Team Fortress 2 vs Fable I'm a big fan of Valve and PC gaming who has only played a couple hours of Fable (thanks to Microsoft accidentally releasing F2 for free earlier this week!), so naturally I have TF2 in my bracket. ...and I've felt awful about that pick from day one. Seriously, I have no idea how this game became such a set in stone favorite, considering its never done anything to indicate the least bit of strength. (43% on a KH character seemed decent enough at the time, but after Axel let Dante hang 70% on him the next round, "not so much".) I guess everyone was just scared off by the (admittedly very nice) 4 seed TF2 was able to earn for itself? To me it just seems like backing a (mostly) PC shooter against a multi-million selling RPG on GameFAQs is rarely a good idea. And yes I realize the original Fable was way overhyped and neither has been all that well received by the general gaming public, and I'm not going to deny that Valve's been on a huge upswing in recent years, but heck, Fable 3 comes out next week. Remember what happened the last time Microsoft put a million dollar campaign budget behind the third game in an Xbox-exclusive franchise? But, naaaaay, Fable 3 doesn't have enough GAME FUEL and hype to match the kind of boost Master Chief got that season, and so I can't quite justify this upset. Still, don't say I didn't warn you when this ends up much closer than most are expecting! North Division: Round 1 - Match 4 – (4) Team Fortress 2 vs. (13) Fable Moltar’s Analysis Team Fortress 2 lol valve Fable lol peter molyneux This is a pretty interesting match. If you look at past polls, TF2 has looked weak as hell while Fable looks to have decent strength. Yet the big favorite going into this match is TF2. Why is that? Well, Valve love has grown exponentially over the last few years, and this year has been especially kind to them. TF2 is still very relevant today, whereas Fable is old and busted (yeah I know Fable 3 is right around the corner). Fable isn’t going to roll over and die here, and TF2 doesn’t have the strength to blow it out. However, Deus Ex winning yesterday does give me a little more faith that TF2 can win this match over the more well-known and casual Fable is getting all the love now. Plus, if this match is close, I’m pretty sure the Internet will favor TF2, so either Fable is going to wreck it, or TF2 will squeak by. I’ll bet on the latter. Moltar’s Bracket: TF2 > Fable Moltar’s Prediction: TF2 - 53% Lopen’s Analysis If I didn't have the Internet and predicted this online popularity contest, I'd pick Fable in a rout here. Now, I realize this scenario doesn't make any sense, and so you should now realize that picking Fable makes no sense, by the transitive property of senselessness. Team Fortress 2 should easily win, because it's so much more loved, right? Well, actually, I dunno. I have a feeling that the Team Fortress fanbase is just REALLY LOUD. Its characters and the game itself have always done pretty bad on the site.. and while I don't doubt it's the better game... I'm skeptical. On the other hand, Fable has always done pretty decently in game polls... and it's packin the ultimate x-factor. FABLE 3 HYPE. Oh yeah! You know it. The ads are everywhere! Got second in the most anticipated October game poll too, beating Kirby and Castlevania. Fable's just got the better track record. Though, on a third hand, it's an Internet darling vs Fable, one of the evil minions of Gates. Why am I smelling a rally? I'm gonna stick with Fable here, but... not too confident! Were this a night match, I'd probably get cold feet! Lopen's Prediction: Fable with 54.04% Transience’s Analysis This match kind of confounds me. Fable should be the favourite. TF2, as popular as it is amongst its fanbase, is a multiplayer-only online shooter that's essentially a PC exclusive. You can play it on consoles but it's garbage compared to the real thing. Fable? It's a Western RPG that was released with tons of hype and failed to live up to it... but at least people played it. I would bet that more people have played Fable than TF2 despite TF2 being pretty huge. Fable has a new game coming out next week and Microsoft just recently gave away Fable 2 for free, causing a huge spike in its popularity here. Fable has shown itself to be decent in past polls. TF2 has always been pretty bad, but it's never really gotten a fair chance either. Valve has been absolutely fantastic at supporting the game (I'd call this their main game at this point), but I'm not sure how much that will resonate with our audience. And yet I've always had this weird faith in TF2. I think it's way more popular than anyone will give it credit for. Leon’s Analysis This one worries me, honestly. At first glance, it feels like an obvious pick because of how well Half-Life 2 and Portal have done in these things, but Team Fortress 2 hasn’t really had the same measure of success. Heavy has done really badly in both of his contest appearances, and Spy didn’t do well in his lone appearance (They both got a bit of rallying in their 2010 matches to make them look a little better than the final margin indicates). Team Fortress 2 got tripled by CoD4 in the Games Contest and doubled by D/P/P. These are not encouraging performances. Fable’s a weird one though. If you look at Fable’s GOTY performance, it did horribly. It’s considered one of the most disappointing games of all-time, at least from what I’ve heard. But it’s weird. If you look at the anticipation polls for Fable II and Fable III, it actually does pretty well against decent competition. I don’t know if people who bought the original Fable are just deluding themselves into thinking there will eventually be a good Fable game with all the potential it had or what. Fable II didn’t do that badly in the GOTY poll either. I’m sticking with Team Fortress 2 here, but an upset wouldn’t surprise me. It’ll be interesting to see if Steam or anyone else starts up a rally for it if it gets in trouble here. If it does, that could be a recurring theme for this contest. Leonhart’s Embarrassing Confession of the Match: I haven’t played any of the games in the Orange Box. Leonhart’s Vote: Throwing another bracket vote for Team Fortress 2. Leonhart’s Prediction: Team Fortress 2 with 54.18% Kleenex’s Analysis I can't believe Fable got in over Fable 2. Granted, I haven't played either of them extensively, but I always just assumed Fable 2 was far more popular than the original. Maybe it is! Who knows. Certainly not us. Anyway, I have Valve riding high for a lot of this contest. I don't know if this is a good idea or not, but it's too late to turn back. Not like I'd have a choice even if I wanted too. But regardless of what Valve accomplished in the later rounds, I have a hard time seeing TF2 dropping this match. The site may have a bit of a more accepting tone towards WRPGs these days, but Fable doesn't seem to fit that mold. A quick look at some of the previous polls Fable has been in confirm this. Granted, TF2 didn't look so hot in its one match back in 2009. This might have been due to CoD4 being in the poll, but I don't feel like those two fanbases overlap as much as other games with gunz. But aside from that, Spy put up some pretty decent numbers against Master Chief last year. And I think Valve stuff has been on the upswing since the 2009 contest. Maybe I'm way off and I'll look dumb for having HL2 in the semis! We'll find out in a couple months! Uncharted 2 vs Legend of Dragoon Remember how I have grave doubts about Fallout? You'd have to about triple that to express the bad feeling I have about Uncharted. 31% in a Final GotY sounds fantastic, until you factor in how it was a PS3 exclusive competing against two primarily 360 titles in a poll with Nintendo nowhere to be found. Granted the game has a strong base of support, but I get the sense that it's one of those entrants that will have a hard time cracking 50% on anyone in a 1v1 setting. Not from Halo-style anti voting... more like just general apathy from the huge chunk of the site that hasn't given this new series a test drive yet. And it's going to take alot more than 48% on The Boss to shake me of that notion! The other reason I'm a bit rattled as I try to pin down this Oracle is- what the JUNK happened in that Play In poll? When I saw the options I was pretty confident I'd be watching Legend of Dragoon rolling around on the floor with Fire Emblem and Battlefront fighting over table scraps, yet it somehow topped Ninja Gaiden and the best Mario Kart of the last 13 years... easily! Of course you never want to put too much stock in such a gigantic multiway poll, but clearly this game has an extremely dedicated fanbase that will refuse to let it get blown out. HOWEVER, here's the one point that Uncharted has in its favor, in terms of creating some separation. Play In Poll #2, Legend of Dragoon: 16% in North America, 12% in Asia, 8% in Europe. Not exactly the trend you're looking for when slotted for a Night Match! Look for Uncharted to underwhelm in this one, but with the continental divide at least allowing it to push past the 60 mark. North Division: Round 1 - Match 5 – (3) Uncharted 2 vs. (14) Legend of Dragoon Moltar’s Analysis Uncharted 2 Better not pull a Nathan Drake here Legend of Dragoon oh man that great battle music On some casual site, Uncharted would take this match easy. However, this is GameFAQs, and we love our obscure jRPGs here. It’s pretty sad that Uncharted can’t even be called a 100% lock here, especially after what we’ve seen since this crazy contest started 2 days ago. As Deus Ex, TF2 and low vote totals have proven, being a popular casual game isn’t going to win you the match. Uncharted 2 definitely helped give the series some strength after the first Uncharted barely made a ripple in the water. Nathan Drake went from a complete joke to a not-as-big joke after it. The game also hung with the top dogs in the GotY 2009 poll, so it’s somewhat legit. Hell, if Batman: AA can do well, Uncharted should too, right?.....right? You certainly can’t count out Legend of Dragoon though, especially after Deus Ex. I don’t want to get burned again, and it proved that some people do care after it won its (rather weak) vote-in poll. Still, I’ve got Uncharted going to Round 3, so that GotY poll better mean something (at least it better mean more than a vote-in poll)! Moltar’s Bracket: Uncharted 2 > LoD Moltar’s Prediction: Uncharted 2 - 58% Lopen’s Analysis Uncharted 2 looked like an impact player in the GotY thing, but NATHAN DRAKE LOST TO CATS. Also, The Boss. For some reason, Uncharted didn't get into the last game contest. But Uncharted 2 seemed to get a better reception and came out during a time where PS2 was on the rise, so it shouldn't be that bad. That bein said, I can't help but think Legend of Dragoon has a chance. I had it in my bracket at first. It looked pretty good in the vote ins. It might be one of those games that has become a cult favorite or something despite not being terribly popular when it first came out. Can't really call bias because the only game I hate more in the bracket than Uncharted 2 is Legend of Dragoon, but maybe I'm just doubting Uncharted 2 because it's terrible. Who knows! I don't claim to know who's gonna win this, but I do know that I wouldn't bet against the Valve fanbase. As for Uncharted 2 vs. Legend of Dragoon, we've got the second strongest game from 2009 facing something like the 20th strongest game from 2000. Fortunately for Legend of Dragoon, being old means a hell of a lot in this contest so it actually has a chance of making Uncharted look bad. But is it actually going to? No. Let me get this out of the way: Legend of Dragoon is garbage. It's a third tier RPG on the PS1 and the only reason it has any strength at all is because it's riding the coattails of FF7. Skies of Arcadia would probably beat this game and it's awful. Without the vote-in poll from the other day, nobody even thinks about taking this to win. People have heaped praise upon this game for being able to beat Star Wars: Battlefront 2. Well, congratulations for pulling off that achievement, Legend of Dragoon. |
Uncharted
2's interesting. It could win three rounds or it could really bomb.
People are comparing Drake to Uncharted but that's a big mistake; if
anything, they should look at how far he's come since his first contest
match as a way to gauge Uncharted 2. This game is just huge amongst the
right people. Is it widespread? No, not yet. But it will be one day.
This game is like the RE4 of its system, it just hasn't reached enough
people yet due to its exclusivity. This game will get stronger every
year as more and more people get familiar with the series. *hits reload* TF2 by 37 votes and shrinking, huh. Something tells me no one's gonna read what I just wrote! transience's prediction: Uncharted 2 with 63.43% Leon’s Analysis Man, if not for that vote-in poll, nobody would be giving Legend of Dragoon a chance in this one. I’m still not sure what to make of it myself. Mario Kart DS probably wins that poll if Fire Emblem and Pikmin 2 aren’t in it, although it still wouldn’t win by that much. This site seems to love its PS1 RPGs, even ones like Legend of Dragoon. That kinda worries me about this one. I’m not sure what else to say about this game because that vote-in poll was the only poll it’s been involved in for about 10 years, so the lack of data gives me pause. Vote-in polls are not the most accurate things in the world either, but the fact that it won the thing at all is pretty impressive because it’s a 10 year old RPG not made by Square, and those things usually don’t do well here. Uncharted 2 did really well in last year’s GOTY, but like vote-ins, those things have to be taken with a grain of salt. Still, they’re all we have, so we just have to roll with them. UC2 rocked NSMBWii pretty hard in one poll, and Legend of Dragoon beat MKDS, but not by much. NSMBWii probably wins a match against MKDS, but once again, who can say? MKDS once beat God of War 1 in a GOTY final back in 2005, but what do we make of that now? Anything? That’s what makes this contest so great to follow, but so hard to analyze. We’ve got virtually nothing to go on! Regardless, Uncharted 2 seems to be a pretty safe pick, but Legend of Dragoon still kinda scares me because it had no business winning that vote-in poll. Plus, Nathan Drake doesn’t exactly have a sparkling contest history either! Despite my uncertainty, I feel like if UC2 wins this match, it’ll win fairly easily. Earlier this year he had a...well...moderately less embarassing loss to The Boss. But those are characters and this is games. Uncharted did rather well in the Game of the Year polls. However, after seeing Deus Ex win, it really makes you start to question this match. |

here I am, writing this analysis, contemplating backing my bracket, or
taking Legend of Dragoon to actually win a match. And at this point in
time, I feel like this is pretty much a tossup, but I think Uncharted 2
had more "intangibles" working for it. It's more recent, people are
aware of its existence, and it's not really hated like Rock Band 2 is
hated. Sure it's LOL PS3 EXCLUSIVE, but I think it's got what it needs

Gotta love the Best of 2009 vote, landing in between CoD:MW2 and Dragon Age. Then with Legend of Dragoon we have that Vote-In poll where I was literally shocked that 9635 people not only played Legend of Dragoon but enough to vote for it over all those other games. Why does that crapfest have fans? Anyway we're talking about a Game of the Year contender vs a game that only made the contest via vote-in, so... Uncharted > Legend of boring PS1 RPGs with 64.44% Bracket: Uncharted 2 Guest’s Analysis - kinsho3 My first ever guest write up and it'll focus on a long shot as well. Yeah, that's right, I'm actually picking LoD here to win over Uncharted. I'll try to keep my reasoning here as short as possible. First off, Legend of Dragoon has some strength, shockingly enough. http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=4048 Winning first place in a vote-in with 11 other games (3 of them JRPGs to boot) is not an easy feat. And to those who go 'lolol vote in", some fairly strong characters in the last character battle came from the vote-in, notably Missingno, Mega Man X, Sub-Zero, and Jecht. Like it or not, LoD is not a pushover. Second, I think people are seriously overestimating Uncharted 2's appeal to the GameFAQs community. Action games rarely do well on sites like these. The few that do well enough here have built up their reputation over several years (God of War) or were driven into the spotlight through cross-platform presence and a great marketing campaign (Assassin's Creed). The Uncharted series is still fairly new and the series didn't start hitting the front pages until the sequel came out. Yes, it did well in its respective GOTY poll, but GOTY polls are not good indicators of strength. We've seen time and time again that GOTY polls are heavily influenced by recency. Hell, I'll even show you the perfect example: http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=2622. One more point to make about that GOTY poll - it's arguably the weakest GOTY poll of the decade. Anyway, moving on to my third and final point, Nathan just flat out sucked last contest. lol@me for thinking characters=games, right? No, of course that's not what I'm saying. But action heroes are generally a reliable measuring stick for the popularity of their series. Kratos, Altair, and Dante all demonstrate this. The rule of thumb to follow here is that an action star will always be more popular than his games. If that's true, Uncharted is in for a world of hurt, given Drake's pretty disappointing match-up against the Boss (which had some pathetic votals to boot as well) To be perfectly honest, I fear for LoD. The truth is I really have no concrete idea where it stands strength-wise. With that said, I hope/think it'll be strong enough to kick Uncharted 2 out of this contest.
