Demon's Souls vs Mega Man 9 We tend to overestimate match pics more often than not these days, as today's result can attest to. Like Uncharted, DS has the critical acclaim but not enough of a playrate to have made a major impact on this site yet, while MM9 was very well reviewed in its own right. Granted brand names haven't been a huge seller so far this season, but I think the MM name is JUST enough for 9 to squeeze out a win here. Okami vs No More Heroes Plenty of people are taking Okami for around a doubling here. Apparently they haven't seen this little gem BEST OF 2008: Best Wii Game No More Heroes 8.8% 6988 Okami 6.38% 5064 NEED I SAY MORE? ...nah, just kidding, NMH is doomed. Ports and remakes always get stomped in a GotY setting while Heroes was coming in at the height of its power due to recency, so that poll was about as unfair as you can get. The recency advantage is dead (people moving away from the Wii in the last year and a half means fewer came back to the series for NMH2), which should be enough to make Okami the easy favorite. And then the voters are taking critical acclaim/good reviews/strong word of mouth into account way more than I expected to see so early in the bracket, which of course puts a Game of the Year like Okami way out in front. That being said, I think much of Board 8 is making the mistake of equating Amaterasu' s success with the future success for Okami. This is the kind of smaller/niche/dedicated fanbase title you'd expect to thrive in a multiway environment, yet it lost cleanly to the weakest Halo and got crunched by WoW last season, and has never impressed in any GotY or Anticipation poll either. Which is not to say that Okami's going to be a total weakling... just that Ammy's incredibly appealing (weeaboo wolfshirt) character design probably accounts for more of her popularity than most people realize. Now of course we DO get to see that fantastic character design in this box art, but heck, it's going up against a lightsaber- the ultimate in pic advantage neutralization! Look for NMH to do a decent job of limiting damage in this one, much like Travis did against Zelda earlier this year. Northeast Division: Round 1 - Match 12 – (4) Okami vs. (13) No More Heroes Moltar’s Analysis Okami Great game No More Heroes Great game Not expecting anything wacky in this match. Okami is a game that’s on the rise and gets stronger over time. You can see that through Ammy’s growing strength over the years. No More Heroes, on the other hand, is pretty weak. Hasn’t ever looked impressive, and Travis hasn’t done anything of note in these contests. Next. Moltar’s Bracket: Okami > NMH Moltar’s Prediction: Okami - 62% Lopen’s Analysis Both of these games should be fairly weak, with no impressive polls or mainstream recognition to speak of, but Amaterasu isn't total fodder and Travis Touchdown is, so unless the football vote is in full force (unluckily for NMH this match is one day late) Okami should win this, but keep an eye on the votals-- I could totally seeing them being crummier than RB2/Deus Ex. It has to be one of our least likely success stories, a new IP with fairly low hype and average sales that's just managed to succeed by being a good game. Usually those kinds of games flop hard but Okami has proven time and again that it's legit. It's not super strong but when the expectation is the floor, you have to applaud. NMH was once a crossover hit here. It was never quite on Okami's level but Travis has had some good success. NMH was one of the first 'hardcore' games to really embrace the Wii controller, and for that it got a lot of praise. However, the Wii has been getting killed here lately and I think Wii Remote gimmickry is wearing very thin. Once upon a time, NMH probably kept it somewhat close with Okami. But now? transience's prediction: Okami with 62.44% Leon’s Analysis This one shouldn’t be in question. Okami didn’t do THAT great in the last Games Contest, but it gave Halo 2 a good fight and even led it for a little while. Still, No More Heroes is more cult than Okami is. Don’t pay any attention to that Wii GOTY poll where No More Heroes beat Okami. In fact, that probably speaks more AGAINST picking No More Heroes than it speaks for it. Ports never do well in GOTY polls here, and NMH struggled to beat a port. It should do semi-respectably here, but it’s not coming close to winning. Leonhart’s Embarrassing Confession of the Match: I’ve owned Okami for a few years now, and I’ve barely played it. I should get around to that sometime. Leonhart’s Vote: Okami Leonhart’s Prediction: Okami with 63.45% Kleenex’s Analysis Battle of the cult, cel-shaded games, how exciting. This is a gimmie match. Okami has proven itself to be a solid contender a number of times in the past, while No More Heroes...well, it hasn't been all terrible, but it hasn't been able to impress the way Okami has. Actually, looking back, maybe Okami hasn't impressed that much. Perhaps I'm just thinking of Amaterasu here. Whoops! And hey, No More Heroes actually beat it in a poll they were both in! Too bad, Okami still wins this. It has more exposure and has a cool wolf on the cover. Unless No More Heroes has guns. Does No More Heroes have guns? I hope not. Applekidjosh’s Analysis This contest is like some kind of annoying reminder that I haven't played many critically acclaimed games these past few years. I've heard both of these games are great, but... oh well! Seems to me, from my awesome vantage point, Okami was popular enough to get some ports and NMH is more of a "big on Board 8" game. The seeds seem to agree. I'm gonna totally "casual" out here and just trust that. AKJ reluctantly says Okami > NMH with 56.65% Guest’s Analysis - Kotetsu534 Bracket Pick: Okami Okami, a game I'm a huge fan of, got 34.8% on MGS3 last time around. You can argue stand-out factor if you want to, but I think this is a solid performance regardless. Amaterasu broke 40% on Luigi in a night match. It's got a significant fanbase. Some people have argued that since No More Heroes managed to beat Okami in the '08 Wii GOTY poll it's the favourite here. I wouldn't put much stock in Okami's performance there - it was a Wii only poll two years after Okami's original release on the PS2. No More Heroes got tripled by LBP and lost easily to The World Ends With You in the '08 Original Title poll, which I'd expect is more representative of its strength at that time. It's since had a sequel, and Travis Touchdown almost broke 30% on Zelda. Still, I don't see it troubling Okami. Oracle Prediction: Okami with 60% Crew Consensus: Okami wins by a decent margin |
