Game of the Decade Contest Analysis Crew - Part 3
Kleenex’s Analysis This match sucks. Dawn of Sorrow is one of my favorite games and it's going to get its face smashed in. Shame. Not really sure just how bad Dawn gets it, though. KH is pretty up there in strength (at least it was last year), and while Dawn is certainly nowhere near that, Castlevania stuff generally isn't quite bottom of the barrel fodder. Regardless, this should give people plenty to talk about before the impending KH/KH2 match. Kleenex's Prediction: Kingdom Hearts with 71.23% Applekidjosh’s Analysis I wonder if this match will end up giving us some insight into KH vs KH2? probably not, but eh. No time for in depth thoughts, let's just throw a random guess out there AKJ says KH > Castlevania DoS with 68.88% Guest’s Analysis - LinkMarioSamus This contest seems to have a number of rivalries continuing, some for no reason, and here is KH/Castlevania once again. Last two times featured Sora going 50-50 with Alucard before he blew past the vampire with the ASV, and a similar thing featuring respective franchises less than a year later. Now KH gets to beat on Castlevania again. KH likely breaks 60% on Symphony of the Night for heaven's sake, so this is a no brainer as to who's going to win. Unlike last contest, none of the 2/15 matches has upset potential (except for MAYBE SotC/Sims, and that's if you REALLY want to stretch it). As for the percentage, Dawn of Sorrow should be turbofodder; I never hear anyone or any gaming website mention much about the game nowadays. Problem is, this is Kingdom Hearts, which has a hard time scoring blowouts, but this time it's the original vs. a handheld Castlevania game, so I think KH will get over the hump for once as this is a day match and KH should use its ASV...WAIT WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT LOST IT TO PAPER MARIO LAST TIME!!! OBVIOUSLY MARIO MUST DO WELL WITH THE ASV...WHAT DO YOU MEAN MARIO GALAXY SUCKS WITH IT!!! In all seriousness, I'm going to plug in Twilight Princess's first round percentage for KH here. I have a hard time imagining Dawn of Sorrow > Shenmue but both games shouldn't be far from each other in any case. Kingdom Hearts > some DS game with 79.38% of the vote. My vote goes to...KINGDOM HEARTS OF COURSE!!! BTW how likely is it that KH1/2 will get rereleased on the PS3? And how likely is it for MGS2/3 and FFX/XII to do the same? jeez, go from 0.04% off a Perfect yesterday to missing by roughly 40%
today. I'm supposed to be Mr. Consistency, leaving those kind of swings
up to Lopen! But I can't deprive you guys of my wrong-headed logic, so here it is: Kingdom Hearts vs Castlevania: DoS Everyone's agreeing that since KH2 = KH1 (personally I've always favored 2 to have the slight edge, but whatev), we're in for a big time blowout in this Day Match. Which makes sense, considering how Halo is clearly stronger than Castlevania on this si- HOLD UP! Castlevania 55.02% 61076 Halo 44.98% 49930 TOTAL VOTES 111006 Now, support for Microsoft consoles has gone way up since this match and Halo's stayed fresh with 3 new main franchise releases, so the result would clearly be different here in 2010. But EVEN SO this poll illustrates two things: Halo's always been top tier at drawing anti-votes, and Castlevania has a sizable fanbase on this site. In the next round of that 2006 Contest Castlevania hung a very impressive 49% on the KH series directly. Now I'm not crazy- we're obviously not going to see anything close to that today. But I do think Castlevania's base of support is being badly disrespected with these high picks, and I also think we've lost sight of how KH isn't capable of blowing ANYTHING out. A good portion of GameFAQs will vote against it no matter the opponent, something we may have lost sight of during the 4way era. Now I realize the easy counter to this is "the name of the series isn't having much impact this Contest" and "it's a day match", but nope, no time to listen to reason, I've already decided to back my anti-KH bias! East Division: Round 1 - Match 33 – (1) Final Fantasy X vs. (16) Viewtiful Joe Moltar’s Analysis Final Fantasy X Hey look a top contender to win the Contest Viewtiful Joe Hey look it’s the more fun game Easy stuff today. FFX is one of the strongest games on the site while V Joe is...not. Based on what we’ve seen in the Contest so far, FFX is looking good to hit 80% here. Joe is still getting killed here, but it’s not going to be Guitar Hero-level bad. VJ at least has some fans here. Should be somewhere between 80 and 85, so I’ll go in the middle. It's always been believed that FFX would struggle a bit to reach huge percentages because it's not a game everybody adores like a Nintendo game, but then Kingdom Hearts went and tripled a well-liked Castlevania game (though to be fair, a handheld one). Viewtiful Joe is probably a little weaker than DOS, though it seems to have more rabid fans. Being a legit console game helps too. This is a night match so FFX should be able to look really good here. FFX getting all night matches until the semifinal should make it look stronger than it is, but whatever. We’ve got a game that got 25% of the vote in a poll with Chrono Cross, Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Brawl, Twilight Princess, Modern Warfare 2, Resident Evil 4, and Mario Galaxy vs. a game that got 7.38% in a poll that featured Gears of War 2, SoulCalibur II, Dawn of Sorrow, The Sims, and Wii Sports, among other powerhouses. FFX is the slightly favored winner of the contest (I think - maybe Melee is the slight favorite?), so this match will no doubt get people talkin' and gossipin'. We don't really have much of a read on Joe here. It uh...lost to Guiter Hero 2 in the vote-ins...did "decent" in the 2003 Game of the Year polls...yeah that's about it! Hopin' FFX doesn't flop here, because I have it winning and everything, but I'm kinda getting a feeling that it'll probably disappoint relative to expectations. AKJ says FFX destroys Viewtiful Joe with 85.00% Guest’s Analysis - MansSfan21 Final Fantasy X is one of the favorites to win the entire thing, according to the PotD that was up roughly a week before the GotD tournament started. Back in 2004, FFX just barely lost to Melee in the Division 128 semifinals, so we know it it has a lot to fall on. Being Square Enix material helps to. Most of the characters have also had much contest experience, especially with Yuna, Jecht, and Auron. Viewtiful Joe, on the other hand, has not done so good in the contest field. In the 2004 Character Battle, Viewtiful Joe was responsible for Tails' first win in any contest. In 2006, another Character Battle, Viewtiful Joe was trumped by the likes of Sonic, Sub-Zero, and the Prince of Persia. While FFX is a universally known game, Viewtiful Joe just came and went. I bet that there are more people who have HEARD of FFX more than people who have PLAYED Viewtiful Joe. It didn't help that Viewtiful Joe didn't have that good of sales anyway. Final Fantasy X vs Viewtiful Joe Final Fantasy in a night match is scary- FFX in a night match can be downright terrifying. Meanwhile most of this board still hasn't forgiven Viewtiful Joe for his 2004 Contest debut (me included. I mean, TAILS? seriously now!), so I understand why everyone would trample their own grandmother in the rush to call this the second biggest blowout of the season. But as for me? I'm not sold. FFX has a huge fanbase that adores it, which is why it's one of the best performers we've ever seen in multiway setting. Now, it's still vastly overrated in that regard since it lucked into perfect draws in both the 2009 Contest and all the Game of the Decade polls, but I'm getting off track here! The point is, Final Fantasies not named "7" are not built for blowouts in a 1v1 setting. X only managed 74% on Shenmue and 66% on FFTA (still one of the weirdest results ever) back in 2004, Tidus constantly jobs post-2003, and even the game's strongest character can't match up with the lead of the less-popular FF8 head to head. I still have plenty of respect for this game and think it has a good chance at going all the way- but I do feel that expecting SSB-like numbers is going to result in a slight disappointment. Final Fantasy is dead on this site. Well, not "dead", but it isn't even close to what it used to be. No great games since 2001, the age group is starting to fall out of the range where things like FF7 hold fond memories for them, and Square in general is kind of a turd now.
