Northeast Division: Round 1 - Match 14 – (6) God of War vs. (11) Left 4 Dead Moltar’s Analysis God of War Plans to send those demons back to hell Left 4 Dead Literally in this case. And here is Part 2 of setting up that ToS/GoW rematch. God of War is still very relevant on this site, with God of War 3 being released earlier this year and God of War 2 dominating its vote-in poll. Action games haven’t looked good so far this contest, but GoW is likely to be the exception to that rule. Left 4 Dead isn’t a total pushover though, and since 2009, it has had a sequel and ever-growing Valve love. However, it’s simply out-matched here. TF2 barely squeaked by Fable a while back, and TF2 >= L4D (debatable) while GoW > Fable easy. Moltar’s Bracket: GoW > L4D Moltar’s Prediction: God of War - 58% Lopen’s Analysis Well in the beginning of God of War, Kratos is Left 4 Dead. Kratos also likes Leaving Things 4 Dead. SFF match? I think so. Seriously though Left 4 Dead isn't fodder. It beat Mass Effect last year and looked pretty decent vs Fallout 3 and Halo 3. It should come out of this one looking respectable. Day match probably helps GoW, but I don't think it'll need it. Franchise power of God of War should pull it through here. Kratos hacks through hordes of zombies like no one's business. Lopen's Prediction: GOD OF WUH with 56.33% Transience’s Analysis Left 4 Dead is an attractive upset pick here. Character action games are *garbage* here, as DMC3 and Ninja Gaiden have shown. L4D is a popular, influential multiplayer co-op shooter, something fairly unique in the console space. It has decent results backing it - a not-so-bad showing in the 2007 multiplatform GOTY and a fanbase that's clearly gotten bigger since then. Valve is serious business and that game just kept on selling like crazy throughout the early part of 2008. Tough to go against God of War though. GOW2 seemed like a legit game in the vote-in poll, something DMC and NG couldn't muster at all. It's probably the most popular character action game and has become more influential than Devil May Cry in the last few years. Everything is ripping off GOW now. There's a good reason for that. transience's prediction: God of War with 59.13% Leon’s Analysis God of War isn’t as great as people think it is. People have made up all sorts of excuses for why it lost to Tales of Symphonia, but it still lost. In its GOTY poll, it got 30% while Dragon Quest VIII got 21%, and it lost to Mario Kart DS while getting curbstomped by Resident Evil 4. I know the God of War series has gotten bigger since then, but the games still don’t do all that well in polls. Action games just don’t do well here, and God of War isn’t an exception. It might be the strongest (though I think I’d give that honor to Assassin’s Creed at the moment), but that’s not a great distinction. That being said, I don’t think it loses to Left 4 Dead. It won’t be a blowout though. It did pretty decently in its GOTY poll and its Games Contest match. I don’t think it was good enough to beat God of War, but it’ll do respectably here, perhaps well enough to get those people who were being so cocky about GoW winning next round sweating a bit. Kleenex’s Analysis Now here's a match. Left 4 Dead has done alright for itself in the past. It held up well enough in a match with a bunch of other GUN games in 2009 and had a pretty good reception all around. Meanwhile, God of War commits the unholy crime of being an action game, but it probably has more exposure overall. Hmm. This is probably the first match where I'm legitimately stumped. With all the previous ones I've at least had an inkling of who I thought was going to win, even if it was wrong. I'm not feeling comfortable either way here. So, time to flip a coin. Heads - God of War Tails - Left 4 Dead ... Heads it is! Kleenex's Prediction: God of War with 51.00% Applekidjosh’s Analysis Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 are both awesome games that everyone loves, but damn did they get screwed in this contest. L4D is in a winnable match here - certainly action games aren't looking very hot - but I just can't buy a (essentially) PC game beating a PS2 game that has a half dozen sequels across 3 systems. Also God of War looked better in the 4 ways last year AKJ prays God of War > Left4Dead with 55.55% Guest’s Analysis - Chaotic Mind God of War is an epic game of slaying gods and monsters in the bloodiest, most visceral ways imaginable. Left 4 Dead is a game of shooting zombies not named Resident Evil 4. Prediction: God of War rips L4D's spine out through its stomach, then leaves it for dead. Northeast Division: Round 1 - Match 15 – (7) LittleBigPlanet vs. (10) Grand Theft Auto III Moltar’s Analysis LittleBigPlanet Last time, it was stuck with MGS4. So unlucky. Grand Theft Auto III Last time it was stuck with Diablo, Halo and KOTOR...and cost me some points. Like Halo, you’ve got to be wary of any debatable match with a GTA game or character. It was never really a force to be reckoned with on GameFAQs, but over the last few years, it’s failing to meet even our lowest expectations. Well tonight, the series will be tested again. This time, it’s LBP. We don’t have much data on LBP considering whenever we see the game in action, there’s a stronger PS3 game to make it look bad. Still, I wouldn’t expect too much from it. GTA can at least hang with respectable series, so it all depends on where you see LBP falling in strength. Personally, I don’t think it’s at GTA’s level. Moltar’s Bracket: GTA3 > LBP Moltar’s Prediction: Grand Theft Auto 3 - 57% Lopen’s Analysis Sure, GTA's disappointed in the past, but LBP is well established fodder in these things so shut that upset special down. But uh expect its percentage to be inflated because of GTA anti votes. Honestly I don't know why the original next gen GTA gets anti-voted. Game was revolutionary at the time. They ran it into the ground a bit but man gotta appreciate the original GTA3. Well, who knows, maybe it doesn't. We only saw it once after all! Lopen's prediction: Grand Theft Auto III with 61.11% Transience’s Analysis I've hated this match since it came out. LBP is weirdly underrated but still isn't a big name. GTA3 is, in my estimation, the weak link of the PS2 GTA games, but the three games aren't that far apart and Vice City did beat Metroid Prime. Would I pick LBP to compete with Metroid Prime, even with Paper Mario potentially weighing it down? transience's prediction: Grand Theft Auto 3 with 59.45% Leon’s Analysis This match is a weird one. We have virtually no data on LittleBigPlanet that doesn’t have it coupled up with Metal Gear Solid 4, its worst possible opponent. It dominated the Best Original Title poll, but TWEWY got second place in that one, so what can you draw from that? Although it seems like one of those overhyped titles that got a lot of publicity, but then people played it, realized it was nothing special, and then forgot about it. Sackboy beat Kratos Aurion and got 35% on Leon Kennedy in the Character Battle, but he feels like one of those iconic characters with the good design that transcends his game, if that makes any sense. Sort of like Amaterasu, I guess. When it comes to Grand Theft Auto, you basically have to throw out any poll that happened prior to 2005-2006. GTA used to dominate polls back in the day, but ever since the site shift, the series has dropped pretty hard. The only poll we have with GTA3 in it since that time was its Games Contest match last year. While it came in last place, it still did pretty well. It got 47.33% on Diablo 2, the game that got first in that poll, which is really good. I have a hard time seeing LBP match that. Of course, you can never count out GTA choking a match away anymore because that’s pretty much what they all did last year except for Vice City, but I’m sticking with it here. Kleenex’s Analysis Something came up and I don't know if I'll be back in time to write a full writeup so here's the short one for tonight. LittleBigPlanet sucks. Kleenex's Prediction: Grand Theft Auto III with 59.01% Applekidjosh’s Analysis Littlebigplanet is going to get creamed here. The seeds are a lie. Nobody cares about it and it only got in with that 7 seed because it's considered a "requisite PS3 game." Meanwhile people actually like GTA3. Not going to waste time analyzing this match, it's a gimme. GTA3 > LBP with 73.00% Guest’s Analysis - Articuno2001 This is a pretty easy match. LittleBigPlanet is weak, we saw it do horribly in 2009 and its character's only win is against a Tales character. LittleBigPlanet's one positive fact is that it was with three other games from the PS3 that SFFed it badly, but it won't be enough to win. GTA, while disappointing in pretty much every contest, definitely has enough strength to take down LBP. However, it won't be a blowout - Grand Theft Auto III will find some way to look bad in this match. Prediction: Grand Theft Auto III > LittleBigPlanet, 54.05% Crew Consensus: GTA3 in a sweep. |

ohes! Schedule got way messed up due to the Rock Band 3 Midnight Launch
Event Party I attended last night, followed by RB3ing it up all night
afterwards. Time to get caught back up! Tales of Symphonia vs Resident Evil 5 Ugh, I can't get a decent feel for this match whatsoever. No one dislikes the Tales Of series more than myself (due to all the character slots they've wasted over the years, not the games themselves), and so a month back I'd have been doing backflips over the chance to call the upset here. (I'll admit that ToS did way better than I expected in '09, but I've always thought this series was ideally suited to the 4 way environment and, like its characters, would struggle in a head to head setting.) I would have been especially excited to back the underdog right after that "Favorite Capcom Series" poll went up- 28%, easily topping MM and more than doubling Street Fighter? Sign me up! But then along game Play-In Poll #3... YIKES, talk about an enthusiasm-killer! Getting blown out by a franchise (GoW) that has always been garbage in multiway polls isn't exactly the way to inspire confidence. Our first week of results has only further weakened my faith in RE5 ; we've been consistently outsmarted by the voters so far in R1, as they're actually putting some thought into choosing the "better" game rather than just siding with the brand name they're more familiar with. That ought to translate into positive results for RE4 and ToS, and disappointing showings for Vesperia and 5. ...yet despite all that, I still have almost no faith in Symphonia. Ah well, put me down for an unsatisfyingly small win that leaves the result against GoW very much in doubt for next round, I guess! God of War vs Left 4 Dead L4D strikes me as an underrated franchise in terms of perceived popularity. Topping Mass Effect by 5% is no joke (okay so that was pre-ME2, but STILL), and the game earned 20 percent+ in R1- not too shabby considering Halo 3 and Fallout 3 were probably its most disadvantageous opponents imaginable (okay, aside from Half-Life 2. thanks once again for THAT brilliant setup, SB!). Now, I'm quite aware of how L4D-anything always looks atrocious in huge multiway polls, but that doesn't bother me too much as I've always assumed it has a bit more "casual" appeal and would benefit from a 1v1 setup. I'd also think that L4D1 is the game that this season's trend is favoring; 2 was an improvement in all areas, but 1 was the original trailblazing critical darling that didn't have to deal with backlash for not measuring up to pre-release hype. ...the problem is, God of War 1 has every single one of those advantages also! We're talking about a multiway bomb/casual-loved 1v1 sniper that gets credit for kicking off a now-successful franchise, on top of the series just being just stronger than L4D in general, both worldwide and on this site. After being trumped on all those counts, the only thing left working in L4D's favor is how action games have been falling on their faces left and right so far this season. I'll admit to that making me a bit nervous, and I certainly agree that Kratos >> GoW in the same way that Dante >> DMC, but at least all 3 entries in the series have been universally regarded as "pretty good", so GoW1 shouldn't be stung like DMC3 may have been a few days back. Give me God of War with a never-in-doubt-but-still-not-at-all-impressive victory for this one... enough to maintain its favorite status against ToS next round, though only slightly. Grand Theft Auto III vs LittleBigPlanet Within minutes of this Contest being announced I made it my goal to bet against GTA whenever possible. This is a series that tumbled from 46% on Melee to 49% on Warcraft two years later, and has taken a flying leap off a cliff since then. 42% of this site said they dislike the GTA series and have no interest in picking up San Andreas... only five months after SA was crowned GotY. Only 29% of the site said they were going to be purchasing GTA4, and that was BEFORE it launched big, severely underwhelmed, and turned an even larger chunk of gamers against the series. We're talking about the franchise that, at the height of its popularity, allowed its lead character to get punked by a guy who's worth 45% on Big Daddy. You'd think I was beating a dead horse right now, but I just glanced through the Oracle topic... 65% wins for GTA3 getting predicted all over the place! I mean, I'm well aware that LBP is no world-beater, but let's remember that it's always been stuck against its worst possible opponent (MGS4/Snake) in the past; the one time it was given a chance, Sackboy scored an Ulti-blowout on an RPG character that used to be worth 45% on Alucard. Additionally, LBP seems custom made to soak up GTA anti-votes: vastly different option, lovable underdog, well-received by both reviewers and gamers, figures to do well in a Night Match (Sackboy is stronger in Europe than North America). Okay, okay, so I don't have the guts to actually call the upset, largely because I think that the "respect/importance/founding a successful series" vote is going to make 3 the strongest of the GTAs in this GotD setting, but still... this talk of a doubling is crazy! Half-Life 2 vs Left 4 Dead 2 We come to it at last: the least interesting match of the entire bracket. What's there to say about that match that will never be in doubt, but where the final percentage doesn't matter in the least because we're not going to learn anything about either contestant? I guess I could say "honestly now SB, SFF hasn't been cool since 2004," but I've done that enough this Contest already! On the plus side, at least we can assume that L4D2 would have been dead in the water against pretty much any of the higher seeded games in this bracket. L4D1 is probably worth more in this GotD setting given the way voters are trending, and as God of War showed us, even that isn't very much. Would have been fun to get another rough barometer on the status of Valve after that company's rough first two showings, but instead Half-Life could hang an 80% plus here today and nobody would be impressed or think any less of Prime/Fallout's chances. Fortunately LBP's failings have at least made next round's matchup appear a little bit more interesting, for the moment... So yeah, something a bit above the doubling feels about right, but the huge overlap makes it impossible to pin down. Bring on Melee's 10x as interesting "blowout of the season" match!
