The Hero of Time. He’s always on some awesome adventure, saving the world from evil. There’s always a magnificent story to be told when it comes to Link. However, the greatest of all is how he almost missed the Character Battle VI. The Setting - The morning of his Round 1 match Link: Ahh, a new day has begun. I wonder what I’ll do today. *Link heads to the kitchen and checks the refridgerator for breakfast* Link: Running low on milk, I should go to the store. I’m low on rupees though…so tired of cutting down those damn bushes for a rupee…I should just sell myse- *Phone rings, Link picks it up* Midna: Hey Link, ready for your match today? Link: Match, what match? Midna: In the character battle! Link: What are you talking about? I’m banned from the character battles. It’s because I’m too liked or something. Midna: What? Didn’t you get an invite? Everyone is allowed back this time. It’s a 128 character contest, and each match will be a four-way with the top two advancing! Link: Whaaaa? And my match is today? Midna: YES YOU DUMB WOLF MAN! Link: Then I’m off! *Link dashes out of his house, and upon exiting, he finds three figures blocking his path* Agent J: WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU’RE GOING? Link: To my match! Who are you guys! Bidoof: Bidoof Bidoof Bii! Link: The heck did you say? Miles: He said we’re your Round 1 opponents! Link: How do you understand it? Miles: Because I’m so damn awesome, that’s why. Agent J: IF YOU WANT TO GET PAST US, YOU’LL HAVE TO BEAT US FIRST! Link: Dude, why do you talk in all caps and bold and italics? Agent J: I HAVE A CONDITION! I MEAN, SOMETIMES I DON’T WANT TO BUT, IT JUST KIND OF HAPPENS, YA KNOW? Link: It’s annoyin- WHAT? I said it’s annoyin- OH, WELL I CAN SEE WHY YOU THINK THAT Stop cutting me off! Don’t you see this is supposed to be me speaking? That’s why it says Link: OH REALLY? THAT’S WHAT THEY’RE FOR? I THOUGHT IT WAS DECORATION OR SOMETHING Miles: Let’s take him out already! Miles and Bidoof are the two characters grabbing for second. I’m going
with Miles, since hardcore fanbases seem to be thriving in this format.
The only thing I’m worried about is him not being as out there as
Phoenix is. Moltar’s Bracket Says: Link > Miles > Bidoof > Agent J Moltar’s Prediction is: Link: 71% - Miles: 13% - Bidoof: 11% - Agent J: 6% Ultimaterializer’s Analysis This is an odd match in that there's one overly dominant character against three bottom-of-the-barrel scrubs. I seriously won't be surprised if Link gets 75% of the vote here; he's that damn strong these days. Which leaves a crapshoot for whoever comes in second. No one has heard of Elite Beat Agents, Miles isn't really in on the Phoenix Wright fad and Bidoof was a pure joke nomination into the contest. But even though it *kills* me to go against my favorite character (my license plate says EDGEY, no joke), I don't think Miles can pull this out. Not because he isn't strong enough to, but because the popularity of Diamond/Pearl on GameFAQs is staggering. Even against SFF, I think Bidoof will have just barely enough in him to pull off second place. Ulti's Prediction: Link [77.00%] Bidoof [10.00%] Miles [8.00%] Agent J [5.00%] Heroic Mario’s Analysis Link -- 80% Miles Edgeworth -- 8% Bidoof -- 7% Agent J -- 5% Great match or greatest match? Usually, matches where one of the noble nine blowout fodder is neither exciting nor entertaining -- but this is different! I want to see just how much Link can dominate a poll with three other characters there, even if they are three of the weakest characters we’ll probably ever see. I still can’t believe he got the draw he did. You have Miles Edgeworth from Phoenix Wright, who is bound to be that much worse than Phoenix; you have Bidoof, the board 8 joke character of the contest and random Pokemon extraordinaire; and finally, you have Agent J, who is in some random DS game that Funk hypes (enough said). The big question here is which of the other three characters are going to suck the least. The general consensus would appear to support Bidoof -- but you have to take into consideration the place where the consensus comes from. I’m thinking the fanatical Phoenix Wright base will be able to scrounge up enough votes here to barely get Edgeworth by. It wouldn’t surprise me if Bidoof managed to pull it off, though. The Pokemon love around these parts is ... augh. Bracket: Link > Miles Edgeworth Vote: Link Yoblazer’s Analysis We have another very debated match, almost all of it centered on the second place battle between Bidoof and Miles Edgeworth. Bidoof's supporters point to Nidoran's surprisingly good performance against Samus last year and maintain that, as a joke Pokemon, the little beaver guy will do the same. Edgeworth's crew, conversely, claim that Bidoof is not nearly as popular as the older, more established Nidoran, will get very little love in the face of Link's might, and does not have a hardcore fanbase with the devotion of the PW clan. Personally, I side with Miles Edgeworth. Joke character or not, Bidoof is very new, and I get the feeling that he's not necessarily as liked outside of Board 8. Also, he's up against Link, and let's be honest, how many times does the contest god have to overperform before people get it: you don't cross the boss, and in the world of Nintendo, LINK IS THE BOSS. Miles will also feel the hurt, but he has fans who are much more likely to rally and are extremely faithful to him, and when fighting for the miniscule percentages these two will be fighting for, such a fanbase is indispensable. Well, in any case, I don't much think Agent J is going to have much strength here... he'll likely get a picture from some crappy gameboy Men In Black game that doesn't even look like Will Smith. Ah, then the second guy... Bidoof? What is that, a gopher? Er... beaver, yeah... teeth. Whatever, man. Probably from one of those fancy beaver sims that are sweeping the nation these days. Doesn't surprise me that Board 8 thinks it's the funniest thing ever. Must be the teeth. Damnable beavers. Anyway, Sim Beaver has no sway on this site, not even with the boost of Sim Beaver 2. In fact, I envision those that know of the game will be hacking GameFAQs to remove his votes. That's how hated it is. Most people don't think the game is funny like B8 does, either, never mind this guy. ... huh? Pokemon? Pikachu isn't for a few divisions, shut up, man. Last guy? Oh okay, I know this guy. Yeah... Miles Edgeworth. This guy is gonna have a devoted fanbase for sure. The people love their Phoenix Wright. Now, of course, he isn't the main character, and he is up against Link, so we must be reasonable here. 12%? Yeah whatever, that's my stab. Of course, it's still way more than the other guys are gonna get. I feel bad for J, though. Men in Black was awesome. Link sucks, but I must see him dominate this jobber fodder well. He gets my vote tomorrow, for the first time ever. I'm not the only one. The people want to see a 3v1 blowout more than ever. Make it happen, Link! WWSBDF comes to fruition tomorrow! We Wanna See a BeatDown Factor, for those keeping track at home. (Translation of that rant: Bidoof sucks, almost no one really knows who Agent J is, and Edgeworth's fanbase devotion secures him this easily. Especially with Phoenix's ridiculous performance yesterday. Link will romp on them, and he will romp well, especially considering he can potentially SFF all three of these DS characters.) Lopen's prediction: Link – 85.00% Miles Edgeworth – 12.87% Agent J – 3% Bidoof - -0.87% (hackers win! Eat it, Sim Beaver!) Karma Hunter’s Analysis Has today's match finally energized this lamentable Crew Member? At any rate, Link has this, and if you didn't know that you should stop
now and question why you're on this site in the first place. Agent J
should be no threat, EBA isn't popular and Agent J is... ... WHO THE HELL IS AGENT J Which leaves us with El Prosecutor and his less than formidable foe. At first glance, this seems easy pickings for Edgeworth - his hardcore vote stacked up against Link SFFing Bidoof shouldn't be a problem for him. Sure, he's DS, but... ...then you realize that Link is a black hole, and even the most 'hardcore' of characters get hurt by his presence on a comparable scale to the casuals. You realize that he's gonna be sucking up the vote so violently that the others are gonna be fighting over scraps, and those scraps kinda matter when a lot of the joke/default votes Bidoof gets are gonna hurt Edgey bad. It's a lot to contend against, and Edgeworth doesn't have a lot of casual appeal either. This is basically a truer, more real test of the PW fanbase. Take out the crazy B8 rush and the "rallies" and focus on the characters. How much do people really care, and how much is it a fad? For myself, I'm gonna nullify everything I just said and say I'm placing faith in... faith. Edgeworth is going 1-3 on Bidoof's ass, and don't you forget it. Karma Hunter's Vote: Miles. Edgey. Worthy. I usually don't support arguments about "character depth" or whatever,
but Miles Edgeworth just eats Bidoof alive. it's embarrassing that
Bidoof even made the contest, let alone that people actually find him
funny. I've never seen anything so devoid of humour in my life, and I
spend a significant portion of my day watching people complain about an
internet contest. SDR is funnier than Bidoof. Smurf's crappy alts are
better than Bidoof. LOL I'M A FURRY is better than Bidoof. okay, I
might have gone too far there. but it's close. there is nothing
appealing about Bidoof at all and anybody that thinks differently needs
to forget how to speak English. oh, and Bidoof wins. Bidoof sucks so much voting for it guarantees a quick trip to hell transience's prediction: Link - 70.44%, Bidoof - 11.95%, Miles Edgeworth - 11.84%, Agent J - 5.77% Guest’s Analysis - BigBob Link gets the biggest blowout of the contest, no surprise there. So which of the three fodderiffic characters come in second? Let's see. Agent J is from the super awesome DS game Elite Beat Agents...which sold like 10 copies. It's one of the best games I played this year, but it would take an act of god (AKA Sakurai) to get him in second. That leaves us with Bidoof and Edgeworth. Bidoof got in on support from Board 8 alone, but Edgeworth probably did as well. Bidoof is from the recently released Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, while Edgeworth is a character from Phoenix Wright. Both are DS games. Who do I give my support to? Miles ****ing Edgeworth. You see, outside of Board 8, nobody cares about Bidoof. If you honestly think joke voting will propel Bidoof, recall that Midgar Zolom got 5.51% against Cloud. Not a very impressive number. Though the fact that Phoenix Wright 3 only got 5.38% in that "What October game are you looking forward to most" poll doesn't make me feel as safe. However, the average person would be indifferent to Zolom. Bidoof...is hated. In-game, he's a worthless pokemon, and even competitively, you kind of you have to base a team around his evolution to get it to work right. Even joke voters have the zany Agent J and the badass lawyer to choose from instead. As for the rest of the pokemon fans, they'll probably be voting for Link. Regardless of the differences in genre, Pokemon and Zelda have always been for the same platforms, and typically geared towards the same audiences. Link will suck up votes like mad throughout the poll, including those from Pokemon fans. And Edgeworth...fortunately Edgeworth has plenty of factors going his way. The Phoenix Wright fanbase is quite rabid and definitely will vote its characters over anything. Edgeworth will have some sort of resistance to the 4-way SFF in this match, and at the very least, he has the Objection site to fall back on. In fact, take a look at these results from my "Rate the Fad" series on Board 8: Objection! - 8.18/10 (39 votes) Bidoof - 4.26/10 (37 votes) Wow, I can't believe I actually found a use for those results. Anyway, even the very people who nominated Bidoof prefer Objection over him, quite decisively, I might add. |

| The only real "edge" that Bidoof has against
Edgeworth (no pun intended) is that he's more recognizable thanks to
his presence in Pokemon, but that won't help him enough. Edgeworth's
dedicated fanbase, along with (what I consider) a likelier chance to
suck up underdog/joke votes, has 2nd place nice and snug. Too bad I
will fail to guess the percentages right because half the Analysis Crew
will be siding with him too. I suck at guessing, so I'll let Edgeworth

DpOblivion's Unofficial Quick Analysis: Prepare for the highest percentage by any one contestant in the first round. For Link, this seems like a 1st round match in a 1-on-1 competition. Seriously, Agent J, Bidoof, and Miles Edgeworth? That's not even a fun competition for 2nd! But speaking of 2nd, who of the fodder will it be? Agent J is complete cult fodder. Bidoof is nothing but a fad that most don't even like. Miles Edgeworth, however, as seen by Phoenix Wright's showing today, has a pretty decent sized, dedicated fanbase. He won't perform as well as Phoenix, what with PW being the name of the series as well as leader of the fad. But Miles Edgeworth should still do decently enough, enough to take 2nd at least. Vincent Game/Series Known From: Final Fantasy VII Seed in 2005: 5 Seed in 2006: 5 Lost in 2005 to Crono in the Elite 8 Lost in 2006 to Sonic in Round 2 One of the strongest guys here steps up to the plate. Zelda Game/Series Known From: Legend of Zelda Seed in 2003: 10 Seed in 2005: 5 Seed in 2006: 1 Lost in 2003 to Mega Man in Round 2 Lost in 2005 to Solid Snake in Round 2 Lost in 2006 to Samus in the Final 4 Doesn’t need to be rescued here. What a match this is. Nothing here that’s too tough. Vincent and Zelda are leagues above Tails and The Boss in strength. I’m thinking Tails should take 3rd, and The Boss in last place, but who knows with the way MGS has been performing thus far. The real question here is who takes first? Both Vincent and Zelda are pretty strong, and not too far from each other in strength. First you have Vincent, who’s beaten Squall and Ganondorf, and put up excellent numbers on Crono and Sonic. He’s obviously proven he’s strong in these Contests. This format is a bit different, but I wouldn’t worry about Vincent in it. I mean, 3rd in the favorite FF7 character poll is good enough for me. Then there is Zelda. She’s also done well in these Contests, even making it to the Final Four last year. With all the tough female competition around, she had to fight tooth and nail to get there. Zelda has the possibility of getting major Legend of Zelda backing, and she’s had Twilight Princess since last year. So who takes first? I’m going with Vincent. He’s more of a favorite character that Zelda, and I also believe he slightly edges her out in pure strength. Moltar’s Bracket Says: Vincent > Zelda > Tails > The Boss Moltar’s Prediction is: Vincent: 37% - Zelda: 32% - Tails: 16% - The Boss: 15% Ultimaterializer’s Analysis One of the few obvious matches we have in the first couple rounds of this bracket. Vincent and Zelda are locks to take the top two spots, as the other two characters are too far below them to make a game of things. From there it comes down to who takes first place, but given that Ganondorf has been stronger than Zelda across the board in these things, Vincent > Zelda seems an easy pick. Remember the Vincent v Ganon match last year. Ulti's Prediction: Vincent [38.00%] Zelda [35.00%] Tails [15.00%] The Boss [12.00%] Heroic Mario’s Analysis Vincent Valentine -- 40% Zelda -- 32% The Boss -- 15% Tails -- 13% After the Phoenix Wright/Bomberman craziness, two slows are much appreciated. This is one of the more obvious matches of the contest -- Vincent and Zelda unquestionably advance here. The only interesting bit is which one of them takes second, and which takes first. Some people are all high on that “Zeldafear,” but I’m not buying Zelda having nearly enough fans to propel her to first here. There’s only so far your namesake can carry you, especially against the fan favorite of Final Fantasy VII. |

Vincent’s got a lot going for him in this match. Not only does he have
a rockin’ picture, but he’s got both the casual appeal and the hardcore
fans necessary to put him cleanly out ahead. Since Dirge of Cerberus
(which wasn’t that bad, by the way !!),
Vincent’s broken out into the limelight to become a bit more than just
a cool looking optional character in FFVII -- although that never
hindered him anyway. I think of all the non-noble nine characters,
Vincent is definitely going to be the strongest in this format. He’s
got all of the keys here to devastate his competition, a certain spiky
headed mute included. Zelda certainly isn’t a slouch, though. For whatever reason that escapes me, Zelda actually has tons of voters backing her every contest. It’s hard to imagine they actually like Zelda for what she is -- a damsel-in-distress. I think her namesake, and perhaps some minor confusion about “Zelda” being the main character of Zelda games, is what gives her a good deal of her strength. Sure, there’s Sheik to possibly gain her some fans, but I’m just not seeing it. Who calls Zelda one of their favorite characters, especially over someone like Vincent? I remember hearing some talk earlier about the possibility of The Boss hurting Vincent a bit to let Zelda slip by, but I’m not buying that. The Boss and Tails are going to get votes from their hardcore fans, for sure, but it won’t be at the expense of Vincent, or even Zelda. But yeah, give me the fan favorite from Final Fantasy VII over the damsel-in-distress from Zelda. vincent 4 lief Bracket: Vincent > Zelda Vote: Vincent Yoblazer’s Analysis Today, we have a very compelling match that many people have been waiting for. While many of the matches so far maintained our interest due to second place battles between relatively weak characters, this one is special in that it features the two characters who many consider to be right behind the Noble 9 in strength. I am, of course, referring to Final Fantasy VII's Vincent Valentine and Zelda from the series which bares her name. These two power players are obviously moving on, and for once, it'll be a test of strength for first place rather than a test of who sucks less for second. Let me first say that I have Zelda in my bracket. I have Zelda in my bracket, and, if given an opportunity to change that, I would. The Hylian Princess has a shot, yes, but it was a pick more from my fanboyish heart than my sleep deprived brain. As much as it pains me to admit, the goth guy has a few key advantages that Zelda simply doesn't. Let's run through them. Zelda had a fantastic contest last year; there's no denying that. She destroyed the weaker competition, performed admirably against the Final Fantasy babes, and then outperformed Ganondorf by 4.5% against Samus, strengthening my argument that she is higher up on the Nintendo ladder than her nemesis. However, Vincent defeated Ganondorf outright with 52.5% of the vote. Zelda may SFF Ganon to a safe win in a direct match, but I'm not sure if she's that much stronger than him against non-company competition. Vincent's great win over someone with comparable strength makes him look very good. Also, apart from Zelda, Vincent is a huge fan favorite. Zelda is popular, liked by many, and has her name stamped on every cover, but Vincent has hoards of fanboys who won't budge come hell or high water. I'm not sure if Zelda has the same, but that insecurity alone doesn't make me feel too confident about my pick. Lastly, Vincent appears to have a picture advantage. I won't deny this (I might be feeling a bit better if we were graced with Twilight Princess or Brawl Zelda), but I'm unsure if it'll really make a noticeable difference. |

| All in all, while Zelda still has a reasonable
shot, I feel Vincent simply has too many weapons under that goofy
wardrobe of his, and they're made even more powerful in a format such
as this one. Whatever, go Zelda! Oh, and The Boss and Tails are in this
match as well. Believe it or not, The Boss may actually get my vote
(she and Zelda, along with Jill Valentine and Samus, are my favorite
gaming gals), but... there's nothing that really needs to be said about
them. The spotlight belongs to the Nintendo and Square reps today. Vincent Valentine - 37% Zelda - 35% Tails - 14% The Boss - 14% Lopen’s Analysis I'm not sure if there's much debate to this match, but honestly, I really don't think there should be. Some people might be flip-flopping Zelda, but Vincent has generally looked better (and speaking of looking better, look at that crappy Zelda pic ahahaha...haha!) than Zelda in these contests, and Vincent has cred as clearly the third most popular guy in FFVII. He's got fanbase devotion, no doubt. Zelda? Well, let's just say I have reason to doubt. Nintendo has always seemed more fickle when it comes to their characters. And man, how many people out there really say "Zelda is my favorite character," anybody? I'm just gonna say it right now... I expect many Nintendo characters are gonna collapse like it's Jenga and Master Chief just shot the tower. And Zelda is one of them I expect. Bowser did it to some degree, although he should probably be forgiven because of the meddling mushroom. Of course, when I say "collapse" I mean it in a relative sense. They're not gonna... oh I dunno, start trailing Phoenix Wright for 30 minutes, but to some degree, yes! So Zelda should fall clearly below Vincent in this one, but not far enough that she's in danger from The Boss or Tails. As for The Boss vs Tails? Tails has the advantage contest appearance wise. He also has the possibility that Vincent is gonna do something fishy with the Boss on his side. But, The Boss has a pretty rabid fanbase, it seems. Tails? I dunno. Somehow I don't think he'll hold up very well in this format. Like Zelda, it's rare that I'd need to pull out the expression "Tails fanboy/fangirl." So it's FF7/MGS fishiness vs my skepticality on Tails. Let's go with fishiness winning. Lopen's Prediction: Vincent Valentine - 36.88% Zelda - 27.12% Miles "Tails" Prower - 18.93% The Boss - 17.07% Karma Hunter’s Analysis You'd think today's performance would have curbed my enthusiasm, eh? (to be fair, it has *sigh*) But look toward the future, I say. Gotta keep up a steady dose of optimism and faith that the right characters will win (IT MATTERS SO MUCH :O) so the battles continue, with one of our more high profile matches: Zelda Perhaps the most godawfully impressive contestant last contest, Zelda made the once universally considered stronger Ganon look like chicken feed in comparison. She begins facing off against the character that upended the Gerudo King... Vincent Valentine Fresh off his DoC boost and 48% on Sonic, Vincent was the consensus "Strongest NNer of Last Year", which must have been a shock to the otherwise higher statted Zelda (take THAT, blondie). He faces a character who opposes Ganon for the title of second-strongest Zelda character... and who is fresh off a TP boost. The Boss One of the characters wasted in this pack, Big Boss and Ocelot already proved she could have thrived in a debatable match. Look for her not to do much here, seeing as how the one reason for her doing poorly last year (FF/MGS SFF) will be amplified here. Tails And returning after a few off seasons is Tails, who gets stuck in a no-winner here as well! While the Sonic Boost will probably aid him, he doesn't have a chance in hell here. |

| So what's the call on this? Well, up until 24
hours ago I would have told you Zelda. Despite Zeldafear burning me
once with Midna, despite her not being a "favorite" in the slightest,
Zelda is ZELDA, and I have faith in the name. ...or did I? Whether it be something subconscious or nebulous like that, Zelda's picture is... ick, there. And Vincent may have the most badass picture he's received yet in this contest (which means a lot for him). Zelda didn't look very hurt with an icky picture against Aeris, though, but for some reason, something's gnawing at my sensibility here... ...and I'm gonna listen to it. Zelda pisses me off anyway, and I picked her in my bracket. Might as well pull an Ocelot here and go with one of my all-time favorites. Karma Hunter's Vote: Vincent Valentine. FOR DIRGE BEST GAME EVER IMHO Karma Hunter's Krazy Prediction: Vincent Valentine with 35%, Zelda with 32%, The Boss with 18%, Tails with 15% The Boss probably gets hurt a bit, but the format favors her and swings her back over Tails. Vincent vs. Zelda would be one of great one-on-one contest matches -- there's five or six "near-elites" from Nintendo and Square, and these two are in that little class. Zelda went to town on the female bracket last year while Vincent beat down her supposedly stronger villain and put up a fantastic showing on Sonic. since last year, Twilight Princess has been released, so Zelda could be seeing a boost thanks to that. pre-contest, Zelda looked like the "safe" pick in my eyes. Vincent might have been a little bit stronger last year, but Twilight Princess would make up for that. plus, who dares go against Zelda -- not just the series, but the very namesake? unfortunately, everything since then has gone the other way. Midna flopped pretty badly while Cloud kicked ass and took names. Vincent got a "badass" picture while Zelda got her OOT kiddie picture. people love to hate on that thing, though Zelda got it in 2005 vs. Snake and she did all right. granted, Snake had an even worse picture, but still, it's OOT. I think she'll be all right, but Vincent wins out there. "fan-favourites" seem to be doing great this contest, and Vincent is all over that. but despite all that, I'm sticking with the princess. female bracket or not, she did beat the hell out of Aeris last year. Aeris sucked last year, but I can't see Vincent doing *that* much better. prove me wrong, Vincent. I also think The Boss will hamper Vincent more than Tails will hamper Zelda. I'm just not picking against Zelda -- call it "Zeldafear", it's a perfect term for my feelings, and I'm sticking with it until one of the big three flop. I expect Vincent to win, but I'll stick to my guns here. plus, I *always* pick against Vincent. it's contest tradition. and I'm always wrong. Zeldafear's still there Nintendo fans worry me but I hate Vincent transience's prediction: Zelda - 36.06%, Vincent - 35.58%, The Boss - 14.81%, Tails - 13.55% Guest’s Analysis - Mac Arrowny http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=2524 I figure that that poll is a good starting point for this analysis. Going by what we now know about Ganondorf in 2K3, Zelda and Ganondorf have likely always been very near to each other in the stats, and last year was no exception. So, in a straight match between Zelda and Vincent, in 2K6, Zelda most likely would have lost. But a number of things have changed since then to make it different this time. |

| First, we’re in an entirely different sort of
poll. Vincent, as the number three character in FFVII, will likely hold
up quite well here. Zelda’s excellent showings against Mega Man and
Samus show that she holds up very well in SFF matches, and suggest that
she might have more of a hardcore fanbase than other Nintendo
characters. The other two characters in this poll are The Boss and
Tails. One might expect The Boss’s fanbase to be more hardcore than the
rest, but her performance against Tifa suggests that it’s not. Here,
she might provide a source of LFF for Vincent, given the evidence of a
large overlap between MGS and FF (VII in particular) that we’ve seen in
the past. Tails might hurt Zelda, as we’ve seen some evidence of
Sonic/Nintendo overlap in Sonic/Luigi and Sonic 2/Super Mario World
(and Knuckles/Yoshi?), but those are all Sonic/Mario, and are far from
definitive. Tails himself won’t be taking much of the vote, given the
dismal performances of Knuckles and Shadow and the greater strength of
the other members of his fourpack. The other main factor in Zelda’s favor is that she’s had a very big game since last contest: Twilight Princess. It absolutely dominated in the Game of the Year poll against far from shabby competition, and is most likely the strongest game released in the last five years. Zelda played a relatively small role in it, but *TWILIGHT PRINCESS SPOILERS!!!* the role she did play was entirely awesome. Learning that you’d be fighting against boss Zelda was one of the best moments in the entire game, and the part where you were chasing Ganondorf with her on horseback was probably the best part of the final battle. *END SPOILERS*. Unfortunately, Midna’s poor performance despite her relatively large performance in the game suggests that Twilight Princess may not have done as much as we thought. Of course, there are explanations for that (Midna’s ugly as sin, Zelda fans don’t like characters with personalities, Scorpion’s stronger than before, Kratos LFF’d Midna (k, probably kinda reaching there), etc.), but it’s still not a positive. Nintendo’s been performing alright this contest, with only Peach/Bowser/Midna as true disappointments, but the first two were against other Nintendo characters who managed to impress themselves. Square has seen impressive performances from Axel, Rikku, and Auron, while Vaan, Kefka, Sephiroth, and Frog all disappointed, and Cloud performed right on target. The trend there looks like New Square doing well (except lol Vaan) and Old Square disappointing, but it’s hardly anything definitive so far. Link’s performance today looks to be as impressive as expected, especially if cheating for Bidoof (and Edgeworth?) is taken into account, which is a definite positive for Zelda. However, Zelda’s match picture is…possibly the worst she could get. Vincent looks great, The Boss looks like The Boss, and Tails has the cute factor going on. This is the same picture Zelda got against Snake (Acid Snake, even), though with her body included. Looking at the stats, it seems like she did about as well as expected there (when Snake’s increased strength that year is taken into account), so it shouldn’t be too much of a problem, but it doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. Overall, this would be close in a one on one between Zelda and Vincent…but I expect The Boss’s presence here to be enough to win it decisively for Zelda. Mac’s Prediction: Zelda: 37.8% Vincent: 36% The Boss: 14% Tails: 12.2% Crew Consensus: Majority says Vincent > Zelda, but the other way around is very likely as well. |

Damn, almost to 500....doing this now because I'm tired of being on the computer.... DpOblivion's Unofficial Quick Analysis: Ugh, I'm getting real sick of this contest. After a perfect first division, I've now failed to get full points on six of the last nine matches. And it looks like I'm pulling for the underdog once again. Tails and The Boss finish 3rd and 4th, not necessarily in that order. Too bad, too, they have strong fanbases, but they don't match up to their opponents, Legend of Zelda and Vincent Valentine. It seems like the majority think Vincent will be 1st over Zelda. I guess I can see it, he's the "cooler" character, and he's from the most popular game on the site. However, he's up against the namesake of the most popular series on the site (ha, got it right this time!). It will certainly be close. It's another classic Legend of Zelda vs. Final Fantasy battle. I see Zelda coming out on top though, as her popularity just keeps rising, with help from Twilight Princess and Super Smash Bros. Brawl previews since her last appearance.
