Northeast Division: Round 1 - Match 15 – (2) Half-Life 2 vs. (15) Left 4 Dead 2 Moltar’s Analysis Half-Life 2 King of the Valve empire Left 4 Dead 2 Lowly peasant gg L4D2. You got stuck with one of the worst opponents possible. God of War just embarrassed L4D yesterday, and this should be even worse. Moltar’s Bracket: HL2 > L4D2 Moltar’s Prediction: Half-Life 2 - 75% Lopen’s Analysis Valve SFF or something so says the old wise men. So says I that you don't need to listen to the old men, only listen to the GOD OF WUH, who destroyed the first game so bad that you can basically count this one completely out even if you don't believe in valve SFF. But hey, you know, I think I will listen to those old guys because well why not. If it doesn't happen, well, just make fun of those geezers, don't take it out on Half-Life. Lopen's Prediction: Half-Life 2 with 78.95% Transience’s Analysis God of War put up a hell of a performance against L4D1, undoubtedly the bigger of the two L4D games. Half-Life 2 should be able to SFF L4D2 into the ground somewhat, even though they're a good bit different: one a co-op online FPS and one a single-player FPS. This match is all about trying to compare HL2 to God of War. If HL2 can't beat L4D2 worse than GOW beat L4D1, pencil God of War in for the favourite to take the division. I have faith in Half-Life 2 but it needs a big number here. There is no reason for L4D2 to compete here at all. transience's prediction: Half-Life 2 with 77.28% Leon’s Analysis This one seems pretty straightforward. Half-Life 2 is going to be one of the strongest western games in this contest, and it seems like it’s only going to get stronger as Valve continues to be Steam-powered. It beat Final Fantasy XII in the last Games Contest and did respectably on Twilight Princess. Left 4 Dead 2 doesn’t seem to have been as well received or popular as the original, based on what little poll information we have here. It lost to Trials & Tribulations in the vote-in, which is never a good thing. Half-Life 2 doubled PW1, in case you were wondering. Leonhart’s Embarrassing Confession of the Match: I have never played a PC game in my life. Leonhart’s Vote: Half-Life 2. Leonhart’s Prediction: Half-Life 2 with 67.72% Kleenex’s Analysis Time for some HALF-LIFE. I'm "betting it all" on this game, so to speak. I have HL2 making a run to the semis - a pick that'll probably ruin me, but was too good to pass up. Valve has come a long way from the days for Gordon Freeman getting beaten by the likes of Tina Armstrong. The company is well respected and some of its more recent games have proven to be rather popular. HL2 should be the Ocarina of Time of Valve, as it were. On the other side of things - another Valve game. I'm of the impression that L4D2 is weaker than the original. The general vibe I get from people who have played both is that the second game is "okay", but not really as great as the original because it's pretty much just more of the same. I could be way off base here, but that's the way I see it. HL2 should do a number on its opponent here. If it doesn't, I'll start getting worried about the game even making it past God of War, let alone Metroid Prime (more like Okami). random message ever: Half-Life 2 is a bit of a defending champ here, as
it won Crispy Gamer's Game of the Decade contest last December,
narrowly edging out World of Warcraft in the finals. Hilariously it ran
into Fallout 3 right in round 2, and almost lost there. It also had a
close call in the Final Four where it lost to Smash Bros. Melee, but the
GameCube mascot was caught cheating and Half-Life 2 advanced anyway. Well that contest had God of War losing to Soulcalibur II in the first round, lol. Also there was Left 4 Dead in the Elite Eight (even though it was only a 14 seed, it was able to upset Call of Duty 4 easily in the first round and it rode the momentum to kill Advance Wars and Rock Band afterwards as well, ending with a respectable 44% on Halo 1 in its final match). --- I have no idea how Metroid: Other M got any scores lower than 60%. |

SSB Melee vs Guitar Hero II Tonight marks the start of Melee's march to the Game of the Decade title, and I'm thinking it kicks off that title run in a big way. Trouble is, I fear expecations of a blowout may have risen a little TOO high in the wake of the way RB2 stumbled out of the gate. As in, some people are honestly expecting SSB to gun for an unheard of 90% in this one... yikes! Now, if we were looking at anything from GH3 and onwards in this #16 spot instead I could see that being a possibility, but Guitar Hero II is the only game in the genre that all music fans can agree on. (Because it was the last game that Harmonix made before splitting off to start the Rock Band franchise, fracturing support for guitar games into two rival camps.) GH2 was also the last entrant before the genre "sold out" (or whatever) in the minds of many by putting out all these band-specific games and generally releasing a new music game every other month. In other words, I don't see anti-voting being as big of a problem as some are making it out to be. If Melee's going to turn this into a laughter, I'll have to do so on the strength of its own popularity combined with how hardly anyone outside of North America "gets" music games. And honestly, I think that alone will be more than enough to push past Fallout 3's mark for "blowout of the season". Anything much past that, like say 85% and beyond, would be hugely impressive IMO. East Division: Round 1 - Match 17 – (1) Super Smash Bros. Melee vs. (16) Guitar Hero 2 Moltar’s Analysis Super Smash Bros Melee Strong contender to win the whole contest. Guitar Hero 2 Music game So Rock Band, a series that has grown stronger than GH over the past year, lost to Deus Ex in an upset. Now SSBM, one of the strongest games on GameFAQs, is about to take on Guitar Hero 2. Yeah this is going to be ugly. Melee should shoot for the stars here. Moltar’s Bracket: SSBM > GH2 Moltar’s Prediction: Super Smash Bros. Melee - 81% Lopen’s Analysis Well this match would be uninteresting even if we didn't see Rock Band 2 stink it up so bad against Deus Ex... now it will be... unnerinteresting. But hey maybe Guitar Hero 2 will do better than Rock Band 2 huh? CRAZY THEORY A: If Guitar Hero 2 does well here, it shows that the “before it got run into the ground” vote is still strong and No Mercy will be a powerhouse. There now I've analyzed give me my check. Lopen's Prediction: Smash Bros Melee with a lot. Like... 85%. Transience’s Analysis Well, here's our first mega-strong game in this contest and it's up against a Guitar Hero game. Rock Band 2 already bombed against Deus Ex and Guitar Hero's one calling card -- multiplayer -- is totally trumped by Melee. Melee should be the best game in the contest for blowing people out - everyone can play and enjoy Smash and it doesn't have Brawl's anti-fanbase. Guitar Hero, to be polite, is Fucked. transience's prediction: Super Smash Bros. Melee with 83.03% Leon’s Analysis This one really doesn’t require much analysis. Melee is one of the favorites to win the contest, and Guitar Hero II needed the vote-in to get into this contest (and it lost to Wii Sports in the process, which should’ve been here instead for giggles, but that’s beside the point). The first couple rounds of this contest are basically going to be a muscle-flexing competition between Melee and Brawl, seeing who can get the bigger blowout. Let’s see how high Melee goes here. Leonhart’s Embarrassing Confession of the Match: I still have no clue what a wavedash is. Leonhart’s Vote: Super Smash Bros. Melee. Leonhart’s Prediction: Super Smash Bros. Unfortunately, Round 1 isn't going to give us a very good gauge on how the inevitable Melee/Brawl match is going to go. But it should be gun to watch Melee completely obliterate its opponent here. Melee with 84.14% Applekidjosh’s Analysis I got home and realized "oh crap the next match is about to come up and I didn't do a writeup" but then I realized it was Melee demolishing Game #1 on its path of dominance so this won't take long. If any Crew member writes more than, say, 5 or 6 sentences I have to wonder if they get paid by the line instead of in a lump sum at the end. AKJ says Melee > whatever it's facing with 81.00% |
Guest’s Analysis - Ultimaphazon This is my first guest writeup ever, so I just hope I don't embarrass myself too much. The winner of this match is as obvious as it gets. Melee is a lock to win this match, but it's percentage is not set in stone. In a poll, the Guitar Hero series was virtually even with Rock Band, and we all know how well Rock Band did against Deus Ex. However, I believe that Guitar Hero 2 is stronger than its series, and thus stronger than Rock Band 2, since it was released before Activision decided to drive the series into the ground. Melee is one of the favorites to win the whole thing, so it will have to put up impressive numbers here, or talk of it losing the big Smash duel will arise. I think Melee will fail to impress here. That is, if people are expecting 90% performances from Melee. 75%+ seems obvious enough. Let's go with: Prediction: Super Smash Bros. Melee with 78.92% Crew Consensus: Melee domination |
