It's performance against SMRPG isn't bad. Not top-tier or anything, but it doesn't need to be. The Mario RPG that got doubled against Chrono Trigger? You know, SMW is projected to double SFII based on the stats straight up, but seriously, those stats are so wonky that they're worthless. Nevertheless, getting doubled by Mario World = Midtier --- http://www.court-records.net/animation/phoenix-superobjection.gif |

The Mario RPG that got doubled against Chrono Trigger? So...we're not going to assume there was a little bit of SFF between two popular SNES RPGs? Nothing at all? Alright then. --- http://thengamer.com/guru/ |

Ewww...looks like tomorrow may be the first day I don't get 100% on :( I did SF2/Civ. I went through these kind of fast, and my thought process was: 1. Castlevania 3 - Castlevania is popular, but people don't remember 3 as much. 2. Civ - People on PC boards go nuts over this and it typically falls in at #1 over all games. But seeing as this site is mostly console gamers and especially young gamers, this was a dumb pick on my part. 3. Sonic - I debated between this and Civ being #2. Sonic is liked, but I was thinking too far along the PC-crowd. 4. SF2 - If you put each of these games in the time that they existed, SF2 is by far the most popular. With SF4 just coming out, I thought it would have the overall popularity to take #1. I still think this may hold, but I'm screwed on Civ :P |
transience | Posted 4/10/2009 10:30:04 PM | message detail | filter | #265 |
good logic there - Civ may impress but I don't think it has a shot at first. SF2/Sonic is who knows. I get the feeling this match isn't going to be close.. one of them is going to bomb (or do well, it's all the same). I'm just not sure which it will be. --- xyzzy |

Ngamer's Rebellious Writeup Bah, there goes my chance at the Perfect Bracket. And I was sooo close! *cough* As I briefly touched on though, losing these two Contra points doesn't bother me overly much since the remainder of my bracket relies on both Nintendo SFF not being quite so brutal as back in the day and Metroid in general being well-suited to the 4way environment, two ideas that you can make a better case for after seeing this result. So yeah, I'm not going to lie and say I didn't cry myself to sleep last night, but you have to understand it was a good cry. Moving on, we've got a real treat in store for tonight- a matchup between two relatively strong, relatively evenly matched games that are independent enough of the fodder below them for this result to just maybe be as legit as a straight up 1v1. In other words, an extremely rare occurrence for the SB era! My fellow crewmates have already done a fine job of going through the points in favor for either of these two games, so let me just quickly say that I agree with what appears to be the general sentiment. Namely, that Sonic's character appeal and name value would have made this an easy victory for him 3 or 4 or 5 years back, but that now the ball seems to be almost entirely in SFII's court. Sonic Team has been looking worse and worse in each Character Battle since '05 and frankly I can't see why a classic era Sonic game would be expected to perform better than a classic era Mega Man title in the year 2009, and so I'd be very nervous if I were a Sonic fan in the wake of that MM2... unpleasantness. On the flip side Street Fighter is more relevant at this very moment than it has been at any point this decade, Ryu has proven himself to be a dangerously independent entry that thrives in this LFFfest of a format, and then the bracket comes out and we see that SFII has drawn the most fortuitous placement since... well, since 2007 Ryu. Check out this yellow brick road to the 5th round: an easy advancement over Castlevania/Civ, an easy win against a Sonic that gets early 90s platformer'd to death by Mario 3, then a perfect chance to capitalize on the Mario 3/SMW/MM3 split (assuming FF1 spoils FF4's chances), and THEN a chance to play the sore thumb spoiler once again in a totally insane Zelda 1/Mario 1/Mario 3 battle. I'll give you that SFII isn't honestly all that strong, but I think that Ryu '07 and Kirby '08 proved that in this format, you don't need to be as long as you continue to draw the right opponents. So that's what my bracket is banking on, and it all starts with a convincing win over Sonic 1! All that's left is to take a look at this match pic before picking my percents. Hm... Civ just fades into the background, what a nothing of a pic, CV is too mashed together, I love Ryu and Ken in their poses with the classic SFII logo, but I have to admit what catches the eye here is that large and in charge Sonic. And since its best chance in this one is to play up the "Sonic vs Ryu" angle, I'm going to have to give S1 a little bit more credit than I'd been planning. Let's go with, oh say Street Fighter 2 - 36.76% Sonic the Hedgehog - 33.23% Castlevania III - 19.79% Civilization - 10.13% Yeah, that seems about right. Could definitely stand to see SF2 blow it out of the water by even more though! (PS - Alright, so actually I got cold feet and only took SF2 to make the 4th round this year, not the semi-finals. I still maintain that's one of the smartest upset routes you could have gone with though!) --- The Guru ROCKS, son! http://thengamer.com/guru/ (thengamer.com/xstats & board8.wikia.com aren't awful either) |

Yeah, I'm chalking civ up as my first big mistake. I was able to
realize one mistake and choose Metroid over Contra. Even though looking
at them from 2009 eyes Contra looks like it was put together better,
even at the time they were released Metroid was a bigger name. And the
under-20 crowd (most of this site's visitors, I imagine) will barely
remember Contra or any game in the series. I generally took the 10-year old factor into account (a 10 year old voting here would be born in 1999 and probably not remember much before *2002-2003*). That alone will push Sonic higher, and bury Civ. The really interesting battle is the following day: SMB 3 will win by one of the largest margins (I bet over 70%). But out of Sim City, Tecmo Super Bowl, and Secret of Monkey Island, who the heck wins? I bet Sim City, and still can't see either of the other two taking it down, but you never know. Monkey Island has no shot. It's an old game, which hurts it. There hasn't been a monkey island game since 2000. Almost no one from the 18-and-under crowd would have played it. And it's an adventure game, to boot. One of my favorite genres, but one of the least popular in the mainstream. That leaves Sim City and Tecmo Super Bowl. It's gonna be close, but Sim City and The Sims have spanned enough generations to cause Sim City to pull through, imo. Even those that have fond memories of both of the originals (although there were at least two Tecmo Bowl games before Super came out) would probably lean towards Sim City. At least we have an easy choice the following day, with FF and SMB fans more-than-likely destroying all competition :D |
KamikazePotato | Posted 4/10/2009 10:52:27 PM | message detail | filter | #269 |
There is an argument being thrown around that,
depending on how badly SMB3 kills that group, Monkey Island has a
decent shot at sneaking into 2nd simply because it has way more
dedicated fans than the other two. --- http://thengamer.com/guru/ |

DpOblivion's Unofficial Can't Give a **** About this Match Right Now Analysis As big a Sonic fanboy as I am, in my initial gut reaction bracket I put Street Fighter II over Sonic. Then in my main bracket, some long time after that, I still put SFII over Sonic without much thought. Then I realized it the other day, figuring I would have put Sonic the second time through and I was surprised to see I didn't. Basically, SF seems to do well in this format, plus SFIV hype, and Sonic sucks in this format. I really wish I had the time to look into this further and see what I should have, but it's just not happening. I'm just getting settled in after flying off the road and totaling my car tonight, so yeah, whatever, this is the best you're getting (and quite frankly, I don't even know why I bothered to give this much). Dp's bracket says: Street Fighter II > Sonic the Hedgehog Dp's prediction is: ? Confidence Rating: N/A ****ty Oracle prediction that should be ignored: SFII - 36% Sonic - 36% CV3 - 18% Civ. - 10% --- Martin Brodeur: 556 career wins -- Patrick Roy: 551 career wins Best Game Ever 2009 - See profile for printable brackets |
