Southeast Division: Round 1 - Match 27 – (5) Dragon Age: Origins vs. (12) F-Zero GX Moltar’s Analysis Dragon Age One of the 2009 GotY finalists F-Zero GX oh man this game is so hard Man I love F-Zero GX, but show me a poll where anything F-Zero (not Captain Falcon) has looked good. That’s right, you can’t. Meanwhile, Dragons Age hung with Uncharted 2 and MW2 in the 2009 GotY polls. It’s no powerhouse, but at least that’s relevant today. Moltar’s Bracket: Dragon Age: Origins > F-Zero GX Moltar’s Prediction: Dragon Age - 63% Lopen’s Analysis I remember some people hyping this as a match. I dunno if they were joking or just had the Captain Falcon fever but yeah I don't see the match. F-Zero is absolute fodder and Dragon Age Origins was one of the stronger games of last year. This should be a pretty easy one. Personally rooting for a monster blowout so we can get a Dragon Age > Zelda bandwagon started. That'd make my contest! Unfortunately, I'm not predicting quite such a big beatdown... unless almighty RYO HAZUKI humiliates Twilight Princess. Lopen's prediction: Dragon Age Origins with 68.20% Transience’s Analysis We're in for a string of boring matches here, so don't expect informative writeups here! Dragon Age got an unfortunate path: an easy match against a Nintendo racer and then a chance to put up a respectable defeat against Twilight Princess. It is very clearly going to win this match. F-Zero GX is probably the best game Nintendo has made this decade, but it's still a hardcore racing game. Those games will never succeed here. Even Mario Kart 64 would have a tough time with Dragon Age. Dragon Age isn't super strong but it did manage to hang with Modern Warfare 2 and Uncharted 2 in last year's GOTY processions. F-Zero GX being a Nintendo game probably helps it more than your average racing game, but it's still going to get doubled or worse. transience's prediction: Dragon Age: Origins with 65.32% Leon’s Analysis Dragon Age is one of the games in the bracket that has a load of wasted potential. It has one match it cannot lose followed by one match it cannot win. This game was a GOTY finalist and was essentially equal to Uncharted 2, which has a chance to make the divisional finals thanks to its placement. It could really do something with some better bracket placement. F-Zero GX really doesn’t have a chance of winning this one. It’s pretty low on the Nintendo hierarchy. It’s the second fiddle racing series, totally overshadowed by Mario Kart (heck, and maybe even by Diddy Kong Racing). The only reason Captain Falcon is in any way decent in these contests is due to Smash Bros. F-Zero has very little to do with it. Sad, but true. Leonhart’s Embarrassing Confession of the Match: All I know about Dragon Age is Sandal, and it kind of makes me not want to play the game. Leonhart’s Vote: Dragon Age: Origins with the bracket vote. Kleenex’s Analysis Hrm. I don't think Dragon Age is as strong as a lot of people think it is. Yes, it hung with Uncharted 2 and Modern Warfare 2 in the Game of the Year polls last year, but how strong do we really think those games realistically are? I'm not totally sold. I think Dragon Age is going to disappoint in a big way here. I don't think it'll disappoint enough to allow F-Zero to sneak out a win or anything like that - the discrepancy between their supposed strengths is too big for that to happen. Probably. But a tricky performance in the GotY polls combined with a middling at best reception of Awakening makes me pretty nervous about going too high here. So I won't. Totally not fishing for Accuracy points or anything like that. Nope. Kleenex's Prediction: Dragon Age with 57.12% Applekidjosh’s Analysis This one should be a no brainer for Dragon Age in YET ANOTHER MATCH BETWEEN TWO GAMES I'VE NEVER PLAYED. F-Zero GX has been in a grand total of one poll, the best of 2003 gamecube poll, and it got absolutely smashed there. I'm honestly shocked it got into the contest, and with that seed to boot. Must be transience rallying the clique or something. Dragon Age looked respectable in the Best of 2009, not as good as Modern Warfare 2 (which is now a scary statement to make!) but not F-Zero level fodder. This shouldn't be close. AKJ says Dragon Age with 66.00% Guest’s Analysis - Chaotic Mind Dragon Age is a popular multi-platform wrpg, a genre that's much in vogue on gamefaqs. F-Zero GX is a racing game not named Mario Kart, which means it's a joke here. In fact the only thing F-Zero has going for it is the FALCON PAWNCH joke factor, but that's not near enough to make a difference this match. F-Zero GX should be a lot stronger than Mother 3. The 2009 games are
weak, and COD4's performance was not inspiring, and MW2 should be
weaker. --- Nominate Crono so he can get a higher seed and avoid being fed to Clinkeroth early in the contest. |
Dragon Age vs F-Zero GX At first glance this feels like a low scoring dullsville of an affair where a weak game scores a doubling on bad fodder. But the more I look at it, the worse I feel about that opinion. Let's go over what's giving me the creeps * racing games do horribly and F-Zero's even a jobber within the genre, getting doubled by Need for Speed recently. but then again, we've never seen this series outside of situations where its getting destroyed by Nintendo, and Mario Kart in particular; seems like the kind of thing that'd do better 1v1, especially since... * we just saw Captain Falcon lay down a wicked knee on Riku in a Day Match despite no one (but me!) giving him any chance at the win. granted Falcon's strength is 50% character design, 30% SSB, and 15% meme, but that other 5% has to come from somewhere, right? * yes Dragon Age scored 49% on Uncharted in the Final GotY, but that number was boosted ALL TO HECK by drawing such favorable opponents in that threeway. Uncharted was worth more than 57% on it directly in the poll before that, which is probably closer to its true value. this game is looking more weaksauce by the minute, especially considering how * Uncharted could only manage 57% against Legend of Dragoon. okay sure, we massively undervalued LoD, but that still doesn't speak well for the strength of the 2009 GotY crop Fortunately for Dragon Age, it appears to be quite popular in Europe (taking first place in the GotY voting over there) while F-Zero is not (based on Falcon's matches), so even though it'll get out to an embarrassing start in this one, it should be able to chip away at GX's percentage for pretty much the whole poll. Twilight Princess vs Shenmue Believe it or not, the name "Shenmue" used to mean something on this site. The original game was nearly as anticipated as Majora's Mask when it first launched, the sequel topped Sonic Adventure 2 in the Best Dreamcast Game poll, and in his initial Contest appearance Ryo hung a brutal 71% on Guybrush Treepwood (only 6% less than Vincent, OMG). The trouble is, all these site shifts later those results might as well have taken place in prehistoric times. There are still people who fondly remember the original as a groundbreaking title, but due to Sega's complete abandonment of the series in the past 8 years those voters are going to be few and far between. Which has to be a shame for Zelda-haters, as backlash over it being so overhyped combined with general Wii backlash could have resulted in a poor showing for Twilight Princess, had it been matched up against something like Shadow of the Colossus. But against "Shenwho"? I think it'll be fine. Whoa, speaking of Shenmue being utterly forgettable, I didn't even remember that it matched up against Final Fantasy X in 2004! That was back when Square was the undisputed king of this site, yet X notched only 74% of the vote, a mark that TP should be able to blow past with ease. Which is not to say that I think TP >> FFX; I just think Zelda games are better suited to blowouts, plus Shenmue has probably lost a good quarter of its fanbase since that match took place. Why it Happened: Galaxy still weak as it failed to triple a game like BG&E. Also, despite it being the weakest generation, that's still enough to take out the latest GTA. Thank you kiddies and ASV. What will Happen: Galaxy is looking safe. I mean, it did beat DPP a year ago. Southeast Division: Round 1 - Match 28 – (4) The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess vs. (13) Shenmue Moltar’s Analysis Twilight Princess some Zelda game Shenmue *insert one of the thousand of Shenmue jokes here* ‘lol’ match. Shenmue might have been a possible winner in another match, but it’s not doing anything against Twilight Princess. FFX nearly tripled it 6 years ago when it was semi-relevant, and I’d take TP to get that tripling the same now. Moltar’s Bracket: Zelda TP > Shenmue Moltar’s Prediction: Zelda TP - 77% Lopen’s Analysis Need I remind you that Ryo Hazuki hit Guybrush Threepwood with a doubling+ Shenmue is a total beast, yo. Well okay maybe not... but we can see if the Zelda anti-vote is still going strong! Expecting an underperformance for that very reason, somethin that'll get us thinking about Galaxy vs Zelda in round 3... or better yet, Dragon Age vs Zelda in round 2...! Lopen's prediction: Twilight Princess with 73.02% Transience’s Analysis Man, I don't even know what Twilight Princess is up against this contest. *looks* Shenmue? Shenmue is in this contest? And this is a day match? Quick pre-match question: what's stronger, Shenmue or Beyond Good & Evil? I say Shenmue. Not that we need more proof that TP will beat Galaxy, but if TP triples Shenmue or worse, any discussion about that match should probably be silenced. transience's prediction: Zelda: Twilight Princess with 76.89% Leon’s Analysis When we saw Shenmue in the first Games Contest, it did this: http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1630 We should probably see something similar to that this time around, maybe even worse. Shenmue is a Dreamcast exclusive. In 2004, we were still sort of in that era, but in 2010, we’re well removed from it. SoulCalibur nearly beat KH1 back in 2004, but then it struggled to beat Xenogears last year. Skies of Arcadia fell off the face of the earth a few years ago. The further removed we get from the Dreamcast, the weaker these games will get. Twilight Princess isn’t as strong as FFX, but it’s close enough that it should be able to manage close to a tripling or better unless we keep getting that weird trend we saw in 2010 of “Anti-BlowoutFAQs.” Who knows. Kleenex’s Analysis Twilight Princess is the big front runner to take this division, and with good reason - everything else in it sucks. It should completely smash its first round opponent. Kleenex's Analysis: Twilight Princess with 80.67% Applekidjosh’s Analysis ZELDA FEAR OH MY GOD and against Shenmue of all games. Spoiler - Another match where I haven't played either game! I feel like Leonhart here or something. But man, just look at Shenmue's showings in the polls. Crushed by FFX in a match, crushed by Sonic and even beaten by Phantasy Star in a Sega Series poll, this thing has a small but dedicated (keyword SMALL) fanbase or something. but it's just Twilight Princess, nobody likes that crap.
