly a pushover. It seems like Ratchet & Clank is finally starting to get more love. Is it enough for (supposedly) the best in the series to beat Golden Sun? No, but not by much. GrapefruitKing’s Embarrassing Confession of the Match: Sometimes I like to put on lip stick, dress up as a woman and kiss my reflection in the mirror.
