I hate Pokemon! The board loves it, though. It's the stats topic that kinda has an anti-Pokemon thing, but I think that's actually evened out, if not favoring Pokemon.

Legend of Dragoon, IMO, is the underdog going against Uncharted 2. It's already picking up the votes. It's not near Uncharted 2's of course, but I'm not giving up on LoD yet. It has a chance.

yeah, this is around a 60% win depending on what happens overnight. if LOD does indeed die overnight then great, but once the bracket vote wears off this'll probably be a lot closer.

Heh, I was kinda worried about my percentage prediction for this match after the freeze, but as long as Uncharted 2 doesn't go too crazy in either direction, I should get the accuracy point here!

What Happened: Batman has no problem with Psychonauts, and then TF2 beats Fable after a day-long struggle

Why it Happened: Psychonauts just isn't strong, which is why Batman beat it. As for the next match, Fable is most likely the stronger game here, but thanks to it being a close match, rallying kept TF2 ahead for pretty much the entire match.

What will Happen: Batman shouldn't have that much trouble with TF2.

Sonic Adventure 2 vs Street Fighter 4

Wow, what a wild start to the season. And what's this, the next three matches are all awesome? I must have died and gone to heaven!

(Speaking of awesome, what a great match pic.)

Now then, respect for the Street Fighter series is currently at an all time low. After getting slapped in the face by 2D Sonic and then pushed around for 12 hours by Persona of all things, I understand where that lack of respect is coming from. And getting more than doubled by Resident Evil in the Favorite Capcom Series poll a little while back sure didn't help it save any face. But all that being said, I do think SF is an entity that performs considerably better in a 1v1 setting, and so I'd call it a mistake to discount this upset entirely. Let's not forget that in a head to head matchup, SF split the vote with the Resident Evil series 50/50. (With the help of an enormous pic advantage, but STILL.) And despite all the angst and (hilarious!) outrage caused by its defeat back in 2004, Super Mario RPG is at the very least a heck of a lot stronger than Persona!

"But Ngamer!", I hear you shouting, "This is Street Fighter FOUR. It's going to be way weaker than 2 or the SF series as a whole!" Okay, I'll give you that- but for whatever reason I've got a hunch that the falloff between 2D Sonic and SA2 is going to be way, way worse. I just have this nagging feeling that, even though there wasn't anything wrong with the game itself, voters are going to turn their backs on SA2 in droves just because... well honestly, a Sonic game as the best of the last decade? I mean you look at the last 8 years and it's like, even Michael Phelps would lose a few races with that many anchors hanging off him!

Maybe I'm just overthinking this one (it's happened once or twice), but my gut is screaming "watch out, this will be way closer than SF2/Sonic 1 implies", to the point where I'd have to seriously consider the upset in a Night Match. Luckily if there's one thing you can rely on it's SF underperforming in the daylight, so instead let's go with a nice, conservative

Another Games Contest, another year where SF will inevitably disappoint. In 2009, SF2 got stomped by Sonic 2, and the game we’ll be seeing today, SF4, needed a last minute push to beat Persona 4.

I’m pretty high on SA2 due to bias, but it should easily be the strongest non-2D Sonic game. That’s not saying much, but SF4 has never done anything to make itself look like a threat. SF4 should look better this contest thanks to SSF4, but...if I’ve learned anything over the years, it’s that you’re better off picking against Street Fighter in debatable matches.

Lopen’s Analysis

Had I not seen last contest, I would've taken Street Fighter IV to win this easily. I mean SA2 is loathed by the Sonic fanbase to some extent. Some like it, but man, critical reception for SFIV seems a lot better.

Yet, last contest... hmmm... well, Street Fighter IV didn't do quite as bad as I remembered. It squeaked out a win vs Persona 4... but man, they both got doubled by GTAIV. Not exactly inspiring confidence.

Main nail in the coffin, though, is the poll that asked GameFAQers if they “got SFIV”? I think around 60% said they had no interest in it. That to me is fatal, as I think Sonic has a lot more brand name value here. Expecting low votals here, too.

Transience’s Analysis

This was a huge matchup for me when the bracket was released, but the more I think about it the more confident I get.

Street Fighter 4 basically has nothing working in its favour here. The series has repeatedly shown that it's garbage on this site. I don't think the Persona Argument is very valid since Brawl probably hurt SF4 a good bit, but that's still a pathetic showing that no decent game should have to go through. It got absolutely murdered by GTA4, a series that manages to underwhelm you even when your expectations are the floor.

This is a day match, something Sonic is great with. This is Sonic's only 'decent' 3d game and those kinds of games tend to get overglorified. Sonic has become crap here but it's because of stuff like Sonic 2006, Shadow, Unleashed, that stuff. Not because of SA2. If you give people who don't care either way a choice between Sonic and Street Fighter, they're going to pick Sonic. It's just a bigger name.

I'm more interested in SA2 vs. Uncharted and Halo/Sunshine than I am this match. I'm cheering like hell for SF4 but I just don't think it's notable. Yes, it's gotten a new version of the game and yes, it gets more popular over time. But this is a classic Sonic game. Old games do well in this contest thanks to nostalgia. And Sonic's got it.

Finally, a match where I’ve played one of the games involved, and I’ve played both of them, to boot! This is also our first really debatable match of the contest. It’s a Street Fighter game that isn’t Street Fighter II (and nearly got beat by Persona 4 last Games Contest) against a 3-D Sonic game. This feels like an exercise in futility between two storied franchises (Not that either one is a bad game, they’re just not popular here, for one reason or another).

You can’t find any reliable polls on Sonic Adventure 2. You can point to some GOTY polls for SA2B, but ports and remakes never do well here. Dreamcast GOTY polls are totally irrelevant because of how few people here actually owned one, in addition to being 8-10 years old. The common perception is that people don’t like 3-D Sonic (although that’s not stopping people from bucking common perception and picking Sunshine!), but unfortunately, we have zero poll data to confirm this. Seriously, no 3-D Sonic games past SA2B have made it into a GOTY poll. No Sonic Heroes, no Shadow the Hedgehog, no Sonic Unleashed, nothing. Still, Shadow the Hedgehog’s moderate popularity (Stronger than Tails and seems to be at least as strong as Knuckles) has to come from SOMEWHERE (and more than just being a Sonic proxy). 2-D Sonic games haven’t fared that well though, so that also gives me some pause. I don’t think anyone’s picking SA2 over any of the four mainline 2-D Sonic games. I really have no idea what to think of this game.

SFIV’s futility, however, is a bit easier to show.

I could post more than that since seriously any poll you find with SFIV in it makes it look bad. 70% of the site isn’t even interested in buying it? Seriously, that’s worse than World of Warcraft numbers! The rest of it requires little explanation. This site just doesn’t care about fighting games that aren’t Smash Bros. or Street Fighter II, and it doesn’t even care about SFII that much. Remember, it lost cleanly to Sonic 1 twice in the last Games Contest. The question is: Would we expect a greater gap between Sonic 1 and Sonic Adventure 2, or between Street Fighter II and Street Fighter IV? I think it’s the latter, but that’s just my gut instinct. Here’s one thing that makes me hesitate about picking SA2 here: The possibility that maybe there was some sort of SFF between SSBB and SFIV. I’m pretty sure I mentioned this possibility shortly after the match happened, but nobody else really seemed to think much of it. I know they’re two entirely different types of fighting games, but I still think they could appeal to the same crowd somewhat.

So after all that analysis, the point is: Both of these games are probably pretty weak. I’m just not sure which is weaker, but I’m taking Sonic Adventure 2.

Oh god. We already say Sonic beat Street Fighter twice last year, and we also saw Street Fighter nearly lose to Persona. Granted that was original Genesis Sonic, but that was also SF2, which I'd probably take to be stronger than SF4. Yeah, SSF4 has been released since then, but GameFAQs doesn't care about Street Fighter these days. They also don't care about Sonic either, but I think the apathy towards FIGHTAN GAMEZ is higher than that towards Sonic.

I'd love to see Street Fighter pull off a win here, but I really don't think it's happening. You know what the worst part is? Depending on how bad U2 flops (or is flopping as we speak!), SA2 could theoretically make it to the division finals. Gross.

This may be surprising as I’m a Sonic fanboy, but I honestly had Street Fighter IV in my bracket before barely switching to Sonic Adventure 2. (Also I like both games quite a bit)

Many people seem to be very confident on SA2 winning because of SF4’s LOL ALMOST LOST TO PERSONA 4 result.

However, SA2 itself doesn’t have much recent stats so I dunno I don’t feel like SA2 TOTALLY has it. I just feel like it would be kinda weak as well, and maybe I’ve been around too many Sonic 3D haters.

But yeah now I have Sonic Adventure 2 taking it but not by too much.



Crew Consensus: After seeing what Street Fighter IV has done in the past, we’re going with Sonic.
