Southeast Division: Round 1 - Match 29 – (3) BioShock vs. (14) Star Wars Battlefront II Moltar’s Analysis Bioshock The Big Daddy of this match Battlefront II This ain’t KOTOR If Legend of Dragoon is any indication (and Uncharted 2 isn’t complete crap), then Battlefront has some strength, but not much. However, BioShock is just too much here. Back in 2009, it managed to hang with Portal, and I have that game going kind of far in this contest. Moltar’s Bracket: Bioshock > SW Battlefront II Moltar’s Prediction: Bioshock - 62% Lopen’s Analysis Star Wars I think should be kinda decent. Bioshock strangely doesn't seem all that strong on GameFAQs (thing lost to Guitar Hero 3 in the 2007 GotY, and was edged out by Portal last year) so this one should actually be pretty close methinks, relative to expectations and hype, anyway. Another interesting part of this match is using it to get a read on how strong Legend of Dragoon and by extension how strong Uncharted 2 is. I honestly don't think that matters all that much, but people like extrapolating or whatever so this should give somethin to talk about. Honestly though I'm a bit unconvinced about how strong Bioshock even is so who knows if it gives any sort of meaningful read. Lopen's prediction: Bioshock with 54.55% Transience’s Analysis I'll be honest: prior to this contest I had never heard of Battlefront 2 or whatever. This is likely my own fault -- it did beat Mario Kart DS in that vote-in poll, a game that's not super popular but is still fairly liked -- but still, I'm not expecting big things here. I've heard a couple of people try to talk up an upset here but they're all huge Battlefront fans, so I pretty much ignore them. Bioshock is sneaky popular: I might go as far as saying that it's the most popular current-gen FPS with COD4 not looking so great. It's right up this site's alley thanks to its focus on atmosphere and storytelling over shooting. It's kinda like a more popular version of Metroid Prime, only without the Nintendo seal of approval. It should have no problem getting at least 60% on this Battlefront game, whatever it is. transience's prediction: Bioshock with 64.69% Leon’s Analysis Part of me wants to think that Battlefront II has a shot at the upset here. BioShock is a popular game. It came decently close to Portal in the last contest and was essentially equal to Halo 3. Its stock is on the rise due to BioShock 2 coming out since the last contest, and Big Daddy actually outperformed Gordon Freeman in the last Character Battle against Tifa. This is a series that seems like it keeps getting more popular (Spoilers: It’s still not beating KH2 next round). But Battlefront II seems to have a decent-sized fanbase of its own. It did manage to beat Mario Kart DS in the vote-in (avenging its loss to it in the 2005 GOTY poll!), and it came close to winning the poll outright. Star Wars is pretty popular here, so it’s probably got a decent playrate, too. The problem is…I’d struggle to pick KOTOR to win this match (BioShock was a little ahead of Halo 3 and KOTOR was a little behind Halo 1, so the difference probably isn’t THAT great though), and I don’t think Battlefront II would be that close to it in strength. So that being said, Battlefront II should do respectably here and has a very outside shot of winning, but BioShock should take this one fairly comfortably, in an Ulti-style blowout. Anyway BioShock is pretty cool, I was judging student Congress and one kid proposed a bill to allocate funds to build a Rapture under the Great Lakes. He got up there and the bill made a lot of sense, but debate was lack-oh sorry what are we doing here? Star Wars was in that incredibly weak vote-in poll. I watched a friend play once, looked dumb. Oh hey I forgot Bioshock lost in round 1 last time (GO PORTAL!). I don't think Bioshock will get the doubling here, but it might be close. Ok, to start things off, I am disappointed in the gurus for having a larger percent of people picking Psychonauts to beat Arkham Asylum than BFII to beat BioShock. I mean, seriously? I know that BFII is an shooter and that this is GameFAQs, but come on! Well, with that out of the way, let’s talk about the games themselves. BioShock is a very innovative FPS. As one user put it, it isn’t your typical “flash-in-the-pan” FPS, like Gears of War. Actually, it would be better to call it an action-adventure, since the game also incorporates role-playing and stealth elements. You know what? I don’t even know how to describe the game. It looks like an action-adventure, but then the article I am reading says it has rpg and stealth elements and that it is also a FPS. I was thinking Metroid Prime at first, but then I read more and I thought to myself, “What is this?” But that probably doesn’t matter anyways. The game is considered by many to be amazing. It also did decent in the last games contest. That was why people picked it. However, I think that people are highly underestimating BFII. One argument that people make about BFII is that if it lost to Legend of Dragoon in the vote-ins then it would suck. People, since when have multi-way polls been taken seriously, if ever? I, on the other hand, will make good arguments about why BFII can potentially make this match close. 1. It’s a night match. BioShock is most popular on the 360. This means BioShock would perform better in the day because of the ASV . Also, BFII is very popular in Europe , and I’m not just saying that because of vote-ins. I put over 400 hours into that game and many of the people I saw online were European. In fact, when the European server numbers are at their peak they are arguably the same in number to the American server numbers at their peak. This means that BFII will gain quite a bit of votes in the second half of the match, when the Europeans get out of school. 2. It is more popular than most of you think. For a few years BFII was in the top 3 games played on Xbox Live in the latter half of the Xbox’s life cycle. Keep in mind that this was back when both the 360 and original Xbox had Xbox Live online. This shows that BFII has a loyal and dedicated fanbase. If BFIII was announced a few days before the match (like Lucasarts ever makes smart business decisions these days...), I bet BFII would win the match. I’m probably making this longer than I should, but I believe I made my case. I strongly believe BFII can win this. However, just to play it safe, I put in my oracle Bioshock winning with 54%, and banked the match in my battle entry. I still have BFII winning in my bracket though. BioShock vs Star Wars BF2 I've got to admit that Battlefront's performance in the Play-In threw me for a loop, and it looks ever better now that we've seen how Legend of Dragoon is (somehow) a fairly respectable entrant in this bracket. I mean, I do remember the game having quite a bit of buzz back in '05, plus you'd have to think that the Star Wars brand name would add enough appeal to swing a few percentage points against a lesser-known opponent. But... this is BioShock, fella. Who disliked BS? NO ONE, that's who! It did well for itself on both the 360 and PS3, had a sequel to keep it fresh in everyone's minds, and now the third entry is on the way and everyone's hyped for it because- man, what an awesome first 10 minutes! (Check gametrailers for that if you haven't yet.) Pretty hard to peg a percentage here just because we don't have any solid data of either of these games, but I get the sense that whatever positive buzz BG2 had will be arriving 4 years too late compared to BioShock being one of the biggest darlings of "right now." All those positive vibes and recency should net a score of, oh, let's say the low 60s. It’s a question of how much KH2 will beat Halo 2 by. It's about time. Nintendo has had its way so far with both Smash games, two Pokemon games, two Metroids, Mario Galaxy and TP already having its chance. Now Square gets a turn. This match isn't in question - KH2 is scary close to RE4 while Halo is.. well, yeah. The most interesting thing about this match is Halo vs. KH during the day vote - who's stronger? We'll find out today. I'm not sure what to expect here besides to just go off previous results. Some people have gone nuts thinking Halo's had a resurgence because it beat a bottom-of-the-barrel Mario game and a bottom-tier character action game. In reality, it's probably about as strong as it always has been. Metal Gear Solid 3 and KH2 were approximately equal last year if you measure through Resident Evil 4, and MGS3 got 62% on Halo 2. I'll go a little bit lower because I don't think KH is universally liked. Then again, the same is true of Halo. Both will look a little worse in 1v1 matches. I do think KH2 could take MGS3, though, just due to the fact that one is a Square RPG and one is not. transience's prediction: Kingdom Hearts 2 with 61.34% Leon’s Analysis Ah, a battle of day vote kings in a day match! It should be interesting to see how these two games do with the day vote against each other. Unfortunately, that’s about the only interesting thing about this match. You’ve got “Almost beat RE4 twice” vs. “Lost to World of Warcraft and was losing to Okami overnight.” I’ve heard some concern that KH is losing a step due to how poorly Sora and company did in the last Character Battle, but the KH series has had some surprisingly good performances in some recent POTDs, so I’m not TOO worried about that. Besides, I doubt the series has lost enough of a step even if it has to lose to BioShock or MW2 (spoilers). It definitely hasn’t lost enough of a step to blow this one. Kleenex’s Analysis Well, the other two Halo games did well enough for themselves earlier in the bracket. Halo 2 gets no such luck. It's the weakest Halo game in the original trilogy, and Kingdom Hearts is no Mario Sunshine or Ninja Gaiden. This should be a pretty impressive win for KH2, and then we can all gossip about whether it'll beat KH1 a couple rounds down the line. How exciting. Kingdom Hearts 2 vs Halo 2 Now, here's a real moral conundrum for a Crewmate such as myself. I've been hammering on the old "tons of people strongly dislike Kingdom Hearts, you just haven't seen it much due to 4ways" drum for years now (and it sure came in handy for me earlier this year; Bowser >> Sora like I said all along, EAT IT LEON!). But on the other hand, I've been calling Halo the ultimate choke artist for even longer- plus I'm betting H2 will be the chokiest of them all (H3 is still basically being played right now, in ODST/Reach format, while H1 has all that "respect/importance vote" that seems to be big this season). When it doubt, split it right down the middle! KH's fanbase makes it tough to beat but easy to keep under a doubling, while Reach is keeping Halo hot enough that it should be able to limit the damage moreso than usual. Let's go with something just a touch under 60, in that case. how many times do you have to be told the ASV is a completely different
demographic? Halo being >40% in the US right now doesn't mean
anything, it could still rise or fall with the ASV. My guess is the ASV
will favor KH but it's really anyone's guess right now, one of the
highlights of this match is finally finding out who of KH and Halo has

Man Albion is far from the only guy who uses those things. So many people shout "California" all the time and it usually doesn't matter as much as you'd think. KH2 getting 64% is enough to make me feel fine about the BioShock
match. BioShock isn't a night game anyway. Its trends (and Big Daddy's
trends, too) have been more day-oriented. KH2 would've really had to
struggle here for me to think BioShock could win next round. "Equal to

cool. thing is, most of us have been around a long time so at this
point, most results don't offend us or make us happy. they're just
popularity polls, and Battlefront is pretty small on GameFAQs. Shadow
