Northeast Division: Round 1 - Match 13 – (3) Tales of Symphonia vs. (14) Resident Evil 5 Moltar’s Analysis Tales of Symphonia It’s hot Resident Evil 5 I lied.....it’s actually cold. This is one of those ‘it’s GameFAQs’ matches where if you’ve been on the site for a few years and have seen past contests, you’ll know how this goes. ToS is loved here for some reason, and while the Tales characters have never impressed, you can’t say the same about the game. It proved that last Games Contest when it hung with games it had no reason to be hanging with. Resident Evil 5 though, that came and went. Not only did it barely make a blip on the radar, it has now completely fallen off the map. Remember how horribly it did in its GotY poll? It’s not even going to be half as strong as RE4. As we’ve seen in this contest, the more popular game isn’t guaranteed a win over the smaller fan-favorite. I think this is going to be another one of those cases thanks to the love that ToS gets. Moltar’s Bracket: ToS > RE5 Moltar’s Prediction: Tales of Symphonia - 55% Lopen’s Analysis No “obvious” match makes me feel as uneasy as this one. All the data we have favors ToS to win pretty easy. It did great last game contest, beating games that would eat RE5 for breakfast. It did well in the GotY poll for its year. Resident Evil 5 on the other hand has no real impressive polls to its name, and has the SFIV problem of over half the site having no interest in playing it. But I dunno. We've never seen Tales of Symphonia in a 1v1 match, and it seems like the kind of game that would be a bit inflated by 4 way stats. There's also the fact that this is a night match, where ToS is weaker and Resident Evil is much stronger. But after seeing games like Deus Ex break 50%, never say never I say. And we've seen Lloyd Irving beat Albert Wesker with 55% in the past, right? So the thing can break 50% if it wants. And apparently RE5 is the black sheep of Resident Evil or something, being a source of disappointment after RE4. I'm not sure how much I believe that... but maybe it'll matter. Should be a close match in any case. Let's go Tales! Prove you're no joke! Lopen's Prediction: Tales of Symphonia with 55.55% Transience’s Analysis It's really too bad RE5 was in the vote-in polls (http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=4049). If you take this match without that result, it is a hell of a lot more debatable. First of all, this is a night match which is a huge advantage for RE5. RE5 is a hell of a lot better known. TOS has proven itself in the past, but it's all been in the fourway format; not that I think it'll have too much trouble in this setting, but god knows TOS has a loyal fanbase. It's not trying to get 25% anymore. It needs 50%. Now then - Tales of Symphonia went even with God of War. Resident Evil 5 lost cleanly to GOW2 and needed the night vote to save itself from Metroid Fusion. Fusion or Tales of Symphonia, what would you pick? Leon’s Analysis I have a feeling that a lot of people are going to pick Resident Evil 5 just because it’s an RE game facing a Tales game, but Symphonia isn’t your average Tales game. It’s considered to be one of the only great RPGs of the GameCube, which means people who owned a ‘Cube and were starving for an RPG pretty much had nowhere to turn to but this game. Plus, Tales of Symphonia beat God of War and San Andreas last Games Contest, so it’s not like it can’t win just because it’s a 1-on-1 now instead of 4-ways. That logic has always been silly to me. The difference between the two formats in terms of results is nowhere near as great as people act like it is. Plus, I think RE4 is kind of an exception when it comes to RE games as well. It’s very well loved, of course, but RE1 and RE2 didn’t do that great in the last Games Contest. Not bad, but not that good either. RE5 hasn’t really done that well in any of its polls either. It got rocked by God of War 2 in the vote-in poll, and Tales of Symphonia already managed to beat God of War 1. The strength difference between those two games shouldn’t be great enough for RE5 to turn around that margin. Also, why the heck did the most recent mainline RE game almost miss the contest entirely? I know using nominations isn’t the best indicator of strength, but something about that seems to tell me that the RE fanbase isn’t crazy about it, especially considering RE4 got the fourth most noms in the entire contest. Leonhart’s Embarrassing Confession of the Match: I have never played a Resident Evil game. Just not into survival horror. Leonhart’s Vote: Tales of Symphonia. Leonhart’s Prediction: Tales of Symphonia with 56.37% Kleenex’s Analysis So far this division has been going a lot better than the first one (note: I had Mega Man 9 in my bracket even though I picked Demon's Souls here yesterday), so let's see if we can keep the streak going. I felt like this may have been an upset pick when I first made my bracket, but the more I think about it - it really isn't. Resident Evil 5's reception by fans has been lukewarm at best. Then back in 2009 we saw that ToS was actually legit, despite most of its characters being ass. Legit as in the game isn't total fodder - hanging with the likes of God of War and GTA isn't exactly stellar, but the fact that it was able to beat them says something. But really, this is all about how much people don't give a fuck about RE5. It lost handily to GoW2 in the vote-in poll and got demolished in its Game of the Year poll last year. GunFAQs is going down. Kleenex's Prediction: Tales of Symphonia with 56.88% Applekidjosh’s Analysis I just realized I haven't played either game in this match, or most of the matches in this division! Only MM9, Half Life 2 and the L4Ds! I tell you this because it's far more interesting than the beatdown Tales is going to lay on the black sheep of the Resident Evil franchise. not to be "that guy" but the seeds aren't lying in this match. I'm sure the other guys will post the statistical reasons that I've seen thrown around a bunch of times, too. As for a percentage though, this is a shot in the dark for me. Guest’s Analysis - Black Turtle (3)Tales of Symphonia more like fails of symfailia (14) Resident Evil 5 The most controversial video game since Mortal Kombat Analysis On paper, despite the overwhelming support for Tales, this has the potential to be a barnburner. Tales was never incredibly strong to begin with, and Resident Evil 5 has a pretty wide range it can fall in, and the top end of that range is definitely higher than Tales. You could look at Tales' performance in the last games contest, losing to WoW and Oblivion as a negative, but once you start looking at other matches in that end of the bracket, you'll see it higher than Halo 2, GTA:SA, and (barely) God of War. This is an interesting match, because that's right around where I'd peg RE5 to be. And don't let the high seed for ToS fool you, as that can be easily explained by Board 8's blind fanboyism, and desire to repeatedly get entrants from this crappy series into contests. Unfortunately, ToS (the game) is probably the one solid entrant that the series has managed to produce in these contests, and should be the favourite going into this one. I find it hard to take RE5 over the likes of GoW/GTA:SA or WoW, given the way it both fell off the map, and didn't really make a huge impression. RE4 this is not. impressive in the polls its been in, but it's still a much better option
than Tales for people who aren't into that sort of RPG niche. I'd be
more worried about RE5 winning before I would Tales putting up close to
