North Division: Round 1 - Match 7 – (7) Halo 3 vs. (10) Super Mario Sunshine Moltar’s Analysis Halo 3 Remember when we finished that fight? Good times. Super Mario Sunshine Remember when we learned that clean was better than dirty? Good times. This match. This fucking match. Mario vs. Halo would usually be a ‘two-line write-up c ya later’ kind of match. However, this isn’t any ordinary Mario game. This is Super Mario Sunshine, the red-headed stepchild of the 3D Mario games and one of the most disliked Mario games in the franchise. It’s opponent? A game from the just as disliked Halo series. The worst thing is that this match takes place in a weak-ass bottom half of a division and the winner here has a shot at going to the division finals. Ugh. Halo 3 did okay last contest. Nothing great, but it didn’t do terrible either considering it was stuck with more liked shooters. Halo has had ODST and Reach since then, but neither game made a big impact on GameFAQs. Sunshine...is Sunshine. It’s never impressed in any poll its been in because people are willing to vote pretty much any Nintendo game over it. I’d take Halo 3 to win this match 9 times out of 10. I mean, I’d feel bad about going with Halo in any debatable match, but it’s not like I’d feel better with Sunshine. I had Halo 3 in my bracket until a day or two before lockdown and then switched for who knows what reason. I’m sure the other guys can sum up how I feel on this match better than I can, because going into it will only give me a headache. I guess I’m hoping that the Sunshine hate has somewhat died down over the years and it being a night match will be enough to give Sunshine the slight edge here. Please don’t fail to disappoint everyone once again, Halo. Moltar’s Bracket: Sunshine > Halo 3 Moltar’s Prediction: Sunshine: 52% Lopen’s Analysis This match is a funny one. It's the black sheep of Mario vs a second tier game in Halo, GameFAQs's black sheep series. Before Sonic Adventure 2, I would've backed Super Mario Sunshine with some degree of confidence... I mean I'd have had this match close (I have Halo beating SMS next round), but yeah, still pretty good about SMS. But yeah, SA2 to me spit in the face of franchise power. A game that not even 40% of the site had any desire to play beat it. That to me suggests that SF4 was anti-vote fueled. Expect the same thing to happen with Halo 3 today. No, that's no typo. Black sheep game will one-up black sheep series on da haterade scale, I'm feelin it. There's also the fact that Halo 3 has never actually looked bad in any polls (and SMS has never looked good). It did well in GotY, and did well in the last game contest. Yeah. Feelin real good about Halo 3 here... I may have underestimated it in my bracket. Crazy, I know! And if nothing else, if I'm going to lose, I'd rather lose backin DA GAME FUEL. Believe. THE YEAR OF HALO BEGINS TODAY. I almost don't want to discuss it because it's devolved into a "it's Halo lol" vs. "it's Super Mario Sunshine lol" thing. I'll give it one last shot though. From any logical standpoint, Halo 3 is the very obvious winner. We're talking about a game that: - Once received less than 3% in a "what's your game of the year" poll, losing to Morrowind, Warcraft 3 and Animal Crossing; - scored 7.5% in a "best Gamecube game of the year" poll, the same poll in which Metroid Prime scored 45%; - is by far the least liked mainline Mario game in the series |
You could make an argument that Halo 3 could beat Super Mario Galaxy
based on how bad that game did last year. If Galaxy, one of the most
beloved Mario titles ever, is bombing all over the place then why would
Super Mario Sunshine stand a god damn chance? Oh, right. Because it's Halo. Halo has been pretty lol over the years so people will pick against it blindly just because it's Halo. I understand this mentality - people were burned picking Chief over Sub-Zero. People got killed by Hayabusa. Starcraft happened. To me, the ideal game to topple a Halo game is a well-liked but not too popular game. The perfect game to mess with a Halo game is something like Pac-Man. Everyone knows it, nobody overly likes it but we're talking about a Halo game. It'll get votes for being Not Halo. But Sunshine? People will vote for Not Sunshine, essentially nerfing Halo's one big negative. Seriously, picking Sunshine over Halo is illogical at best. ..and yet, I am scared to death to actually pick Halo. I see a night match where Sunshine will get the full support of the Nintendo-loving board vote. Halo is the worst night game of all time. If Nintendo gets ahold of this early vote and can carry that lead through the night, Halo will have a hell of a time coming back. "It's freaking Mario" has been dead since 2006 or so, but "it's freaking Halo" still exists and it scares me. It should scare everyone. I'm still picking Halo, but I'll be damn conservative on this pick. I don't trust the people on GameFAQs to do the right thing here and bury the unpopular Mario game. This contest has been Nintendo-free so far and I feel like people are dying to vote for their babydaddy. transience's prediction: Halo 3 with 54.01% Leon’s Analysis Oh boy, by the time this match rolls around, I’m sure it’ll have been debated to death. I think if this were Sunshine vs. Some other game comparable to strength to Halo but not Halo (Looking at the stats, something like…Portal), I don’t think Sunshine gets as much consideration as it does here. After all, this is the site where people would consider taking friggin’ Pac-Man over Halo. People just seem to think that Halo and Master Chief will lose to anything. I know this is a mainline Mario game, but still. Super Mario Galaxy probably doesn’t win this match by a whole lot, and I’d be surprised if Sunshine was that close to it in terms of strength. To me, Super Mario Sunshine is to the Mario series what Final Fantasy X-2 is to the Final Fantasy series. It was a sequel to a hugely successful game that took a different approach that most of the fans really didn’t like. I don’t think it’s as hated as some people think, but it’s not really beloved either. It’s somewhere in the middle. On the other hand, Super Mario Galaxy is a beloved game, and yet it’s still not very popular. I blame Sunshine for that, too, by the way! Sunshine turned so many people off to the series that Galaxy ended up suffering for it. FFX-2 may have had a similar effect for the FF series, moreso than FFXII did. |
Not
much needs to be said about Halo 3. The one thing that may help Halo 3
out is that it’s an Xbox 360 game, and the 360 has been this site’s
favorite current-gen console for the last couple of years. It doesn’t
have the stigma the original Xbox did. It’s hard to say if that will
help it at all, considering all the Halo games seemed to be at around
the same level the last Games Contest. I don’t think it’ll suffer from
massive anti-votes though. Halo will never be a powerhouse around here,
but it’s not a weakling either. I think people are making a mistake
assuming that it is. That being said, I’m not saying Halo is a lock to
win this one because I know better. You can never underestimate the
“It’s freakin’ MARIO” factor either. I think you can overestimate it
though, but we’ll see! Leonhart’s Embarrassing Confession of the Match: Halo is about the only FPS I’ve ever really liked except for GoldenEye. Leonhart’s Vote: Super Mario Sunshine. This is probably our first big debated match of the contest. Should be fun with lots of gloating and whining and other crap! Anyway, here's the way I see it. Mario Sunshine is not nearly as hated as people like to pretend it is. You guys can say what you want, but it's just not. It may not be as strong as Mario 64, well, it isn't as strong as Mario 64, but people still do like it. Meanwhile, Halo has disappointed in every single contest on this site save for one GAME FUEL influenced Master Chief. If this were Halo 1, I might give pause here, but it's not even Halo 1, it's Halo 3. I'm "fairly" confident that Sunshine takes this. I'm not going to go nuts if Halo 3 does manage to win, but I'm feeling good about picking Sunshine and that's what we're sticking with. I do think, however, that whatever game does end up winning, will win comfortable. Ulti-style blowout.
