Super Mario Galaxy vs Beyond Good and Evil Don't let BG&E's poor showing in the Play-In match fool you; this is a game that- wait, 6.88%? How the FLIP do you make the main bracket with only 6.88 percent!? And it got tripled by Madden '04? Okay, so no one had heard of the game at the end of 2003, considering it didn't gain a cult following until years down the road, but that's still Beyond Awful & Pathetic. Erm, where was I again? Oh right, I was trying to say, don't sleep on this game- despite its tiny sliver of a playrate here on GameFAQs, this Game of the Decade format is going to boost it up immensely. Any gamer "in the know" will have at least heard of this title and remember its reputation as one of the forgotten gems of the last generation. Basically it's reading from the same script as Psychonauts, a game that impressed us (a little bit) by holding Batman to only 72%. Also, Europe apparently likes this game way more than anywhere else, so it's possible we'll see Galaxy start fast but have percentage trickle away as this Night Match moves along. Luckily none of that matters, because Galaxy is awesome and vastly underrated by B8 and here's hoping it draws GTA4 next round post-Pokemon beatdown so Galaxy can smack it around for 12 hours straight and finally shut up Leon and tranny! Why it Happened: Well, we were right about VC being weak. However, it's still not as weak as Disgaea. VC definitely has its fans. Brawl...well being one of the strongest games in the bracket and fighting another Nintendo game will give you that kind of result. What will Happen: Despite the numbers, DPP should be in the clear for R2. Southeast Division: Round 1 - Match 26 – (8) Pokemon R/S/E vs. (9) Grand Theft Auto IV Moltar’s Analysis Pokemon R/S/E Worst Generation Grand Theft Auto IV Maybe they should have just stuck with GTA3: New subtitle So the weakest Pokemon generation vs. a GTA game. Man that’s cruel. GTA4 didn’t have any room to shine last contest since it was stuck with Brawl and then CoD4. Still, that game started strong at release, but then people turned on it nasty. With the overall decline of GTA strength on GameFAQs plus the overall “meh” attitude that has attached itself to GTA4, it’s got an uphill battle here against Pokemon, a series that seems to get more love over time. However, we’re dealing with R/S/E here. It’s my least favorite generation, and generally agreed upon by most people I’ve seen to be the weakest. This is especially worrying after D/P/P didn’t look too hot against Metroid Fusion, but I’m hoping that was just Fusion being stronger than we thought. Then again, Galaxy and CoD4 haven’t looked good either...welp. I hate putting faith in GTA, but a game like R/S/E doesn’t give me much confidence either. One important factor to note is that we’re talking about Pokemon in a day match, which should give it a push. All the kiddies are going to show up and give it the win, right? right? right? Ugh this is going to be like Sunshine/Halo all over again isn’t it? Might as well go 0-2. Moltar’s Bracket: Pokemon R/S/E > GTA4 Moltar’s Prediction: Pokemon R/S/E - 51% Lopen’s Analysis I think Pokemanz is the favorite here? Yeah everyone is all paranoid of GTA, and POKEFEAR is stronger than ever, but we just saw DPP disappoint, and RSE is gonna be that game but way worse, right? We've seen enough evidence to shoot down raw franchise power for crappy games in this contest already, and I mean, did anyone like RSE? Any other Pokemon game and I'm going with da Pikachu crew in this match, as GTAIV is the weakest rep the series has in the bracket, but considering your typical “Pikachu crew” from this game consists of an acorn, arithmetic fun pikachu, Eric Cartman, and a giant ass nose, well, I'm not too worried. Lopen's prediction: GTA IV with 55.86% Transience’s Analysis The smart pick here is GTA4. Pokemon RSE is the weakest mainline Pokemon game - the Pokemon name has a lot of strength but it all resides in the first two games. Pokemon Diamond is stronger and just struggled with Metroid Fusion. Would Pokemon RSE even beat Metroid Fusion? Meanwhile, in that one vote-in poll, Fusion lost to Resident Evil 5. Would GTA4 lose to Resident Evil 5? I don't think so. The scared pick here is Pokemon. Why? Because GTA has a history of failing miserably while Pokemon has a history of screwing everybody over. Also, this is a day match where GTA fails and Pokemon shines. Something simply doesn't feel right about picking a GTA game over a Pokemon game. Does it make sense statistically? Nope. Is it a legit reason to pick against GTA? Absolutely. Am I going to do it? Nah, mostly because I'll feel bad if I pick against GTA out of fear and then GTA goes and kills it. Leon’s Analysis When I first saw this match in the bracket, I picked R/S/E without giving it much thought. However, as I started thinking about it, I began to think GTA IV might have a chance in this one. From my understanding, R/S/E is the black sheep of the Pokemon series, easily the least popular of the bunch. KP is much more of a Poke-expert than I am, and he assures me this is the case, so if I’m wrong, blame him! Then I remembered that GTA IV and D/P both faced CoD4 in the last Games Contest, so I decided to see how the two of them compared. D/P got 39.53% and GTA IV got 41.41%. Even if you factor in any potential LFF between Galaxy and D/P, you end up with a reasonably close match. If that’s the case and R/S/E really is the weak link in the Pokemon series, then GTA IV’s got a great shot at winning this one. I do have a couple of concerns. First of all, GTA IV may have fallen off the map since we last saw it in 2009. Niko did pretty well in the Character Battle in 2008, but then he got doubled by Jill Valentine in 2010. Was one of those matches a fluke, or was it indicative of a GTA IV drop? Plus, if you’re one of those people who thinks Nintendo won’t abandon their own, no matter what, then R/S/E may win this. We’ll see. Leonhart’s Embarrassing Confession of the Match: I feel dirty for voting for either one of these, but at least I can write it off as a bracket vote! Leonhart’s Vote: Grand Theft Auto IV. Leonhart’s Prediction: Grand Theft Auto IV with 54.36% Kleenex’s Analysis Now here's an interesting match. Initially I thought Pokemon probably had this without much trouble. But after Platinum's lackluster performance a couple days ago, I'm not so sure. Logic dictates that 3rd gen Pokemon likely weaker than its 4th generation brethren. Indirectly, I don't think the gap is that huge, but it should be noticable. So the question I'm asking myself now is if I'd take Grand Theft Auto 4 over Metroid Fusion in a match. And honestly, I think I'd take GTA4 there. Even though the game might have gotten a fairly lukewarm reception from the masses, it still managed to perform decently in the polls its been in. Plus, it has GUNS and I've been burned too many times by GUNS in this contest. So for the second time, I'm going to turn my back on my bracket and put my vote in for GTA4 here. Yes, it's a day match, and Pokemon should technically have the advantage there, but I'm just getting a gut feeling that GTA4 is going to take this. We'll see if I should stop listening to my gut or not. Actually Pokemon entries on this site are really interesting. The Albions of the world will ask "A pokemon fan is a pokemon fan, won't they vote for anything?" but moreso than any other series there's a definite heirarchy in the Pokemon games and the fans drop off at each level. So, SFF notwithstanding, DPP > RSE easily but GSC > DPP easily but RBY > GSC easily. It's weird, it doesn't have to do with age necessarily either. Come to think of it, GTA IV is also the black sheep of its 4 games. I wonder if SB did this on purpose? It never clicked for me until now. So what's worse? A bottom tier Pokemon game or the worst Grand Theft Auto game? Well... a ha! GTA IV was unplayable on my standard def TV because I couldn't see the words on the cell phone!
