damn near unplayable.

When I said this...I had like...7% in mind.

Matches Completely Correct - 2
Matches Partially Correct - 4
Matches Completely Wrong - 0

What Happened - Yes, we have reached a point in the contest with a game can get to Round 2 and take in less than 10% of the vote. SMB3 just killed everything here.

Why it Happened - SimCity was looking good until overnight, when Monkey Island just took charge over in Europe. SimCity was then unable to capitalize on the day vote. Tecmo just never had a chance.

What Will Happen - Sonic/SF2/SMB3/Monkey Island, Europe won't save you now.

Division 2: Round 1 - Match 8 – Crystalis vs. Final Fantasy IV vs. Mega Man 3 vs. River City Ransom

Moltar’s Analysis

Crystalis
2004 Results: N/A

Apparently it’s the name of a sword.

Final Fantasy IV
2004 Results: N/A

It’s NOT the true second Final Fantasy game it’s actually the FOURTH stupid amerikans

Mega Man 3
2004 Results: N/A

Well, we saw MM2 already (lol). How with the follow-up fare?

River City Ransom
2004 Results: Lost in Round 1 against Pong

The old-school beat-em-up is back…to probably lose again.

Crystalis is a lock for fourth here. While cult RPGs tend to do better than usual in this format, it won’t help if the cult RPG is too cult to even draw 5%.

RCR should fare a bit better….like 6% better but they it’s an improvement.

So the match is between FF4 and MM3. Both of them are moving on, but the question is which game takes first. Final Fantasy is the bigger series, but MM3 should be a top tier MM game, while FF4 is a third-tier FF game. Still, being a third-tier FF game means you have some significant strength, enough to put FF4 clearly above MM3.

MM2’s dud last week definitely doesn’t help MM3’s case either. I originally thought this match would be fairly close. Now? FF4 is going to take this easily. The margin by which it does so is important though. The following matches it has are among the most important in the Contest.

Moltar’s Bracket Says: FF4 > MM3

Moltar’s Prediction is: FF4: 52% - MM3: 33% - RCR: 11% - Crystalis: 4%

Heroic Mario’s Analysis

24 is coming on time to make this quick

After MM2's poor showing against Pac-Man earlier this round, I don't think anyone has any faith in MM3 managing to do anything here. There's the argument that the pic hurt MM2, and I can buy that with how bad it was, but I don't think it would have made a complete world of difference -- MM2 still would've been too close to Pac-Man to be worth much.

I've always thought FFIV was going to take first here, and by a wide margin, even before Mega Man flopped. It's got the Final Fantasy name, it's got the fanbase, and it recently had a remake that everyone loved. I don't think it's going to be a top tier FF, but there's no reason to expect it to do any worse than FF1, which just had a good showing earlier today.

This won't tell us much about the SFF match in round 2, but if FFIV can pull a good 50%+ that should be enough dominance to show it's no weakling.

Final Fantasy IV -- 54%
Mega Man 3 -- 30%
River City Ransom -- 10%
Crystalis -- 6%

Bracket: Final Fantasy IV > Mega Man 3
Favorites: Final Fantasy IV > Mega Man 3

Lopen’s Analysis

Another two horse race... I'm almost tempted to go on about how BARF!worthy it is that River City Ransom (I love it to death don't get me wrong), the game that lost to PONG, got in this contest instead of a Double Dragon representative for the second time strong, but I won't.

Coming into this contest, I wasn't sold on FF4's strength, and to be frank, I'm still not. Unfortunately for Mega Man 3, I'm not sold on its strength anymore either after that turd Mega Man 2 laid down. Now, mind you, I still don't buy that all Mega Man games are fodder, and Mega Man 3 will no doubt look stronger than Mega Man 2 here, but I can only blame White and Nerdy Man for so much. Forgetting the picture for a minute, Mega Man 3 might be a stronger game than Mega Man 2-- it's always been a toss up to me and I think it is to the fanbase as well.

I had Mega Man 3 taking first here, seemed juicy at the time. But I can't really make the call for it in good conscience here. I do think it will be close enough that people will stop calling FF4 a mortal lock for next round, though. Should be fun.

Lopen's Prediction: (who likes recycled percentages I sure do)
Final Fantasy 4 – 41.04%
Mega Man 3 – 36.75%
Whatever the other game is – 12.09%
BARF! - 10.12%

Transience’s Analysis

Today's match is dangerous. Anybody that takes this result seriously -- and there will be a lot of people who mistakenly do -- are going to think FF4 is a powerhouse. Consider what we know so far from this contest:

- old NES games are just getting murdered here unless they have a name behind them. Needless to say, Crystalis and River City Ransom don't have this. Crystalis could be the weakest game in the contest; River City Ransom lost handily to Pong. Pong.
- Mega Man 2 is the only 'name' that has bombed relative to expectations; MM3 is probably equal to MM2 or slightly weaker.
- brand name loyalty has been huge; there is no brand loyalty stronger than Final Fantasy. In the absence of strong games, what do you think regular people are going to vote for?

The conclusion to all of this is pretty clear: FF4 is going to eat this poll alive. It doesn't really mean anything at all though. FF4 could push 60% in this poll just due to complete apathy towards the other options. It doesn't mean it's going to beat Mario World or stand up to FF1. The only thing that will make me even pay attention to this result is if FF4 bombs or if Mega Man 3 does well. If FF4 rises to heaven, there won't be a damn thing worth taking seriously. Trust me on this. Do not overreact.

Crystalis made it!
the best action RPG
is gonna get killed

transience's prediction:

Final Fantasy 4 - 55%
Mega Man 3 - 34%
River City Ransom - 8%
Crystalis - 3%

Leon’s Analysis

Crystalis: You know, I’ve heard good things about Crystalis, but I’ve never played it. Again, this is another one of those situations where it’s difficult to analyze because I don’t know how popular it really is or was back in the day. Although I don’t suppose it matters because Mega Man 3 would have to drop a major stink bomb for Crystalis to advance, which I don’t see happening. It should get third place though.

Final Fantasy IV: Fresh off of its umpteenth port/remake, Final Fantasy IV enters the Games Contest! It should win this match easily due to the brand name, the fact that this is a game that has been played and well-liked by many both in the past and in recent days with the ports and remakes, and because I don’t think Mega Man 3 will be that strong anyway. I still can’t figure out why Cecil keeps bombing, especially since Kain and Rydia did well enough in their own right. I guess he just doesn’t have anything that makes people think, “Ah, this is the FFIV guy.” Who knows? That’s a topic for another time.

Mega Man 3: I actually played through the old NES Mega Mans for the first time (Well, I haven’t finished 6 yet) within the last couple of months or so. I had played several of them before, but had never beaten any of the NES ones, just games from MM7 and beyond, including games in the MMX series. MM3 is pretty good, but MM2 is easily the best one. Just throwing that out there! Anyway, the Mega Man series did well for itself in the Series Contest, but as I mentioned in my Mega Man 2 write-up, I think the whole is worth much more than the individual parts themselves. I can’t see any one game being that strong, but it doesn’t need to be to take second place here. I don’t think it’s got enough to snag first place though.

River City Ransom: Argh, why is a game that only got 32% on Pong back in this contest, and why wouldn’t you people agree to have it replaced with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?!

Leonhart’s Vote: Final Fantasy IV, you spoony bard! What do you think?
Leonhart’s Prediction:
Crystalis – 17.57%
Final Fantasy IV – 41.14%
Mega Man 3 – 28.12%
River City Ransom – 13.17%

Ed Bellis’s Analysis

Another easy match to call in terms of which two place… OR IS IT

Crystalis. As the original Prince of Persia shatters fodder records, I have to wonder if Crystalis can’t do the same. Prince of Persia had a small degree of name recognition attached to that and still couldn’t break 5 percent; Crystalis has none of that. If it doesn’t end up bottom in the contest I’ll be very surprised.

Final Fantasy IV. With a thousand ports under its belt, FF4 should prove, at the very least, more popular than FF1. I doubt it would have the strength to challenge, say, FF8, but all it needs to take first here is to be stronger than Mega Man 3, which given how MM2 performed earlier shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

Mega Man 3. Goddammit Mega Man. Mega Man 2’s flopping pretty much ruined one of the themes of my bracket, which was Mega Man games kicking ass both robotic and non-robotic. If Mega Man 2 can barely ward off Pac-Man, Mega Man 3’s got no chance whatsoever of beating FF4.

River City Ransom. Lost to Pong. Nuff said.

This match is kind of crappy, looking over it.. FF4 should really clean house here, with Mega Man 3 coming in second. The other two games might have some upset potential if anyone gave a rat’s rump about either of them. >_>

Prediction: how many sballen cosplay topics will we see tomorrow my guess is at least five

Crystalis with 3.45%
Final Fantasy IV with 54.91%
Mega Man 3 with 30.20%
River City Ransom with 11.44%

Guest’s Analysis - WarThaHedgehog

Ok, first off, let's look at some simple numbers. One-on-one, Final Fantasy IV has a 50% chance to beat anyone, and as favorite against Mega Man 3, it has an 83 and two-thirds% chance to win. However, after Mega Man 2's falter, Mega Man 3's a big underdog, so add it's 50% to Final Fantasy IV's 83 and two-thirds% and you got 133.33%. But Crystalis and River City Ransom are fodder, so they're not even going to show up. So if you add each of their 25% chances to win to Final Fantasy IV's 133 and two-thirds%, and you've got 183 and two-thirds%.

HUHdiction?
Final HUHtasy HUH: 183 and two-thirds%
MegHUH Man 3: 50%
CrysHUHlis: 3.55%
River City RansHUHm: 6.55%

I seriously didn't know the fourth game when I did that write-up. I just assumed it wouldn't be total garbage.

I still wouldn't have put it so low-- I thought Crystalis had some fanbase or something... NES game right? This Prince of Persia thing is one of a kind I think. PoP is not good for any name recognition with SMW and FF there. Oh and plus I don't think FF4 is gonna be that strong. Crystalis will flirt with 9% at least...!

Ngamer's Rebellious Writeup

Hey hey, 135k votes for this one- that's more like it! That pounds the old mark (Zelda/Metroid) for this year by a full 17k and hopefully signals that people are going to be involved with this Contest site-wide from here out, now that the oldest and lowliest of the bottom feeders have been weeded out. If you want impressive votals, always schedule a Final Fantasy vs Zelda/Mario match, that's my motto. Speaking of which, it's looking like Mario put up ~56% on FF directly- a slight underperformance for Mario based on my guess, but it doesn't really tell us too much either way, especially not with all the (presumably) SMW votes that were sucked up by those late-night 4chan rallies. I'm still of the opinion that FF1 is going to hold up better than most expect next round, but yeah, not all that much to go on from this result. All we can really do is to give three cheers to PoP for keeping the day interesting with its run at the title of "weakest entrant of all time"!

Speaking of that epic R2 FF1/FF4 clash... well, let me clarify. I'm sure it's not going to be an "epic" in the traditional sense, as neither are powerhouses and like most SFF matches whatever leads after 10/15 minutes will almost certainly sail on to a win, BUT, it becomes epic just because so much is riding on that result. If 1 or 4 is clearly superior to the other, the winner gets handed probably the easiest road to Round Five in Contest history thanks to the Nintendo-rific upper half of this bracket. Let's see if tonight's result will help indicate which of the two is going to have the upper hand!

I'm having a very time decided where to go with my percentages on this one, and it's actually because of the bottom two games. I'm almost certain that one of them is going to tank horribly and perhaps even challenge PoP's new mark, but I just can't decide which. Crystalis would seem the natural choice given that it's going to be RPG-smashed by an old school FF title, but surely it at least has a hardcore fanbase that isn't going to abandon it for anything? Sure it will be super small, but I'd think it would have to be big enough to save it from a PoPing. So maybe RCR is the better choice- after all, it got absolutely trampled by Pong, a game that we now realize is extremely bad fodder itself. Guess I'll just have to pick them both to do "very bad" but not "super bad" and hope for the best.

As regards MM3, bah... I actually picked it to win here in my initial gut bracket, figuring this would be an up year for MM and that FF4 would lose a small percentage to Crystalis. After MM2's bomb I'm very glad I flip flopped on that one, but even so I'm not entirely sold on FF4. I've just got this feeling that old Mega Man couldn't possibly be as weak as Pong made it look, especially in light of Sonic's good showing, and so I'm glad that this time around MM isn't looking at a massive pic disadvantage. In fact, it actually dominates this pic- RCR looks like total junk, Cry I guess catches the eye a little but is so unrecognizable that I doubt it matters, and I don't think that FF4 is going to blast this poll like people are talking, not with it sporting Amano art (or something similar) like that. That's kind of old fashioned look always stings FF characters, and I'm banking on tonight not being an exception.

So with MM looking stylin' I think it manges to hold that old and washed out looking FF under 50% and win back at least a small token of respect for the classic series. I'll go with...

Final Fantasy IV - 49.92%
Mega Man 3 - 34.36%
River City Ransom - 8.39%
Crystalis - 7.32%

Hm. Seems pretty solid!

Cool, things are looking pretty decent for once! Europe will wake up in a few hours to crunch MM and bolster FF, but even so it shouldn't end up THAT far over 50, and when the Americans come back they will hopefully push MM and drop RCR back to where I placed it in the process. Should have trusted tranny when it came to Cry though...

Are guests that have already done a round 1 writeup allowed to do another? Or is demand high?
