From: transience | #027 I blame the contest! From: Ed Bellis | #036 It's okay. Again, I blame the contest too. From: LeonhartFour | #038 no problem From: KleenexTissue50 | #042 see this From: transience | #043 really, what have we learned? 1) a bunch of games suck, 2) FF7 and OoT are in a league of their own and the 20 games under them are a cluster*****. 3) Mario 64 and Mario World are now stronger than Mario 3. 4) RBY was 2004's biggest snub. that's it? I'd even say that 2008 was better than this because at least 2008 had that insanely amazing last week where this contest has had...uh... From: transience | #045 really sad, no way I thought I'd be on the leaderboard after how terrible I thought my bracket was pre-contest and how much red/yellow was on it after the first two rounds --- Moltar Status: complete global saturation Match 61 - Bracket: FF7 > LttP - Vote: SMW (375/512) |
Basically,
the fact that we pretty much knew the games that were going to be there
in the later rounds worked out to our advantage even though we had a
bunch of these worthless matches we didn't have a clue on and got wrong. --- "But you have been given freedom. Freedom to be...outside." "I am lightning...the rain transformed." |
that's
a lot more than the character battle, man. we get something like
"Snake's strong now" and it's some huge deal. we get that with multiple
games and we don't care? ehh. --- xyzzy http://penny-arcade.com/images/2009/20090603.jpg |
I
think we care. It's just the way that we found out sometimes. Watching
Snake beat Cloud and then watching Kirby beat Sonic, and that was just
like, "Whoa." Seriously, name a big upset this contest. I can only think of Mario 64 > Chrono Trigger, honestly. --- "But you have been given freedom. Freedom to be...outside." "I am lightning...the rain transformed." |

Ngamer's Rebellious Writeup Oh man, this love-hate relationship with Brawl is just too funny. From last place by a mile during the overnight to looking like Ocarina Reborn the entire afternoon... jeez! Finally we get to see a monumental Day Vote comeback this season- too bad MGS had to spoil it with that strong SNV that seems to bail out this series whenever a result is at all questionable. As for my prediction yesterday, I guess it wasn't THAT bad- sure I underestimated MGS4, but at least I was right on the money about TP hanging tough with Brawl and RE4 refusing to fold no matter what competition you put in front of it. Actually this was a heck of a match, wouldn't have expected 4 games this powerful to give us such an entertaining almost-25/25/25/25 result. Hmm, score one for Ed Bellis (we can afford to- it would be his first score of the year)! Moving on to FF7 versus The S/NES Gang. Let's start with the obvious: FF7 will look like a destroyer of worlds, going to town on these guys with over 40 and almost certainly increasing its % from last round now that FF6 is out of the way. (If 7 allows OoT to outscore it once again this round despite the perfect setup, I'll have to shake my head in disgust!) Also obvious (I think?): Mario 3 reverses the most recent result by taking down SMW thanks to LttP being around to soak up some of that SNES love. Basically this situation is the polar opposite of last time; now World's recency doesn't do it a bit of good since both LttP and FF7 are newer, while M3's iconic/nostalgic/historic aura will be working overtime. In other words, the only thing to talk about is the battle for 2nd place, and... man, I really wish I could go with Mario 3. From one perspective the upset makes sense: LttP > Zelda 1, yes, but is it really ahead by THAT much? And this time around the Mario options won't be throwing 12% of the vote away on M1... plus wouldn't it make sense for Mario to hold up better in the presence of FF than Zelda does? I kind of think so. But then Mario 64 has to go and burst my bubble. Even if Mario 3 >> M64 (probably not true- got to imagine they're nearly neck and neck these days after what 64 did to CT), 64 had FF7 plus SNES-era FF6 around to hold back LttP last time yet it couldn't get the job done. Now that 6 has been replaced with another Mario option, its got to be lights out. Then again, its not like Mario hasn't shocked us 100 times already this year despite unfavorable circumstances. And whatever happened to all that "with 95% playrates, same series LFF doesn't matter!" talk from rounds past? But, nah, still can't pull the trigger. For the record though, after all we've seen this season I WOULD be taking Mario 3 > LttP here with any non-Nintendo platformer in the fourth position! Also I think that in any case, the Marios stick closer to Zelda than most are giving them credit for. And that should result in a final percentage right around Final Fantasy VII - 42.01% The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - 21.75% Super Mario World - 18.40% Super Mario Bros. 3 - 17.84% Wait, what the JUNK? In my rushing around last night I apparently forgot to swap Mario 3 into 3rd place in my Oracle pick. So I'll, uh, stick with this. Crap! --- The Guru ROCKS, son! http://thengamer.com/guru/ (thengamer.com/xstats & board8.wikia.com aren't awful either) |

Actually, swapping those numbers wouldn't have helped one bit! --- thelefty for analysis crew 2008 imo -tranny I have a third degree burn in flame-o-nomics -Sir Chris |
The Fill-in, Act IV I'll get the assurances out of the way first - OoT and Brawl are absolute locks for first and last, respectively. As for second, FFX is effectively a lock. MGS4 couldn't beat Brawl on its own power, so in an essential one-on-one with FFX, I can't see it doing anything other than coming out with the short end of the stick. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - 38.83% Final Fantasy X - 23.45% Metal Gear Solid 4 - 21.98% Super Smash Bros. Brawl - 15.74% --- thelefty for analysis crew 2008 imo -tranny I have a third degree burn in flame-o-nomics -Sir Chris |

The only two really really great parts I liked about this contest: Tales of Symphonia getting out of round 1. Pokemanz RBY kicking ass (especially round 1) 2004 had... well, as far as great moments maybe only Frog vs Master Chief (even if it came up short) counts. But overall I'd say it was... a bit better, at least. Maybe because it's the first character contest I really paid a good amount of attention to throughout --- No problem! Melee Round 5 - 21.80% vs. Ocarina of Time, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Super Smash Bros. Brawl The Forgotten And here we have our first totally predictable four-way final. I laugh at all of you upset-hunters, because the cookie prevails! I have FF7 > OoT in my bracket. If this were a 1v1 contest, I would have gone with OoT, as I thought it was stronger than FF7 these days. However, the other games in this match would have swung the result in FF7’s favor. I figured it would have an easier time beating down FFX than OoT would with LttP. This should be a close one, and while FF7 should be the favorite, OoT has a great shot. Pre-round 2, OoT was looking great, but since its Round 3 match, FF7 has been beasting the other top games. OoT has beaten up strong competition too, but I’d rank FF7’s opponents over OoT’s. Plus, there’s LttP and FFX here. I’d be surprised if they ended up with 30% combined here, but they are going to hold back the top two games a little bit. I still believe that LttP will hurt OoT more than FFX hurts FF7. LttP is stronger than FFX, pre-dates OoT, and is 2D, which separates it more from OoT and gives it the benefit of a slightly extended audience. On the other hand, many FF fans started with FF7 and played FFX after, and I can see them easily abandoning the latter in order to vote for the game that got them hooked on the franchise. Zelda’s saving grace is that the two games probably take over half the vote here. That should keep OoT close and gives it a shot at winning. Still, I’m going with the former champ for the same reason I took it to win here 3 months ago. Moltar’s Bracket Says: FF7 > OoT Moltar’s Prediction is: FF7: 38% - OoT: 36% - LttP: 14% - FFX: 12% |
Heroic Mario’s Analysis Finals time. This contest has been something, definitely not one of my favorites. It was around the start of Round 3 where my interest in it jus waned to the point that I would forget a contest match was even happening -- and subsequently forget to send in some analyses! It was decent if you're into Nintendo domination, or Pokemon, but otherwise it was no good. I can't even remember one good match we had this year. Character four-ways better than this. Amazingly, the final everyone expected pre-contest is the one we're getting now. Two Final Fantays and two Zeldas. This is about the fairest final you could reasonably expect here, too. Something completely unrelated like Halo and Fallout might be better, but that's not too realistic. LttP and FFX will probably be on the receiving end of some brutal SFF, making the much anticipated FFVII vs. OoT rematch more like a 1v1. too bad this won't be close That's right -- FFVII domination are you ready for this. Time for some bold predix: GameFAQz voters were purposely not voting for FFVII to give the illusion that it may have gotten a tad weaker, or to make Zelda freakz think it was vulnerable, but not come final time. Brace for the biggest final blowout ever Link ain't got nothing on this. So much domination you'll be hearing LATIN blaring on the homepage and the faint sounds of 'OH GOD BUSTER SWORD ALL OVER MY FACE' in the background look for it http://ui21.gamefaqs.com/1460/gfs_54375_1_2.jpg what's that sorry can't hear you over all this buster sword Final Fantasy VII -- 55% Ocarina of Time -- 21% Link to the Past -- 14% Final Fantasy X -- 10% Bracket: Final Fantasy VII > Ocarina of Time Favorite: Final Fantasy VII Lopen’s Analysis Are you flippin kidding me? GameFAQs is a woefully boring place. I.. feel terrible saying this but... bring back the L-Block! Lopen's Prediction: FF7 - 40% Zelda - 35% Weaker FF - 15% Weaker Zelda - 10% Transience’s Analysis Final Fantasy VII is the father of this website. This isn't hyperbole, it's fact. GameFAQs was a small-time thing until Final Fantasy VII came out. If we had stuff like Alexa in 1997, you would have seen the hits jump like 1000% from 1996 to 1997. Most people from Back in the Day came here initially because of FF7. This was *the* place to get information on games, back before there was a sea of information everywhere. Final Fantasy VII was *the* game. GameFAQs and FF7 have a weird symbiotic relationship. How big is Final Fantasy VII to this website? It's been on the GameFAQs top 50 for 3,893 consecutive days. Not once have I seen it dip below 50. Ocarina of Time needed the list to be expanded to 100 before it made it there. How big is Final Fantasy VII? When the writer of the first big FF7 FAQ died suddenly, CJayC wrote a big post on the front page eulogizing him. Seriously. Here it is: 5/19/04 12:30PM Truly A Legend.: It's with a very heavy heart that I must tell you that Chris MacDonald, known to most of you as Kao Megura, passed away earlier this week well before his time. Chris wasn't just a contributor to GameFAQs, he was the contributor. Still one of the most prolific and well-respected contributors to this site, he created probably the most well-known and well-read (and not to mention well-written) FAQs on the whole of the Internet back in 1997 for Final Fantasy VII. That guide alone is still used and credited today as the inspiration for countless authors to follow. From my own correspondence with him, I can also tell you that he was a great guy to get to know. Not merely GameFAQs, not just the Internet, but the world as a whole has lost someone special, and he will be truly missed. I truly believe that GameFAQs as we know it today would not have existed without him. |
Friends, acquaintances, and even those who were just inspired or helped
without ever even knowing him personally who wish to send comments and
rememberances may send them to kao@gamefaqs.com. This mail will go to his family, not to me, so please use it appropriately. Charitable donations can be made to UNICEF. Come on. This would never happen today. Ocarina of Time is a popular game. It has murdered its competition and proven that it is the only game that can even come close to challenging FF7. It has put up performances that even eclipse FF7's at times. The contest would be better off without these two juggernauts making a mockery of every other game in existence. Ocarina of Time vs. Final Fantasy VII is the most anticipated match that I can think of. Link vs. Cloud cannot compare. This is about as big as you can make a popularity contest on a video game website. Final Fantasy VII is undefeated. It has beaten Ocarina of Time in two separate formats. It is almost big enough to take on the entire Zelda series, as Link vs. Cloud suggests. It just received a port to the PS3 and PSP -- this announcement generated more applause at Sony's E3 press conference than anything. Seriously, a port of a twelve year old game. This is what happens when you are bigger than big. Ocarina of Time is liked. Final Fantasy VII is loved. transience's prediction: Final Fantasy VII - 38% The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - 34% The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - 15% Final Fantasy X - 13% Leonhart’s Analysis Final Fantasy VII: Ah, finally, the match this entire contest has been leading up to. In the first two rounds, OoT looked better than FFVII. In the last three rounds, it has been more even, with a marginal advantage to Final Fantasy VII. It’s hard to gauge their performances though due to the fact that a lot of their matches had SFF/LFF in them. I think Final Fantasy VII looks better as the competition gets tougher, and the performances seem to indicate that. It hasn’t fallen below 40% the entire contest, though that’ll probably change tomorrow. I still think it beats Ocarina of Time though. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past: Here is Zelda #2, but the only problem is that Zelda #1 is in the same poll. A Link to the Past has looked good this contest, but never great. 36% and 34% on FFVII are not extremely impressive performances for a game that was thought to be #3 on this site. A lot of people reference the old Zelda game polls to say that LTTP will stand up to OoT, but I don’t know. Those old Mario polls said Mario 3 beats World and Mario 64 easily, and we saw how that turned out. The polls are out of date and things have changed a lot since then. I expect Ocarina of Time to beat LTTP pretty handily here. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: I’m not sure what can be said about this match that hasn’t already been said, and I’m not even sure how to analyze it. Thanks to the divisions by generation gap, we haven’t really seen how FFVII stands up to new games (other than Mario 64), and we haven’t seen how OoT stands up to old games. There definitely seems to be a gap there. FFVII has looked better overall, but that may be due to the fact that it’s been facing old games. Plus, this may not even be a fair fight anyway. It may depend on who can SFF which fellow game the hardest, and most would say that OoT can’t SFF LTTP as hard as FFVII can FFX. We’ll see. Final Fantasy X: And here’s FF #2, facing off against FF #1. This should be ugly. Hopefully, it can stay above 10%. It’d be great if it ended up beating LTTP here, though that may be better for Ocarina of Time anyway. Just give us a good match here for the finals! And with that, my time with the 2009 Games Contest Crew ends. It’s been great, and thanks for reading (those of you who did)! |
Leonhart’s Vote: Final Fantasy X! I can’t NOT vote for the best game ever in the finals, and boy is it going to need it! Leonhart’s Prediction: Final Fantasy VII – 37.77% A Link to the Past – 12.23% Ocarina of Time – 37.76% Final Fantasy X – 12.24% Guest’s Analysis - KleenexTissue50 Dunno if anyone was lined up to do this, but here's one if no one has! So, this is pretty much what we've been waiting 5 years for. Everyone knew the finals was going to come down to Final Fantasy 7 and Ocarina of Time (plus whatever other games got dragged along for the ride). Throughout the entire contest, both games have been trying to one-up each other and they've both done a pretty good job at putting who takes a rematch up for grabs. But that's in a one-on-one environment - this is something completely different. This is probably just about the "fairest" finals we could have asked for. The number 1 and number 2 games from the top two series on the website. One on one, FF7 and OoT are probably virtually even, so what's going to make the difference here is their baggage in Link to the Past and Final Fantasy X. All contest, I've been a big proponent of LttP. It's one of my favorite games, and I think it still sits in the #3 spot overall, even if not by much. I'm psyched that it made the finals and that's good enough for me. Because the fact of the matter is that LttP is going to get beaten like a red-headed stepchild here. Favorite game in the series polls be damned, the lesser Link is going fold here, and badly. As the years go by, less and less people have played it, and it's in danger of losing to "newer' stuff that the people who visit this side grew up with - see Mario 64. Final Fantasy X, on the other hand, is more recent and well-liked. A lot of people were disappointed with its performances the past few rounds, but I think it's going to hurt FF7 more than LttP hurts OoT. So what does this mean? The MEGATON of MEGATONs. I rather liked that there was one beacon of hope where Zelda didn't reign supreme. Link wins every character contest aside from L-Block and that fluke Cloud win. Zelda won the series contest. But FF7 was the king of the games contest. While it's true that FF7 and OoT are undesirable outcomes, I'd argue that FF7 is actually the better result for variety in the grand scheme of things.
